[Q] how to save OTA on SDCARD - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

How do i save an OTA Update on my SDCARD
I use an stock and unrooted Device and want to backup the official OTA befor i flash it, cuz on this way i could reflash the OTA when i killed somthing in the flashed rom

To save the ota on your phone update as usual but when the download finishes just click install later. It will be saved on your sdcard.
But having the ota wont help you if you screw up your phone. The ota will only update from the version you currently have, you can't use it again.
What you need is a ruu.

But what is when i try to get the Wildfire Froyo ota, can i use that for flashing again?

as long as you have stock recovery it should flash over just fine
If you've rooted and installed CWM I dont think you will be able to update with the OTA update because you aren't using the stock recovery. Also, once you update OTA I think you will lose root anyway. Why don't you just flash a custom rom? That way you can run android 2.3.4 without losing root..
I'm running stock with s-off and I have cwm installed. And I get my its notification. Every other day I just decline. So the answer is yes u will get it as to what will happen if u accept and sl Idk. U prolly loose root.

OTA Update Works with Root
I downloaded the OTA, copied it to the root of my sdcard, renamed it to update.zip and applied it using recovery.
If you're using the super user app, the apps that have preferences saved will continue to gain root access. Apps that do not have a preference stored will be denied root no matter what. So it's 1/2 way there. Unforunately I didn't save this preference for my shell.
So do not do this if you need root to work flawlessly right now. I will try to re-root and report back later.

There are two versions listed here, one for the unrooted & other for the rooted.

How to Flash GB Radio to fix any GPS issue
1. Download the latest GB radio for the HTC Glacier (12.62.60.27_26.13.04.19).
2. Make sure the filename is PD15IMG.zip exactly or it will not work and copy it to the root of the SD Card.

You can't rename and boot it in your bootloader like the official update.
This rom is designed to flash only through recovery.
The stock rom is modified, rooted & busybox is also added.
So try to flash through recovery only.......don't try to do the bootloader method.
In terms of upgrading using the unrooted method and the official 2.3.4 rom (1st method), will all apps and settings be preserved? Or will it be a fresh install?

The first method is a fresh installation, just same as that you do in a T-mobile store.
The Rom itself is copied from the T-Mobile Sd Card.
So, you will lose all the data in your phone memory, the sd card will be unaffected.

So if you want to enjoy root privilege, you should downgrade from 2.3.4 to stock 2.2.1 and then do a permroot.
Just follow this steps for an error free downgrade.
1. Download the stock 2.2.1 rom here.
2. Rename it to PD15IMG.zip
2. Place it on the root of your sd card.
3. Remove the battery and Switch On your phone while holding the Power button & the down volume button.
4. The hboot menu will update your phone (do according to the hboot instructions).
The original bootloader is 0.86.0000
Now reboot & enjoy your update......This is the original T-mobile 2.2.1 version....so no worries.....
After that you need to root your device and install ClockworkMod Recovery. Follow this post.
When you are permrooted, you can install rooted 2.3.4 Rom using Recovery.
Cool Ty so the rooted version is same as the one from t-mobile update just rooted

I just rooted my phone Stock 2.3.4 (GB) by downgrading using the Permanent S-OFF (gfree). I loaded the Stock Rooted posted here, everything works but the GPS. The GPS icon is not showing eventhough I have it clicked on. When using navigation it just said "Searching for GPS" and will not lock to any GPS signal. Anyone having the same issue?
I tried a different ROM Virtous Unity and the GPS is working fine, then switched back to Rooted Stock 2.3.4 same issue.
The GPS issue....
Some of the users reported bugs in the rooted stock Rom......
So if you are experiencing this problem try reflashing. If this didn't work out well for you, Try this alternative.
Download the rooted 2.3.3 Rom. It's bug free. You can download it here.
If you are experiencing any bugs in the listed Roms, please report.....

OTA

If I want the ota do I have to lock fastboot or can I just flash a fully stock rom. I saved my stock rom from when I first rooted.

The bootloader can stay unlocked.
Sent by pocket technology.
Cool as long as I have the original rom, kernel and ect...... I think it was 2.3.6. I don't need to lock bootloader thx

You can't flash an OTA on anything but stock recovery. You would be better off waiting 10 minutes for a flashable .zip to be posted on the forums so you don't have to do anything but wipe data.
Since you are going to restore to 2.3.6, you will probably be able to update the phone to 4.0.4 atm. And if that works, then the OTA for Jelly Bean will probably work too!

Wrong
Again in order to manually flash a official ota you NEED a custom recovery. It no longer works on stock recovery. The ota installs on stock recovery IF you get it pushed to you. It will fail to automatically flash ( as far I know) if the ota is pushed to your device and you click on reboot and install with a custom recovery.
You NEVER have to wipe data when applying a ota.

[Q] Rooted and can't install OTA update

Hi.
I rooted my Note 8010 using Zedomax' method. All has been fine. My note has now downaloded the JB OTA update, but it fails to install.
I assume I need to restore 'stock' recovery to install the OTA update? But where can I get this from.
Also will installing the OTA remove root? And will Zedomax' method still work to re-root after applying the update.
Regards
Installing the OTA should not remove root but if it does just use the exynos abuse patch app to root that is the simplest and safest method.
Thanks Samir_a
Do I actually need to restore stock recovery? If so, where can I get that?

Cf root method restores stock recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33298782 and yes to do ota udate you need stock recovery

Ok I ran the CF auto root to restore stock recovery.
But now I have downloaded the ota update 3 times, and on clicking install it fails immediately.
Previously it rebooted into CWM recovery.
Any ideas what's wrong now? I'm guessing I can download a full update and flash it another away, but I assume that will erase all settings.
Try to flash via odin or if u r rooted use mobile odin . Im now on jb 4.1.2 i flashed my note via mobile odin in 5 min
Thanks mexman_2010.
However if I use odin that will trash my settings won't it?
Is there no way of getting the ota update to work?
You dont need to retore stock recovery or fiddle with odin. Just use kies on your computer and it installs the update for you. All your data should still be intact after the process but it is recommended to backup first
Keep in mind that updating using kies removes root
The ota's are using the patch method;
effectively what they do is work out the difference between the new binaries and old binaries and just send a patch that changes the old into the new.. this is done to keep the ota as small as possible I presume.
so if the binary isn't identical to what was shipped with the rom its trying to update then it will have to fail, otherwise you'd end up with an almighty great mess of non booting or corrupted devices.
if they used the file method (complete apks etc like an cwm style zip) then it shouldn't matter, but as it is, the only way to ensure a patch will work is to make sure the files are identical to what the patch was generated against, root allows you to change system files, so root is the primary way of checking if the system has been altered.
ergo if you want otas then you're most likely going to have to run them from a stock rom.
Thanks for all the info guys.
Bizarrely though, having left the Note overnight. It downloaded the OTA update itself and this time when I clicked install it worked perfectly, so
all is well again.
Thanks for the help everyone.
Please every one. I need help with my n8000. Currently i am on stock ics rooted with zedomax cwm installed. Is it safe for me to install OTA update or can i just switch back to my stock recovery by flashing it through odin? I have downloaded the stock recovery so im waiting for your replies

Why don't you just install the latest version from sammobile with Odin or Mobile Odin instead of using the complicate way?
Can i revert to stock recovery by flashing through odin and still keep root?
Sent from my GT-N8000 using xda app-developers app
Yes you can do that, install stock recovery using ODIN, you will need to use triangleaway to reset your binary count though.
Also make sure the stock recovery is for your devic
