[SM-N900W8] List of Knox Friendly Flashing - Galaxy Note 3 General

So as it turns out, the Canadian variant SMN900W8 has receieved a kitkat version/mod that allows us to keep knox at 0x0 and give us a custom recovery, as well as root, through means that would normally trip Knox. I just wanted to compile a list of things that are working and doesn't trip Knox.
So far we know the following won't:
Edit 06/03/14
-Root (Through CF-ROOT)
- Custom Recovery
- Xnote 8.0
-XNote Kernel works without tripping Knox (selected in the AROMA installer) however I'm not sure if the changes are too mild to even trip knox.
- Kernels over all work; sounds and theme mods work as well. All that's left are AOSP roms.
Unconfirmed
- AOSP Roms
I'll update OP as users start reporting in.

Does anyone have video proof of a 4.3 to 4.4 upgrade and then CF-Rooting while retaining 0x0? I really don't want to mess this up.

I must admit: I am happy with KitKat so far. Everything works fine. The only glitch was timezone related. I manually selected it and its been fine since. Knox was tripped earlier by myself using root de La Vega.

I am on 4.3 mj4 firmware. I would like to root to make a nandroid and titanium backup so I can retire my apps and data when going to kit Kat.
It's there a way to root mj4 and keep Knox asset 0x0?

I think we can use KingoRoot actually.

Done kingo titanium backup.
Then upgrade as described. Now on 4.4.2. With no knox trip and rooted with twrp.
Restored with titanium which mostly worked well

Using files listed in at least 2 other threads I first used kingo to root though this is not necessary but I wanted a data backup since the kitkat flash will wipe out the data. Then after root did my backup with titanium.
Then used Odin 3.09 to flash the files rebooted. Then used Odin to root with cf auto root. Rebooted then flashed twrp via ODIN.

BTW, If I am on Mexican 4.4.2 (Telcel one), can I use CF-Root to root without tripping KNOX? Or do I have to flash the files located here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2618633) with my own CSC?

CONFIRMED!
Flashing CF Root on a stock N900W8 4.4.2 Telcel Note 3 will NOT trip KNOX and everything works wonders.

Has anyone tried if X Note 9 is Knox Friendly?

Hello @xclub_101 ---excuse me--is this exercise ONLY suitable for N900W8--or can users of International SM N900 use CF-Root and hope to not trip KNOX indicator???

I got twrp, xnote14 and a compulsion kernal installed on my phone and Knox in NOT tripped.

I think we could..
If I understand correctly. They flash a rooted system in odin and then push the custom recovery with adb. If we can flash a rooted system(which i imagine we can) why couldn't we then do the same with the recovery. Looks possible to me. If im right i wish i'd known that before i tripped the counter :/
Care to try?

[Q] Rooted and can't install OTA update

Hi.
I rooted my Note 8010 using Zedomax' method. All has been fine. My note has now downaloded the JB OTA update, but it fails to install.
I assume I need to restore 'stock' recovery to install the OTA update? But where can I get this from.
Also will installing the OTA remove root? And will Zedomax' method still work to re-root after applying the update.
Regards
Installing the OTA should not remove root but if it does just use the exynos abuse patch app to root that is the simplest and safest method.
Thanks Samir_a
Do I actually need to restore stock recovery? If so, where can I get that?

Cf root method restores stock recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33298782 and yes to do ota udate you need stock recovery

Ok I ran the CF auto root to restore stock recovery.
But now I have downloaded the ota update 3 times, and on clicking install it fails immediately.
Previously it rebooted into CWM recovery.
Any ideas what's wrong now? I'm guessing I can download a full update and flash it another away, but I assume that will erase all settings.
Try to flash via odin or if u r rooted use mobile odin . Im now on jb 4.1.2 i flashed my note via mobile odin in 5 min
Thanks mexman_2010.
However if I use odin that will trash my settings won't it?
Is there no way of getting the ota update to work?
You dont need to retore stock recovery or fiddle with odin. Just use kies on your computer and it installs the update for you. All your data should still be intact after the process but it is recommended to backup first
Keep in mind that updating using kies removes root
The ota's are using the patch method;
effectively what they do is work out the difference between the new binaries and old binaries and just send a patch that changes the old into the new.. this is done to keep the ota as small as possible I presume.
so if the binary isn't identical to what was shipped with the rom its trying to update then it will have to fail, otherwise you'd end up with an almighty great mess of non booting or corrupted devices.
if they used the file method (complete apks etc like an cwm style zip) then it shouldn't matter, but as it is, the only way to ensure a patch will work is to make sure the files are identical to what the patch was generated against, root allows you to change system files, so root is the primary way of checking if the system has been altered.
ergo if you want otas then you're most likely going to have to run them from a stock rom.
Thanks for all the info guys.
Bizarrely though, having left the Note overnight. It downloaded the OTA update itself and this time when I clicked install it worked perfectly, so
all is well again.
Thanks for the help everyone.
Please every one. I need help with my n8000. Currently i am on stock ics rooted with zedomax cwm installed. Is it safe for me to install OTA update or can i just switch back to my stock recovery by flashing it through odin? I have downloaded the stock recovery so im waiting for your replies

Why don't you just install the latest version from sammobile with Odin or Mobile Odin instead of using the complicate way?
Can i revert to stock recovery by flashing through odin and still keep root?
Sent from my GT-N8000 using xda app-developers app
Yes you can do that, install stock recovery using ODIN, you will need to use triangleaway to reset your binary count though.
Also make sure the stock recovery is for your devic

Have a few questions.

I've been wanting to root my phone because I have Tasker And TiBa pro. The last two S3s I've had hard bricked so I'm hesitant to attempt to root again. I've been looking around and saw somewhere that the boot loader can't be unlocked on 4.3, and I was wondering if I could still root my phone. Considering they did not brick until I rebooted once, I think I might be able to but want confirmation before I attempt it again. Also, since I will just have root with an unlocked boot loader I won't be able to flash CWM or custom ROMs, right? Not even via mobile Odin? Thinks that's all I have to ask right now, thanks for your help in advance!

Which OS do you have on your phone? Please provide this info.
If you are on the VRUCML1 4.3 OTA, it has a locked bootloader and prevents you from Odin flashing any firmware that pre-dates 4.3 VRUCML1. Flashing anything in Odin will lead to a hard brick unless it is explicitly the VRUCML1 4.3 stock image. Do not attempt to install CWM or TWRP, this will lead to a hard brick. Do not use anything to unlock your bootloader, you will also hardbrick. You can not unlock the bootloader on VRUCML1 4.3 ota, it is permanently locked. You should understand by now that you can flash one thing in Odin and that is the VRUCML1 4.3 stock image.
If you are on the VRUCML1 update, use Saferoot to gain root access. Then use Safestrap to be able to flash VRUCML1 4.3 based custom roms. Only VRUCML1 or "ML1" roms are compatible with Safestrap. AOSP is incompatible with Safestrap, there is no timetable or even the hint of future compatibility. Also, if you want working wifi then you need to flash the VRUCML1 kernel modules after each clean flash of a VRUCML1 rom. These kernel modules are linked in the Safestrap thread as well. Good luck and read up!
Thanks very much! I'll attempt to root with the saferoot method to root my phone. I'll report back if anything goes wrong.

Everything should go pretty simply once you use SafeStrap now. I operate with the "try before you buy" mentality. Everyone has different tastes and you should try what's available. CleanRom 8 Core and MOAR are a good way to start and I think each VRUCML1 rom available only gets better once you see what they have to offer.

[ROOT] Universal root method for all variants.

hey guys, this is just a package made with my "Rickys Rom Kitchen", will root any android device with a working custom recovery!
Note: all i did was make this universal and make it a flashable zip.
So, you know the drill, your warranty is now viod, flash at your own risk blah blah.
How to root?
1. Flash philztouch recovery or any supported recovery for your device with odin - INSTRUCTIONS AND DOWNLOAD HERE
2. Make a nandroid backup from within philztouch recovery
3. Flash my universal S5 rootkit INSIDE PHILZTOUCH recovery - DOWNLOAD FROM HERE(PhilzTouch)
4. (OPTIONAL) install busybox from playstore and download my Samsung Tool app and backup EFS! - DOWNLOAD HERE
Thats all.

regarding KNOX
sorry, don't want to turn this thread into a discussion, but it feels appropriate to ask here;
once Knox is tripped, can it be re-instated?
I don't mean reducing the counter back from 0x1 to 0x0, erasing all evidence of a rooting,
rather, just allowing the device back to a secure state.
Even SM-g900a?
So this universal root method will also work on the AT&T varient?
Samsung galaxy S5 SM-g900a?
can someone confirm this working?
Will this work under Canadian's carrier?

Flash latest btu nf4 firmware, root and knox 0x0

hi
i have managed to flash the latest btu firmware root and keep knox 0x0.
i used mobile odin pro and used the latest flashable zip in this thread thanks to mdiaz33685
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2760452
you are looking for a zip file called "N9005XXUFNF4_hlte_Stock_Odex_Not_Rooted_NoKnox.zip" this zip is normally a cwm flashable zip
next flash the zip using mobile odin pro and use the ever root option.
you should have the latest firmware and knox at 0x0
hope this helps and not a fluke on my behalf
edit: i was coming from nd3 firmware and used towelroot to root
edit 2: instructions step by step from post further on
On ND3 firmware root with towelroot
Install Mobile Odin Pro
Download zip from http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23501681358557264
On SuperSu i had Survival Mode on
In MOP select the zip file you have downloaded in the OTA section
Make sure EverRoot and all options are ticked including wipe Dalvik cache
Flash the zip then when booted up go to SuperSu update binaries and you should be rooted and knox at 0x0.
Modem can be flashed separately using the full tar file from samfirmware.com and flashing in MOP selecting only the modem fields.
