I rooted my phone but haven't flashed any roms yet. Will I be able to get the 2.3.4 ota update when it becomes available. Or will I have to unroot my phone.

as long as you have stock recovery it should flash over just fine
If you've rooted and installed CWM I dont think you will be able to update with the OTA update because you aren't using the stock recovery. Also, once you update OTA I think you will lose root anyway. Why don't you just flash a custom rom? That way you can run android 2.3.4 without losing root..
I'm running stock with s-off and I have cwm installed. And I get my its notification. Every other day I just decline. So the answer is yes u will get it as to what will happen if u accept and sl Idk. U prolly loose root.

OTA Update Works with Root
I downloaded the OTA, copied it to the root of my sdcard, renamed it to update.zip and applied it using recovery.
If you're using the super user app, the apps that have preferences saved will continue to gain root access. Apps that do not have a preference stored will be denied root no matter what. So it's 1/2 way there. Unforunately I didn't save this preference for my shell.
So do not do this if you need root to work flawlessly right now. I will try to re-root and report back later.

How do i save an OTA Update on my SDCARD
I use an stock and unrooted Device and want to backup the official OTA befor i flash it, cuz on this way i could reflash the OTA when i killed somthing in the flashed rom
To save the ota on your phone update as usual but when the download finishes just click install later. It will be saved on your sdcard.
But having the ota wont help you if you screw up your phone. The ota will only update from the version you currently have, you can't use it again.
What you need is a ruu.
But what is when i try to get the Wildfire Froyo ota, can i use that for flashing again?

First i s-off with revulutionary and i cant do root. Secon question if i root my phone but not install custom room will i be able to update my phone with ICS via OTA when its realase. Thanks
Your first question is lacking detail. Second, upon installing a custom rom, you abandon OTA updates for better, custom roms. That being said, just wait for one of our talented devs to build their ICS roms off the official release, which will only be a day or two after the official release.
you will be able to get ota update if you are root. but after ota update u may lose your root.

You need to flash custom recovery and superuser to get root access. Now for ota you need stock recovery so even if you run rooted stock Rom you can't install ota update. You need to run ur ruu then install stock Rom with recovery to get any ota update.

If anyone runs Stock rooted RUU ( coz to root , custom recovery is not mandatory) , he will be able to get OTA update.

If you don't install custom recovery. Or don't want to change any Rom or anything in ur phone what is the point of rooting. In my opinion then better not to root at least u don't void warranty.

He he, there are many reason for which I wan to be root even on stock. like I want to use titanium backup, to install custom boot animation and sound, to use addfree, to use root explorer, to use samba, to use SD Speed boost, to use Wifi adb, and many more.

That's good but still doesn't serve the full purpose of rooting. Any way let's cut the chase its all personal choice, you like it that way while I like it other way.

Anyway staying apart from chase , I would tell you that I do use custom ROM (you can see from my signature). But to install custom ROM on sensation , you need not to be root . At least it is not mandatory. What is mandatory is you must be S-OFF and a custom recovery installed. To install custom recovery you again need not to be root. In fact I already have replied someone on how to install custom recovery without being root.
And once you have custom recovery installed and you are S-OFF you can install any ROM of your choice depending on your firmware.
Hi.
I rooted my Note 8010 using Zedomax' method. All has been fine. My note has now downaloded the JB OTA update, but it fails to install.
I assume I need to restore 'stock' recovery to install the OTA update? But where can I get this from.
Also will installing the OTA remove root? And will Zedomax' method still work to re-root after applying the update.
Regards
Installing the OTA should not remove root but if it does just use the exynos abuse patch app to root that is the simplest and safest method.
Thanks Samir_a
Do I actually need to restore stock recovery? If so, where can I get that?

Cf root method restores stock recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33298782 and yes to do ota udate you need stock recovery

Ok I ran the CF auto root to restore stock recovery.
But now I have downloaded the ota update 3 times, and on clicking install it fails immediately.
Previously it rebooted into CWM recovery.
Any ideas what's wrong now? I'm guessing I can download a full update and flash it another away, but I assume that will erase all settings.
Try to flash via odin or if u r rooted use mobile odin . Im now on jb 4.1.2 i flashed my note via mobile odin in 5 min
Thanks mexman_2010.
However if I use odin that will trash my settings won't it?
Is there no way of getting the ota update to work?
You dont need to retore stock recovery or fiddle with odin. Just use kies on your computer and it installs the update for you. All your data should still be intact after the process but it is recommended to backup first
Keep in mind that updating using kies removes root
The ota's are using the patch method;
effectively what they do is work out the difference between the new binaries and old binaries and just send a patch that changes the old into the new.. this is done to keep the ota as small as possible I presume.
so if the binary isn't identical to what was shipped with the rom its trying to update then it will have to fail, otherwise you'd end up with an almighty great mess of non booting or corrupted devices.
if they used the file method (complete apks etc like an cwm style zip) then it shouldn't matter, but as it is, the only way to ensure a patch will work is to make sure the files are identical to what the patch was generated against, root allows you to change system files, so root is the primary way of checking if the system has been altered.
ergo if you want otas then you're most likely going to have to run them from a stock rom.
Thanks for all the info guys.
Bizarrely though, having left the Note overnight. It downloaded the OTA update itself and this time when I clicked install it worked perfectly, so
all is well again.
Thanks for the help everyone.
Please every one. I need help with my n8000. Currently i am on stock ics rooted with zedomax cwm installed. Is it safe for me to install OTA update or can i just switch back to my stock recovery by flashing it through odin? I have downloaded the stock recovery so im waiting for your replies
Sent from my GT-N8000 using xda app-developers app
Why don't you just install the latest version from sammobile with Odin or Mobile Odin instead of using the complicate way?
Can i revert to stock recovery by flashing through odin and still keep root?
Sent from my GT-N8000 using xda app-developers app
Yes you can do that, install stock recovery using ODIN, you will need to use triangleaway to reset your binary count though.
Also make sure the stock recovery is for your devic
Since I know the question will come up immediately after someone has updated to the official JB I figured I would confirm that I was able to preserve my root (stock locked bootloader) by using voodoo ota root keeper.
If you have rooted but not unlocked your bootloader yet and still want to keep root on the Jelly Bean update do the following, I can confirm this worked for me:
1. Install voodoo ota root keeper.
2. Backup root and then temp unroot using the above.
3. Install official 4.1.2 OTA
4. After upgrade/reboot go back into voodoo OTA and restore root.
5. Open superuser and confirm
I was going from the last stock (asa14) rooted only, no boot loader unlock. Using koush's superuser.
Of course if you have already unlocked your bootloader & installed another recovery then this is not needed.

Did you actually do the OTA update with this, or is there a process that I can install the download from this forum to a rooted phone (still with locked bootloader) to update to JB? Would it just upgrade my device then like the OTA, or would it wipe it?
I got the OTA prompt this morning so I first went into voodoo ota and and ensured i was backed up then temp unrooted and did a check for updates then installed OTA.

OK, seems to be hitting in MN, but not in PA yet.
I believe someone posted the update zip in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2229671
I didn't flash using this so I can't speak to how to go about flashing it but it should be relatively strait forward.

Anyone else give this a try yet? I tried to prevent my phone from updating, but it started the download on its own and I cannot stop it.

It downloads the update file automatically but won't install it until you give it the OK. Posting this from my q right now, up to 4.1.2. Unfortunately I didn't think to back up my root and it was undone.
So is there anyway to keep my recovery or root when I flash an ota update?
If there is no way. Then anyway to install cwm and root from just the phone?
I do my updates etc when I have down time and that's usually on lunch or when my laptop is not around so handling everything from the phone would be very nice.

You will lose root when flashing an OTA, but it is just one extra step to flash the SuperSU (takes less than a minute) to regain root. I keep the SuperSU file on my phone and just flash it from there.
I use TWRP, and haven't lost my custom recovery while flashing 4.4.1 or 4.4.2 yet.
(I stay stock rooted - you can't safely take OTA if you aren't on the stock ROM)

I haven't used CWM, so can't say. But with TWRP, I flashed the update, and let the phone start up fully. Then, when I saw that root was gone, I shut down and booted back into TWRP, and flashed SuperSU. and then, booted back up. TWRP is still there.
(I'm rooted, stock ROM with custom recovery as well)
I use TWRP also. I flash the OTA, then Flash the SuperSU and then I reboot. Have yet to lose root
So not really a way of keeping cwm or root... But this is how I did it without needing a computer with me.
Flashed updated in cwm... Then flashed root... Then reboot... Used ROM manager to reinstall cwm.... Everything is good to go.

Or do like I do wait a couple of hours for one of the great devs we have here to give us a fully working updated stock rom with su and busybox built in.
All you can ask for from a rooted stock rom.
Download the system images and use flashify to flash all the files you need.
