UnBricking the One S - HTC One S

Hey guys, so yea, my friend, who's father flashed a HTC One rom on to the One S, got the phone brick. Cannot be charged, cannot be switched on, although previously, it can get access to TWRP and suddenly it just went to stone now... Any solutionS?

I am not very deep into this stuff, but had the same issue today. Luckely I was able to enter the bootloader by pressing Vol- and Power on at the same time. Maybe this will help - I hope so. Failing that, just wait a little longer, this community is always here to help and very clever!
Best wishes

You should go to the bootloader (as mentioned above) and relock it, And then install the proper RUU from here:
ht tp ://w ww. androidruu. com/?developer=Ville (S4 version, bootloader says VLE)
ht tp ://w ww. androidruu. com/?developer=VilleC2 (S3 version, bootloader says VILLEC2)
(remove spaces from the link)

So, my friend told me the phone could be charged. And so does that mean, he can go to the bootloader and ressurect it?

Yes

I guys, just to be sure if all these steps are correct.
1. See if the phone can got to Bootloader
2. Plug in the phone to the computer
3. Download the compatible RUU
4. Relock it.
But idk how to do the fourth step. I'm using Ubuntu so drivers aren't rly required. And i heard there's 2 types of One S. The C2, no how to check whether i have either the C2 or the standard One S?
Really really appreciate if you can answer all this

1- To lock your phone you should enter bootloader, select fastboot, then connect the device to a computer. Now you should see "fastboot usb" white text on red background. Open a terminal and type
Code:
sudo fastboot oem lock
That's all(I assume you know what to do next)
2- if you could enter bootloader and see VLE after TAMPERED and UNLOCKED tags it's s4 variant and if you see VILLEC2, it's s3(c2) variant
Sent from my HTC One S

Doesn't do show anything on the display.

OKay guys so i got my hands on the Bricked One S.. First things first, when i got it, i think some mad guys at the repair shop removed the screws on the One S and taking the top cap off kinda bend the Blue plate or whatever. Anyways, when i plugged the device to charge, theres the LED Notification lit up, then about 2 secs, it doesn't anymore. So while charging, i tried going to the bootloader, Power Button + Vol Down same time. Then suddenly, the One S's screen had a white flash on a certain part of the screen either top or bottom then it disappeared somewhat like lightining. After that flash assuming its going to turn on, i let go of the Power Button but the Vol Down. The LED Notification light was lit too but like the situtation when charging, it went off. So i can't go to Bootloader or Fastboot, but is there any way possible to ressurect this phone? Or maybe the screws were affecting the Main PCB or smth? HELP PLS. Counting on you guys

Yeah guys this is a problem of death batt or empty one. Let it to charge for a few hours and then try again, if still the issue persist then (even is littlebit difficult) try to test it with a good batt. If it goes to bootloader consider replacing with a new batt.

Yup. I'm having the same issue here. And it wierd because if you try charging to the wall charger for a day the LED will have the orange light and this time if you were to try the button combination the white flash that we use to see initially stops happening. An one the orange light dissapear the button combination will start back. But the phone is still bricked or Dead.
How can we make the phone respond to the computer or even get any response itself?
Without having responding is there any way to fix this?

Sadly, i sort of sent my One S to a repair shop cos of that problem. Im getting it back soon cos another guy told me to adb reboot-bootloader. Now the saddiest thing is that my computer is running Linux with adb but it doesnt detect any device i plugged.

HTC One S shuts down and won't turn on, no charging led.

Hi,
yesterday I pulled my One S out of my pocket, opened up the browser, made a search on google and all of a sudden, while the page was loading the screen turned off, completely black. The capacitive buttons stayed awake for 4-5 seconds, then they turned off too.
Completely dead, the phone won't turn on anymore, not even in recovery mode. If I connect the wall charger the charging led doesn't light up, although I can feel the phone is heating (as usually happens when charging).
I've tried connecting it to the pc via usb and windows after a while, detects a peripheral named "qhsusb_dload". I've read on google that this isn't any good... Anyway, even connected to the pc (for hours) the charging led doesn't light up.
No signs of life from my One S... :crying:
The phone is completely stock, unrooted.
Do someone have any hints?
Thanks.
I believe you're in download mode.
Hold the power button until your button leds start flashing and then keep holding it until they stop again. Now let go. If they don't start flashing within (say) 20 seconds, you can also let go. Hold the vol-down button and press&release the power button. Hopefully this boots you into bootloader mode. If not I don't nkow what else to suggest other than look at the unbricking thread in the development forum.
There's no way I can enter bootloader. The phone shows no signs of life (no capacitive buttons, no charging led, nothing at all)...
One thing that maybe is important: for about a month, I've been experiencing a strange battery drain. The drain used to occur even if the phone was in deep sleep (I'm sure about this because I've checked with cpuspy and anyway I hadn't installed any new apps for quite a while), at a rate of 7-8% each hour. I could leave the phone on the desk with screen off and in standby (no 3g data, no wifi, not even cellular network) and the drain was still there.
By the way, when my phone died I had plenty of battery left, about 70%.

If it's unrooted then your warranty is still 100% intact and HTC will replace your phone no problem. What you describe just happens sometimes, more so with this phone then others I've seen.
The qhsusb_dload means it's not worth tinkering with yourself if you can just submit it for warranty.

I see, thanks. Is this qhsusb-dload issue hardware-related? If so, is it possible that they swap my S4 chip with an S3?

Think of qhsusb-dload kinda like your normal PC without windows. Your phone could not find an operating system to boot into and defaulted to qhsusb-dload mode waiting for a command. Our problem is that we don't really know the commands for qhsusb-dload nor do we have the files needed to use it only the manufactures do.
They can't swap a s4 chip for a S3 version that isn't the same product.
Most likely it the micro USB charging port that's gone toast.. happened to mine exact same symptoms. I was actually unlocked, HTC dev unlocked too, running a custom ROM as well as custom recovery and splash screen. I still sent it in repair with hope of they will never be able to turn the damn thing on to discover my deeds and will replace my phone but they didn't mind, they reflashed stock rom after repair and sent it back but I was still s-off
Send it into repair mate. Best option instead of tinkering with it lol

I'll have to send the phone in.
Crazy idea but that sounds like the mode you go into for the downgrade so maybe the last part of it might help to get you up and running again.

No that for flashing Hboot think you want step 12 but will need to edit the file the download has but you will need to do step 3 so you can do step 12. I have no idea if it will work but its an idea and also might be best to ask about it there too before doing anything.

G has locked bootloader. It is difficult to brick it. I wouldnt give up. Still possible that battery is dead. I cant check myself but I would check if it's possible to measure voltage on battery. Anyway, you can still disassembly the phone good luck!

The device turned on, thanks.
But I'm facing other problem :/
I did the flash-blank to restore bootloader, ok, but it says 'Device is LOCKED' even after flashing motoboot.img
So I can't flash boot.img, recovery.img or system.img
Tried to unlock bootloader again, but is give me: "fastboot oem unlock disabled!"
It's weird because when I type 'fastboot oem get_unlock_data' he gives me other key than the first time I've unlocked it
My new questions is:
There's a way to force this bootloader to be unlocked?
Or how can I flash stock firmware with locked bootloader? (tried many firmwares, fastboot always says 'Perflash validation failed' for boot.img and 'Invalid signed image' for system.img and the devices says 'hab check failed for boot' | 'Invalid PIV signed system image'.
Can anyone save me from this hell?
UPDATE: After searching and reading so much in the web, i figured out that i wiped cid partition (yeah, i'm a douchebag) so i give up of try to fix my moto g and bought a new phone

Hi,
I have the exact same problem.
I cannot get into recovery. I tried Power + Vol. Up but that did not work (yet).
Did you leave it plugged into the wall charger while doing this, Braddison?
Also it does not show up on PC.

If I remember correctly I had it on charge and held down power and vol up. It did take a couple of minutes continuously holding down the buttons. Been fine ever since
If that fails try power and volume down for about 30seconds, I'm sure that's meant to hard reset phone
Thanks for your quick answer. I will try once more.
Same dead HTC One Mini here...two days ago the phone suddenly turned off (with somewhat of 80%-90% battery) and since then its dead. No LED, no charging, it even doesnt get warm when its being plugged into the charger. Pressed Power+Volume down (plugged or non-plugged) more than 2 minutes, and also Power+Volume Up more than two minutes.
adb shows no device. If i plug the phone into an USB-slot in a linux-machine dmesg doesnt says anything. So its dead or not? Since its not more than a half year old it should have warranty, but i think i wont get my photos and stuff. So this is an advioce to myself: never ever buy a phone without micro-sd-slot again!!!
cheers, jennix

I would try again after putting on charge for a few hours, ensuring that power and volume down are pressed simultaneously. i have read that its best to do this while in a bright room or shining a torch on the sensor, seems strange i know but its worth a try

the problem was: a damaged mainboard, which got replaced - took about two weeks..

thanks! Just sent mine to HTC, hope they fix it within warranty. Can I ask if ur data on the internal SD is stil intact or did you lose it all? And again someone with cm11 installed. Anyone with Sense had the same problem?
I have the exactly same problem, my phone was rooted with CM11 nightly when it died. I sent it to my carrier, but now they want me to pay 200$ for a new motherboard, because they found it was rooted and the warranty is voided. Even when I pay 200$, i still will have no warranty. And I had more than 1 year left. Is there a problem with CM11? How comes that they replace it for some people for free, and for some not? Please, give me a tip how to proceed and do I really have any options from this point?
These horror stories make me wanna stick to stock based roms. I'm a big fan of CM, but not if there's a chance it could fudge my mainboard.. real shame
or is this another example of another design fault with this phone?....
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Xparent Green Tapatalk 2
As they have to replace the motherboard it is an hardware issue, where I live rooting doesnt void warranty if there is an hardware issue. They have to give you warranty. Could you ask your carrier what exactly caused it and why the motherboard had to be replaced?

I have the exactly same problem, my phone was rooted with CM11 nightly when it died. I sent it to my carrier, but now they want me to pay 200$ for a new motherboard, because they found it was rooted and the warranty is voided. Even when I pay 200$, i still will have no warranty. And I had more than 1 year left. Is there a problem with CM11? How comes that they replace it for some people for free, and for some not? Please, give me a tip how to proceed and do I really have any options from this point?

Hey. I sent it directly to AVARTO (service center here in Germany) they too wanted to charge me (around $ 240). Then I asked what exactly the problem was and they revised their statement. Sent it back for free within warranty. On the repair sheet it than said "not turning on. constantly".
Hi.
Another dead mini. S-OFF, TWRP, CM11.

My phone just die and it is not responding.

Today my phone was working fine and it was working fine all the time. I have 4.4.4 Android unlocked and not rooted (it was rooted, but when i updated to 4.4.4 the root was gone and i didnt put it on). It was in my pocket and when i got home i wanted to start the sceen and it dosent react to anything. I tryed charging it (thinking the battery died, not nothing on the screen), try pushing all the buttons (3 buttons in the same time) nothing again. it is so strange!? what i can do? i have connected to my computer, but the com is not detecting it. and the screen dont react at all. this is so strange!?!?!?

So You've done nothing?
Okay, well first i recommend doing the "obvious".
1) Hold Down the Power Button
else
2)Load device manager on your PC and connect your Phone, anything coming up?
else
3)leave it in the charger overnight.
Also if the battery is dead, it won't show anything on screen, it'll be black only.
then when it has enough power it'll show a red light at the bottom.
Push and good the power button for 20 seconds. See if after it'll boot

Maybe try giving it a while on the chargee then toggle with the power button. I had a Lenovo tab once that did the same thing, it just suddenly died and I tried doing everything I could to revive it. So I just gave up and left it on the charger for a long time then gave it one last hold of the power button and presto! It was alive.

If you can't turn on the phone, even they wouldn't be able to. I guess you still have a shot at warranty. :fingers-crossed:
i am having the same problem, but when i connect my phone to the computer it's trying to instal the qhsusb_bulk driver, from my reasarch it's a hard brik... same i cand use my warranty because the phone glass it's cracked so the only solution is a jtag but i dont't know if it's posibile for the NEXUS 5. I went to a service and the say it's because of dead software. All i want to know is if it's posibile to resurect it with JTAG.
Same thing happened to my n5 32gb last Thursday. I sent it already to Google. It is unlocked but like new condition visually.
I'm really disappointed because my old 4year old HTC working.

You need the proper equipment for it and I haven't seen anybody here resurrecting their devices using jtag.

Hardware failures can occur on any device. My HTC One X died within 2 months of usage. That's why the manufacturer provides warranty to take care of it under such circumstances.

It's any chance to resurect it? Do you know a method?

You can try to access the secondary bootloader and see if you can fix it from there. Follow the last thread which I've linked in my signature and from the its OP follow the bsod thread.
If that doesn't help, the device is a goner.

if you can boot into download mode (Hold down volume_up key then connect USB cable). give this a try:

You need to use the volume buttons to select recovery option in bootloader and then press the power button to get there.. If the buttons are stuck or do not work, I'm not sure what you could do now other than rma.
Sorry but your solution is RMA only.

I manage to fix my phone. i was charging it for 1 hour and with the cable on (charging) i start to press all the buttons (for recovery mode) and nothing happen and then disconnect it from this charger and i connect it to other charger and magically when i plug the cable the phone display show that it is charging (and before that it was not showing this) and then i just turn it on. so just try a coupple of times with different situation.
Tried every combination with different chargers and sadly without success. It already on it's way to Google

blocked on black screen

Hello,
Ive tried to look for a similar situation in other thread but each case is different so i open a new one.
This morning, when i took my idol 3 the screen did not switch off when pressing power button. I thought it was battery but when i plugged charger, nothing happened except the led is on continuously. I kept power button pressed for 10 seconds. The phone vibrates shortly but still a black screen, no sound and no reaction from the touch panel. Power+vol+ did not led me to my twrp recovery. What can i do now to get it work again? The phone is rooted with Rom Eu 4.2 from murigny64 and it is the first time i encounter this issu. Thanks in advance for helping me
Tonight i disconnected the battery for about 30min then connect it again. Then i tried to start in recovery: Just a vibration but no display and no sound. I unplugged/plugged the battery again and try to start. Same problem. What the hell could happen? Maybe a deffective hardware
Insist on boot ( normal or in to recovery with vol + and power).
That is a hardware brick.
Happened to me to some times, insist, it will unbrick

I charged the phone all the night but nothing better and the phone is not detected on pc so no adb action possible.
Maybe the battery is dead...

Can be, can be to... To bad if is battery.
But still trying to boot, is very difficult to.
.
thank you for advise but it's still not working. I spend about 30 minutes trying different combination of button: power pressed until it vibrate, power+vol up, power+vol down, power+vol up & down, discontinuous press of power with charger and no charger....and so on. Its a complete failure.
If it is the battery, there was no sign of weakness before (short life, random shutoff, ....) . It happen suddenly: I lock my screen before sleeping and the next morning no way to switch it on again.
I thought I would avoid problems for long with a twrp recovery, a backup and adb tools on my pc.....but for hardware issues its useless.
How can I be sure it is battery before purchasing another one ?

If it was the screen the touch panel would work and i could sense vibration when typing the pin code no?
The led bright continuously when i plug instead of flashing slowly as it used to do when charging. That why i think its battery.
...and when i start in recovery the phone is not detected on my pc
That's hardware brick. Don't give up, try to boot, normally or in recovery, keep trying it will boot.
Have you tried to open the phone and disconnect battery? Custom ROMs made me similar issue a few times.

Therefore the back can be dismantle and we can access battery and that s what i did.
Yes i disconnected it for several hours and pluged it again but it gave me the same result. And now it doesnt vibrate anymore when i keep the power button pressed a while.
I purchased a battery on internet and im waiting for delivery to test if im right or not. Il feedback about the test.
Anyway its nice from you to look for any solution. Thanks

I guess you did everything properly, so just one thing: at first time when I did this, I choosed the wrong cable (which didn't 'reset' the phone), so I hope you pulled both out.

I think i choose the good connection: This is the one over the battery with 6 wires: 2 red, 2 white and 1 black (see picture attached). I just left it with a small screwdriver to disconnect.

Yep, that's it
Hello,
I received the new battery today.
So i unpacked it, i unplugged the old one and plugged the new one ...and guess what happened......the same bevahiour as with the old battery: when i press the button power, it vibrate but it doesnt start neither in recovery nor in normal mode.
I just precise that the new battery is charged at 50%........:crying:
So the problem is not the battery but it was the only thing i could test by myself before sending the phone to alcatel for repair.
Im still wondering what could happen to my idol 3: It had been woking perfectly for months and one morning with no warning, it refuse to switch on. Ok sorry for annoying us and hope it wont happen with yours.
I hope alacatel will apply the guarantee although the phone is rooted and bootloader unlocked....because its a hardware issue i think.
Hello,
Just to conclude. The phone got back from repair after 10 days. They have changed motherboard, battery and also the back that was damaged. Its a brand new phone .
