(Q) Safestrap & ROM installation - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

How do I go about installing Wicked Sensations through safestrap?
I have not yet installed safestrap as I am somewhat gun-shy on doing so. I want to make sure I do all of this in correct order and procedure.
And also, once I install the Rom, will I able to go back to stock since i am just booting through ROM-slots? And will I have to choose what slot to boot on the spashscreen every time I boot?

Everything is linked in the op of the safestrap thread. But you have the right idea.
You have a stock system that remains untouched, you're able to partition 2-4 slots and put roms on each slot. The more roms you have, the less space you have leftover on your SD card for everything else.
When you boot up, you'll have a special screen asking you to boot on the selected rom slot, or boot into recovery to pick another one. Booting into recovery mode the normal way will no longer work.
You should still read everything on the op page. He also links to another website that gives detailed information on exactly how it works and how to operate it.

Yes, it's only going to show up on the slot you flash it in.

So long as i don't flash anything......ANYTHING...over my stock slot right? I can flash like paparazzi on the Rom slots! This really is a work of art. Hashcode is right on time with this...plus, I'm liking the TWRP interface. I came from a HTC Thunderbolt with 4EXT, boy am I missing that....

It assigns slot 3&4, but you have to create the storage size.

update phone first before custom ROM

ok, so i've read what i think i need to root and install a custom ROM (i think i want to try eagles blood 2.8 first http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124522)
just got my G2x on Monday and it has GB 2.3.3 but i have not checked if it has an update and not sure i want to update it first, but that is my question.
should i do an update first before i do anything else or does it even matter? i mean i will root, then do a backup, then install the ROM, right? so it shouldnt matter if the phone is the latest and greatest from LG or T-Mobile as i will be overwriting it anyway...at least that is how i think it works
also i have seen where people are saying to wipe everything (or at least a few folders), how is that done? just delete what is in the folders or is there a tool to wipe said data?
No OTA updates are available, but is unnecessary anyway. Also, no need to root if you want to flash these roms as they already have root access. Flash clockworkmod (search for the thread on that) then flash the rom you want. All the instructions are there.

thanks, i didnt even want to try the update, but since you said there isnt one, i tried and sure enough, i have the latest already
OTA=over the air? i've seen that one a few times, some new acronyms here i need to learn
this is what i was going to do first

No need to root before nvflashing cwm.
Yes, OTA is "over the air". And just so you know, make sure you follow those nvflash steps EXACTLY as written. What you are choosing to flash, however, is the completely stock (although rooted) version of android 2.3.3 that you already have on your phone. This is fine, but after you get cwm you can flash any custom rom you find within the development section as well. I recommend at least choosing cm7 because the stock rom sucks.

This one. It's actually linked as the first step in your thread. This is the important one. Read it over a couple times first, and maybe watch some videos too.
Everything after that step in your thread is basically how to flash a custom rom. They are just choosing a rooted version of stock as their example.

root first if you want to backup any of the apps on the phone.
i rooted , clockworked , backed up the phone then copied the int and ext sd roms to my pc. installed titanium and backed up all the apps in the stock rom i thought i might want to keep. ( mostly the nova demo and need for speed) . copy your rom contents over so if you mistakenly format your sd card you can still return the phone to stock. ( don't ask i did it ) tryed cm7 stable. liked it but had sleep of death issues. returned the phone to stock . messed with the stock apps and root explorer backed everything up again. and now im ruing weapon r and love it. no stutter and smooth as a hot knife going thru butter and no sleep of death! and USB works every time. even love the loader he used.
ok followed the steps here

i put eagles blood 2.8 on it and it seems to be doing ok.
couple of things, dont know if this is a theme issue, but it no longer says 4G, it has a letter H instead
also i moved the notification bar to the bottom but cant remember where to change that back to the top
that looks good. don't for get to copy off the internal and external sd chips and keep that data safe. when you made your backup in clockwork it stored it on the internal chip. titanium by default i be leave uses the external. if any thing goes wrong, as long as you have access to those backups and can boot to clockwork you can get your phone working.

so like i posted before it shows an H instead of 4G so i'm assuming that stands for HSPA?
Yeah that's it. How are you liking the rom? Bear in mind that now you have root access you can do all sorts of customizations. You can flash kernels that allow for overclocking or underclocking, use titanium backup (recommended) to preserve all apps and app data, modify boot animations and status bar icons, basically anything you want. Enjoy!

[Q] the R version

Hi!
This is my first post. Hope I'm following the rules....
OK..I'm Canadian and have a phone from Rogers, It is the SGH-i727R. I suppose the R is for Rogers. I'm sick of waiting for an ICS upgrade so I wanna try A DIY Rom install. Can I use all the software/firmware from the non-R version for my Rogers-R version phone?
Thanks all

since this is your first post, welcome! xda is a great place, and the skyrocket sub forum is full of a fun loving knowledgeable bunch.
In the future, try to search around first to see if you can find a solution. If not, post your question and what you HAVE found out, as senior members will be more inclined to help u.
Only difference between our phones and the at&t version, is as u said, the "r". Once u have cwm installed, u are more than welcome to flash any rom in the development section. As previously stated however, the one click Odin leaks for design gears have some kind of firmware check, and won't work on our devices.
Also, when someone helps u, press their thanks button! :-D
Thanxs guys.
I'll spend some more time reading posts BUT It's quite confusing. For example...I find a post on flashing a rom and two pages in it's talking about ODIN when I've now learned that system isn't compatible for my phone. There must be dozens of posts, all different, about rooting my phone. I don't even know if I need to root before installing a custom rom!! But then it makes for some interesting reading.

It doesn't need rooted to flash roms. It just requires CWM, the custom recovery. Then you can flash a custom rom, since they are already rooted for you

Odin works fine for Rogers phones. Things such as flashing back stock tars and recoveries work fine. What doesn't work is the ONECLICK odin's from the ICS leak designed for the regular i727. This is because it checks the model # and because we have an (r) at the end it wont work. There are plenty of great roms to flash. Just use odin to flash CWM and then install any rom you want.

Well I got the sgh-I727r rooted. Installed Rom Manager, just to get CWM installed. 2 questions..If I back up the original ROM then do a "wipe" will I loose the B/U file. I don't have an removable SD card. I might be mistaken but in CWM restore, I didn't find an option to restore from internal SD only External? Did I miss something?

It will not wipe internal sd(emmc). It will only do that if you format emmc.
Just don't wipe the internal SD card and you should be fine
i'm new at this too and i have the R version but so far I haven't noticed any problems. except ODIN restoring to AT&T stock... which I doubt why you would do that lol

Hold volume up, down and power. Release power when Samsung logo appears but stay holding volume buttons until cwm pops up

Caught in a loop - Guidance Please.

Good morning -
I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I'm an existing user of the Galaxy Nexus and have been rooting / flashing it without any issue, but a little stumped on what went wrong with the captivate.
I picked up a brand new Captivate for my wife from Craigslist the other night for $60. I really nice phone...very nice screen.
I was successful in rooting it last night all though I did have to copy a recovery file into the system/bin. I believe that was because of a signature issue I was having and found some information on this site regarding the file.
Anyway, everything seem to have rooted fine and I copied CM9 to the proper location. Booted into ClockWorkMod and flashed the ROM.
However, it now boots to the AT&T screen, goes black, and then back to the AT&T screen. I can between ATT screens a script or something running.
I then used ODIN to get back to stock and appears it went through without any issues. However, it still gets in the same loop at the AT&T screen. I am still able to get into download mode. Perhaps I used the wrong ODIN.
Would someone have an idea of the next step? Do I need to get into some type of boot screen to do another master reset / format?
Thanks.
The first time when you were seeing the AT&T screen, a script screen, then rebooting, what was happening was that the phone needed to have the CM9 zip flashed again. The first time you flashed it, it essentially built the framework onto which the second flash would actually put CM9 in place.
As for where you are right now, you may want to flash back to a Gingerbread-based stock rom with bootloaders included (unless you're 100% certain it already has the Gingerbread bootloaders). There's a sticky in the development section that has all the stock roms.
Once you've flashed back to stock Gingerbread, try flashing the CM9 zip again. If it does the boot loop again, just hold Vol+/Vol-/Power until it reboots, and it should put you in ClockworkMod Recovery. At that point, just flash the CM9 zip again and you should be good to go.
One word of warning, as you're new to the Captivate. ICS-based roms, on some occasions, have a bug that can cripple the internal SD card of the Captivate. I'd suggest you look for the "Encryption Unsuccessful" thread in the Development section and read up a little bit so you are aware what that is.
Thank you for the assistance.
Is this where I should start for the ODIN?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18370912&postcount=3.
In particular, 'I897UCKK4 Odin One Click - Stock, CONTAINS Bootloaders, Re-partition, Full Wipe'
Thanks.
That looks correct to me. I'm assuming you'll need the bootloaders package, as you had mentioned you were dealing with the 3e signature error (which, if I recall correctly, is associated with stock Froyo roms).
Okay. Maybe next time I should just stick with a non-ICS ROM. Just need to find one in the development section.
Thanks a bunch! A great little phone and the screen is just outstanding.
Okay....back up and running using "In particular, 'I897UCKK4 Odin One Click - Stock, CONTAINS Bootloaders, Re-partition, Full Wipe" from the above link.
However, now I can't get the one click root to work.
There's an easier way. Go to the Corn Kernel, grab a CWM-based zip file and flash it from within CWM recovery. That will give you the Corn Kernel, which will (I believe) give you root access.
Double check, though, that you can get to CWM recovery by using the V+/V-/Power key combo. It should have about 9 options (instead of the 4 in standard recovery).
If you don't have CWM recovery from the flash you just did, you'll just need to grab another one-click that has CWM baked in. There's one that says "Without Bootloaders - Link to thread - by 4-2ndtwin [With CWM Injected Kernel from Boog]". That flashes KH3, no bootloaders, but with the CWM-friendly kernel.
Or...from the Stock KK4 just use this new Utility by Red_81 to get CWM Kernel and Root... [Utility] KK4 Easy Root

Pretty easy. First put the 4.1.2 Odin tar on your internal or external sd card as well as the stock kernel which is also a tar file. You can get these from Samsung's site or from the stickies here on xda. Remember the ones on Samsung site will wipe internal. But you can grab no wipe version here on xda
Now just go grab the app. When you open it it will ask you to download an add on. Say yes. Now it will tell you that you must have an unlocked bootloader. Say Ok since we know you have one. Put rom in system and kernel in kernel slot. If you wanna keep root and you are not flashing a rooted stock rom turn on ever root. Flash away!

[Q] Question about SafeStrap and Custom ROMs

So, I just got an insurance replacement device and it has 4.3 on it. I looked around before just trying to root because I figured Vzw would have done something to break root. I just didn't realize how bad they'd get. Anyway, I know i need to use saferoot and then install safestrap and then maybe I can get CleanROM8 on this thing.
However I have a question. How does the kernel work with safestrap? When I install Scotts ROM will it get a new Kernel? Can I install lk? I've searched quite a bit and haven't found a clear answer.

U can only install 4.3 TW VRUCML1 based ROMS. I just installed wicked sensations and it is smooth as hell and has the native Sprint hotspot hack. If I'm not mistaken cleanRom is wrapped in Aroma installer. You can't use any custom kernels. CleanRom comes with the recompiled stock kernel by scrosler. Be sure to flash the ML1 modem Module AFTER u install the Rom. Safestrap won't let u install over your stock slot. But I would advise you to make a nandroid before you flash anything.

U can only install 4.3 TW VRUCML1 based ROMS. I just installed wicked sensations and it is smooth as hell and has the native Sprint hotspot hack. Awesome, Thanks for the Info. I took a look at wicked sensations and it looks like I'd just install it to an empty ROM slot in SafeStrap and then I'm good to go? CleanROM says he's had luck with safestrap as well so I wonder if i can try it.
Can I hardbrick so long as I use an empty slot in safestrap. (and stay FAR away from the stock slot)?

It will ask you how big u want to make your data and cache partitions of your Rom-slot, the bigger you make it, the less space u have on internal storage. Once u create it, you activate it. Then go in and install ROM (flash zip from sdcard). After you do that immediately flash the ML1 MODEM MODULE IN YOUR ROM-SLOT, this will ensure that your Wi-Fi and data will work. After you do all of that, Reboot. DON'T PANIC IF THE FIRST BOOT TAKES A WHILE AND SYSTEM UI MAY CRASH ON FIRST BOOT. DON'T WORRY, JUST HIT OK AND WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN. TAKE THE TIME TO REINSTALL ALL YOUR APPS FROM PLAY STORE. APPLYING BACKUPS CAN HAVE ADVERSE EFFECTS. PATIENCE IS KEY WITH SAFESTRAP.
DO NOT FLASH ANYTHING OVER YOUR STOCK SLOT! HARD BRICK IS IMMINENT IF U DO SO! SO YEAH, AS LONG AS YOU STAY FAR AWAY FROM THAT STOCK SLOT YOU'RE GOOD! Wicked Sensations is running very good for me. Plus, I like the hotspot hack. Any questions, I can pm me.

Thanks for all your help ATGkompressor but I no longer need safestrap. The phone I got that had ML1 on it had the screen die so I had to call for a second replacement and thankfully it had an older unlockable boot loader. I have full unlock and root now.

U got lucky. I'm just gonna get a cracked screen s3 and take the board out and put it in my phone. It has 4.1 on it so I can be free.
