Hi guys. I just realized my shiny new Galaxy S3 I pre-ordered and received a few days ago from Verizon has a dead pixel (or maybe a few in a cluster, it's hard to tell if it's more than one). Since it's within 14 days of receiving the phone, I should be able to return it for a new handset, correct?
Now that I've seen it, it will surely bother me.

I don't like being nitpicky, but I paid good money for a brand new device, and it's technically defective.
I'm just worried they will say "oh, I can't see it" because it is quite difficult to see, but I have good eyes and it sticks out to me.
What would you guys do?

Alright. I believe tomorrow is the date they're supposed to get actual phones in-store, so I figure I can do it then.
Since it's a pre-order, do you think just my order confirmation sheet and original packaging and such would be enough for them?
I've always had bad luck with getting replacements, even when they're clearly hardware defects that are no fault of my own.

I need a phone with good battery life (well good as in i can make it through the day), i would like to know if the One X does well. If i root, debloat, and disable LTE radio will i make it solid through a day? My current phone (pantech Burst) i have to charge a few times to get through a day and its annoying. That is will all the above steps done. I'm not sure how hard it will be to root and run a custom rom on this phone but even if i use the standard but root debloat and turn LTE off will i be good? Thanks!
I have never seen this phone last less than a day.

Sounds like a challenge ...
I don't have LTE in my area, so I don't know how that would affect me. I last easily a day with the One X. I used to charge my GS II at lunch from ~50% back to 100%, and still have concerns I wouldnt last all evening. With the same usage I can last all day and end with more battery at bed time. Judging by the screen on time I easily get twice the battery life on the One X. And that is without doing anything special, using my phone quite a bit using data to stream Pandora a few hours, listening to audio books on the commute, all over Bluetooth. I am running Venom FWIW.

My only recommendation is that you pray that your new phone comes with 1.85 on it and not 2.20 as there is no root for the latter as of now. Either way it is ONE hell of a phone, just so much better with root and unlocked bootloader.
Def hope for that! Is it hard to unlock the bootloader?

First week of August. Each update plugged the hole used to root the previous build, so each update was like a chess match for the community. The bounty for a 2.20 root is now over $500.

I think he was referring to the GS III being a better phone (to be honest I agree, but got the One X for free after several DOA replacement GS IIs). As far as putting a new ROM on a Samsung phone "its so easy a cave man could do it." Its crazy simple and easy compared to the One X. I was able to load a custom ROM on a GS II before even booting it once, several times as I got replacements. There is no S-OFF, or bootloader to worry about. There are many threads about the GS III vs One X. They are both good and each have their own pros and cons.

I am seeing at least twice the battery life on the One X compared to the GS II. I never really worried about battery life because I could charge at work (and did for a few hours every day) and in the car. I can go all day with the One X. Right now I am almost dead at 5 hours of screen time. I never saw over 2 hours on the GS II. But, I never tried to maximize battery life, I used Bluetooth and Pandora whenever I want, I browse a lot, because I am always near a charger (and I use the One X the same way). I liked AOKP on the GS II, but the AOKP here isn't close to as polished as Task had it. I am fine with ViperXL, as a sense based ROM with lots of customization options not there on stock. I flashed 3 ROMs the day I got the phone, and stayed on ViperXL. That was 2 weeks ago, I feel no need to flash anything else.

See my comment (the last post in the thread). It took me several tries and a lot of patience. Once rooted you can unlock bootloader, install TWRP and get to flashing ROMs.

How long the battery last is obviously highly dependent on how you use your phone (in particular, screen on time, downloading, streaming, gaming, video, etc.). But I can get over 48 hours on a single charge on my One X, with LTE on during the work day, and on WiFi at home.
As already mentioned, whether you can root or not depends on what firmware you get shipped on the phone. Some people are still getting new ones with the 1.85 firmware, which is rootable (and you can unlock the bootloader after root). But many are getting 2.20, which is not currently rootable, and no bootloader unlock). Your chances of getting a phone with 1.85 are better if you buy from a store (versus online), I believe.

Any idea when we'll be getting the 4.4.2 update? I'm sick of exchange not working and USB otg function being broken. If these problems were fixed this phone would be more bearable not having root.

Thanks, was hoping maybe someone has heard something. The moto x and g both have 4.4.2 so our droid lineup is left awaiting the update
Sent from my XT1080 using XDA Premium
For the last two OTAs, the Droids didn't see a soak test until 5 to 6 weeks after the first X received the OTA, and definitely after all of the US carriers had the OTA. Verizon and AT&T Moto X phones still don't have the OTA, and it's only been a couple of weeks since the unlocked X got 4.4.2, so I'd just relax until the second week of March or so, if history repeats itself.
The G never had 4.4 - it went from 4.3 to 4.4.2, probably because Moto started working on the update after 4.4.2 was released. But, really, the X and the G are Moto's flagship phones. I think the Droids will always lag those two for updates.

What are the significant differences from 4.2.2 >4.4 >4.4.2?
I just went to 4.4 and haven't seen anything too noticeable. I think a few of my games play better. But some apps like eBay are acting a little wonky.

There have been changelogs posted. I think that we can look at the Moto X changelog for 4.4.2 to see what the Droids might get from 4.4.2. Not much - mostly bug fixes (battery life problems, exchange mail sync problems I think.)
4.4 changes were mostly internal stuff. BT 4.0 and BT LE devices are now supported. Emulated secure element for NFC, so Google Wallet tap to pay now works. Full screen mode. Camera touch to focus update. There are now printing options. The rest of the stuff in the changelog about the Gallery app is updated, since the gallery app has been updated a couple of times since then. There are also updates to Touchless Controls and Active Display. And a bug with the home key, that has the phone respond as if you pressed the home key twice.
4.4 changelog: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/97696
4.4.2: http://support.verizonwireless.com/dam/support/pdf/system_update/moto-x.pdf
(Strangely, the update changelog on VZW's site has been pulled and is now showing the update for the first OTA, 12.7.7, that came with the phone last August.)
DO NOT ACCEPT OTA UPDATES!

I wish I could be done with VZW. Wish wish wish.. I just need the the coverage. I'm so tired of them. The only time I have to deal with them is when I have exchange a defected device.. Which happens every time I buy one but it's enough. I pay $90 a month for unlimited data/txt and 450 minutes. So I'm happy about that. Oh yeah, I deal with them when I want control of my device. They don't want me (or anyone) to have it.

The only update I've ever dealt with was last year with my S4 when it upgraded from the MDK baseband. I don't remember the original one, but I remember I lucked out big time and when I ruined my phone and got a new one when I turned it on it basically almost immediately did an OTA to which I put in airplane mode to stop. Now I'm not 100% sure but I don't remember having to click yes or OK for that OTA

But if people have already accepted OTA before now, they are OK, right? Because this exploit is very new so I doubt it would've been fixed before that. The first fix I see for linux was on June 4th and I have no idea how that translates to phone OTAs

Most likely you are correct. The OTA they have been pushing is older so it's likely that the exploit will still work. I wouldn't accept any at all however if you can avoid it. I'd imagine they'll push the patch for this soon.

Understand the frustration cause there are no updates at all. That's just the nature of rooting I guess.
When the 4s was being jailbroken at least we would get periodic updates via Twitter.
Have no doubt the s5 will be rooted though. The devs here are extremely talented. And rooting gets done way quicker than jailbrakes so it's relatively a short time if you look at it that way.
My 2 cents.
Paid 2 bounties for the HTC one and I will pay this one too.

I too, bit the bullet, and bought an M8. Which, except for the camera, I'm loving. Still keeping an eye out here, in hopes that the S5 finally gets cracked, but for now I can feed my flashing addiction, and cured my jones for a new phone.

I agree I think it is just a matter of time and patience for someone to figure it out. I can't switch to the m8 BC of the camera, the s5 camera is the best camera I have used on any device.

Same here, I'm totally happy with my S5. Yes root would be nice but I really dislike the M8. To me it's too long and clunky looking. Plus the camera isn't too good.

I'm back LOL. I traded in the Note 3 last week for another S5 and I'm here to stay this time. Root will come sooner or later. The good side of not having root is the phone must be pretty secure. No one has to worry about Kingo or Vroot stealing info or spying. I agree, the camera is great on this phone. I was having a tough time taking good pictures of my black dog with the N3 but they come out nice with the S5.

Yeah, I couldn't resist. My son picked up a S3 for Virgin Mobile the other day so I can still do some ROM making for him to keep me in the groove. No love loss for the N3 and the overstuffed pocket at all.

I agree, don't miss the size one damn bit! S3 is def a great device for flashing and ROM building.

The S5 is pretty cool even without root. Yes root would be nice but actually I'm enjoying the break from backing up then flashing and finally restoring.... lol..guess I'm in rehab right now.

If you guys wanna enjoy the S5 even more while we wait for root, i HIGHLY recommend to try a Gear 2 or gear 2 Neo. Guys believe me when i say that it GREATLY enhances the S5 experience. It is such an awesome companion device and in my opinion its totally worth the $200 bucks.
