[Q] Question about SafeStrap and Custom ROMs - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So, I just got an insurance replacement device and it has 4.3 on it. I looked around before just trying to root because I figured Vzw would have done something to break root. I just didn't realize how bad they'd get. Anyway, I know i need to use saferoot and then install safestrap and then maybe I can get CleanROM8 on this thing.
However I have a question. How does the kernel work with safestrap? When I install Scotts ROM will it get a new Kernel? Can I install lk? I've searched quite a bit and haven't found a clear answer.

U can only install 4.3 TW VRUCML1 based ROMS. I just installed wicked sensations and it is smooth as hell and has the native Sprint hotspot hack. If I'm not mistaken cleanRom is wrapped in Aroma installer. You can't use any custom kernels. CleanRom comes with the recompiled stock kernel by scrosler. Be sure to flash the ML1 modem Module AFTER u install the Rom. Safestrap won't let u install over your stock slot. But I would advise you to make a nandroid before you flash anything.

Awesome, Thanks for the Info. I took a look at wicked sensations and it looks like I'd just install it to an empty ROM slot in SafeStrap and then I'm good to go? CleanROM says he's had luck with safestrap as well so I wonder if i can try it.
Can I hardbrick so long as I use an empty slot in safestrap. (and stay FAR away from the stock slot)?

It will ask you how big u want to make your data and cache partitions of your Rom-slot, the bigger you make it, the less space u have on internal storage. Once u create it, you activate it. Then go in and install ROM (flash zip from sdcard). After you do that immediately flash the ML1 MODEM MODULE IN YOUR ROM-SLOT, this will ensure that your Wi-Fi and data will work. After you do all of that, Reboot. DON'T PANIC IF THE FIRST BOOT TAKES A WHILE AND SYSTEM UI MAY CRASH ON FIRST BOOT. DON'T WORRY, JUST HIT OK AND WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN. TAKE THE TIME TO REINSTALL ALL YOUR APPS FROM PLAY STORE. APPLYING BACKUPS CAN HAVE ADVERSE EFFECTS. PATIENCE IS KEY WITH SAFESTRAP.
DO NOT FLASH ANYTHING OVER YOUR STOCK SLOT! HARD BRICK IS IMMINENT IF U DO SO! SO YEAH, AS LONG AS YOU STAY FAR AWAY FROM THAT STOCK SLOT YOU'RE GOOD! Wicked Sensations is running very good for me. Plus, I like the hotspot hack. Any questions, I can pm me.

Thanks for all your help ATGkompressor but I no longer need safestrap. The phone I got that had ML1 on it had the screen die so I had to call for a second replacement and thankfully it had an older unlockable boot loader. I have full unlock and root now.

SG3 OTA Update

This question may have been asked, when verizon pushes out the Jelly Bean update what will I need to do in order to accept it? I am rooted with google wallet and google now.... Every bit of information I got from here...Everyone here ROCKS......
If you're on the stock recovery and rom I believe you can just install it, you'll just have to re-root after the update.
That said, I would NOT install any OTA update until developers have fully analyzed it, and honestly even after that. For all you know it will lock the bootloader again or cause issues with the current root method. The developers will integrate it into the different roms if necessary. I would suggest unlocking your bootloader and just waiting for a custom rom that you like, even if it's a stock JB one after the update has been out.

Yeah, if the bootloader is already unlocked or you have a custom rom then you'd want to get back to stock. I read "rooted" as only rooted and nothing else really done rom wise, only app.
One other thing I forgot to mention, if you're not running a custom rom, I'd block OTA updates so they don't keep popping up. Almost all custom roms already take care of this for you, but the below should let you do it manually (this is from another site, I can't post a link yet).
"Delete fota.client.apk and fwupgrade with ES File Explorer in system/apps using ES File Explorer, enable “Root Explorer” and “Mount File System” in settings"

I take this as your running stock TW an just rooted but you're running Google now an wallet with no custom rom? I what methods did you use? Those are specifically the two reasons I want a custom rom. I'm fine with just stock rooted but wants those two apps.

The problem is that you may just lose root WITH the update.
As well, you could lose the unlocking ability that was recently found and exploited.
Never accept any OTA updates if you want to stay rooted and unlocked.

yea. only way i would accept is to flash back stock rom in ODIN. easy and fast (well takes about 7 min, but you dont gotta do nuffin but wait). and stock kernel and modem if you changed. but you said just rooted with google walelt and google now.
make sure you wipe data/cache in stock recovery or them two and dalvik in custom recovery. ( i allways waipe before and after rom but that probably over kill.
Hey ty so just run Odin, and it is all good

For those wondering, I've never seen a major version OTA that did not remove root.
So you can bet you'll lose root with the update.
That said I personally would never accept a single OTA for fear of losing my unlocked bootloader.

Everyone here has been a great help.. This is my first Android phone and rocks my iPhone in everyway...I was a little nervous when I rooted it and started installing custom mods ie...Google wallet, Google Now. I have been thinking about a ROM but I think I'll wait for JB with TW. I'm sure the Dev's will give the ok for the flash once they know we can keep the unlock and root. Thanks again.
Time to keep reading and learning

[Q] Whats the best way to...

Ok so Ive decided to head back to stock. While all this is flashing and what not is fun and maybe invigorating to some, its gotten me worried that my phone is going to explode in my hand or something. I just dont want to cause any problems with my new shiny phone. Can you tell my noob-ness level? lol So Im running CR 2.5 and LiquidSmooth before that. While there is nothing wrong with CR im just too nervous every time I see something unusual.
I have a nandroid BU of Stock with root and unlocked BL and CWM flashed. If I format system, Format data, Format cache and restore that nandroid. Im back to stock ROM and everything with root, correct?
If I choose to unroot, do I have to use ODIN, or is there another way? I pretty much want to go back to getting OTAs but dont want to loose all my Apps. Can I stay rooted, then lock the bootloader and accept OTAs?
Now I also have BUs in TB and MYBackup. If I choose to unroot how do I get my backups restored if Im not rooted?
What are my best options? Suggestions, links are greatly appreciated?
Anybody?

Yes me! So first of all there are the OTA's in the development section I believe. And you can just flash the OTA to your rooted device description is in the forum. Second If you would want to get back to stock non rooted the best way would be to ODIN also don't forget to reset the flash counter if you needed to return the device to verizon or anything.
Also you can find the latest stock rooted in the development section with all OTA's included. I wouldn't un-root if I were you just because of all the good stuff that is possible with root.
And I just want to tell you that your pretty safe your phone won't explode or anything like that. just make sure you follow the instruction correctly and your phone shouldn't over-heat or drain the battery so on. And even if something drain's the battery check the section where you downloaded the ROM from and you will find the solution easy as 1-2-3.
Use the little search button upper corner on the right hand side if you have any questions in the verizon GS3 section of course and you will find everything you need.
If I have a little time later today, I will link you the OTA's and the latest stock-rooted ROM if you can't find it.

[Q] Cannot get Verizon update to work

Over the past month or so I have tried several times to update my S3 with the Jelly Bean update from Verizon. Each time I try it I get a message that the software failed to install.
O I need to unroot the phone and lock the bootloader in order to update? Anyone else had this problem? Right now I am on Android version 4.0.4 and I think the update is 4.1.2.
I believe for the official update you have to be unrooted and have a locked bootloader unless you do it from kies where it can revert it complete to stock and unroot it.

You are 100% correct. Update will fail due to custom recovery. OP, why not download one of the many JB ROMS from the development section and flash it? Not only will it update your phone, it will be much better than stock as well as easier to install.

I have not yet ventured into flashing other ROMS but am certainly willing to give it a try. I know there are many available but can you suggest one or two that i can try.
Really tough to suggest a ROM, there are a lot of different options depending on what you are looking for. Clean ROM is pretty much stock that has been optimized, I would probably start there since you have only done stock. You can then make a nandroid and flash other ROMS and see which one you like the best.
Just remember, read all of the stickies so that you have everything backed up in case something goes wrong. It takes less time to read and learn it before you have a problem and then don't have what you need to fix it nor the know-how.
Okay, so I download a ROM zip file. I copy it to me microSD card. I have TWRP on my phone. I assume I just go into recovery mode, wipe the cache and Dalvik cache and then just install the zip via TWRP. Is that all I need to do?
Never mind. I just flashed the Jelly_Beans10 ROM and it works fine.

(Q) Safestrap & ROM installation

How do I go about installing Wicked Sensations through safestrap?
I have not yet installed safestrap as I am somewhat gun-shy on doing so. I want to make sure I do all of this in correct order and procedure.
And also, once I install the Rom, will I able to go back to stock since i am just booting through ROM-slots? And will I have to choose what slot to boot on the spashscreen every time I boot?

Everything is linked in the op of the safestrap thread. But you have the right idea.
You have a stock system that remains untouched, you're able to partition 2-4 slots and put roms on each slot. The more roms you have, the less space you have leftover on your SD card for everything else.
When you boot up, you'll have a special screen asking you to boot on the selected rom slot, or boot into recovery to pick another one. Booting into recovery mode the normal way will no longer work.
You should still read everything on the op page. He also links to another website that gives detailed information on exactly how it works and how to operate it.

[GUIDE] Straight Talk Galaxy S4 (S975L) running AT&T towers Guide and Info

If you are using the Straight Talk Galaxy S4 with build number
JSS15J.S975LUDUANB1 and just want root and simple recovery
You can root using towelroot.
SuperSU will also deactivate Knox.
Safestrap version 3.72 works for getting a proper recovery installed with the option at boot for system or recovery. Note that it will say safestrap is disabled but will still allow your choice to boot into recovery.
Make a backup in recovery as soon as you can.
Or if you want awesomeness!! Do THIS!!
Here is the definitive guide for those wondering what to do that will work and be stable and AWESOME!
From the beginning:
1.Root with towelroot (search) AND install SuperSU from the play store.
2.Install the latest recovery from here using the DD method listed directions from the TWRP site. This is from T-Mobile and works! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2263001
MAKE A BACKUP!!! DO IT! No more messing around with Safestrap and the bitter warnings!
To get into recovery hold "home+volume up" during boot. Whoooo!!!!
3. Install the Lollipop gpe ROM from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2539361
This uses the aroma installer and works well.
You may, or may not have to input *#6463*# into dialpad to change settings to LTE etc.. This adjustment may alsobe in the ROM settings!
4. Optional - install the googy kernel
I like this kernel better though there isn't a huge difference from the hulk kernel. Make sure to install the GE edition 1.3.0. NOT TOUCHWHIZ! : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2741181
ENJOY!

The zip to allow tethering WILL NOT work, and you will be stuck on the Samsung logo.
Xposed works well, but do not use the option in gravity box to add the recovery option to your power menu or your device will freeze upon pressing the power button.
Greenify works well.
Advise against ROM installation, as well as initial upgrade. You will lose app to SD ability if you upgrade.
The boot loader is not unlocked, so no cool kernels here

True.. I don't know as much about it as I like. I just wasn't able to use fastboot or "unlock" using fastboot.
If you are working with the modems let me know how that goes, and maybe you can help with an issue I'm having? My GPS won't work after trying a ROM with safestrap. What I've posted here is a result of trying to fix it. I consistently show NO satellites. I consulted the local phone fixers to no avail. I was wondering if it could be related to a modem issue? I think the ROM I first tried did something deep to my phone, though Phone Info showed at the time everything to be original concerning baseband etc.. And a factory reset didn't help.
I'm at the point now of thinking its hardware rather than software but the coincidence to trying the ROM was too high.
Hey everyone!
I am working with this phone and am trying to get a backup modem, can you please ,make a suggestion?
Also are there any ROMs that allow easy access to umts menu through servicemenu? I know the base firmware cripples this and I'm trying to get a work around!
thanks in advanced!
