hi xda!
i am thinking of buying a N5 but the thing that bothers me the most is the BRUTAL changes that google has made to android kitkat.
things like merging sms to hangout and reading all the incoming calls numbers and even if some one is not in your phone list they may show you the caller's name from google database,so they actually track all the calls that you have and save all the sms that you sent or received.
i think that this is TERRIBLE and it really bothers me.
what do you think is there a way to fix this issue?
Who says that that info is ever associated to you?
nobody is forcing you to use those apps. install alternatives. you don't even have to use google play store.

This is called reverse look up. Carriers have been doing this for years and land line providers. It simply matches the number up with known directories of numbers. Its not new and its not related to privacy either

Hi,
Even by just surfing on the web and by posting on a forum and your privacy is (or could be) corrupted, then......
Its more like caller ID. That you have at home. Same thing. Its just applied to mobile now.

Good thing because if my mother knew my porn habits..................
Things could change if people decided not do business with these companies. As far as a constitution that affords you some rights of privacy, it only works if people are proactively fighting for it and not actively hiding under the blankets.
IIRC you are asked if google may use your number for this new "show callers name"-service. You can simply say "no" there. I really don't see any difference in privacy between the N5 and other smartphones. And as some ppl here already mentioned, full privacy is almost impossible in these days unless you are a hermit who lives in a cave or in the woods Did you know for example that the NSA can turn on your microphone or your camera anytime if they want? So pls smile when you look at your phone, somebody may be watching you
Anyone have any good links for privacy for phones and in general?

This app is simple but useful for people that heavily use full screen apps (games/browsers/ect). It gives a nice little notification that shows the text message/email you just received, allowing you to decide if it's worth quitting your app to reply to it (see picture), even if you're in another app! You can turn the notifications on and off via the main screen. The best part of it is you can play and the notification will not interfere with your touch on the game. It might also have the simplest options menu.
FEATURE LIST:
Works with third party SMS applications
Now supports K9 Mail (requires K9 Mail for functionality)
Shows the sender (name from contacts list or number if contact doesn't exist)
Shows the sender and contents of the message
Low profile
Doesn't interfere with the touch interface of whatever task you are doing
Easy to turn on or off just by the touch of a checkbox
Lightweight
No more quitting Angry Birds just to see that someone texted you "lol"
Works in portrait and landscape orientations
Permissions explained:
Read SMS: So that it can read the text to show you
Read contacts: so that it can see if anyone in your contacts shares the same number and the text sender
Please report any bugs to me.
P.S. I know this is a VERY simplistic app and may seem pointless. If you feel that way that is fine, however I have had a lot of people that laughed at it originally tell me they can't use any full screen app without and they never turn it off. So I simply ask you give constructive criticism. Thank you!

Crazy, I was literally just thinking it would be cool to have something exactly like this on my SGS2 when I was playing Star Diamonds Capture... it's an online multiplayer game that you can't really back out of unless you want to risk losing the match, but I always want to make sure I'm not ignoring an important text.
Thanks, I will let you know how it runs and if you stay active as a dev I will support your efforts as much as possible.

Really interested to see if this takes off. We really need a good encrypted messaging service. I read they are also working on an iOS application, which would increase their reach tremendously.
Also, anyone care to look at the source code? I'd like to know if it is as good as they claim it is.

This is a great example of a well designed P2P truly secure mobile app. I've been using it on my Andorid 4.2 AOKP roms for the last 2 weeks with a few friends and I like it a lot more than Skype or similar apps secure or not.
It does what says on the tin, its easy to use, provides status updates as messages come through and it doesn't eat the battery. The only thing I'm missing is VOIP but this wasn't design for voice.
10/10 from me.

Best Messaging APP ever. Used it since two weeks and I love it, OpenSource + Encrypted + No Screenshots + TotalControl of Information
This is useful for me.
You need a page to send in good ideas for the app, and here is one!
This app is great. But i miss one thing. An auto-log-out function thal logs you out of all current conversations (just like manually pressing log-out button inside the app does) but with a place in the settings, where one could either type in a number between 1 and 60 (minutes) or select from a dropdown type menu. Preferrably a way to select any number between 1 and 60 minutes.
This would make the app EVEN more secure than what it already is...
Hello guys.
I am running stock 4.4.2 KOT49H
I start google voice search and say
"Call Mum"
It then requests
"Whom do you want to call?"
"Pick contact"
No matter how many times I then choose my mother as the contact to call, it never remembers, and asks me every time.
I have no idea why, anyone?
The same happens when I try "Call Wife" etc...

Mark.
Are they saved in your contacts under those names? I guess your mum might be but 'wife' ?

set you contact as "mom" or "wife". it wont know who it is unless you you set your contacts as such.
If its asking who to call but not asking who is mom, then its likely the service isn't fully working for you (I have the same issue)

Hi
Thanks for the responses... AFAIK, the new feature that came out today is meant to remember any voice name you use, and you assign it to a contact...
The reason why I use wife is that google NEVER gets my wife's name right when I say it. I could change her name to wife and my mother's to mom, but that defeats the purpose of this new feature, so it should work that when I say call xyz, it asks who I mean, then I choose a contact, and next time I say call xyz it calls that contact.
Isnt that what the new feature does? Y2whisper, I thought it was "switched on" on google's servers, and was not something that would be gradually released, like an update to the software?
Tx
Mark.
Fully get what you mean.
When the feature works, you will say call my wife and you will be asked "who is your wife" you pick a contact and it should save.
When it's not working it will simply say "pick a contact" in other words it has no idea what you said so it's asking you to choose.
I'm not sure how it's being implemented. I think it's US only but there are others claiming they have it working. Even here in Canada.
I am set to US English still a no go

Hey there,
Yeah, almost... when I say "call mom" it types "call mom" in the search field, so it does know what I said, but still asks me to pick a contact/Whom do you want to call... and does that again and again.
Odd.
Yup that's what it does for me which shows me the feature isn't working.

That's the problem, you pick a contact and try it again and it still asks Who's Mom!
Once you pick a contact it should save that information and then be able to dial it again easily.
Yeah for those that have that problem, I would assume Google has some kinks to work out.

Today I also have been banned for 24 hours because I'm using WhatsApp Plus.
Now, I have installed WhatsApp from the Play Store and I guess I just have to wait 24 hours before I can use it again.
See screenshot attached.
I backed up my WA+ data and escaped the ban I guess, running the original version
But to be honest.... it's a weird feeling seeing the original whatsapp.. I don't know.. but the design and the functionalities of the original app aren't contemporary anymore in my eyes

Yeah, you're right. I've used WhatsApp Plus with material design theme and it looked so awesome. The original one is just ugly :silly:
Edit: I honestly think they should have pushed a little message or a warning like "Your account will be banned in X hours because you may have violated our terms of service. Please install the original WhatsApp from the play store" or something like that.
Edit 2: I've wrote an email to WhatsApp regarding a possible unlock before the end of the 24 hours.
Surprisingly I just got an answer which is just a basic information about payment and stuff. Not a single word about the ban.

I wrote them a nice long angry email, I find the ban to be ridiculous. They should have at least released a notification or something before handing out the ban. They're just pushing their user database.
Got me too lol.. Oh well I rarely use it anyway and im sure alot of people will be upset about this.. The makers of whatsapp+ don't even charge for their work and ya still need a valid account with WhatsApp to even use it.. Either the official app starts allowing users to freedom of customization that + does or I'm taking my 99 cents elsewhere!!! Lol
I wonder what happens if you keep using whatsapp plus, perma ban or what? They will probably bypass it anyway again but will they give a harder punishment then 1 day? I am not sure but I think that whatsapp plus developers would think of a solution. But if whatsapp can see it again they might give a heavier punishment. There's nothing wrong with the original whatsapp but I just like the theming ability and to remove some retarded limits which just screws the whole audio files and images. The app is not actually made for checking if you have a cool vanity number ("1-888-PIZZA"), but that's one way of using it
I created the app as a help for finding meaningful names to a given number, making it easier to memorize numbers.
I'll never forget the security code to my car stereo anymore. It's "cake" - (2253)
If you'd like to check it out, or perhaps see if you or your friends have a fun phone number, you can check it out at play store - NameMyNumber.
Hope you give it a try, and hopefully have some fun :fingers-crossed:
Please also remember that you can select different languages for your results. (Settings button)
Here is a 2 minute youtube video of what the app is supposed to do

Here it a couple of screenshots from the app.

LOL
Very cool! Thanks you
I didn't get any fun words out of my phone number. But my best friend has a great one .
I probably shouldn't post the result here... I'm not sure my friend would like me to distribute his phone number
feature requests
would be way cooler if you could search directly from contacts
btw my contacts never returned a word more than four letters long

Thanks for the tip
I actually thought about searching through the contact list. It's just that I'm affraid people would be very sceptic if the app needed access to contact info...
What are your thoughts on that? Would you be OK with it?

Well, thats why you can select a given word, and then again get a new search result. Limiting the new search result based on your previous selection. A sort of "drill down" into the results.
That way you may be able to get 2 or 3 words out of your number.
Numbers containing 0 and 1 in the middle part of the number, tends to provide less good result. Since there are no characters for 0 and 1 on the dial pad.
Did you try to combining one word with others?

From my point of view, it depends on what the app does.
- If I expect an app to make lookups in the contacts. then I'd have no problem with it.
If I don't see why an app would need it, then I agree with you.
Perhaps I'll add a "share via" function that enables the user to send a contact to NameMyNumber.
Any thoughts?

Sure, why not. Although it would be easier for the user to pick from a list within the app...
By the way, I showed the app to my younger brother. The app became quite the laugh amongst his friends at school. They where competing on having the best number
Thanks for the feedback, that's very kind of you
If anyone has some more feedback on the app, I'd love to here it.
If not, I suppose I'll leave it as it is, this strange little app...
And then move on to the next project.

No worries , I should perhaps had an "Tip" splash screen of some sort, informing the user that the results can be selected. I'm sure that if you didn't get it the first time, there are lots of others in the same situation.

Still on the idea stage for the moment...
