[Q] Rooted and can't install OTA update - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
I rooted my Note 8010 using Zedomax' method. All has been fine. My note has now downaloded the JB OTA update, but it fails to install.
I assume I need to restore 'stock' recovery to install the OTA update? But where can I get this from.
Also will installing the OTA remove root? And will Zedomax' method still work to re-root after applying the update.
Regards

Installing the OTA should not remove root but if it does just use the exynos abuse patch app to root that is the simplest and safest method.

Thanks Samir_a
Do I actually need to restore stock recovery? If so, where can I get that?

Ok I ran the CF auto root to restore stock recovery.
But now I have downloaded the ota update 3 times, and on clicking install it fails immediately.
Previously it rebooted into CWM recovery.
Any ideas what's wrong now? I'm guessing I can download a full update and flash it another away, but I assume that will erase all settings.

Try to flash via odin or if u r rooted use mobile odin . Im now on jb 4.1.2 i flashed my note via mobile odin in 5 min

Thanks mexman_2010.
However if I use odin that will trash my settings won't it?
Is there no way of getting the ota update to work?

You dont need to retore stock recovery or fiddle with odin. Just use kies on your computer and it installs the update for you. All your data should still be intact after the process but it is recommended to backup first
Keep in mind that updating using kies removes root

The ota's are using the patch method;
effectively what they do is work out the difference between the new binaries and old binaries and just send a patch that changes the old into the new.. this is done to keep the ota as small as possible I presume.
so if the binary isn't identical to what was shipped with the rom its trying to update then it will have to fail, otherwise you'd end up with an almighty great mess of non booting or corrupted devices.
if they used the file method (complete apks etc like an cwm style zip) then it shouldn't matter, but as it is, the only way to ensure a patch will work is to make sure the files are identical to what the patch was generated against, root allows you to change system files, so root is the primary way of checking if the system has been altered.
ergo if you want otas then you're most likely going to have to run them from a stock rom.

Thanks for all the info guys.
Bizarrely though, having left the Note overnight. It downloaded the OTA update itself and this time when I clicked install it worked perfectly, so
all is well again.
Thanks for the help everyone.

Please every one. I need help with my n8000. Currently i am on stock ics rooted with zedomax cwm installed. Is it safe for me to install OTA update or can i just switch back to my stock recovery by flashing it through odin? I have downloaded the stock recovery so im waiting for your replies

Why don't you just install the latest version from sammobile with Odin or Mobile Odin instead of using the complicate way?

Can i revert to stock recovery by flashing through odin and still keep root?

Yes you can do that, install stock recovery using ODIN, you will need to use triangleaway to reset your binary count though.
Also make sure the stock recovery is for your devic

as long as you have stock recovery it should flash over just fine
If you've rooted and installed CWM I dont think you will be able to update with the OTA update because you aren't using the stock recovery. Also, once you update OTA I think you will lose root anyway. Why don't you just flash a custom rom? That way you can run android 2.3.4 without losing root..
I'm running stock with s-off and I have cwm installed. And I get my its notification. Every other day I just decline. So the answer is yes u will get it as to what will happen if u accept and sl Idk. U prolly loose root.

OTA Update Works with Root
I downloaded the OTA, copied it to the root of my sdcard, renamed it to update.zip and applied it using recovery.
If you're using the super user app, the apps that have preferences saved will continue to gain root access. Apps that do not have a preference stored will be denied root no matter what. So it's 1/2 way there. Unforunately I didn't save this preference for my shell.
So do not do this if you need root to work flawlessly right now. I will try to re-root and report back later.

[Q] Install official update when rooted?

I downloaded the update from the system update button in settings. And it downloaded the update but I didn't install it yet. Is it okay to install it even though I am rooted? I just don't want to brick my phone

As far as I know, you have to unroot to install the update.
There are also a couple other threads on this exact issue, in which myself and others have already explained how to accomplish this.
The key to successfully take/install ATT OTA updates is to be on stock rom (all bloatware intact and unfrozen), stock kernel, stock modem, and most importantly... stock recovery (3e). For me, didnt matter if I was rooted.

Firmware usually refers to the ROM. Use recovery to flash. Most won't lose apps but often a good idea to wipe cache/Dalvik. Use RootKeeper to save SU.
And OTA is Over The Air.

ok thanks... im used with the nexus s flashing and other mods, usually i just put the rom in the memory and flash away, in P6800 i need to be very careful on the firmware im about to flash and how im going to flash it, coz im afraid it will get bricked. anyways i went to samsung official firmware download site and got this P6800DXLP8_P6800OLBLP7_SMA.zip 582,282kb file which i believe is for p6800 in the philippines using smart telecoms. so the method is just put this in my memory or sd card and then flash away? or extract the files inside then use Odin to flash it. im a bit confused here...

[Q] Help Restoring P5110 to Stock

I am looking for some help regarding my Tab 2 10.1.
My tab was rooted and then flashed with Cyanogenmod 9.1.
Also ClockworkMod recovery 6.0.2.7 was installed.
What I want to know is how do I restore it to its stock firmware and have it as if it was new, root free with no evidence of custom firmware i.e reset flash counter
All help welcome!
I was in the same exact situation, i am now back to official stock rom with no signs of mods. Here's what i did. This works on all galaxy tab 2 devices by the way.
-First download stock official 4.1.1 p5110 rom and flash it with odin.
-Start up your tab to see if it's back to stock rom.
-Next you have to root it with CF-autoroot and flash it with odin.
-You should now have stock official rom with stock recovery and a rooted device.
-Now download Triangle Away app for free over at the XDA forums (google it) or support the DEV by purchasing it on Google Play.
-While using triangle away, reset the flash counter, the app would then close after it's done. Make sure that triangle away did the job by opening the app and viewing the status Official with 0 flash counts.
-Now open SuperSU and go to settings and select full unroot, your device would then be unrooted.
-Lastly, put the tab to stock recovery mode and factory reset the tab.
You should now be good to go as if you have never modded the tab, to confirm, go to settings<status and check what it says on the status. If it says official than you are done.
NOTE: Be aware that Triangle away is said to hard brick your device if mishandled, according to the DEV. However i have never bricked my device over the dozens of times i have used this nor have i seen anyone brick because of this. For more information view the XDA Triangle away post.
Thanks for the quick reply. I have another question.
I have Clockwork Recovery installed but I want stock recovery. Any help?

If you have a stock ROM, it will run /system/etc/install-recovery.sh which will re-install the stock recovery. If you're rooted, that's the easiest way to get the stock recovery back (chmod 544 /system/etc/install-recovery.sh then /system/etc/install-recovery.sh)

The firmware should come with Stock Recovery. If ODIN do not flash it with Firmware then you try to flash the Stock Recovery only..If still not done then use Odin mobile ver and try.

lost recovery, what now?

Quick question. I got my verizon GS3 yesterday, and after rooting it on 4.1.1 I downloaded ota rootkeeper, backed up root, upgraded with the ota using TWRP, and restored root. Root is working fine on 4.1.2 but i got a message that said update failed. It has all the right info in about phone, the only issue i see is that I'm back on stick recovery. How is the best way to get custom recovery back? Do i need to do the full bootchain flash sequence in Odin, flash just recovery in Odin, or can i use rom manager to install recovery? Thanks!
Why can't u just download it again from the play store? If u initially had it all your info should still be on your phone; j7st need to reinstall recovery. I have to do this with CWM & TiBu every time I flash a new ROM.
In short just reinstall recovery. Hope this helps.
