How loud can it go on headphones? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yo.
I need an answer on this. Can this phone go loud on headphones? Opinions are very mixed... How is it compared to Moto G?
I heard there are newer versions of N5, did they change something with volume or not? Maybe Android updates does something to it?
Pls notice that I'm talking about headphone out, not speakers.

Mine goes very loud. I also use viper4android though.
There is only one version of the n5

could someone say how it is without v4a, just stock phone?

Not running stock but it's plenty loud. There's a mod and an app to let you change the mixer_paths. The DAC still isn't the greatest but at least you can turn up the volume.

Could you please tell me what this app is called?
So I can basically install it, change some numbers in mixer_paths and get higher than stock volume WITHOUT DISTORTION? That would be great!

Here you go

Loud enough to blow my ears out on max volume lol. It depends on your headphones too anyways.

In what unit of measure? Decibels? The output partially depends on your headphones and rigging up a decibel meter isn't exactly going to yield great results. Also, if I answered in decibels, I don't think you'd be we to process the information usefully.
..and that is why trollop was funny. You asked an unanswerable question. 11 is as valid as anything else because there is no unit of measure that answers the question that you could possibly understand.

I used it on my hero and loved it, have not installed it to my evo. The app writes to /system, something that is impossible to do at the moment. So we have to wait this one out.

awesome, thanks
toasts doesn't have write access to /system?
little more on this is that it may take a kernel rewrite to get it going. Thats the only way they got it working on the Nexus and it seems our files are similar to theirs. So once we get source I'll defly be looking into that!
Really? The EVO's ring isnt loud enough for you? I was very satisfied.
Really..
Frankly for me the volume has sucked in every HTC phone I have used IMHO. I mean its not horrible or unusable for me or anything..I would like what the max is now to be about the middle..My notifications mostly is what I would like louder.
The speaker phone isnt that great either but ive used HTC phones long enough to be used to it.
Bump. I would really appreciate more info on this, the alarm tones are not loud enough to wake me up. Thanks.

No ROM has write access to /system from within Android. Currently, the only way to do that is through toast's custom recovery.

I've found the audio quality to suck on the EVO... there is a big difference in audio quality between the EVO and the iPhone... it just sounds flat to me. And even with the volumne all the way up it was barely loud enough to hear over a lawn mower.

try buying some comply eartips for your ear buds they really improve the sound and provide excellent noise canceling.... i use them for my monster turbines
Full write access is now available so when I get to a PC this will be one of the first things I try.

I have full root (Yay Toast!!) now so I tried volume hack 3.6. I backed up my stock files first and then tried the 3.6 + everything mode, but it doesn't seem to work...unless the difference is not that dramatic. I also tried the 3.3 files, but same thing.
Anyway, the app indicates it doesn't work on the Nexus and several others so maybe the Evo is included in that. Give a try and let me know if it works for you.
Crap I hope someone works this out. The fm app is really low when on speaker
Retracted.... Headphones didn't work either. Bummer.
Um...wow, this worked awesome for the headphones! Three bars up from mute is about the same as stock at max.

Hissing when audio starts

So not sure what's up, using that icecream fake rom and OC kernel, and I hear audio hissing most noticible through headphones when there is a noise, there is a hissing going on. It stops after audio stops though, not sure what's up.
I don't know if my rom and kernel are related to this, may have been here before? Anyone else notice this?
Try putting different rom and see the issue is still there cauz I been running ice cream rom with faux123's kernel and never had single problem like this.

Just tried this and still the same problem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426590
Guess my phone is broken?
Also tried returning the ICS one to stock same problem. Also tried it on my hd595 headphones, same problem.
I should mention it does it on the speakers as well, but it's much less noticible.
Do factory reset and if its still bad than you have bad hardware.

By factory reset do you mean like unroot and all?
Well try out stock rom first and if you still have problem than i am pretty sure its ur phone but going stock won't hurt because you would be returning them any way.

It's not your ROM its he audio chip in the phone. There is a thread in skyrocket general where we have been discussing it.
Only workaround is bluetooth or higher quality headphones kinda mask it.

So what exactly did you guys do for workaround?

Wait so all phones do this? But I mean it's so loud... well there is a tiny scratch on it too, might as well replace it anyway.
I can't use bluetooth headphones though because I have an icontrolpad and I don't think it can connect to multiple audio devices. Oh well, I don't use it for heavy music stuff, but I mean it's just really loud that hissing.

Nothing, you either ignore it or go bluetooth

Yup, just some of us notice it and others don't. I forget about it unless I try to hear for it. If it's extremely loud I'd get a replacement
So replaced it, same problem. Oh well, but I mean I guess you can ignore it, but hissing bugs me, not enough to not love this phone though.
Even have LTE in Pleasanton.
Thx fags for help anyway

Speaker replacement?

Just wondering but since I got my N5 and GF got Moto X on Monday, I can really tell the difference in speaker quality between the two and I use my phone to play music quite a bit. Has anyone just replaced the speaker in the phone? Is it even possible to purchase the tiny phone speakers separately?

OK, so you point me to an old thread that has no real information besides a few people saying they haven't tried it. Thanks.:good:
Your best bet is a pair of external speakers IMO. Otherwise software mods can push the built-in a bit further.

I was afraid of that. After watching a few teardown videos, it doesn't look like just any other cell phone speaker would fit. Seems like a proprietary setup.

If your willing to root your phone then install Viper4Android. No need for any other change. Check out the dedicated N5 and Viper4Android thread in this forums themes and apps section. The difference will be stunning for speakers, earplugs and bluetooth.

1) It's not really old.
2) It shows what the search function exists for
3) It gives you the same answers you would get if you asked (as this thread proves!)

[Q] speaker "explode" noise

when on max volume, the speaker will make a loud horrible crackling noise( like its exploding ) this will only happen in certain songs.
pretty sure my speaker is broken, or maybe its software?
what should i do?
Try to do the same thing on another OnePlus One. If its happening there too, maybe try another rom. If its still happening, it is the song.

Which ROM are you on? I'm guessing you're on CM12 (or some lollipop based ROM) I notice that same crackling noise on max volume (speaker) when I play Clash of Clans. Just reduce it one volume step down and the noise disappears (only solution till it's fixed). Otherwise wait for stable CM12S. If you're on CM11S/CM11 then that's not good

Yes I can hear it on Zeta ringtone. As I mentioned earlier its a lollipop issue (its still in beta), only solution is to be patient until CM fix it or reduce one step below max or go back to CM11s/CM11 (because that's stable).

Low in call volume across multiple roms on 8T any ideas how to increase it?

I'm currently using this but it's draining my battery.
Volume Booster GOODEV - Apps on Google Play
Simple and small app to boost your speaker or headphone sound volume.

I've tried viper and can't get it working reliably, I've also tried the stereo speaker mod all versions for 7t with no luck.
Any suggestions?

Cause the mentioned app does not require root, I thought you may not be rooted. Anyway, you'll have to increase handset audio gain at mixer_paths_*.xml found in /system/vendor/etc.
You can increase all audio output devices' gains. It's usually 84, increase by 2 till you find the one that suits you.
This thread has a guide, but it's since these files were located in /system/etc, and the guide shows a tip for speaker, not handset. 95 will probably get your handset to crackle, you won't love that.
