USB stick compatability? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can u plug a full size USB stick into the xoom at all?
Sent from my DEFY running CM7 using XDA App

u need the host cable- by the Motorola one it will work, alot of the cheap ones won't.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/260879217802?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
that one works, i have several. The same guy sells an led-less version for $4 that works too.

how does it work? Does it show up as a new folder in the file manager?

You will probably need an app like USB MassStorage Watcher or Drive Mount (both free) to mount/unmount the drive. It will show up on the same directory level as sdcard (internal storage) and external1. It will be at usbOTG.

Thanks for the tip! I got the Drive Mount app and it did the trick. Was starting to worry that the cable I got on eBay was a fake.

Cool! Thx 4 all the posts...

i m in same boat. I have XOOM wifi USA version. It is NOT ROOTED.
does it work to read USB drive without rooting?
current OS version on my XOOM is 3.2.1 (HTK75D)

No, you must be rooted and running a custom kernel or Rom that support usb host mode.

Thanks for reply. I m totally new to rooting etc.
well is android 4.0 is going to release for this XOOM model soon? and does it resolve this issue?

I'm betting that our developers are making us an ICS Rom with usb host mode support...

will this also work with a usb gender like http://www.amazon.com/USB-Gender-Changer-Female/dp/B000BSN4UY/ref=pd_sim_e_2 in stead of a usb otg?

I have installed android 4.0 on my motorola xoom wifi usa version.
it is NOT ROOTED.
Can i read usb drive ( pen drive or external hard disk ) with this Or still rooting is needed?
I have following adapter.
http://www.amazon.com/Micro-USB-Mal...3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1327371621&sr=1-3

is only rooted is Ok or it need to install other custom OS version?
it will be great somebody can reply ASAP.

So there is no other app that doesn't require root? I just want to hold on rooting the device..is USB OTG supported with 4.0?

[Q] 3.2 Update SD card support & USB host

does anybody know how this will effect all of the mods out there that allow you to use as USB host? like for hooking up a thumb drive, charging phone, etc.
Thanks

I can tell you that USB Mass storage watcher OTG (available on the market) lets you mount a USB drive. you need to choose where to mount it. I chose to have it mount at the next free mount point next to External1 (external sdcard) Choose mount drive, use it --it played some MP4 videos flawlessly (better than before) through the stock video player. When I was done, went back to the watcher app, clicked on unmount and removed it safely. I haven't tried anything other than sdcard and thumb drive on 3.2 though, as I don't tether.
do you have to be rooted for that to work?

It does ask for root permissions, but I'm not certain if it's necessary.
Check out dinomight's thread in development. He's the app's developer and he's really nice. I'm sure he'd be happy to help you out.

I believe that you must be rooted to use the Xoom in USB host mode. I've been rooted from a couple of days after I bought my Xoom, so I don't remember.
You do have external sd card (read only) right?
Make sure that 'USB Debugging' is disabled.
i'm afraid you need custom rom for this.

Then as I thought, you need to be rooted and install a custom kernel or rom (Tachi kernel or Hammerhead rom for HC3.2) that says it enables usb OTG host mode in the releas notes. Then you can use your OTG cable (and the free app USB Mass Storage Watcher OTG) to mount and use thumb drives and newer HHDs (that don't require much power to run).

Thanks for the reply. Where can I get the steps for rooting? Is it possible to go back to custom rom after rooting?

Yes you can flash a custom rom.
For the correct rooting guide for your Xoom model (3G or WiFi-only, country of origin) check out the Xoom Heaven thread in General section 1st, to see if your Xoom model is addressed there.

[Q] USBOTG doesn't work

Hi to all!
Here's the problem that I have.
After upgrading my Xoom (US 3G) to Tiamat 2.1 Hammerhead USBOTG stopped to work. When I try to connect flashdrive via this cable it blinks only once and that's all. The folder USBOtg is empty -> nothing is shown (but I know that there are files). I tried to format flashdrive to various filesystems (NTFS, FAT32) -> no result.
Another strange thing after upgrade is with MicroSD folder. It shows me only old data. All new one that I copied to it via PC it doesn't show at all. AND!!! PC doesn't see the content of folder with name "external" on Xoom but when I copy there files from PC then Xoom can see them.
May anyone advice any steps to return usbotg and microsd in normal working state?
I tried to re-flash Xoom with previous various versions of firmwares (mods) -> the same situation.

Two different issues--if you read the release notes with the Hammerhead Rom, Team Tiamat removed the USB Mass Storage enabling that had been in earlier Rom, due to various difficulties. So that means you can no longer use your PC to copy files into the micro sd card in the Xoom, but you can cop files directly to the sdcard using an adapter or card reader. Your Xoom should still have access to the files on your micro sd card at mnt/external1.
The usbOTG works fine for me but it needs the help of an app like USB Mass Storage Watcher OTG or Drive Mount. Both will work. It also helps to reboot with the drive plugged in the first time if you are having a hard time getting the Xoom to recognize it.
Thanx! Drive Mount helped me with recognizing and mounting flash drive (but only after Xoom reboot with drive plugged in). USB Storage Watcher OTG crashes everytime when I start it with drive connected -> with disconnected it starts normally but won't see any after-connected drives. Ssems that I'll use Drive Mount program
As for MicroSD -> even connected directly to PC and copied some files to it Xoom still sees only old data. Any ideas?

Actually, try checking the folder mnt/external1 (1) as this is HC3.2's official mount point. The Microsd mount point is an artifact of an older Rom.
i am using hammerhead rom with tachi kernel.
yup the usb otg not working.
tried both usb watcher and drive mount.

Make sure that you are using a REAL usbOTG cable.
A real USB otg cable? What needs to be special about the cable in order for it to work?

Your cable will never work because it is not OTG. OTG has a different pin configuration to allow the Xoom to function in usb host mode. If you are handy with a soldering iron you could make one, but why not buy one, they are availble. Here is my Google search for USBOTG Xoom to get you started: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=usb+otg+xoom&aq=2s&aqi=g1g-s9&aql=&oq=usbOTG

Problem with external hard drive since upgrading to ICS EOS WIFI

I haven't been able to get my external hard drive (Samsung S2 750GB NTFS formatted) to mount since upgrading to Team EOS Wifi ICS ROM. I normally use USB Mass Storage Watcher app to mount the drive but although this is recognizing that I have the drive connected and it allows me to click mount it doesn't mount the drive and the option doesn't seem to acknowledge that's its mounted by changing to unmount. TBH I'm not even sure if the drive is already mounted as its location could have been moved in ICS, like the micro SD cards was. I've also tried selecting the USB mount option in Storage settings but this doesn't seem to work either, though it does cause the drive light to flash off and on when its selected. Also I've noticed in USB Mass storage watcher the drive location is listed as dev/block/sda but I've tried checking here and mint/usbotg with root explorer but have had no luck. BTW I'm on build 45 ATM.
Any help appreciated.

This works for me too, on my ICS rooted Xoom. None of the others I could find, including 'mass storage watcher' did.
I managed to sort the problem by using USB Mass Storage Watcher to create a new folder for my drive, after that I could access it fine. Weirdly the drive would not show up before that and I am 100% certain I was checking the correct location.

OTG USB

My moto g 16gb arrives tomorrow. OTG USB is very important to me. I've read that kit Kat disable the functionality. I know there are a lot a third party work around apps that get the job done but I'd prefer a kernel that does so. Is anyone aware of one? I can't find it listed anywhere. Thank!

There is a Motorola update coming that fixes OTA in Kit Kat should be here any day now.
OTA in KitKat is natively integrated by Motorola. No app needed. There is setting for it in storage settings.
Its working on kitkat

Depends on which variant you have - it seems that the single sim variants don't have native support for OTG USB Storage under 4.4.2 (they do for other OTG USB pheripals), but as another poster mentioned it looks like an OTA may be on the way to rectify this.

German OTA is already in the wild and the UK should come soon too.

If your device is rooted ... then in my opinion ...(if it should be a third party app) best thing is stickmount ..
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount
Using the dual sim XT033, the Kitkat update retains the USB OTG functionality and has storage dismount and format options in the storage menu. You can now even write on the mounted storage now.
One word of caution. USB OTG works on FAT32 (files less than 4GB) but not for NTFS. For NTFS you'll have to root. Maybe a more experienced user can tell us what Linux partitions are supported without root for filesizes >4GB.
Anyone has an idea about using USB Mass Storage with Moto G ? I mean mount internal storage for example in Total Commander as drive like pendrive.
NTFS does work without root if you've installed Total Commander with USB Stick Plugin :good:
Since the new German OTA (176.44.1) the phone wants to format all NTFS drives, and if you unplug it there will be a Notification stating "USB drive not inserted"
Didn't try to use fat32 yet...
