[Q] USB OTG on Nexus 5 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I order this phone without SD card only because of rumors saying that it's USB OTG works, not like Nexus 4, which I returned after failed trying to get USB OTG working.
Now I get this phone on my hand, but failed to let it recognize any or my USB sticks nor SD card through reader.
Is there anything special I need to make USB OTG to be activated?
Otherwise I would like to return this to Google. I won't use any Cloud **** for my storage: 1) security reason 2) mobile bandwidth is very costly here 3) upload stream is normally limited at 30kb/s

Well that's good, since the n5 doesn't have an sd card slot.

Don't worry about it as long as you tried! The XDA search sux a lot...

Without rooting you can access USB-Sticks using the filemanager "Total Commander" in combination with the "USB-Stick Plugin".

You will probably need an app like USB MassStorage Watcher or Drive Mount (both free) to mount/unmount the drive. It will show up on the same directory level as sdcard (internal storage) and external1. It will be at usbOTG.

Thanks for the tip! I got the Drive Mount app and it did the trick. Was starting to worry that the cable I got on eBay was a fake.

i m in same boat. I have XOOM wifi USA version. It is NOT ROOTED.
does it work to read USB drive without rooting?
current OS version on my XOOM is 3.2.1 (HTK75D)
No, you must be rooted and running a custom kernel or Rom that support usb host mode.

Thanks for reply. I m totally new to rooting etc.
well is android 4.0 is going to release for this XOOM model soon? and does it resolve this issue?
I'm betting that our developers are making us an ICS Rom with usb host mode support...
will this also work with a usb gender like http://www.amazon.com/USB-Gender-Changer-Female/dp/B000BSN4UY/ref=pd_sim_e_2 in stead of a usb otg?
I have installed android 4.0 on my motorola xoom wifi usa version.
it is NOT ROOTED.
Can i read usb drive ( pen drive or external hard disk ) with this Or still rooting is needed?
I have following adapter.
http://www.amazon.com/Micro-USB-Mal...3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1327371621&sr=1-3
is only rooted is Ok or it need to install other custom OS version?
it will be great somebody can reply ASAP.
So there is no other app that doesn't require root? I just want to hold on rooting the device..is USB OTG supported with 4.0?

Yes. If you have a dedicated card-reader for your PC then it will almost certainly be quicker for transfering the files than using your phone in the middle.

g8.close thread.
What phone are you actually using? If you're trying to transfer files from your PC to your Phone, by using its USB cable should make the work easily done. But if its an older phone, a card reader is the best option that you can get. Just in case that you are using a smartphone that kinda latest or even not quite latest, you can try using AirMore. Its an app that you can use to wirelessly transfer your files from phone to PC and vice versa.

[Q] OTG doesn't recognise my USB memory card

Hi, when I plug in my usb memory nothing happens, I installed USB OTG Helper and I get code 5, I already tried another memory card and it doesn't work either, however, I tried a mouse and it works perfectly, what can I do?
Maybe only FAT32 file system is accepted.
The usb disk is formatted in NTFS or FAT32?

I just checked and it is FAT32, I have never used OTG so I don't know what to do...
EDIT: I just checked OTG Troubleshooter and it even says the model of my usb memory stic so I'm guessing the issue is I can't/don't know exactly how to acces the data on it

It might be worth the $4 for Nexus Media Importer available on the Play Store. I tested it on the Moto G and it's working flawlessly. Keep in mind there's always the off chance your OTG cable is incompatible.
I have the same problem after updating to kit kat (only works wireless keyboard), in 4.3 all worked perfectly. All usb has mounted with FAT32 system.
Sorry for my english.

Are you sure that you used a third party tool to mount the USB? KitKat doesnt support OTG anymore/at the moment.

Yeah that seemed to be the issue I installed stickmount and that seemed to do the trick however the app that I used previously gave code 5 and didn't work, thanks!

SD Card Format

ROM: CM 11-20140204-NIGHTLY-skyrocket
I've done some searches and was not able to find anyone with the same issue as me. So, erased my SD card through the ROM (Settings > Storage > Erase SD card
I rebooted the phone, and it told me there was a blank SD card in there and I needed to format it. Well, every time I try to format it, my phone reboots. I tried doing it through recovery, and it told me error mounting SD card.
Any ideas on how to fix this or is my SD card shot? It was working perfectly fine before I erased it. I would plug it into a computer, but i don't have an adapter.
Thanks in advance!
Format it in your computer. Use FAT32 file system and do a quick format.

its not really an adapter, its the usb cable that came with the phone or any samsung cable, blackberry cable and many others might even work
Vin his problem isn't the cable bro it formatted incorrectly the phone doesn't recognize it and can't mount it via recovery to format it. He just needs to toss it on a computer and do it from there.

No error... Just the internal card showed up. I tried mounting it and then plugging in the phone, same thing. Really strange. Yea, adapter isn't a huge deal, just caught me off card that it reboots my phone when I try to format it through the ROM.

it's all written in the title thread. how to unmount *USB* otg on cm12? if i disconnect forcedly, it says "unmount *SD card* before disconnecting" warning message on the notifications, and if i try to re-mount usb otg it doesn't read anything (no pendrive or usb things).

Try using USB OTG Helper from the Play Store.

Under settings, storage, and Scroll down to the USB section. You will see unmount USB. Looking for better ways to do this, but have so far not had any luck.

Quite an old thread, but for your solution there, I don't have any USB section on it. It is just Internal Storage and SD Card. (CM12.1 on Zenfone 5)
Is there any other method that I can use? Thanks in advance.

not entirely sure, my phone shows a USB section, but only when a USB device is inserted. not sure why your device does not show the USB section. even more confusing when you are on CM12.1, same as my phone has.
sorry, can't help you on this one.
maybe look at the app in the comment above mine?
USB OTG Helper. if the description is accurate it could help.
Oh.. this app is actually to the point. Thanks
