[Q] Assistance getting from stock to kitkat - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First, thanks for the assistance on this thread!
I am new to this device and have been exploring the section to help a friend. Since I want to get it right the first time, i'd like to verify the process and get advice from the pros!
It appears that the device is on the stock rom, 4.1.1.
So, from there I plan on doing the following. Please correct me if i am wrong on something!
1. Install the universal naked driver: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2386956
2. Update the device to the latest firmware and JB rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1697227
3. Root and unlock the device (now on 4.2): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1845377
4. Install TWRP recovery (preferred)
5. Flash new rom
Is this the correct method? Is this the best method? Is there a easier way of getting to a state where i can flash a 4.4 rom?
Thank you in advance!

For #2 I would use the built in OTA Updater to update the device in the Abbout page (because its "easier")
The rest look fine to me, I did the same procedure

OK so for the unlocking, lots of people are having trouble unlocking on the 4.2 Stock ROM. You may want to try unlocking with v7 on the 4.1.1 ROM, then upgrading to the 10.6.1.27.1 via fastboot and then you can follow the outline here to flash a kitkat ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48508679&postcount=7

Ah, dang... Too late on that one. Its already been updated to 4.2 in preparation for the process, which we want to tackle tonight.
What kind of issues are we seeing?

Well for some people the 4.2 ROM won't unlock using the tool, leaving them with a locked bootloader and inability to flash ROMs. Fingers crossed it doesn't happen to you.

i have asus tf300tg,rooted and unlocked.
there is a way ti re-lock bootloader? i want to restore the tablet to original state when i buied it.

ah...ok...thanks
I have this build out of the box US 9.4.3.30 then the updates is available and I didn't install but instead I did unlock, nvflash, cwm then root. Any advice on what should I do:
- click this update now it will still work or not since I'm already unlocked and might possibly brick my device?
or
- safely install the update but I will still be unlocked?
or
- ignore updates and just flash custom JB ROM?
Thanks!

This means you're still on the ICS bootloader. This is important to note because of your questions below.

Taking the JB upgrade from ASUS is the only way to upgrade the bootloader. Whether you take the OTA upgrade or do it yourself, you will have to perform this step at some point if you want a custom ROM based on the JB bootloader.

As stated before, you cannot re-lock the bootloader. This includes via ASUS upgrades... your bootloader will remain unlocked.

This will depend on the custom ROM you want to use. Do your research before moving forward either way.

Thanks for taking time to answer my question, I'm planning to use Hydro and I understand that I need to update to JB first. I'm kinda new to TF300 so I'm afraid to mess up so I wonder since JB update is in my notification can I install it or it may brick my device since it was downloaded while I'm completely stock but now my device is unlocked and rooted?
Here's what I'm planning to do:
-Update using the JB OTA in my notification bar
-Install CWM JB compatible
-Install custom rom
OR
-DL the latest JB firmware from ASUS
-Install CWM JB compatible
-Install custom rom
Thanks again for your help!

To Root? Or to unlock the Bootloader?

I'm on the latest official OTA of 4.2.1
Do I need to unlock the bootloader to root?
I read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2187982
and I'm still not sure whats happening... Do I need to downgrade to root, and do I need to unlock the bootloader to flash TWRP?
I know a bit of what I'm doing as I have rooted and flashed roms on an htc desire and a samsung s2x (t989).
On 4.2.1 theres the occasional hiccup and freezes when I use chrome... Is this still an issue in the custom roms? Also my Settings app crashes when I try to load the "Running" tab in the apps section of settings lol
Can someone point me in the right direct?

Well, you have two basic options:
Get root without unlocking.
That is good, if you want to stick with stock ROM, but want to run Apps that need root access.
Or if you don't want to unlock for any reason.
More details in this thread: [JB ROOT] motochopper works! (Root JB 4.1.1 & 4.2.1 with locked bootloader!)
Unlock and install the patched TWRP for -4.2.
This will allow you to root stock ROM easily or you can install custom ROMs.
Be careful: You have the boot loader 4.2, which means you need to pick the patched TWRP for that boot loader and you need to pick one of the ROMs supporting the 4.2 boot loader.
People have bricked their TF300Ts not using the patched TWRP -4.2 version.
There are currently only two ROMs available, but more should be coming soon, as Asus has finally released the new kernel source code.
If your preferred custom ROM supports only the 4.1 boot loader, you need to downgrade. Or just wait a little, as you like...

No and yes.
You can use the tool from the tread above just get root; no downgrading, no unlocking.
But yes, if you want to install TWRP, you need to unlock your device first.
You only need to downgrade for installing a custom ROM that does not (yet) support the 4.2 boot loader.

I have not used stock ROM for a while, but generally people report that most custom ROMs run much smoother than stock Asus ROM:
I would suggest downgrading ti the 4.1.1 bootloader, as there is a much larger variety or ROMS available.

Thanks was a lot of great information! I rooted my pad and did a few speed optimization things such as re-trimming and now its much smoother! Maybe I'll try a custom rom later but as for now, I'm happy with the updates that Asus provides

I'll keep that in mind but I believe there should be more soon as f69m, stated that asus release the kernel for 4.2
I signed that petition in your signature as well
I'd say go for the 'full experience'. Having an unlocked device also allows you to reflash ROMs at will and can also help in a pinch when it comes to backups/restores. Also, if you happen to lose root, it's easily re-rootable through the bootloader.
I'd just be careful of the current TWRP 4.2.1 recovery blob. I just flashed the one released this morning and I am currently getting this weird double screen thing. Best bet is to sit tight at the moment; an update should be out shortly.

Well, stay away from the TWRP 2.5.0.0-4.2 provided in some thread today, but TWRP 2.4.4.0-4.2 should still be working fine.

[Q] twrp and cm10 problem

New to me tablet and I'm new to rooting/etc.
Factory tablet on 4.1.1, build 10.4.2.20-20121228
I downloaded and ran the Asus unlock utility, then ran motochopper to root. I then loaded TWRP 2.2.2.0 (I realized the mistake later). Made stock backup using twrp ok. Wiped cache/dalvik/etc and tried to recover to CM.10.0.0. Boots to cyanogenmod logo and just sits and spins. I can reboot back into recovery and restore from backup ok.
I realize now that I've loaded an early version of twrp, would that affect the cm bootup? If so, how do I upgrade twrp? Or should I try CM10.1 exp using twrp 2.2.2.0?

I can see you are on the 4.1 BL. I would suggest upgrading to the 4.2 bootloader and the using the most recent versions of TWRP and CM. You would do that by flashing the stock 4.2 Asus firmware, then the latest TWRP from their website with -42 and then the latest cyanogen mod ROM which is compatible with that bootloader.

First off, thank you for the assistance. Here are the steps I believe I should take. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
1. Download and install latest 4.2 bootloader from Asus= US_epad-10.6.1.27.5
2. Would I need to download and install the unlocker from Asus? = Unlock_v8 for 4.2JB
3. Download and install TWRP for 4.2= TWRP 2.6.3.0-tf300t-4.2 blob
4. Then I should be able to run any of the CM 10.0.0 and up on the 4.2 bootloader, right?

Lots of ppl are having problems with the V8 unlocker. Since you are already on 4.1, you could just unlock now with the V7 tool.
1. Unlock with V7 tool (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949758)
2. Flash Latest Asus Stock (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949758)

4. Flash Latest CM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2413878)
Personally, I would also make NvFlash Backups so you can restore your tablet just in case anything bad happens. Link is in my sig

Ok, been reading until my eyes are bleeding.
From what I've read, Motochopper doesn't work for 10.6.1.27.x versions, so I would have to load 10.6.1.15.3. I should be able to download it and unzip it the first time on my pc. Then transfer it to the root directory of the tablet and run TWRP to install the .zip file. This would overwrite everything and bring it up to 4.2. I would then run the unlocker_v8 and install twrp for 4.2 using adb. If all that works, I should be rooted and unlocked and allowed to install CM 10 and above.
Please, anyone, check me on this. And thanks for the help.

Oh sorry, I thought you meant that it had failed to unlock and flash.
Flashing a stock ROM will not relock your bootloader. Asus doesn't want people relocking their bootloader .
I'm not sure why you are using motochopper if you are going to install a custom ROM anyways. Almost all custom ROMs have the SU binaries in them.
Once you have unlocked your tablet, you will never need to run another unlocker, so dont worry about v8. The NvFlash backups need you to be on the 10.6.x.x bootloader, so you would flash the stock ROM then do the nvflash procedure.

I'm not sure if you can flash the stock from the TWRP, to be safe I'd fastboot it from a computer. Once you flash the stock, it will upgrade the bootloader and erase TWRP. You would use the install command.

You can unroot and update via OTA but when you have a unlocked bootloader OTA's are always risky.
Just download latest ROM for your phone and flash it, instruction are also given and is pretty easy and safe.

No. Just start flashing according to the instruction. Root is a system level thing and does not interrupt in flashing. You have to root again after flashing unless it is a pre-rooted rom.
But as you are upgrading first flash stock motorola rom whichever is latest.

Look you can do flashing and upgrading in more than one way.
Just follow this link and do exactly what it says: If you have any question PM me, I will gladly help.
Also by flashing this way your recovery will be replaced by stock recovery and you have to reflash TWRP.
Your phone will be completely stock and all data will be erased.
Note:
Read very carefully before doing anything.
Also download correct rom for your device. The model no. should match.

DISCONTINUED_[VZW_Stock TW Rom][6.0.1 MM QA1 Build Odex For Locked Bootloader SafeStrap Only]

Do Not Flash This On Unlocked Bootloaders Or You Will Relock Your Bootloader!!!Once your on MM 6.0.1 you cannot restore a Lollipop Backup using SafeStrap or vice versa. Follow the link at bottom of post for guide and files to downgrade back to Lollipop
Ok the first thing I want to make clear is YOU WILL NOT HAVE ROOT! You will still have the use of Safestrap Recovery even though phone will not be rooted. What this will allow you to do is boot the non rooted rom back into safestrap. While in Safestrap you can do what you have always done, Flash Zips, Make Backups,Etc. This will also make it easy if you want to go back to PB1 rooted rom.
You must be on A rooted rom preferably A PB1 rom running SafeStrap
If Running FlashFire
Make sure latest busybox is installed
Install MM_Safestrap.apk
Reboot to safestrap
Wipe Data,Cache,System
Install VZW_QA1_STOCK_SAFESTRAP_ONLY_V2.zip
Roms will take a long time to boot up be patient!
This will put you on pure stock rom MM QA1 rom but from here you can get to safestrap to flash other roms or mods
To return to Safestrap you will need to flash a kitkat kernel NI2_stock_kernel.tar.md5 using odin then when phone reboots click on enter safestrap recovery. When leaving safestrap you must flashMM_KERNEL_SS-FF_Flashable.zip. Which will be located on your internal storage In a folder called MM_KERNEL_SS-FF_Flashable
If you want to flash other custom roms a guide can be found HERE

Question... I tried your stock PB1 before and it worked well. I however hosed myself flashing the incorrect firmware and USB bulk mode occured when I attempted to go back to PHX11 5.0 ROM. I flashed firmware as when I reloaded the backup of PHX 11 I had no data or wifi.
I saved the phone however and need to know what is the correct procedure to go back to LP backups if I try this and decide not to stay? I want to avoid bulk mode again!
Thank you!!

Would this be the same procedure for OG5 just substitute the PB1 caution firmware with OG5 caution firmware? I assume just match the ROM you go to with the caution zips that don't contain the bootloader.
Pretty sure I didn't use the caution firmware before and that what caused my issues.

OK thank you for clarifying. I use PHX 11 and always need to flash the OG5 kernal from safe strap so I assumed I'd need OG5 firmware for that particular situation.
Also thanks for updating the OP about using backups to and from MM - that will help others avoid issues.
I'll stop clogging the thread now! Appreciate all the information and work you do!!
Hey, thanks for this great site and all of your guides. It really helps.
I just rooted my s5 g900v and Im still on KITKAT NK2. Would it be possible for me to update from that version to this one following your guide?
Sorry for asking really basic questions. My phone at the moment is sim unlocked and rooted, but CID starts with 11 so I cannot unlock the boatloader, right? Then I assume this ROM is my best option. I want to be really sure that I will still be sim unlocked on the new ROM, its got nothing to do with it, right?
Many many thanks in advanced!

Yes you can update to this rom and also verizon phones are all sim unlocked so it will rermain sim unlocked. Just remember if your still on kitkat when you flash anything with safestrap do not use rom slots flash on the stock rom slot. If you dont know what this means then dont worry about it

Thanks for the hard work, unfortunately my cid 15 just took a nice fat swim and i had to get a replacement and got a cid 11 instead (##$$%@@@!#[email protected]). Your guides have been great to get to this point but got a couple questions:
Any link to what the debloat script removes? I just ran it and it doesn't seem to remove anything (ran it at same time as addblock). Going to reboot and flash it again see if it does. Any way we can remove the stuff we don't want? (all the VZW junk)
