[Q] Phone won't mount via USB to computer any other ways to get media onto the phone? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Not sure why but ever since I went to 4.4.2 my phone no longer mounts via USB to my mac. I'd just like to be able to easily throw so music from my computer to my phone. I tried using dropbox and Es File Explorer but it's kind of wonky and doesn't always transfer well. Any ideas what I can do to fix the USB issue or other ways I could get files to my phone? Thanks

That could work but don't they have a file transfer limit of 100MB a month?

Have you tried the official Android File transfer application from google?

I mean that's what I was using before on my mac. But like I said, it doesn't even mount at all. The AFT app doesn't see a device. Charges fine though via USB.

Is USB debugging enabled? I've seen that cause troubles in the past on other android phones when mounting to Mac's.

I've tried it both on and off and still nothing.

There are several apps that can be used to transfer files via wifi.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop

I had this same problem. What worked was to uninstall the phone driver, download the correct drivers located in the general section, extract to desktop, reboot, disconnect from the internet, and reconnect phone.
edit: just saw you have a mac ooops

Double check your cable, AFT should work, redownload it and try w/ another cable.

I've tried multiple cables already. There's no notification on the phone that it's mounted as a usb mass storage and AFT doesn't see it either.

Unable to mount File System

I just flashed to Pinnacle 1.3( was on Fasty III before ) and I've noticed that with Gingerbread Roms, i just cant seem to be able to Mount the File system on my Windows 7 pc.
Using USB-Debugging mode, i connect my Capy to my pc and then mount the file system, but it doesnt show up in my PC
i also tried directly mounting it as Mass Storage, again not showing up!
Tried all USB Ports, Different Cable etc etc
Weird thing is, when i flash back to Stock using Odin 1 click, ie when im on JF6, I am able to Mount the File system!!!
Another Weird thing is, that i am able to Mount my phone ( with Pinnacle or Fasty) on my friends PC, by installing the same drivers that i have for my PC
whats Wrong? I have also uninstalled all drivers and re installed them, used driver cleaners etc
Never had that problem on win 7. Don't know what to tell you.
Are you using the correct drivers?
Yea!! i am...i really dont know whats the problem! and i dont wanna format the whole thing!
Im using the drivers mentioned in the Sticky Threads...ODIN 1 click thread to be precise

When you say you tried another cable, do you mean another SAMSUNG cable or something else? The problem you describe is very often attributable to the cable. The Samsung cable that came with my Cappy worked just fine with my old computer (PowerMac G5), but refused to work with my new iMac.
I tried also using a RocketFish micro USB cable, and had zero luck with that.
After much screwing around and swearing, I tried using my wife's MOTOROLA cable, and the computer recognized the phone with that.
I'm nothing close to an expert on electronics, but I suspect it has something to do with voltages on different computers.
I suggest trying to get your hands on a Motorola cable and seeing if that fixes it. Perhaps the Gingerbread ROMs have different voltage settings? Dunno...but try a Motorola cable.
hmmmm, i just tried a micro usb cable from a blackberry....ill try out the Motorola one....thanks for the suggestion

You may have another option, too...at least for transferring files. I've been using an app called WiFi File Explorer PRO for several weeks, and I love it. You can connect to the phone via WiFi (if you have it available) and transfer files back and forth just using a web browser on your computer.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.dooblou.WiFiFileExplorerPRO&feature=more_from_developer
Since I started using this app, I haven't needed to futz with a cable at all. It obviously won't help you with Odin, Heimdall, or any one-click utilities that require you to be connected via USB, but it will help you get files on your phone for flashing with CWM.
Not sure if it's an option for you, but it might help alleviate some of your issue.
Great Suggestion and seems very handy...thanks a lot!

[Q] ADB and fastboot work fine, but no mass storage?

Hey guys, how's it going? So I've got a really strange problem, my device is easily accessed and works with ADB and fastboot, but I absolutely can not for the life of me get MTP to work. Windows always installs Google Nexus ADB interface (instead of Nexus 5) even when USB debugging is disabled and MTP is enabled.
Any ideas what to do next?
Usb debugging needs to be enables after rooting and mtp enabked to transfer files. Same with my device. Not really sure of why. Make sure u have the correct driver installed also
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Mtp is not mass storage btw. There is no mass storage in nexus 5

Aye sorry, meant MTP.
Well, one of my PCs recognizes it properly in MTP, the other two PCs keep installing the phone as 'Google Nexus ADB Interface'. Both seem to work when I switch it to camera instead. Weird!
Edit: I managed to sort it out kind of, but Windows keeps erroring out on installing an MTP driver for my phone. It worked for my HTC One though...
Edit 2 Just did the cheat fresh install of Windows by ungrading and it sorted out whatever problem was going on with both PCs, so all is well. Thanks for the help though!

Use a different usb cable, drivers installed correctly?, rebooting the pc might help. Usb debugging enabled?
You are maybe trying to transfer a big file and a lot of files. A friend wasn't able to transfer his old HTC files (300) to his new N5 so he opted for a WiFi transfer.

Thanks a lot mate ! :good::fingers-crossed:
If you have a recovery installed, boot into recovery and mount storage. Then it will work flawlessly.
I had this issue as there were files which contained special characters like : ... Windows didn't like it and stopped copying.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Hello all,

USB Connection Issues

I just rooted my s8+ with partcyborg's samfail and everything is working great except the usb isn't being recognized. I can see my phone on my computer and I can move files to my desktop but on my phone I get this message - "The connected device is unable to access data on this device. Reconnect the USB cable and try again." I have USB debugging enabled in settings. I'm using windows 10. ADB is up to date. I installed the samsung USB drivers. The device isn't recognized in kies or smart switch.
I'm at a total loss here. Any ideas? Could this be related to the 80% battery bug I was seeing? It's been at 80% for a while now.
Apologies if this is an obvious fix. I haven't rooted a phone since kitkat I looked around but the other threads weren't helpful.

So what do you wanna do with your USB connection? Just MTP (e.g. transfer files like you would when connecting a USB-Stick to PC) or you wanna do some ADB operations?
If you just want to transfer files, there's no need to have USB-Debugging enabled (in fact this is kind of a security risk when you connect to an unknown pc)

Yeah I've been trying to use drivedroid but it says there are issues with the mass storage. I'm going to send the dev a message with the ROM and see if there's anything he can do. For now just gonna flash back to stock

Cannot access phone storage on PC.

My OnePlus 7 Pro acts as Read-Only when I plug it in.
I noticed there is a folder in the OnePlus 7 Pro that has a Driver executable which installs the necessary drivers and I run that fine.
But that doesnt do anything and I cannot access my phone storage at all, that OnePlus folder with the drivers is all that shows up every time.
Yes I change it to "File Transfer", yes Ive tried all USB ports and even different UCB cables and cords. Going into device manager it seems windows is being a clown and cant seem to understand the drivers. Ive attached some pictures to show what I get.
Im honestly lost at this point as to what to do. Please help.
What does my computer show? Isn't it right there called storage D? If not right click run as admin and reinstall drivers and restart, plug phone in and choose file transfer..it may or may not pop up right away that's why need look at my computer

Have you tired running both setups?

Yes. They both just install the drivers so not sure why there are two setups.
How about the tool all in one, install drivers option

Yea I tried that and I get that "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (code 31). I mentioned that in my initial post and have a picture of it.
Are you using a USB cable that supports data transfer? The original cable from OnePlus that came with your device as an example.

Yes I have the original and I bought a new one because I heard the original for some odd reason has issues with data transfer. It hasn't helped.

Have you tried the PTP option?
I've had several phones that, for whatever reason, the files couldn't be seen unless I used PTP instead of the File Transfer option.
