USB On-The-Go - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I'm veery close buying this wonderful moto g device, but storage is my biggest concern. Luckly I have seen that usb otg is supported at moto g, but some sites (including GSM arena) say it has only USB host(?) support. Does moto g have fully working usb otg? I mean that there is possibility to transfer files between phone and memorystick and so on. Because of the lack of SDcard slot, usb otg is very important feature for me. I just want to make this thing clear before I order the device from amazon. Thank you, answer would be highly appreciated!

really can you transfer?? cause i bought an usb OTG cable, and i only can read my usb stick, not write it.
(i have my stock rom and i'm not rooted, so i'm thinking thats the problem but i'm not sure)
Sent from my Moto G

Pretty sure you can do both. I will double check that and confirm tonight.

Depends, some here can some can't. I can't write but can read and mount OK.

Yep it's different for everyone. I can't write but read and mount, unmount. I'm on stock rom not rooted. Tested with music and power amp.

Try this app + Total Commander:

It works perfect for me. I couldnt even mount with many apps and this one can mount, read and write every time.

Has anyone tried an OTG cable?

Has anyone verified that an OTG cable works or not with Chainfire's stickmount on a rooted One X?
Has OTG been removed from the kernel or not?
Some users have commented it's disabled in kernel. I have not verified this but I have verified it works in fastboot. Issue is the port will not supply power, so pretty pointless imo.
Will kernel support allow the usb to provide power, or is getting sd card storage working fruitless?

I've read that it won't supply power, but not sure whether or not that's something we can control in software.

I tried a plain OTG and it didn't work.
I haven't tried it with a Y cable yet though. I'll see when I get home.

Shouldn't work as we don't have kernel support.

It is working on stock JellyBean. But for me only 1 of 10 USB drives is working. There is somewhere thread with more info.
Is it a voltage problem? Did the leds light up on the nonworking thumb drives?
I use two USB3 8 & 16 gigs one fat32 and the other nfts.

The stock firmware is set up to mount external USB disks that are connected via external USB hub.
For CM, I've made a change so it works when connected straight via OTG cable - https://github.com/razrqcom-dev-tea...mmit/cd3c5915f646c6ff34771d0ba39209db1911c130
So on stock, the few USB disks that work without additional USB hub between the phone and the USB disk are the ones that implement their own internal USB hub.

8013 PROBLEM with OTG usb on Jelly Bean

Many of us with JB and 8013's are not able to us OTG devices on our Notes. I tested it yesterday with three different ROMS and none of them supported it. While on 4.0.4(ICS) everything was fine, not one issue. Are there any Devs that could help with this as I am not knowledgeable enough to do it. Thanks a lot!
Yes please, if one understand the working of the otg usb please help us.

Tried These-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2027604- DOES NOT WORK ANYMORE
Also Tried ROMN8000 DR AKRIM ROM N8000XXBLJ9 v06 27112012 Jelly Bean NO GO HERE EITHER
I also tried a stock JB update from Germany, NO GO EITHER.
so for me anything JB related stops OTG from working.

Well, I know you guys want OTG. I was just asking in general. I just wanted a stock JB Rom that is compatible with 8013. I won't be using OTG. Hmmmm stock JB update from Germany....i should try that.
i have an otg cable on the way, so I'll experiment when it arrives.

What are the advantages of using a OTG instead of the micro USB? So you can attach like flash thumb drives?

Otg gives you a supported usb drive.
So you can attach usb keyboard, usb mouse and a flash drive.

or a game pad.
or a umts modem... which is the problem:
I did look at the dmesg output, when I was under ICS mostly because of the current consumption, but also looking for the IR port.
I see now a big difference there, using the German JB 8000 Rom with the 8010 files.
Somewhat (perhaps a Init script) does load the OTG usb kernel modules, then load a usb modem (mif related to umts) and after a while there is a termination of a certain unknown pid, probably because of the modem not responding, which is then unloaded and also does switch off that OTG usb port and unload it's k. modules. Seconds later the whole thing is repeated again and again...
Surely also a reason why it's consuming more power, and probably the reason why other OTG devices have troubles.
I would like to help, but I don't know how android works on that (kernel) level, I had some knowledge about usb on linux 5 years ago, so I don't know how it has evolved.
If someone of you, Dear Rom Backers, could lead me to some (hardcore) knowledge about the whole startup(/wake) process.
I could investigate a bit more.
Other problem I did encounter with JB, somewhere a memory leak, my RAM slowly does fill up in a way, where I can't reset it, without rebooting.
OK I have my otg cable now, and can see the problem, but not the cause.
When I get near to something that can adb in I'll have a look, if anyones' got any pastebins of dmesg and logcat in the meantime please let me know.

this is using the 8000 rom on 8013 and 8010 devices, no idea if the issue is on 8000 devices, or whether it will be there on the 8010/13 firmware.

maybe it's conflict because people are flashing firmware that is not supported on their tablet, i sure hope that is the case.

Absolutely. I have an N8000 using the correct official N8000 JB firmware for the device and USB works perfectly. That's why there are different firmware versions for different devices - simple.
I have a small unpowered USB hub attached to a cheap generic USB OTG connector. I am typing this using a USB wireless keyboard and mouse and I have a Note 10.1 with 160GB of storage. 32Gb internal - 64gb using internal micro-SDXC card and 64gb with a second micro-SDXC in a micro reader attached to the hub (seen as a usb drive 1 so presumably can add more). That's 160gb seamlessly available in all programs for Video, Music, documents and whatever. Eat you heart out fruit-boys!!

For those running one of the N8000 roms on your N8010, try this:
Kernel extracted from zip posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2045751
Kernel has insecure boot.
Kernel Download link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/3en4hhdv08n7rsb/N8010_JB_Kernel.zip
Thanks to alirey for uploading the original OTA update zip
Thanks to graffixnyc for uploading zip with system.img and boot.img
Thanks to dsixda kitchen for insecure boot added to kernel.
May also work on 8013 as well.
Is it fixed in 8010 wifi release.

[Q] Is there a way to allow tab 2 7 to read storage > 4GB via usb otg

My tab (GT 3100 running stock 4.1.2 on stock kernel) won't let me mount storage higher than 4 GB via usb otg.
Is there any way to enable it?

I have the same problem. Have been trying to connect several flash discs to my GT-P3100 (RIPPER ROM V3, 4.1.2) with the OTG USB cable.
Mostly the tablet did not react. After getting the same error as shown in your screenshot I had to disconnect the OTG cable from tablet(not only the flash disc) From 5 different ones only one worked (8GB FAT32), but not all time. The others are different capacity, but also FAT32.
Is there any problem in the Android 4.1.2 on this tablet regarding OTG?

Otg and kitkat

So I'm on kitkat, all is wonderful, but today I just tried to connect my sdcard by otg like I use to do on jelly bean, but I noticed the phone never detect the device and don't send power to the sdcard reader
I also tried with the powered otg cable ( y cable) But The problem persist, so I'm wondering if kitkat update cut off the otg support?
Hope you can check on your devices to see if the problem is only on my end.

It 's a known fact that KK dropped the native OTG support. You can still use it with third party app like e.g. Stickmount.
