Guys, loving the N5 but HATE the speaker, i have run custom roms, tweaks but frankly - my opinion, dire !
Has anyone though about a replacement, better alternative ?
As gonna dive in and possibly take a look ?
Thanks
When have you EVER heard of replacing a proprietary speaker in a cell phone with an "alternative" or "upgraded" speaker? Let alone there even being one available?

This post is no different than the other 50 post complaining about the speaker in various ways. There are zip files to flash, kernels with sound management, and so on. I don't think anyone has attempted to replace the speaker, although they have stuck a hot needle into the holes to make them bigger Some guy has attempted to put the g2 battery into his nexus. You can be that guy attempting to put a new speaker in his nexus 5.
Good luck

Your obviously NOT an engineer and i would also guess, have not alot of foresight either, it's called lateral thinking, out of the box.
Kind regards
(I was just asking!)
Dam bruh might as well add a subwoofer and a amp and stereo speakers man.
Anyways try viper4android

Yes, obviously I'm not an engineer; I'm just going by the years of experience with phones and NEVER seeing a "upgraded replacement" speaker available for a phone...ever. :good:
Couldn't you just plug in whatever external speaker system you desire? Coupled with V4A you'd have a nice music setup.
Just don't use the top 3 volume levels when using a 3.5mm accessory as it has serious cross talk issues.

awesome, thanks
toasts doesn't have write access to /system?
little more on this is that it may take a kernel rewrite to get it going. Thats the only way they got it working on the Nexus and it seems our files are similar to theirs. So once we get source I'll defly be looking into that!
Really? The EVO's ring isnt loud enough for you? I was very satisfied.
Really..
Frankly for me the volume has sucked in every HTC phone I have used IMHO. I mean its not horrible or unusable for me or anything..I would like what the max is now to be about the middle..My notifications mostly is what I would like louder.
The speaker phone isnt that great either but ive used HTC phones long enough to be used to it.
Bump. I would really appreciate more info on this, the alarm tones are not loud enough to wake me up. Thanks.

No ROM has write access to /system from within Android. Currently, the only way to do that is through toast's custom recovery.

I've found the audio quality to suck on the EVO... there is a big difference in audio quality between the EVO and the iPhone... it just sounds flat to me. And even with the volumne all the way up it was barely loud enough to hear over a lawn mower.

I have full root (Yay Toast!!) now so I tried volume hack 3.6. I backed up my stock files first and then tried the 3.6 + everything mode, but it doesn't seem to work...unless the difference is not that dramatic. I also tried the 3.3 files, but same thing.
Anyway, the app indicates it doesn't work on the Nexus and several others so maybe the Evo is included in that. Give a try and let me know if it works for you.
Crap I hope someone works this out. The fm app is really low when on speaker

For anyone with a Senation already.
If anyone could be bothered...
Just wondering if a Headphone Controller app will work with the Sensation..??
I really want to get the iPhone version of the Sennheiser Headphones (PMX 680i Sports) which has the 4 ring controller along with Vol/Next Trk/etc and was wondering if this app works on the Sensation to allow that type of control.
(I think the HTC supplied phones have controls, but want better sound)
Really would like to know before diving in to the device. It would be great know if anyone has the knowledge or wants to try it out....
Cheers to all.
unfortuantly i do not have a wired headset with any button controls to test foe you. But i do use a couple of bluetooth headsets and the AVRCP is fully supported.
Not exactly what your after but may be of some interest to you
I have old Koss wired phones w/ controler i used with ipod and it doesnt work ... as for sennheiser, the bundled hs which came with my previous phone the HTC HD mini was from sennheiser so maybe even that one comming with sensation is

As of this moment, I can only confirm that the Play/Pause button on headphones designed for iPhone works normally on the Sensation without having to use Christoph Kober's Headset Button Controller app (which is really, really awesome in case anyone is wondering).
This is in contrast to, for example, the Nexus S I had before which would not properly recognize any button inputs at all. I had to use the controller app to get music working on that phone.
I'll reinstall the Headset Button Controller app and test it out with my girlfriend's iPhone earbuds tonight, and I'll get back to you once I confirm whether or not it reads the Volume Up and/or Volume Down buttons. I have the sneaking feeling that it won't, but hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised :]
Thx sosquidtaste
I really appreciate your effort.
There are a ton of really good headphones out there sold as iPhone capable with controllers that woud be great to be able to use them (working) on the Sensation. I can understand why they are marketed to the iphone folks, but it seems they miss a big chunk of the market by not working with other devices..
(I like the Sennheisers because they go around the back of your neck as one unit - not a big fan of bud style)
So, here's hoping!
Cheers

Bugger...!
Appreciate the effort. I wonder why this is such an 'out there' thing? To me at least, it would seem logical for the OS to support something so, well, basic as headphone control. Wonder why there has been no 'universal format' for this type of thing.
....sigh.

Glad to help-- I was pretty curious about this too, given just how well the center button behaved even without the headset controller app. I just wish it turned up more encouraging results.
Competing platforms are great for the most part, except when small but important features get shot up in the crossfire ;(

Just curious, can this be changed when this bugger gets Rooted or S-Off or whatever the heck is done with the locks come off this thing..?

As I understand it, the control issue is related to specific hardware configurations in the headphone port of our phones so not even the most righteous of hacks will enable them to read input that they aren't wired to receive ;(
I'm no engineer though, so I'd be happy to be contradicted by someone in the know

Hi everyone,
I did the speaker mod to my nexus 5 (hardware mod) but to be honest i'm not satisfied about the quality of the audio.
I saw a video on youtube, this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLbXtMKnXys&noredirect=1 and he says that a new module sounds better that even the modded one.
Does anyone has tried it?
Thanks

HardWare mod didn´t work for me. 4.4.1 improves volume substantialy but not quality.
Waiting for a new speaker already ordered in eBay. Seller told me that batch >1024 sounds better than my 0906. In few days I can tell for sure.
On an italian blog, as a comment in the news regarding differents dimensions speakers holes ( http://www.tuttoandroid.net/news/nexus-5-novita-hardware-161927/ ), an user posted this:
Well, since when He treated the larger holes , the difference in sound would not have been so varied between the two versions. But the problem is that the form was also changed internal speaker , I have both versions forward since the first one I bought at launch had the problem of the display to yellow and then to me this morning are to be replaced and I own the copyright got the new in which are present the larger holes such as in the article. Taken from the curiosity to understand why in the audio playback is a huge difference between the two and not believing that the improvement was due to the larger holes , I removed the battery cover and surprise ! ! The speaker module is not equal , has been replaced with a different one. My advice to all those who received less than 30 days from the phone : fatevelo replace contacting customer service google , because you have 30 days to get refund or replace your phone. So now the old revision have withdrawn and will come to you the new one.

What I ordered is output Rev 11, instead what I got as a replacement is Rev 12. Please contact support and tell them that google finds the low audio problem that they already know, or that you have your phone with the display to yellow, you replace it with no problems if you are still within 30 days of receipt of the phone.

Where can I read the batch number?
rev 12 exist?
I don't know... currently there aren't pics of fastboot screens that testify the existence of a Rev.12 version, no there on XDA and seems not in other parts of the world...
But the first zip file of OTA 4.4.1 was received from a guy in Italy that posted here the URL... the first Nexus 5 with bigger speaker holes was received from another guy here in Italy (that says it's still Rev.11, and audio is almost identical to his another Nexus 5 with smaller speakers holes)... you see that also the first Rev.12 Nexus 5 has been shipped to Italy lol
I'm going to investigate :fingers-crossed:
Thanks for letting us know a new module is available. I almost bought an older one.
Just picked up one from ebay for $14 shipped: HH_SKU_2_1113 (the one in the video is HH_SKU_2_1024)
Just wondering but since I got my N5 and GF got Moto X on Monday, I can really tell the difference in speaker quality between the two and I use my phone to play music quite a bit. Has anyone just replaced the speaker in the phone? Is it even possible to purchase the tiny phone speakers separately?

Your best bet is a pair of external speakers IMO. Otherwise software mods can push the built-in a bit further.

I was afraid of that. After watching a few teardown videos, it doesn't look like just any other cell phone speaker would fit. Seems like a proprietary setup.

If your willing to root your phone then install Viper4Android. No need for any other change. Check out the dedicated N5 and Viper4Android thread in this forums themes and apps section. The difference will be stunning for speakers, earplugs and bluetooth.

Hi ! I am using a Google Pixel 1 and I must say that I am really happy with my phone performance. But recently, I am having microphone problem people can hear me on Facebook Messenger or whatsapp calls but while doing direct call via Network Variant they can't hear me properly So I was thinking if there any root app to cancel the noise cancellation mic.
Now my question is will it be a wise thing to root pixel with Magisk?
I don't specifically know if any root app that would help your case... My suggestion is to take some rubbing alcohol and a needle and gently trying to clean the mic holes... There might just be lobby stuck in it
I am thinking about rooting myself,as we won't get anymore updates, any idea where is a good rom to start with, I really can afford to upgrade right now

Hi5 Mate! Even I am also looking for a good rom but there is so many so just confused! Do you havr any idea if we install a custom rom will google stop the support of unlimited photo storage? Google pixel1 is a solid I think it can sustain 4 more updates!
While it's totally feasible and reasonable to root your phone with Magisk (which I have happily done), it's probably not going to fix your microphone problem.
It's a well known hardware bug and I really hope you're not affected.

I had this issue on my Pixel 1 XL recently, but people would only be able to hear me if I was on speakerphone. I had to completely replace the daughterboard (board with charging port on it), and since then it's been working flawlessly. From the research I did it seemed like mics dying on Pixel 1's isn't uncommon.
I recently rooted with Magisk and so far I love it! BUt if you are only wanting to to fix your mic, idk if that would help.
