Motorola no longer supports bootloader unlocking(?). - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After being unable to unlock my bootloader on my Moto G yesterday (triple-checked to make sure was entering the device ID right, tried several times), I decided to talk to their costumer support.
I was then told that motorola will no longer support unlocking the bootloader (she was not specific as to whether it's moto g-only or if other devices also apply). I was also told that they are going to update their website this week to remove the bootloader unlocking process.
I contacted the brazilian costumer support, so maybe it's a local thing. Maybe not even that, maybe I was just told a load of crap.
EDIT: Other users reported that everything is still working fine. However, no one from brazil replied yet. Has anyone with a XT1033 tried to unlock their bootloader this week?

Everything works fine in germany

Realy can`t imagine Motorola doing this, this is probably a misunderstanding of some kind. Its still operative atm, just checked it here https://motorola-global-portal.cust...e/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a/action/auth.

A few hours ago I unlocked the bootloader of my moto g and the website was working and I think it still does. Why would they end the possibility to unlock the bootloader?

1. First level support anywhere are clueless. Don't believe them. They generally know next to nothing and say anything to get to the next caller to meet call quotas.
2. Just keep trying....I had to wait a day, trying every few hours until I could get my x unlocked. The site is just wonky.

I am a little disappointed what you think about customer care. I process orders for customers and i know alot more about what other departments do, and i make sure i am well informed about alot of procedures. Just because those guys weren't informed yet about what was happening it doesn't mean they know next to nothing. And trust me we care more about quality rather than quantity. I am a bit hurt about your remark and i think when you go with that idea in mind, it is normal to have a bad interaction with customer care departaments everywhere since you think they know nothing. In that case, whenever a guy answers the call just call for a superviser, it's better for them, and for you, as you will make sure you are given the correct and accurate info and at the same time you spare the agent from the trouble of being a sarcastic customer

I've worked call centres way back...mostly on the technical end....my statements are true....for the most part. Of course there are exceptions...companies and individuals. There are always exceptions.
Didn't mean to generalize. But on average I stand by my statements. And I don't blame the people working the phones..i blame the companies. Poor training, poor wages, pressure to take as many calls a shift as possible...etc.....
They hire just about anyone...students taking completely unrelated things are a lot of the first line call takers....a lot of the workers are just there for a pay check...again tho...rapid and incomplete training and poor wages are a huge factor.
But yes again...there are always exceptions.
My apologies.

Triple checked, and tried many many times. Tried pasting directly into website, tried pasting into .txt, removing line breaks and spaces, then pasting on website. Trust me, its not the problem of me writing the wrong device id.

I tried to unlock my bootloader this weekend, until today, unsucess.
Then I left a message on the oficial forum website.
A user called Nicole Summers answered. She opened a case for me and forwarded to someone who can help. She saw my conversation with Brazil Support and gave them the correct point of contact, too.

[Q] Anyone else got a Call from HTC about leaving unhappy feedback from emails.

Ok I just got a random call from some guy from HTC, said his name was Eric but would not give a last name. He wanted to "follow up" on me saying I was unhappy about the whole S-Off/Bootloader thing. I he kept skirting the question of "Are we going to get out bootloaders unlocked or not?" He finally told me that they were waiting on Corporate to let "Them" know WHEN they would be unlocked, so I asked him to confirm that he just said at some point they would be unlocked, and he back tracked really fast and said IF they would be unlocked, and his dept. did not expect to know anything for a "month or two", but HTC was watching Twitter and Facebook and know the customers are unhappy, and they strive to make thier customers happy...yada ..yada..yada....I told him at this point a simple Yes or No would make me happy, but we all know I didn't get that either. So has anyone else got a call from "Eric" or one of his friends over at HTC? Maybe if they work together they can find thier asses from a hole in the ground!
I honestly feel bad for Eric. Low level outbound call center representative. His whole job is centered around contacting angry customers and trying to pacify their concerns without giving straight answers (which he probably doesn't even truly have).
I'm glad you didn't claim to tear him a new asshole or anything. Bottom line, let's hope the bootloaders are unlocked soon and Eric can take a breather right along with us.

No actually I was very nice to him. I even told him I was frustrated at the situation and NOT at him and I felt bad for him too. I think it is a shame HTC has hung these poor people out to dry with no real answers for anyone. I really would hate to have his job right now.
Well that's good! Although when I worked in a call center, if the person I was taking to sounded like a cute girl, it made my job so much better

I don't believe that they will open the bootloader
.
It's been now almost two months since the first Sensation hit the market on 19th May. We all want to believe the unconfirmed rumours (on FB, Twitter, but non on any official HTC site or document) that they will open the Bootloader, first for new handsets and then to us who have already got the unit.
The fact that there are some S-OFF unit circling around just shows that they know how to do it, but are not willing to roll it over to us.
I have lost all faith in HTC in this matter and now rely on those wonderful and talented developers to crack it.
.
Hi Chaps,
I've been having an issue with the signal on my phone, am now on my 4th Sensation..
I was on the phone to a really helpful chap at HTC and we were discussing exchanging my vodafone branded handset for an unbranded one (was never going to happen) but then I asked about rooting and unlocking the bootloader.
He went and had a chat with a colleague and came back and said that when the bootloader is unlocked, I will be able to flash the non branded firmware.
Rooting will void warranty, but flashing another firmware will be fine.
He confirmed this with another colleague, but as far as I can see, we will DEFINITELY get unlocked bootloader.
He didn't know when, but he didn't feel it would be too long to wait now!
Sorry for the off topic - though it is related...
I received a call from HTC from leaving a negative review from a survey they sent to me regarding an email I received from customer support. Basically said the same thing about the bootloader but did know about the temporary root for the Sensation. I guess that they are watching the dev. forum.

Of course they know what to do. They knew since day one. It's their device and their bootloader. IMO the problem are the carriers. HTC knows that people are unhappy with the locked bootloader policy and that they have to give their customers what they want or else there will be consequences. But on the other hand they have to keep the carriers happy. I believe they will leak the way and let the devs do the rest
Same here! I have faith that they will figure it out. )
No not off topic really. I was just really shocked when I got the call from HTC. I really did not expect to hear from them. Like I said I felt bad for the guy, but I feel that they should at least give us a yes or no. For that I have lost alot of faith in the company.
Hmmm.... Just got this in my email.

Really ? There's doubt in your mind that they don't know "HOW" to do it ? Ever occur to you that THEY are the ones that wrote the software for the bootloader and have every line of code for it available ? LOL
It was never a question of IF they know how to do it, it's a question of WHEN they'll decide to release the unlocked bootloader. It's politics, not technical know-how. Rest assured, they have plenty of that. LOL

I know some website where it is possible to unlock Alcatel, ZTE... phones for free, but nothing for Samsung.
Thanks in advance.

My first message in this thread is old, and I found by myself a much cheaper unlock provider than yours long time ago, so... thanks for nothing, gayraja...

AT&T's position on bootloader unlocking

Today I wrote a complaint to AT&T for interfering with HTC's bootloader unlock and I received this response:
Dear Christopher,
Thank you for contacting AT&T about your wireless service. My name is
Daniel D., and I will be more than happy to assist you with your inquiry
regarding software updates/OS information today.
I apologize for any frustrations that this may have caused you. After
some research, I am happy to inform you that AT&T doesn't interfere with
the software updates that the phone manufacturers provide. The only
stipulation that AT&T would have would be to ensure that the OS would be
optimized for AT&T's network. Please be aware that AT&T doesn't make
software for phones and we would never prevent our customers from
getting a better software update or OS.
We are sorry to hear that you are considering canceling for something
that is out of our control. In this case we recommend that you speak to
the manufacturer of the device. HTC can be reached at 866-449-8358.

The CSR seems to be indicating that AT&T isn't meddling and that the decision is HTC's. It's vague, non-commital customer service speak and almost certainly not true. . . . He also refers to the bootloader unlock as a software update from the manufacturer, so perhaps he just has no idea what I'm talking about.
I've written back asking for clarification on AT&T's official policy.
I suggest anyone who is unhappy with AT&T's behavior write to customer service and let them know.
It can't hurt to formally let them know that you're not pleased. Even if you're hooked into a contract at the moment, they really do care if you're less willing to renew next time around.

taht's a standard AT&T kiss off letter. They're saying they don't do anything to prevent HTC from sending updates to phones. Not That they aren't preventing the bootloader from being unlocked.
Big Bro does it again
Standard BS reply from the big bro... u know urself nothing in that letter is what they say it to be...
I sort of figured as much and edited my original post to reflect that. . .
It may not help, but I still reckon it doesn't hurt to write a letter or two.

SAFE? Gimme a break... Whatever AT&T keep the bootloaders locked! We will brick countless devices over and over until we find our exploit and you can foot the bill. Or you can let us unlock through HTCdev like the rest of the world and save yourself the time/money.
Oh no wait, that would be the smart thing to do, and you are all Morons.
Att reps have no idea what they're doing. This is a good example.
They basically said the exact same thing about the vivid when it was released. I didn't buy it then and don't know.
But thanks to the heat devs here we are able to unlock it anyway.
They can't stop the brilliant minds at work here.

There was something wrong with this letter, but I fixed it.
The guy has no idea. He doesn't even know what BL Unlock is. And he doesn't realize that AT&T DOES in fact prevent a lot of customers from using different software.
All of this is happen before and all will happen again.
I purchased the vivid right when it came out and we when thru hell to get any development going. Letters were sent to AT&T and HTC and they just laughed in our faces.
We called Mr.Chou a lair openly in the Twitter and facebook pages and to this day, they still claim he was not lying about not locking the bootloaders.
They eventually allowed the unlocking of the bootloader and then we got s-off. It was about 3 moths after release.
By contrast, note the HOX had some holes we have now xploided the the vivid did not have. So I think we have an advantage.
This is XDA some things may be difficult but definitely not impossible.

I wonder if they really know what a boot loader is and what the difference is between locked or unlocked. Also why would they say they don't lock the boot loader? If I was talking to him on the phone (or better yet, in person), I would tell him "Look, grab your HTC Vivid there. Hold down power and Volume down. It will boot into hboot. What do you see at the top?"
Doubt it would of helped though. And oh well. You know, you've just got to have some bumps in the road. We all need to have conversations with head guys over at AT&T every now and then. Laughter is good medicine. And you know what, if they are not cooperative... give them a link to the GFY page (some forums have a GFY button but this does not, defuq is up with that???), and do it yourself.
I do agree, difficult but not impossible. XDA Devs are awesome!
I wonder why this bootlader still isnt officialy unlockable? My new ATT OneX+ with cid CWS_001 is unlockable at HTC dev. I wasnt sure if you guys were aware of that. The plot thickens . Makes no sense to me.. Everyone sell your hox and get a hox+ lol. Bring Rom devs with you!

I haven't noticed any difference in the screen. JB is smooth, Gaming is awesome if you do that. The Hox+ stock feels as smooth as my tweaked Oc'd hox with custom roms. And i'm loving the 64gb! No regrets at all. Wish there was more development... but that'll come. I can test the screens side by side Monday. Left the hox at work. And yes it is ODD that the bootloader is unlockable at launch.

HTC DNA for Verizon was supported on htcdev up until launch day. Then it got pulled so its not unlockable(out of box). So at this point I'm fairly confused as to which phones are not unlockable and why......... Doesn't really matter why, but its not knowing that makes it so interesting

I swear I saw that coming...they were all happy and all fair witha all the HTC elevate members and whoever got the phone before hand and let the bl process be there till the night before...that makes me wonder why!!! Why do they Care so much..Verizon made some really questionable decisions with that device sucks as 16 gb no menu remap(come on?) No sd slot(really?) ....i wish HTC weren't in such a slump right now...they make the best phones in my opinions but when they come to the see US the carriers have them by their balls

Droid Maxx boot unlocker FREE

Ok, as of 4.4.x The device was unlock-able unless you pay some money to a Chinese website.
WARNING: You must legally own the device off contract for this to work!
Here are a few steps to try
1) https COLON SLASH SLASH motorola-global-portal DOT custhelp DOT com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
Go through the sign in process, and follow the instructions it is very straight forward. IF This does not work, which it did not for me, move onto step 2.
2) Call Verizon Wireless 1 (800) 922-0204. Provide them with your IEMI AND OEM Boot Unlock Code, found by following steps in step 1. The process of unlocking the device from VZW contract status can take up to 48 hours. Once done, go to the step 1 and go through the process of getting your unlock code.
They lock the devices because people who usually purchase these phones get them on contract and it breaks the ToS to do this.
That's it! Don't pay a Chinese website to do what you can do for free WITH YOUR LEGALLY OWNED DEVICE. I cannot stress enough how this WILL void, contract, warranties, etc... even any insurance you buy on the device. Water insurance is voided by doing this. If you are on contract they will deny you access if you still owe money on the device. It needs a clean IEMI for this to work!
Any mod wanna sticky this? Any mod want to fix the link please, this is not spam in any way.
Hi
I will have your thread moved to your device section. And threads must mature before being considered for a sticky.
Good luck!

Is the Verizon portion automated? This could be great news for a lot of people. Me, not so much since I upgraded to the Maxx back in Sept of this year. Lol
Proof that this worked?

I think this only works on developer edition phone but I could be wrong as I have not tried yet.
Verizon does not unlock non Dev phones period. If they did everyone would be doing it. If you could buy a standard maxx and unlock what would be the point of a Dev edition.

True, the thing that threw me off is that his procedure includes calling Verizon which is unnecessary with the DE and the fact he says it only works with a phone that is not on contract. So he is implying that Verizon is willing to let the phone be unlocked under that condition which I also seriously doubt because Verizon doesn't want unlocked phones on their network period, if they can have it their way. I screwed up and now I'm using a Moto X DE as the daily driver and the Maxx as a backup. I almost want to buy a motherboard with 4.4 on it so I can unlock it but the seller on eBay knows this is doubled the price. Bastard.
Did somebody here buy that motherboard? Damnit!! I was waiting for the guy to lower the price. Lol. Oh well, I'm using the Maxx today and it is not bad. All I'm missing is WiFi tether but my iPad is the 4G version so I can just pull the Sim out of this phone and stick it in there and use all the data I want. Also found out that Verizon doesn't block the tethering capability of the iPad so I can setup a WiFi hotspot easily for the laptop without having to jailbreak, even though my iPad is jail broken... Currently blocking ads using Adguard which doesn't require root. All is good!
So, what exactly do you ask Verizon for? They can't supply the unlock code, that's from the Motorola site.
This guy started this thread 5 days ago and hasn't been back since to answer any ? I hate that don't start a thread with a ludicrous claim then abandon it. That's bull**** why start it at all.

Thank you @bigv5150 , I totally agree with you and sure quite a few others do. There are a lot of people that depend on XDA for the newest info and break through. Yes some things don't end up being the "Holy Grail" or even usable solution, however there bits of that information end up inspiring some one to find that solution.
But this thread was like a 5 year old getting a huge beautifully wrapped box under the tree only to find out it was just a wrapped empty box, a gag gift. How cruel!
Agreed. This why I love XDA! Always looking for that next update is addicting, lol!
I agree the op is most likely a true troll & post is nonsense as well (but).
Has anyone tried out the OPs suggestion with Vzw?
My phone is still in the Edge plan.
My 4.4.4 Maxx is off contract, and I went through step one but of course being a non-dev version my "device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking".
But I'm with everyone else...what exactly do I ask Verizon tech support to do? How does one even hope to accurately dictate a 131 character code? Seems farfetched to think that Verizon has access to modify the Motorola databases...
Probably an idiot for going this far, don't want to look like a bigger idiot by calling Verizon. But damn, I'd love to unlock and root this thing.
I called to check with Verizon(Why not?), and according to level 2 tech support, they will not assist in bootloader unlocking or anything related to rooting. This is true even though my phone is entirely off contract(no edge either). So while there is a chance that asking the right way might have them help you, I highly doubt it. I got some sort of lecture about the fact that they are a reseller of phones, and that this would somehow kill their deals with phone manufacturers.

That's funny because they are the ones forcing the manufacturers to lock the bootloader.
The truth is, that they make money from bloatware developers, and do not want to allow the ability to uninstall those apps. If they did, it would devalue the cost they charge for bloatware.

My bootloader unlocking journey

Hey, I got a new phone for Christmas, a Huawei P20 !
I'm very happy because my last phone was a moto G and I kept it about 6 years, it looked quite bad after all this time xd.
However I'm a big fan of tweaks and hacks, and the first thing I though after getting my Huawei was to root it.
So I went on internet, hoping I would not brick my phone like the first time I tried on my moto G :fingers-crossed:... But I just saw that Huawei had stopped providing bootloader unlock codes.
I desesperately tried everything I saw to get this damn code, but I can't get it.
Some people talk about creating Huawei IDs with Honk Kong as location, but they actually don't ask your location on the sign up page so idk how to make it. Some people talk about programs where you can pay to get the code, but It is just ridiculous and I'm never gonna pay for something I should have free, and which seems to me to be a right.
I sent 2 mails to Huawei support as recommended in the sites I visited, but the only poor answer they gave me after a week was "the service has been stopped, we can no longer give you your code". I'm very deceived because root is a must for me on a phone.
Do you know anything that could help me? Is there any trick you know to get the code and that works, or did you understand the Honk Kong trick ? Thanks
it is really disgusting, it is the worst movement that huawei could do. I am in the same situation, the only thing you can do is to pay 30 eurs to a company.. that surely gets the codes from huawei and then unlock yhe bootloader! I called them, I emailed them and it was a total waste of my time. Moreover I have a **** Rom which is from Movistar provider. We are ****ed mate.

There are cheaper sellers online at only 19us$.
Check Global-unlocking-solutions.
That won't help OP who only want a totally free unlock method and won't buy from third-party party seller, as he thinks, as many, that is should be free of any charge.
It's not a nice move for huawei to did so...
But 20 bucks are not so much for a 400 bucks device, so if you want it rooted....

Exactly in the same boat as you, got the p20 for Christmas, after having a LG g3 for 4 years. Then I discovered it can't be rooted because they don't want to unlock bootloaders anymore...
This is a shame, I'm gonna go to a Huawei store near home and try to make them spit out my code lol. I'll also look for anything that could help to find the code ourselves. BTW, do you know who exactly seels codes? Are they companies or just hackers? If they are hackers, we are too so we could do that ourselves ahah
Just pony up €20, you cheap bastard!
