I'm am pondering upon the purchase of an OTG cable for my moto g. I have heard from other forums that an OTG cable does not work with this new update. I would like to connect a memory stick or a PS3 controller. They also note that you need a programme to fix this problem. Answers would be appreciated :good:
OTG does work - provided you se a 3rd party app like total commander + usb plugin or Nexus Media Importer
I use the Meenova usb otg device - no cable.

Nonsense!
OTG works like a charm on 4.4.2.
Just use Total Commander + OTG plugin (both available from GP market).

Great, but can you copy a movie (bigger than internal memory) on the USB stick and play it from there? I mean, can you press open from Total Commander and have your video player run this USB file just fine?

As others said you need total commander and usb stick plug-in to work. And it will be fine if you are with unblocked bootloader and unrooted. You can only pass up 30mb files on the free version. So, think on purchasing it. Is very cheap!
If you are rooted you can also try Stick Mount + Astro, It works and are free of limit and prices or Directory Bind
For fully working Ps3 controller you must me rooted
Greetings
That's what I like to know. If I root can I use Otg like link2sd? Would like to download games from store and install it on stick. Would that work?

Is there a way of backing up the phone using otg? I have a back up programme that writes the back up to otg usb by providing the path to write to. This works fine on my Samsung S3 running android 4.3. I can't get it to work on my wifes Moto G using stickmount and total commander with kit kat installed. Anybody managed to do this?
I've connected a keyboard and a mouse via USB OTG to my Moto G 4.4.2 and it works as it should.

Yes, I can get those to work as well but nothing from a memory stick, is there a free app to enable OTG memory stick use? I want to transfer files from my old phone memory stick and use as a carry round storage.
i use the following otg adapter with a 32gb micro sim
http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00GT8QZKQ/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

With no root, try Total Commander & the usb plugin. (search on google play)

And you can move all app data to the USB? Let's say fifa 14. I wanna move the data on the USB and whenever I want to play I plug the USB in and play the game. Can you try it for me? I tried but didn't get it to work. Maybe my otg is not working well. Thanks for any help.
Gesendet von meinem XT1032 mit Tapatalk
Yes, you can move your Fifa's data folder to the sd card and from the sd to the internal memory. But you cannot play with the 'data' folder on ur sd card.
I've tested this with 3 different games. I keep the apk installed and move 'data' and 'obb' files from internal to external. Then, when I want to play a game, i just move its data back to the internal memory.
Worked pretty well with Total Commander + USB Stick Plugin.

If you wan to have data (or obb) files from your game on SD, you need root, and e.g. FolderMount

You will probably need an app like USB MassStorage Watcher or Drive Mount (both free) to mount/unmount the drive. It will show up on the same directory level as sdcard (internal storage) and external1. It will be at usbOTG.

i m in same boat. I have XOOM wifi USA version. It is NOT ROOTED.
does it work to read USB drive without rooting?

No, you must be rooted and running a custom kernel or Rom that support usb host mode.

Thanks for reply. I m totally new to rooting etc.
well is android 4.0 is going to release for this XOOM model soon? and does it resolve this issue?
I'm betting that our developers are making us an ICS Rom with usb host mode support...
will this also work with a usb gender like http://www.amazon.com/USB-Gender-Changer-Female/dp/B000BSN4UY/ref=pd_sim_e_2 in stead of a usb otg?
I have installed android 4.0 on my motorola xoom wifi usa version.
it is NOT ROOTED.
Can i read usb drive ( pen drive or external hard disk ) with this Or still rooting is needed?
I have following adapter.
http://www.amazon.com/Micro-USB-Mal...3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1327371621&sr=1-3
is only rooted is Ok or it need to install other custom OS version?
it will be great somebody can reply ASAP.
So there is no other app that doesn't require root? I just want to hold on rooting the device..is USB OTG supported with 4.0?
I order this phone without SD card only because of rumors saying that it's USB OTG works, not like Nexus 4, which I returned after failed trying to get USB OTG working.
Now I get this phone on my hand, but failed to let it recognize any or my USB sticks nor SD card through reader.
Is there anything special I need to make USB OTG to be activated?
Otherwise I would like to return this to Google. I won't use any Cloud **** for my storage: 1) security reason 2) mobile bandwidth is very costly here 3) upload stream is normally limited at 30kb/s
Well that's good, since the n5 doesn't have an sd card slot.

Hello,
just wanted to ask whether one of the Moto G users here could test whether a 2.5" external hard disk without own power supply works with USB OTG on the Moto G. (I can use, for example, my SGS2 with an external disk, but it has to have a power supply because the USB port doesn't deliver enough current.)
Thanks in advance!

I use my WD 1TB hdd with a OTG cable sooo, yeah i guess it works (im on pink kernel)
I have a 2 tb seagate external hard disk(2 TB Seagate EXPANSION 3.5 inch, uses external power source). It doesn't show in the phone. Actually, the device is connecting (a blue notification will light up in the hard disk), but it doesn't work. I have read somewhere that it will not work on NTFS file system, without root . So, I shrunk the hard disk and created a partition with fat32 file system. Still, it doesn't show on the phone. Any ideas?

Thanks. It works. I came to realize that this functionality is available with ES file explorer. Whenever, I try to access the disk, the application is closing unexpectedly. I couldn't make it work in ES. Is there any space limitation for that? I am trying to load a 2tb drive. It works fine with total commander though.

you can only access ntfs with total comander but if you root your phone then there is few apps on google play which will alow any file manager to open ntfs hdd...if not rooted i guess your only choice is total commander for now.
edit if your hdd is fat32 or exfat then es file manager can access it.

I posted this info in a facebook group and a few of the members are claiming that they are able use ES to mount the NTFS drive. Unfortunately, I couldn't do the it. The app is getting stopped and the drive is unmounted while accessing the NTFS partition. Anyway, NTFS file system is supported in ES(I checked their commit messages). I use ES a lot, it will be convenient if I could make it work.
thanks for your help

It might be worth the $4 for Nexus Media Importer available on the Play Store. I tested it on the Moto G and it's working flawlessly. Keep in mind there's always the off chance your OTG cable is incompatible.

OTA in KitKat is natively integrated by Motorola. No app needed. There is setting for it in storage settings.

Depends on which variant you have - it seems that the single sim variants don't have native support for OTG USB Storage under 4.4.2 (they do for other OTG USB pheripals), but as another poster mentioned it looks like an OTA may be on the way to rectify this.

If your device is rooted ... then in my opinion ...(if it should be a third party app) best thing is stickmount ..
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount
Using the dual sim XT033, the Kitkat update retains the USB OTG functionality and has storage dismount and format options in the storage menu. You can now even write on the mounted storage now.
One word of caution. USB OTG works on FAT32 (files less than 4GB) but not for NTFS. For NTFS you'll have to root. Maybe a more experienced user can tell us what Linux partitions are supported without root for filesizes >4GB.
Anyone has an idea about using USB Mass Storage with Moto G ? I mean mount internal storage for example in Total Commander as drive like pendrive.
NTFS does work without root if you've installed Total Commander with USB Stick Plugin :good:
Since the new German OTA (176.44.1) the phone wants to format all NTFS drives, and if you unplug it there will be a Notification stating "USB drive not inserted"
Didn't try to use fat32 yet...
