External hard disk, bus powered, possible? - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
just wanted to ask whether one of the Moto G users here could test whether a 2.5" external hard disk without own power supply works with USB OTG on the Moto G. (I can use, for example, my SGS2 with an external disk, but it has to have a power supply because the USB port doesn't deliver enough current.)
Thanks in advance!

I use my WD 1TB hdd with a OTG cable sooo, yeah i guess it works (im on pink kernel)

I have a 2 tb seagate external hard disk(2 TB Seagate EXPANSION 3.5 inch, uses external power source). It doesn't show in the phone. Actually, the device is connecting (a blue notification will light up in the hard disk), but it doesn't work. I have read somewhere that it will not work on NTFS file system, without root . So, I shrunk the hard disk and created a partition with fat32 file system. Still, it doesn't show on the phone. Any ideas?

File Format of NTFS supported by ES file explorer...

Is it possible without root? I just bought this phone. I don't want to void my warranty. I tried to enable root explorer. Didn't work

yes it can work without root and you can connect ntfs external hdd.....just install both "total commander" and "USB plugin for Total Commander" from google play and it will work
my WD elements 500gb(ntfs) connect fine

Thanks. It works. I came to realize that this functionality is available with ES file explorer. Whenever, I try to access the disk, the application is closing unexpectedly. I couldn't make it work in ES. Is there any space limitation for that? I am trying to load a 2tb drive. It works fine with total commander though.

you can only access ntfs with total comander but if you root your phone then there is few apps on google play which will alow any file manager to open ntfs hdd...if not rooted i guess your only choice is total commander for now.
edit if your hdd is fat32 or exfat then es file manager can access it.

I posted this info in a facebook group and a few of the members are claiming that they are able use ES to mount the NTFS drive. Unfortunately, I couldn't do the it. The app is getting stopped and the drive is unmounted while accessing the NTFS partition. Anyway, NTFS file system is supported in ES(I checked their commit messages). I use ES a lot, it will be convenient if I could make it work.
thanks for your help

Circumventing the FAT32 4gb file limitation

I love everything about Android, other than the fact that I can't watch any of my blu ray rips because they are over 4gb. I can format my ext SD into NTFS or eXFat but then the transformer wont see the card when I put it in. Same goes with it recognizing my external hard drive.
I have tried formatting the drive into some Mac format because I read it was a work around, but it wasn't detected when formatted as a mac drive. Is there a trick that I don't know about?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
i have not tried, but you could possibly format the card in a linux file format (ext3, ext4, etc) and then use a windows app that will allow you to read the linux file format.
or just split your larger files.

i believe some of the kernels on the dev section supports ntfs if you want to go that route...
other than that, you'd have to wait for ASUS to implemente NTFS themselves (i believe they just got a license from a 3rd party co. to use their NTFS driver, for th purpose of implementing it into their android devices)
I don't need a signature.

right, and honeycomb is *nix at its core and should be able to read and play the files on a linux formatted memory card... the challenge is getting windows to read that same card to load it, but that can be done with some opensource software.

Ah I see! Can anyone comment on this that has tried it before I go through the agony and possible waste of time?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Not much more to comment on, there are linux (ext3) filesystem drivers you can install on windows that should let you be able to load the SD card from within windows. As Android has *nix underneath it all, it should recognize the ext3 card no problem, and ext3 doesn't have the same 4GB limitation.
it does support ntfs for external hard drives.

In another thread i heard NTFS works, but i personally couldnt get it to work with my MicroSD cards
you might want to check out this thread also

My best guess is to root and install a kernel that supports NTFS
Or format to ext3 or ext4 and give that a try
I use this to access ext3 and ext 4 partitions on my Windows 7 machine
http://www.ext2fsd.com/
Works pretty well
i have a USB flash drive with NTFS. tried harry potter 720p mkv at 6.7GB and though it did see and load the file, it lagged to the point where it was unwatchable. This was on 3.01 and 3.1
I've played a 6 GB mkv off of my 320GB NTFS formatted hard drive, so shouldnt be an issue off of a card.
I'l try it later with one of my 8gb cards.

well NTFS support from a usb HDD is different from having NTFS support on the internal card reader... could also depend if NTFS is built into your kernel.
my TF works with a 8gb usb pendrive and my 750gb and 3tb external usb drive formated with windows 7 and plays dvd under 4gb
but did locked up when i opened a folder with a 9gb bluray file in it
Hmm I hope the file system for the TF isn't fat32, because like the previous poster said it would allow me to open my blu ray rips. Or would it? If the 6gb movie was located on another drive I don't see why it wouldn't play straight off the secondary drive.
I also can confirm that ntfs works just fine with external hard drives and usb thumb drives. Just not external SD cards.

the file system for the TF isn't fat32.... but it formats the uSD to fat32 for compatibility between the tablet and windows.
ntfs support for uSD and for external HDD are 2 different things.
NTFS and HFS+ filesystem support
I have recently tried this:
Paragon NTFS & HFS+
(can't post link as I am a noob :| so google it up or find it in the App Store)
It is free and it seems to work well with both Win (NTFS) and Mac (HFS+) disks. As far as I know it looks like an Android implementation of FUSE.

Problem with external hard drive since upgrading to ICS EOS WIFI

I haven't been able to get my external hard drive (Samsung S2 750GB NTFS formatted) to mount since upgrading to Team EOS Wifi ICS ROM. I normally use USB Mass Storage Watcher app to mount the drive but although this is recognizing that I have the drive connected and it allows me to click mount it doesn't mount the drive and the option doesn't seem to acknowledge that's its mounted by changing to unmount. TBH I'm not even sure if the drive is already mounted as its location could have been moved in ICS, like the micro SD cards was. I've also tried selecting the USB mount option in Storage settings but this doesn't seem to work either, though it does cause the drive light to flash off and on when its selected. Also I've noticed in USB Mass storage watcher the drive location is listed as dev/block/sda but I've tried checking here and mint/usbotg with root explorer but have had no luck. BTW I'm on build 45 ATM.
Any help appreciated.

This works for me too, on my ICS rooted Xoom. None of the others I could find, including 'mass storage watcher' did.
I managed to sort the problem by using USB Mass Storage Watcher to create a new folder for my drive, after that I could access it fine. Weirdly the drive would not show up before that and I am 100% certain I was checking the correct location.

[Q] USB 3.0 OTG cable (WD 1TB)

Hi all, I wanna drop a query here.
Did any body tried to connect Western Digital Hard drive to Note Pro 12.2? I did everything, but really, I was disappointed because I wasn't able to connect it using OTG Cqble.
What format is it? I haven't been able to get ntfs to work yet, each of my drives show up as blank drives. I'm not about to change them to another format just for this tablet... migrating files off and then back on after formatting wouldn't be worth my time.

I was able to connect both an NTF and. EXFAT drive to my unrooted NotPro. Had to use special software of the ntf and then it was read only. With the exfat it is r/w and connects with native software.

You mean that if I will root my NotPro, then I will be able to connect my 1TB to it, and transfer files, or only reading?

If you are willing to root you can connect an NTFS drive and read or write to it. Not sure it matters what size
If you are not willing to root you can only read ntfs but can read/write an exfat drive. Mine is 1Tb. I believe exfat does have a size limit but not sure what it is.
Sent from my SM-P900 using Tapatalk
Ironically is not as clear cut as that. I'm rooted and had issues with NTFS. Not sure why, but my 64 gb usb flash drive formatted NTFS would not work, neither would a 1tb Western digital passport. I tried stickmount, paragon and usb otg helper. Eventually dumping all three apps and formatting the flash drive to exfat was the only solution that would work. I'm only monkeying around so I'm not about to try to backup the hard drive to another one just to reformat it to exfat. I guess I'll buy a hard drive someday for this tablet. .. I'm starting to think that exfat is the most reliable way to ensure compatibility.

Well - yes and no.
I've just ordered this tablet and am very exited.
Regarding ntfs:
I tried this on my Note3. Yes i could read/write ntfs drives.
However I could only read 1 logical drive.
I had a 64 Gig stick partitioned in 2 logical ntfs drives. I could only access/detect one of them.
I read that this somehow relates to SE-linux in "enforcing" mode.
Couldn't figure out how to set to "permissive". A simple shell command didn't work. Yes I tried SU'ing the command as well.
Will try to find that post again.
If it is a se-linux related issue it stands to reason that it'll translate to Note Pro as well - doesn't it?
Regards
Elo

[How To] Enable Write to External SD Card

This app was written by Jrummy and states that it's for Kit Kat (he should probably update it as it still works). I've used it on every device I've owned since Kit Kat without a single issue. Just run the app and uninstall it when you're done (or don't but it's pointless after you've ran it). It's making a very simple (and reversible) change.
Root is required!

Does anyone know how to use your SD card as Mass Storage when you connect it to your computer?
Currently, to write to the phone from the computer, you have to use MTP. It's too slow though. I want to be able to access my external SD like a flash drive.
I have to eject my SD card from my phone and use a SD card adapter to connect it to my computer anytime I want to make any changes.
If I could mount SD card as Mass Storage while phone is connected to computer via USB, that would make things a lot easier.

When I connect my Mate 7 to the computer, it gives me the option to mount it as a regular flash drive or as MTP.
So, I think it's possible through a software mod.
All,
I just picked up a new Pure, and already have it rooted, and while I have read/write, I can't get the dates to change to the creations date, instead, it has the copy date. Will I need a custom ROM to fix this bug???
(I use a backup program to put "MY" file on the SD, and it tries to use the date to see if there's a change, but can't because it can't change the date. I use to be able to do this with rooted devices.)

There is no fix for Marshmallow other than using SD card as external storage?
I have my SD Card set up as portable on my 6.0 Pure, and BitTorrent Sync has issues writing to it. It works perfectly fine on my internal device storage, but starts encountering complete screwups on the SD Card. It did work when I had the SD Card formatted as adoptable, internal storage though.

Yep Xposed runs on this ROM, it's a great one. For those here for the original thread, I contacted support and sent them my logs and they were able to solve the problem in the next app update.
I'm getting about 5h SOT with moderate-heavy usage after 24h off the charger and a lot of music (Viper too) playing with the screen off. I have a solid amount of wakelocks disabled too, so that adds to it. Still think I should be able to push out some more.

4 TB External HDD OTG works perfect on computer but android says corrupted

I formatted my 4tb external hard drive to exfat because I didn't want to use the paragon total commander app to access it. It worked perfectly fine but all the sudden it says it's corrupted. It still works with my computer and with total commander on the phone but not natively on android like it used to it, it only asks me to format. I did a chkdsk and it has no errors. Is there any way to fix this without formatting?

My suggestion would be to format the HDD to NTFS and check to see if ES File Explorer is able to read and write to the HDD
Linux is build to support pretty much any filesystem of any size. ES File explorer should be able to flawlessly read your HDD when formatted to NTFS.
Let me know
I have a flash card that is formatted in NTFS and it won't read it whatever I do. But FAT32 one will work just fine.

You have to follow some specific steps to get NTFS formatted sdcards to work.
Make a search on Google: "How to Enable NTFS Support on Android: With & Without Root"
And check the article from TechPP. For NTFS formatted SDCARDS, you will need the root method of the article.
