Caught in a loop - Guidance Please. - Captivate General

Good morning -
I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I'm an existing user of the Galaxy Nexus and have been rooting / flashing it without any issue, but a little stumped on what went wrong with the captivate.
I picked up a brand new Captivate for my wife from Craigslist the other night for $60. I really nice phone...very nice screen.
I was successful in rooting it last night all though I did have to copy a recovery file into the system/bin. I believe that was because of a signature issue I was having and found some information on this site regarding the file.
Anyway, everything seem to have rooted fine and I copied CM9 to the proper location. Booted into ClockWorkMod and flashed the ROM.
However, it now boots to the AT&T screen, goes black, and then back to the AT&T screen. I can between ATT screens a script or something running.
I then used ODIN to get back to stock and appears it went through without any issues. However, it still gets in the same loop at the AT&T screen. I am still able to get into download mode. Perhaps I used the wrong ODIN.
Would someone have an idea of the next step? Do I need to get into some type of boot screen to do another master reset / format?
Thanks.

The first time when you were seeing the AT&T screen, a script screen, then rebooting, what was happening was that the phone needed to have the CM9 zip flashed again. The first time you flashed it, it essentially built the framework onto which the second flash would actually put CM9 in place.
As for where you are right now, you may want to flash back to a Gingerbread-based stock rom with bootloaders included (unless you're 100% certain it already has the Gingerbread bootloaders). There's a sticky in the development section that has all the stock roms.
Once you've flashed back to stock Gingerbread, try flashing the CM9 zip again. If it does the boot loop again, just hold Vol+/Vol-/Power until it reboots, and it should put you in ClockworkMod Recovery. At that point, just flash the CM9 zip again and you should be good to go.
One word of warning, as you're new to the Captivate. ICS-based roms, on some occasions, have a bug that can cripple the internal SD card of the Captivate. I'd suggest you look for the "Encryption Unsuccessful" thread in the Development section and read up a little bit so you are aware what that is.

Thank you for the assistance.
Is this where I should start for the ODIN?

In particular, 'I897UCKK4 Odin One Click - Stock, CONTAINS Bootloaders, Re-partition, Full Wipe'
Thanks.

That looks correct to me. I'm assuming you'll need the bootloaders package, as you had mentioned you were dealing with the 3e signature error (which, if I recall correctly, is associated with stock Froyo roms).

Okay. Maybe next time I should just stick with a non-ICS ROM. Just need to find one in the development section.
Thanks a bunch! A great little phone and the screen is just outstanding.

Okay....back up and running using "In particular, 'I897UCKK4 Odin One Click - Stock, CONTAINS Bootloaders, Re-partition, Full Wipe" from the above link.
However, now I can't get the one click root to work.

There's an easier way. Go to the Corn Kernel, grab a CWM-based zip file and flash it from within CWM recovery. That will give you the Corn Kernel, which will (I believe) give you root access.
Double check, though, that you can get to CWM recovery by using the V+/V-/Power key combo. It should have about 9 options (instead of the 4 in standard recovery).
If you don't have CWM recovery from the flash you just did, you'll just need to grab another one-click that has CWM baked in. There's one that says "Without Bootloaders - Link to thread - by 4-2ndtwin [With CWM Injected Kernel from Boog]". That flashes KH3, no bootloaders, but with the CWM-friendly kernel.

Or...from the Stock KK4 just use this new Utility by Red_81 to get CWM Kernel and Root... [Utility] KK4 Easy Root

Another thing about cm7 or cm9 is you have to remove the external sdcard (storage) before you flash.

I've heard this before, but I don't think I've heard the reason for why it's recommended to remove the external SD card.
I only ask because I've flashed those with my external SD card in place and the flashes went ok.

I have tried a couple times last night with AOSP or AOKP and get into the same situation as you. However, I'm a rookie at the Captivate. I was able to flash a GB Custom ROM without issue.
More weekend research. I really want to try one of those other ROMS.

Is there a ODIN file for the Rogers captivate froyo 2.2? Is it possible to flash roms without the ODIN file?
Do I just flash the JF6 Stock [email protected] Kernel anyways? I'm kind of stuck right now, this is my first attempt to flash and I've already hit a roadblock can anyone help please.
Read this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905042
I downloaded that file, but couldn't figure out what to do afterwards. I watched the mobile tech videos and it seemed that he was able to just click on the file and open the odin, while when I try to open it says "can't find application to open" after I extract it. Also I don't understand why I have to flash back to stock when I'm already at stock.

First download odin from this thread,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
Open it first and then point it to your rom image that you would like to use, you don't extract the file you have, it's ready to use as downloaded.
Please watch the videos again because you don't understand it yet and you're well on your way to a solid brick.
BTW using CWM with a .zip is easier then Odin IMHO, and can be done completely from your phone, no computer needed, it will also let you know if you have the three button recovery ( very important if something goes wrong ).
Read, read and read some more. Flashing a rom is not hard but it does have to be done correctly. If you want an almost guaranteed result you'll do the homework and learn something. I've only been here a while and rarely do I see a question that hasn't been answered 50 times already, your answers are here, go look for them and you'll pick up other things you will need to know when you decide to be a bit more adventurous with setting your phone up JUST like you want it.
Thanks for the information, it looks like I got lots of work to do.. The link you sent me has a broken Odin link on the other side, do you have a mirror or some sort so I can get the file? Also my final question is that since I have a Rogers Captivate I need to JL1 file not a J16 right? I've looked everywhere but couldn't find an answer to this... Thank you.

do you want to install a custom rom?? like phoenix or cog? if you are already rooted, just install clockwork mod and flash it to phone... then reboot into recovery and choose install zip from sd card... then select 'choose zip from sdcard'. then find the zip of the rom you want to install. I'm a rogers user and I've flashed all the latest roms (currently using andromeda 2.0). Never needed odin.
oh I see thanks, I've tried flashing Cognition via ROM manager with no success. I had Cognition on my SD card, installed and flashed the Clockwork mod and then selected "install ROM from SD card". From their it makes me select my ROM and then after I do it takes me to recovery mode. From here I select Reinstall packages and it says something like "Can't verify file" in red writing and aborts installation. I've always thought that maybe since I skip the whole "flashing ODIN" step that's why it's not working but obviously that's not the case. Do you know why it's not working for me? Thanks for the help.
are you running rogers 2.2 update? it has 3e recovery and will not allow zips to be flashed.
if that's the case, you will need odin3 from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821625
then put a new kernel in the PDA section. I used the tar file listed in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870760
then with your phone powered off, sim card and memory cards out (put back cover on so the battery doesn't fall out) hold 2 volume buttons and plug in usb... should go to download mode. then hit start.
boot up will take a bit while voodoo formats ext4 on your files. after that, you can go into recovery mode and flash zips from sd card

Your thread wasn't deleted. It's was pushed down by other questions thereby moving those thread up and yours down.
For example, if you went to my how to thread a few pages back and posted a question for help or clarification, that will move that thread up to the top, until another new thread pops up. Because of sup many new thread created on the same topic, most regular users annoyed by new thread on the same topic.
Since your already rooted, if you ready through my thread that mtease gave as an answer, there are links to YouTube vids that will guide you.
You should also see a write up where to start if you were on froyo.
Follow the link to gtg's original post. He spelled out very specific instructions on how to flash his ROM by several methods. If you don't want his ROM, use another.
Spend some time looking over the instructions I started...it will start to make sense.
edit: by the way, here was your original post..a page back. It wasn't deleted. Just got pushed further back by other new threads. All you had to do was go to it, and add another question and it would have been bumped up...instead of starting another thread. see?

If the infuse superthread didn't help then maybe Modding your phone isn't for you...stock sounds like what you need
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
Infuse Android forum needs an intro
All the information is in pages linked from the Superthread, but the Superthread itself only compiles a rather vast collection of resources with no clear sequence except that which is implicit, and actually links to poor explanations sometimes.
One example, with no offense aimed to those who made the effort, is that it has exactly one YouTube link that explains how to install modded recovery, and it's the only one I've found on YouTube---out of several that are on there---that fails to mention changing the permissions of the recovery file, which is totally crucial. (It has to be set to the same set of permissions of the one it replaces.)
The order in which these things have to be done simply is not laid out clearly for newcomers. I would do it, but I'm hardly knowledgeable enough about the phone at this point to do so. My instructions would be dangerous, perhaps, but I do have a set I made for an email to a fellow Infuse user... will post later. They're a dangerous mess, now
You do not need to change the permissions of the recovery file. Wherever you heard that, they were sadly mistaken. You just copy it to system/bin. After renaming the original to something like, recovery.bak, or old, or whatever. Use rom manager to flash to cwm, choose i9000. Boot into cwm, choose reinstall packages, twice. Simple, 5 min, done. You are making this sound hard, when its simple.

If you go to the Infuse Super Thread and read the Heimdall one click link, it's a good start. It will get you to a full working Gingerbread install, which gets you the gingerbread bootloader that many of the gingerbread roms need. From there you can install a kernel (I suggest Entropy's daily driver) which is also linked on the super thread. Then you can install CWM from Rom Manager, and then it's just following the instructions listed on your rom of choice. I used Heimdall to get to stock Gingerbread, which I was quite happy with for a few weeks. I have now worked up to cm7 using the very same steps. First time installing a rom. Yes I bricked my phone about 4 times, but each time I just reinstalled Gingerbread using Heimdall and started over.

I could not get into the modded 3e recovery without changing the permissions.
The steps I did:
1) Restored to stock using GTG's Unbrick.
2) Wiped data and cache in 3e recovery.
3) Flashed stock UCKH1 with Odin.
4) Rooted.
5) Copied the modded recovery file into the /system/bin folder after renaming the original to recovery.bak.
6) Shutdown.
7) Attempt to get into 3e Recovery. It sat there at the Samsung boot screen.
It still boots normally after pulling the battery. I tried this several times and it simply will not go into the modded 3e Recovery until I changed the file's permissions.
You did it wrong.... read how to root again....
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
Come to think of it... I didn't install ROM Manager... I already had the update.zip file for CWM on my internal SD storage. Does ROM Manager automatically change the recovery file's permissions?
BTW: I know how to root my phone and I already have the modded 3e recovery and I can get into CWM. I was trying to do all this without changing the recovery file permissions.
Here's the video created by gtg465x stating permissions need to be changed 1:40 into the video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkMo8rBehHg
Look apparently you don't know how tobrrot your phone because you have this thread... yes you need rom manager... flash to cwm with rommanager after you replace recovery, boot into recovery, reinstall packages, twice, done. Or flash the community kernel via Odin and you'll have cwm that way...

LOL.... This wasn't even my thread.. I assure you I'm rooted and I am using CWM as I'm able to use Titanium Backup and other root required apps as well as make nandroid backups using CWM.
You asked where the whole notion of changing the recovery file permissions came from and I provided it.
To the OP: If you get stuck at the white Samsung bootup screen after copying the recovery file into system/bin try changing permissions on the modded recovery file as shown in the video posted above.
*** The OP hasn't even been back since his/her original post... probably got scared away.

update phone first before custom ROM

ok, so i've read what i think i need to root and install a custom ROM (i think i want to try eagles blood 2.8 first http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124522)
just got my G2x on Monday and it has GB 2.3.3 but i have not checked if it has an update and not sure i want to update it first, but that is my question.
should i do an update first before i do anything else or does it even matter? i mean i will root, then do a backup, then install the ROM, right? so it shouldnt matter if the phone is the latest and greatest from LG or T-Mobile as i will be overwriting it anyway...at least that is how i think it works
also i have seen where people are saying to wipe everything (or at least a few folders), how is that done? just delete what is in the folders or is there a tool to wipe said data?
No OTA updates are available, but is unnecessary anyway. Also, no need to root if you want to flash these roms as they already have root access. Flash clockworkmod (search for the thread on that) then flash the rom you want. All the instructions are there.

No need to root before nvflashing cwm.
Yes, OTA is "over the air". And just so you know, make sure you follow those nvflash steps EXACTLY as written. What you are choosing to flash, however, is the completely stock (although rooted) version of android 2.3.3 that you already have on your phone. This is fine, but after you get cwm you can flash any custom rom you find within the development section as well. I recommend at least choosing cm7 because the stock rom sucks.

root first if you want to backup any of the apps on the phone.
i rooted , clockworked , backed up the phone then copied the int and ext sd roms to my pc. installed titanium and backed up all the apps in the stock rom i thought i might want to keep. ( mostly the nova demo and need for speed) . copy your rom contents over so if you mistakenly format your sd card you can still return the phone to stock. ( don't ask i did it ) tryed cm7 stable. liked it but had sleep of death issues. returned the phone to stock . messed with the stock apps and root explorer backed everything up again. and now im ruing weapon r and love it. no stutter and smooth as a hot knife going thru butter and no sleep of death! and USB works every time. even love the loader he used.

that looks good. don't for get to copy off the internal and external sd chips and keep that data safe. when you made your backup in clockwork it stored it on the internal chip. titanium by default i be leave uses the external. if any thing goes wrong, as long as you have access to those backups and can boot to clockwork you can get your phone working.

Yeah that's it. How are you liking the rom? Bear in mind that now you have root access you can do all sorts of customizations. Which brings me to my first query, I know its possible to upgrade my android version to the GB and JB with multiple methods but I'm extremely scared that I'm going to brick my phone. It was some forums on here that helped me decide to root my phone so now I'm hoping that you guys can help me take the next step. So whats the safest, easiest way to upgrade my os.. Odin didnt work and I no longer have a computer, so heimdall is out as well. Oh not sure if this is important but I'm not registered on any network nor have I unlocked my phone's sim. Ok so I have a rooted infuse 4G and am a complete noob when it comes to flashin roms and mods... I am still on the froyo 2.2.1and hate it lol. Well that's a start. I really hate froyo 2.2.1 so please if anyone can help I definitely could use it.

From Froyo 2.2.1, there is an official build GB 2.3.6 UCLB3 out for the Infuse.
You will need a computer though. Without a computer to restore your phone to stock from soft bricking, you should not be flashing anything. It may be possible for you to bring your phone to an AT&T store and have them update you if you don't have a PC. You will need a computer to root the GB UCLB3.
Where to start? Read the Q/A as much as you can. Then move into the Development section.

Thanks qkster.. I really appreciate your help. I follow alot of your threads and am so hapoy thst there are infuse users that actually are willing to take the device to the next lvl. Now for another question.
Will it be easier to flash the jellybean 4.1.1 from the froyo or the gb? Or would it be possible to just flash a higher kernel? I'm not syre if that would help me or not, I really want to speed up my infuse and stop it from rebooting so much.

You cannot flash JB from Froyo and need to go to Gingerbread, then ICS then JB.

Would it be best to use kies to update to GB? I'm a little concerned as to what would happen to my Infuse all around.. What will need backed up?
I have titanium backup but if the app gets wiped wont i lose all my back-ups? For some reason it wont sync to my dropbox app force closes every time I try. Sorry about all the questions I'm just short on the amount of time I am able to browse threads at the moment but I do have use of a computer for awhile so that kinda helps.
I personally prefer using odin or heimdall. Don't quite trust kies and it often gives issues.
all mayor changes will occur on system partitions. Your internal sd will remain untouched, and there you will titanium backups. Just reinstall TB app later and restore apps, not data.

Well I'm going to install and give it a try with Heimdall. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks everyone for all your help. I'm sure I'll have more questions before long. XD

Will this even work if i'm not registered to a network with the phone still locked? And I see that it will also unroot my phone which isnt a problem I'm just curious whether or not I can still root with super one click or if i need a different root tool?

It doesn't matter if your phone is unregistered and locked. You cannot use SuperOneClick on Gingerbread. What you should do is (this is the Heimdall version):
Flash this rooted version of stock GB:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25526643&postcount=2
You do that and you already have root.
If you want to then graduate on to Jelly Bean you must:
Flash ICS (follow directions carefully!):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24901014&postcount=1
Once you've done that, flash any of the JB ROMs you like, but make sure to read the directions carefully. I strongly recommend that you consult the Super Everything Thread for links to the ROMs and tweaks you need, particularly if you are interested in unlocking your phone.

I'm feeling kinda stupid..
Can somebody give me the right link for downloading Heimdall One-click w/root? For some reason I'm not able to get any to work on this computer.. I downloaded the ink provided labeled UCLB3 -DEBLOATED-ODEX - ROOTED - BUSYBOX- STOCK KERNEL on
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25526643&postcount=2
but am unsure if that actually is the one containing Heimdall or just the rom i'm flashing or both.. I'm extremely sorry about my noobishness of just posting all these already answered questions. I've gone and confused myself and have like ten tabs with different threads open please don't hate me. I have a bad habit of asking questions..
Oh and what apps do i need on my phone in order to flash? And I mean absolutely need. I've also noticed that most threads say to format my mounted sd card But i really dont want to do that if i dont need to.
It should all be bundled together. Heimdall is a java based interface so it should just open up. Sorry, it's been a long time and I'm an Odin person!
You don't need any apps on your phone. When you flash, everything on the small partition will be wiped (apps, app data, etc). Flashing will not usually wipe your pictures, videos etc. but it's always a good idea to back up. For now, don't worry about formatting anything. When you get to ICS, you'll need to format as it says in the instructions. Otherwise, if it works, don't fix it!
When you flash ICS and JB, all you need to do is to put the zip files on to your internal SD card (not the one you can take out). You can then flash from CWM (which will already be on your phone - don't download Rom Manager).
Once again thank you all. I'm running GB and loving it. My fiance is shocked at how much help I needed though usually I'm the person everyone comes to with their tech issues LOL. But I absolutely did not want to mess my infuse up. I thought I did but the issue was such a noob mistake that I had to smack myself in the face at my stupidity. Forgot to unzip the cwm ect folder I downloaded. XD not sure I'm ready to try ICS or JB yet though.

The odd thing is you could have updated to GB through AT&T and used mini kies. But at least you are now rooted and able to go to ICS and JB.
Read the instructions on the next step before moving on.

Kinda wish I would have done it that way... I wanted to get some practice flashing roms tho. And now my phone is bootlooping, computer says the device is incompatible I can only get into the samsung recovery even tho the rom i flashed had cwm packaged in. I tried to change my boot animation following the steps provided in my boot animation thread then again with the steps in tsqers rom thread I apologise if thats mispelled. I tried updating from sd but get a sign error Can get into download mode but same issue with it being incompatible usb device. I tried holding down the power button for 1 minute and then rebooting no luck there. I tried wiping data/fact. reset,... nothing. I tried wipe cache partition,...still looping.
The loop samsung screen two seconds, black screen 1 1/2 seconds,... over and over and over...
My battery is full. Any advice???

Which ROM did you flash and which CWM recovery can you see (which version)?
I used the http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...43&postcount=2 thread to get the rooted rom UCLB3 -DEBLOATED-ODEX - ROOTED - BUSYBOX- STOCK KERNEL.
Saved I think.
So I finally Got it to connect to my comp and re-flashed the rom can i get a link to an ICS heimdall one click package to flash before restoring anything and this happening again?
You should be able to find it on the ISET page.

[Q] Stuck on CWM Recovery Everytime

Hello everyone,
It's my first time witnessing this issue, I do have a Samsung Galaxy S 4G. So I decided to upgraded Eclairs to Gingerbread. Which I did.
Somehow I downloaded the CM7 ROM in the SGS 4G section, I have flashed it and now everytime I click "reboot system now", it's just putting me back to CWM Recovery over and over again. Now I got tired of it, so I tried flashing the SlimBean in hopes of making my device work the way they should, but it's the same result. When I cleared data, flashed the ROM and Gapps and when I click "reboot system now", It shows the boot screen but then it transferred me back to recovery. I don't really know what to do.
Urgent help needed. Thank you all.
can you acess into download mode?

Yes I can, also tried it with CM9, same results it shows recovery everytime. I need some help. :crying:
You say you went from Eclair (Did this phone even come with that? I thought it started with Froyo. Huh. At least, mine did.) to Gingerbread. Is the Gingerbread you started with CM7, or did you start with one that actually has normal GB bootloaders first? Because if you haven't yet, as with any major bootlooping issue, you'll want to use a proper GB one-click. If you failed to double-flash one of those to get the GB bootloaders earlier, do that ASAP. And hope hard that they come.
You are missing the boot loader if you went straight to Gingerbread. Use Heimdall One Click to flash to Gingerbread. Also click on the bootloader option as well when you flash.

Can you give me the names of the GB one-click?
Search for lumin30. He has an awesome guide and links to what you are looking for. It's in his signature.
I'll add, back up your .efs folder. Put copy on your computer.
