Hey guys, I bought a Nexus 5 on the day of release and after a long time of using it I finally gave up so I decided to post this.
Is there any way to receive and send MMS messages without having to manually turn Mobile Data on and off?
I owned a Nexus 4 & A ****ty LG p506 and didn't have this problem. Heck, when I had the p506 I didnt even have a data plan! And the N4 was on the exact same chip as this N5! (Not to mention other non-smart phones...)
A couple of days ago I turned on data by mistake and got MMS group messages from hours before, that's when I decided that it was enough and did some research.
First I tried changing from that awful Hangouts app, got 8sms but nope, still need data on.
Then I read something about the OS, So I finally gave in to flashing CM11 (Which had it's own messaging app) but nope.
What's the issue here? I don't wanna drain my battery by having my data on all the time... Is it even possible to receive and send MMS on the Nexus 5 without having to manually turn on data? I absolutely love the N5 but I'm losing phone functionality here...
Hey
I don't know why but on KitKat i can't send/receive MMS with data off.
It worked on earlier JB, ICS, GB...stock ROMs also CMs..
Well i tried several solutions, even with Andoird Firewall app and few filters, but finaly i tried TextraSMS (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.textra) which have and extra option for that - "turn on data automaticly while sending/receiving" MMS
And voila it works.
Now i'm stick with Textra but some fix or no matter how call this would be nice..
Cheers
You can install Tasker and set profile to auto receive mms but works only for receiving not for sending. For sending you will have to turn on data manually.

I also tried figuring out why this was happening. After searching around It looks like mobile data needs to be enabled in order to receive and send mms as it goes through a data connection, however if you have mms included in your plan it wont go towards your data usage as the carriers differentiate between mms and browsing. It would be cool if there was a setting implemented to only turn on data when you send an mms though as I imagine it would be annoying to turn it on and off when you want to send a mms message.

Yeah great idea
Textra do all for me
If I were you, I'd leave mobile data on and use your phone the way it's meant to be used. I can't imagine trying to deal with turning mobile data on and off for something as "necessary" as MMS. If you're having battery issues, try another kernel or maybe even buy a cheap anker external battery pack. They're like 20 or 25 on amazon and theyre worth it.
I'm a fairly heavy user with lots and lots of music playback (meaning my nexus never really sleeps) and it lasts me all day.

Mehh, I'm not a big fan of wasting battery for no reason. It already lasts more than a day, I can easily squeeze 2 days of use and still have ~10% left at night on the 2nd day (By not having NFC, LTE, BT & GPS on the whole day for no reason). The issue is not about battery life, the issue is efficiency of such. I don't wanna have to worry about charging my phone all the time like an iPhone user.
Well,I tried Textra out and it did the job! Thanks for the suggestion guys
I still can't believe the step backwards that was taken in KitKat. I love everything about KitKat BESDIES the messaging (Both Hangouts and the MMS problem that also affects other apps, Even CMs messaging app doesn't "automatically" do MMS the way it did back with my N4 with CM10. Then again, CM's quality has decreased to the point that I don't even want it on my phones anymore...)
My best guess regarding the issue is that the messaging apps are using the wrong APN settings. I noticed that Textra automatically sets up APN settings, and at first it didnt work.
When I decided to fiddle around with it I set it up so it uses my phone's default APN settings (MMSC: mmsc.mobile.att.net / MMS Proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net) instead of the app's own default settings (MMSC: mms.cingular.com / MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com) and voila! it worked.
I'm guessing all other apps are still using the cingular defaults so they don't work, and they don't give you an option to change it so they will never work.
Then again, I don't even know the difference between using the cingular APN settings or the mobile.att APN settings. My phone defaults to mobile.att but when I look up stuff online it's all about cingular (The N5 also has the cingular profile but does not default to it). Can anyone shed light on this? I'm using a GoPhone prepaid plan, maybe that's why its a different APN?

Yes, completely stock other than Franco kernel in order to run a color profile that takes away the yellow tint my screen has

Since as long as I can remember, it has been possible to set up a 2nd apn with mms settings and type "mms" rather than "default" which should allow data to turn on when an mms is received. Never tried it on my Nexus though

I've searched and googled the heck out of this but no luck. Is there an app or hack to get texts to go thru wifi without needing a new number or the other person I'm texting needing the same app.
I live in the middle of nowhere and got att to send me the microcell. But its a pos. It kills my battery within 4 hours (actually destroyed my battery so it doesn't hold a charge even away from home w out the mcell) and it doesn't let me send texts. Long story short att refused to try and figure out the issues. Would t even replace the battery. Bunch of dirty words....I hate them. If I had the 800$ they wanted for me.to cancel my Contract I would.
But anywho. I'm selling the mcell and trying to figure out a way to use wifi without getting a Google voice number and all.
Please and thanks!

I don't know of any app, or just not aware. I use google voice, it's a great alternative. Very easy setup. Notifies me right away when someone sends me a message.
Completely dropped their sms plan because it's too much. I don't care about mms, but they will have it in the future.

Google voice...gives you a new number. Text thru your data our wifi. Must have...get it from market
Do you have to pay at all for the gv SMS?
I'd reaaalllly rather not need a new number but if it's free and the peopleim texting don't need the app then I guess I'll try.
Ps my battery bc of this macrocell has gone from 45% to 3% in 2 hours. That's not connected to this pos microcell either. Pos!!!!!Gunna get an extended battery....any oneknow of a better than the rest brand or site for them?
Thank you

It's absolutely free. No catch. Just set it up, and you're good to go. And no the other party does not need the app. MMS support will come, just depends on our carriers. You can receive MMS from sprint users.
I don't know about the battery, head over to the accessories section of the infuse, there's a thread there with suggestions and links to them.

Battery depends on what is eating it up.
Display, data wifi, music, maps.
Check you battery stats and see what it's using your battery.
You can dim the brightness. Turn off wifi when not using with the toggle.
Download a data toggle from the market, dataswitch. UnInstall maps if you don't use it
These three will increase the battery between charge.
The extended battery from legit company will inc time. They can be expensive. Chinese knockoff aren't really that much more effective..ymmv

I appreciate the tips but I've done it all. The phone will be on standby. Sitting on the desk no gps no wifi and full five bars of microcell. The wench on the phone had the cahones to tell me a phone should on standby only last 6 hours. Eff her in the a. I hate customer services wenches. Seriously. My phone on standby with nothing on gets 4 hours and that's "pretty great" blow me.
Sorry. Anywho I tried juice defender too. The battery is just plain old shot prob from the glitch the mcell is doing g and draining it while its charging when I'm sleeping

I'm curious about the micro cell. Can you go in settings, sync, and turn off data n sync for a few hr or at night ?
Gv..download from market and install. After your setup, you should be able to text or call from it. You have to associate it another phone number like your cell #. You can also try setting it up on the pc and under the settings add the phone number linked
No matter what I do with the mcell it.fails miserably. The only work around I found was for texting so I didn't have to hit resend fifty times even though it said five bars. You have to turn off wifi for the texts to go through. Makes no sense to me but after 4 collective hours on hold w att that's what I did to get it to work. They've done nothing but laugh at my issues and thank me for my money. The data turn off didn't help either. Just wouldn't let me emails come through...yea I know that doesn't make sense either.
Its going on eBay tonight or tomorrow. I'm sick of it. At least on my one bar of service in bumblefook I had a day and a half of battery and only had to hit send once. Ill just start using gv for calls if I need to.
Once again eff att

Since it's been less than a year since you purchased the phone, you can take advantage of the 1 year warranty on the phone and the battery. Go into a corporate location (not an authorized retailer) and have them call the warranty department and send you another battery and/or device.

yeaaaaa you see they did that for me the begining of the month. I had issues with the phone so they agreed to send me another one....but then they sent along a battery with it. So the 1.5 hour convo I had day before yesterday w some miserable SOB ended in me being beyond pissed bc she said the magical "notes" said I told them i needed a new battery so they sent it. Which i never said. She said sorry mam i cant send you another one bc you just got one.. even though the effing microcell is the reason the battery is dying and blah blah effing blah i hate them so much wah!
::SIGH::
So yes, they only replaced it once and won't again.
You think if I tried a store they'd help more?
The other end of the microcell story is that they mailed me one from a random store bc the warehouse was out of them....so that means they can't replace it for "malfunctioning" (which its not it just sucks check the att forums and here) unless i wait 30 days. That took me 2 weeks just to get them to send it out....but not to me bc they dont send to po boxes...had to have it sent to someone 2 hours away from me and ask them to drive it out. WOOHOO ATT FOR THE WIN!

I've had wifi issues since I purchased my htc one x for AT&T in may. I have had the hone replaced and the issue was never resolved and I'm kid of fed up with it for the fact that everyone I know who has an android device other then a one x don't have these issues. Issue seems to be Interment but happens a lot actually all the time.
Basically my issue is I have wifi turned on sometimes I lose connection.i notice this due to delayed alerts at times and when I'm using the phone such as on the play store, Facebook or any app that uses the I telnet every once in a while ill get a connection loss message and have to wait for the Internet to come back, usually comes back quick but still very annoying. Another ways can tel is when the phone is in sleep mode is when it happens the most. For example ill unlock the screen at times then all of a sudden I receive all my alerts such as gmail, google talk and any other alert that never came through b c of loss of connection. I also notice a lot when I open google talk right after I unlock my screen that it says I'm offline, then after a few I see it come online and if I had any google talk messages they then come through. I also see the time stamps when this happens, like emails come in and google talk messages and they can be anywhere from like 2-15 mins delayed at times.
I have also performed various of tests when the phone is asleep and I s end myself an email or google talk message and it does not come in until I unlock the phone. FYI this is Interment does not happen all the time but happens very often.
Are you guys still having issues with wifi ? Will getting a replacement possibly resolve the issue or sis this a known issue that cannot be fixed? I love the phone but sick and tire of not receiving all my alerts in real time. This is the first android phone with this type of issue and so frustrated.
Have you checked your wifi settings to make sure it's staying connected while the phone is asleep?

Yes of course checked all bases including forums for the last couple of months. Please note as per my op even when I'm using the phone sometimes I get lost connection errors even while using the Facebook app etc like google play store and other apps. So although while asleep seems to happen the most it also happens during normal use.
This is a known issue with many HTC phones. Even if you have WiFi to never sleep, when your display turns off the WiFi goes into some sort of battery saver mode. It doesn't turn off completely so you get your alerts eventually. I have not found a working solution short of flashing a custom Rom. HTC knows about this but hasn't fixed it. They think it is working as it should...

Thanks for clarifying this for me. If you flash a rom like for example cm10 or other rooms it can resolve this issue? Funny bc if wifi is shut off on just data works good, but the whole point is to use wifi as much as possible since I only have 3gb limited. I was thinking of upgrading to a one x+ but I'm afraid it will have the same issue as the normal, one x. This makes me want to go with a different company such as Samsung etc.. Anyways thanks for your help.
I switched to this Motorola RAZR HD from my GS3 about 2 months ago. I love the phone. Battery life is awesome, and the phone is lightning fast.
However, in the past week or two, I found that I cannot send MMS messages when connected to WiFi. When I turn off WiFi manually, I can then send MMS no problem.
I do recall doing an OTA update about 10 days ago, which is right around the time my problem started, but I'm not 100% sure that this started exactly after the OTA update. I've also been noticing since the OTA update my phone has been a bit laggy. My phone used to be lightning fast, but now its acting like my GS3 that I had. Again, not sure if this is at all related to any of the other things.
So whats the wifi fix? Is there a known problem with the latest OTA update?
I'm on 4.1.2.
Build #9.8.1Q-62_VQW_MR-2.
System version 9.16.6.XT926.Verizon.en.US
Thanks guys?

I am aware of that. It is my understanding that the phone disables WiFi to send an MMS and then enables it after the message is sent. It used to work just fine. I don't know what could be causing my problem. I have not changed any settings.
Just wanted to update that I'm still having these problems. 50% of the time the phone will send MMS. The other 50% of the time it will just hang there and keep trying to send and I manually have to turn off wifi to get the MMS to send. Phone still lags, probably worse than ever.
This is also not the same phone as when I first posted. I had a replacement from Verizon a few months ago. The problems carried over with the new phone.
I have been using an app called Clean Master to clean my cache and unwanted files. Seemed to work well at first, but now it doesn't feel like it does anything.
First things first: I'm new to Android & this phone (came over from iPhone about 2 weeks ago). So I apologize in advance if this is some old issue that's been talked over endlessly - I'm new to this Android stuff.
That said, I'm having tons of issues with my text messaging. First, I downloaded and tried the "SMS Messaging (AOSP)" app and it was giving me problems of not getting messages from people. This was android & ios users alike. So then I switched to Google's "Messenger" app and it seemed to work a lot better - I was getting picture messages, iMessages, everything in order and speedy. I have yet to do my texting thru Hangouts because I'd prefer not to, but if it'll solve my problem I guess I will.
Right now it's at the point where everything is out of whack, and sometimes just not sending/receiving at all. I think WiFi has something to do with it because if I'm sitting at home connected to the WiFi, it's almost non-functional, but if I switch the WiFi off, it seems to work a little bit better. Also, at this point it seems like texting from Android to Android is fine, but sending/receiving from someone on an iPhone is huge problems.
Is there a setting I need to change? A different app? Is this just something I have to live with til Android M? Help!
Thanks!

No. I got it certified pre-owned thru TMobile about 2 weeks ago. It works perfectly in every other way and when I unboxed it and unwrapped the cling wrap it looked like a brand new phone.
I really think it has something to do with WiFi because when I'm out all day and only connected thru LTE, I send and receive messages completely normally from iOS and Android devices. Never heard a complaint or "hey are you getting my messages" when I'm on LTE.
WTF.

Texts and MMS use your data plan, not WiFi.. How is your signal where you are having issues? Hangouts will send MMS via WiFi if going to someone else on hangouts.

Signal is just fine when these texts are giving me issues. I'm usually within 10 feet of the router and full signal. If I walk or drive a block away, I'll get texts immediately that I know were sent earlier. Same goes if I turn off WiFi on my phone.
This makes absolutely no sense.
I have literally had to pull the Sim and installing on my previous One Plus 6 as SMS are so slow to arrive (about 5 to 10 minutes) so that 2 factor fails! Times out, blocking site access.
I've never in multiple years had a problem where SMS takes 5+ minutes to arrive expect with a phone. I can not even access many sites when the Sim is in the One Plus 7 Pro, but in the One Plus 6 (running ASOP no issues within seconds I get SMS), so it is not the carrier it is the One Plus ROM that is at fault, why is this ROM (9.5.4) so broken! What can I do to get SMS in a reasonable period, on this phone as I hate to switch the sim 2x times a day simply to get an SMS message and access a site. Ready to just shut this down until I can get ASOP for the phone if this is a problem that can not be worked around.
Just completely disgusted with SMS messages and One Plus 9.5.X on T-Mobile!

Cannot relate. Texts come in within seconds on my 7 pro. Perhaps check with customer service to see if everything is set up correctly? Or perhaps the area you're using the phone lacks service?
Working well here, perhaps your apn settings need some review
This started happening for me yesterday completely randomly. But it seems fine today.
I am able to get the sms's in 4 - 5 seconds after requesting.
At first I thought it might be a network issue. But it worked fine when I put the SIM in another phone.

Thank you, very happy to hear it happened to some one else. I've check it is not the APN, however I'm wondering if it is related to the use of Wifi Calling, I need to do another test.

I think I know what caused the issue for me. I was using 1.1.1.1 (Cloudfare DNS) on factory resetting my phone, The DNS also went back to default and I no longer have issues with SMS's
Hmm, sorry to hear that OP. Not having any issues with texts etc.
