Hello all,
So I am trying to get used to my new N5. I do like the device but have a few questions that I am hoping this forum can help answer.
1) Sound on N5: this seems low, When I apply an EQ app it gets a bit lower. Is there anything to fix this? Have ppl seen the same result?
2) Remove Apps on N5: I have a rooted/unlocked bootloader N5. There are some apps that I don't use and want to remove. How do I do this properly?
3) Dialer Apps: are there dialer apps out there that completely replace the stock dialer but with better feature/functionality?
I think that is it for now. I am coming from a LG Optimus G Pro, so its taking some time to get used to the screen size difference. I didnt think this would be a big deal but its a bigger deal than I gave it credit for.
Thanks,
Steve

Use Rom Toolbox or Titanium Backup to freeze unwanted apps. Better than uninstalling because it helps to have all of the original apps present for updates and flashing.

1.) There is a zip that can slightly raise the volume of your nexus 5. And you can do a hardware mod to make it louder.
2.) Get titanium backup and just uninstall them.
3.) Yeah you can use any dialer just like as if you can use any SMS app. There is no "better" dialer. Just Google it and watch reviews and decide from there, that's for you to decide.

Does the hardware mod only change the loudness of the speaker or does it also apply when using a headset with the device?

The hardware mod is drilling holes in the speaker, so....
Try viper4android. I've seen people say that works

Hardware mods are mods you do with your bare hands and not zips and stuff. So no it will not increase Volume with headphones. If you don't want to get your hands dirty, there's a zip that will also increase the speaker loudness too. And you can do the suggestion above me ↑.
But kernels can raise the volume for headphones. I know that existed for the Galaxy Nexus

Anyone have experience with the Faux kernel, which is supposed to be targeted at increasing the loudness?
No I'm stock everything. Just rooted using gravity box

I have always had a lot of low end sound when in a call on my skyrocket (always as in before root) making it hard to hear someone who mumbles or has a lower voice.
w or w/o headphones still have problem. *moreso referring to speaker on phone though
I have tried a plethora of eq's but none seem to affect incoming call sound.
flashed beats audio (by fuss132) problem got worse.
is there any root level eq's or any way i can boost my mids and decrease lows on calls?
I would like to know too. My new A9220 is too trebly but an EQ might help.
Have you tried finding volume+ on google there's a forum that has a free app in it
CM9 Skyrocket
Thanks I have downloaded volume+, the paid version but I need root access and I've been unsuccessful in rooting so far. Any other product suggestions welcome. Volume+ say their speaker quality function is experimental and it doesn't seem like it gives the ability to EQ the incoming call but lets hope it helps or this phone is going back....

well, I've tried superoneclick, unlock root, gingerbreak and loading from SD, none of them get through the process. I have USB debugging on etc...I don't know what I'm doing wrong, I wondered if I don't have the right file for the SD method. This is my first Android phone.
Use Odin

Ok, got it rooted. Now I need to make the speaker usable for calls. Volume+ doesn't seemt o EQ the speaker, just allow me to increase the volume. Any other suggested apps or tweaks?

found engineers menu (via dialpad) with audio adjustment so that might help. Will run through the options provided.
Guys, loving the N5 but HATE the speaker, i have run custom roms, tweaks but frankly - my opinion, dire !
Has anyone though about a replacement, better alternative ?
As gonna dive in and possibly take a look ?
Thanks
When have you EVER heard of replacing a proprietary speaker in a cell phone with an "alternative" or "upgraded" speaker? Let alone there even being one available?

This post is no different than the other 50 post complaining about the speaker in various ways. There are zip files to flash, kernels with sound management, and so on. I don't think anyone has attempted to replace the speaker, although they have stuck a hot needle into the holes to make them bigger Some guy has attempted to put the g2 battery into his nexus. You can be that guy attempting to put a new speaker in his nexus 5.
Good luck

Your obviously NOT an engineer and i would also guess, have not alot of foresight either, it's called lateral thinking, out of the box.
Kind regards
(I was just asking!)
Dam bruh might as well add a subwoofer and a amp and stereo speakers man.
Anyways try viper4android

Yes, obviously I'm not an engineer; I'm just going by the years of experience with phones and NEVER seeing a "upgraded replacement" speaker available for a phone...ever. :good:
Couldn't you just plug in whatever external speaker system you desire? Coupled with V4A you'd have a nice music setup.
Just don't use the top 3 volume levels when using a 3.5mm accessory as it has serious cross talk issues.

Just wondering but since I got my N5 and GF got Moto X on Monday, I can really tell the difference in speaker quality between the two and I use my phone to play music quite a bit. Has anyone just replaced the speaker in the phone? Is it even possible to purchase the tiny phone speakers separately?

OK, so you point me to an old thread that has no real information besides a few people saying they haven't tried it. Thanks.:good:
Your best bet is a pair of external speakers IMO. Otherwise software mods can push the built-in a bit further.

I was afraid of that. After watching a few teardown videos, it doesn't look like just any other cell phone speaker would fit. Seems like a proprietary setup.

If your willing to root your phone then install Viper4Android. No need for any other change. Check out the dedicated N5 and Viper4Android thread in this forums themes and apps section. The difference will be stunning for speakers, earplugs and bluetooth.

So I have a Moto G Google Play Edition, and I've noticed that my Media volume is very low. Anyone have any ideas?
Is Sound Effects app properly configured? Have you uninstalled it?
And your G is an original GPE or have you converted it to GPE?
Ive not tested this on GPE firmware but you can give it a go. If there is such a file (mixer_path), and there are the said lines, then try to change it. As usual, perform a nandroid backup in case anything goes wrong. Use this method ONLY if the said files and lines are present okay? I can safely say that it works on CM based roms.

I am well aware of this. If I increase this, the sound will distort. So I don't wish to use this method.

To be honest, Ive tested this on crappy AND good headphones I didnt notice any distortion (i dont have audiomods, i dont increase bass or anything nor have i experienced distrortion on high frequencies) so I'm a bit dumbfounded. Different roms have different ways of managing audio, i guess. I really want people to focus on this issue too. Ive been looking here and there for a solution to be honest. I hope you'll find a solution and share it here

I wish someone here in the XDA developers make a custom kernel for this so it won't distort.

There are kernels for GPE that have fauxsound implemented (supposedly its very good at inxreasing volume) but the problem is you have to pay to be able to use the feature using a paid app. I had problems with it where the volume boost wouldnt stick after a reboot, but im not in anyway from stopping you to try it out. You may get different results. Try looking around our moto g forum (for kernels that have fauxsound)

I downloaded this and did a backup. Then I flashed it. Everything was fine. I downloaded fauxsound app. Everything was working until I did a reboot to delete my backup. Sure enough, the phone was bricked AFTER I deleted my backup. I turn on my phone, in the google logo. Everything becomes purple and the screen goes black. I cleared cache and dalvik to see if that works but it didn't so I had to do a factory reset. Thanks so much!

Yo.
I need an answer on this. Can this phone go loud on headphones? Opinions are very mixed... How is it compared to Moto G?
I heard there are newer versions of N5, did they change something with volume or not? Maybe Android updates does something to it?
Pls notice that I'm talking about headphone out, not speakers.
Mine goes very loud. I also use viper4android though.
There is only one version of the n5

Not running stock but it's plenty loud. There's a mod and an app to let you change the mixer_paths. The DAC still isn't the greatest but at least you can turn up the volume.

Could you please tell me what this app is called?
So I can basically install it, change some numbers in mixer_paths and get higher than stock volume WITHOUT DISTORTION? That would be great!
Here you go
Loud enough to blow my ears out on max volume lol. It depends on your headphones too anyways.

In what unit of measure? Decibels? The output partially depends on your headphones and rigging up a decibel meter isn't exactly going to yield great results. Also, if I answered in decibels, I don't think you'd be we to process the information usefully.
..and that is why trollop was funny. You asked an unanswerable question. 11 is as valid as anything else because there is no unit of measure that answers the question that you could possibly understand.
