Tethering after Kit Kat update - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am currently un-rooted and have the entitlement check removed fro ma previous root so I can tether.
Does accepting the update put the entitlement check back?

Yes

The good news is; as stated and linked above, the new kit kat entitlement hack works like a champ.
The bad news is; You need to be rooted to do it.
Worse news is; If you didn't follow the SlapMyMoto thread instructions for obtaining WP off and root before taking the 4.4 update...you're screwed (till someone finds root on kit kat).
Advice from someone who has been there several times...don't ever take an OTA unless you wait and watch XDA for root solutions. Especially with a moto.

Mine is asking me to update too. Any idea if I'll need to re-root? Not too big a deal but would like to know. Thanks!
You will need to re-root. I lost mine. The previous root I used doesn't work anymore.

How did you root the first time ?
Looks like the adb root method with Gingerbreak is not working with the update. Guess I'll stick with the Thunderbolt as daily driver until another root method comes down the pike.
Wonder if that's why the phone was delayed - to disable easy root.
I dunno, seems unlikely... this post suggests there have been significant performance improvements:
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2011/05/13/verizon-pushes-software-update-to-samsung-droid-charge-prior-to-launch/
I was rooted. lost it.
I picked mine up on the way from work and was setting it up when I got the OTA.
I had most everything removed that I wanted to, ran titanium and already set up my hosts file when I got the OTA pop-up. I ran it but I lost root and the method I used to root it now do not work. Has anyone found a new method to root the Charge?
Anyone care to dump the new build for me?
would if I could....need root back.

Rooting the AT&T LG G2

My friend has the AT&T G2 and she received an OTA update to her phone on 2/13/14. I want to help her root her phone but I am not sure if the update she received will present any challenges. Can I still use the rooting methods that were already established before her phone received this update ?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Sub'd.
I was literally doing the exact same thing this afternoon too. My friends phone has the newest OTA and is on firmware D80010q.
I tried the normal methods to no avail. I was able to get Superuser on the phone, however, didn't have root access. From what I've been able to come up with we have to downgrade to D80010d in order to root it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=50354625&postcount=2121
I also am looking for some confirmations on what I mentioned above. Thanks!

Yep that's true. From what I have read in this forum if you have q or o then you have to downgrade to d in order to root. At least that seems to be the proven way!

Yeah its not my phone, its a girl who lives a few hours away. But if the rooting software isn't updated by the next time I see her (2 weeks or so), I'll most likely give it a shot. Post here or PM me and keep me updated on how it all goes. I found a youtube video that went through it and it doesn't seem that difficult.
Yea my friend isn't exactly close and she is likely to be deterred by any extra steps.
Does that video cover downgrading the software version back to d? If so post the link. If it's just a rooting a video I don't need it. I already rooted my Sprint G2.

Well I really hope that what someone told me in the past that jcase would have an exploit by the Summer, is true. Because I accidently bricked my phone months ago and screwed me back to 4.4 KiKat non-rooted. I just hope someone out there is working on finding another exploit.

Probably the someone. I know it was just a tweet, so maybe he was joking, but jcase tweeted about a month ago that he will no longer be providing anybody with any *unpatched* exploits. Based on the way people complain about him not "sharing" any exploits he has, I don't blame him. Anyway, I'd pin my hopes on somebody else.
Or, better yet, put the phone up on Swappa or something and go out and buy a developer edition of something, because that's your surest bet that you'll be able to root a phone going forward.

So your saying jcase probably has an exploit or two but he just doesn't want to release it to the public? Lol. That's messed up! I guess its just a waiting game until somebody else out there puts out an exploit for us non-rooters to use. *sigh* :/
P.S. : What do you mean you don't blame him???

I didn't say he had any exploits. I reported what he tweeted: he will not share any unpatched exploits. That means, I am pretty sure, that if he has any exploits (for any phones), he will wait until they are patched with an update before he shares it publicly, if he shares it at all, making it rather useless for somebody looking to root the phone with the exploit.
Here is the tweet: https://twitter.com/TeamAndIRC/status/460157450318929920
I am pretty sure it was in reference to a non-Moto device, but I'm sure he means the same for any device.
OK, here's a perfect example. Read this whole Twitter conversation between Jcase and some tool who thinks he's entitled to a root exploit.
https://mobile.twitter.com/spc_hicks09/status/473484675562749952
This topic of Jcase having an exploit had been covered many times if not mistaken. Is this helpful to the OP to keep hashing this out.

[Q] OTA 186.43.15 Let's Lay This Question To Rest...

...As I'm sure many others like me will visit this forum, read guide disclaimers, and still ask themselves "is it really true??"
If we accept the latest OTA (186.43.15) WITHOUT unlocking the bootloader, we are screwed. There is absolutely, positively, nothing that can be done (hacking, version rollback, etc.) with the phone forever. The bootloader has been locked and we're stuck with what we've got. No way to unlock it now.
So, is it really true? Please say it ain't so.
Yes, it is true, at least with the Motopocalypse method. There are other ways to bootloader unlock phones such as Sunshine, but I think that only supports newer Motorola devices.
http://theroot.ninja/
Also, you have to be rooted. If Towelroot doesn't work on the latest OTA (no idea if it does or not) then you'd have to wait for a new exploit.
Thanks for the reply.
What's most frustrating about this is that I knew it was coming, I knew the bootloader was going to be locked by the next OTA but I was too nervous to unlock the bootloader and possibly brick my wifes phone in the process. She would be pissed.
The system update notifier kept bugging her and I kept telling her to not to do it and eventually she just she went ahead with it. Ugh.

Forget another bootloader unlock exploit. That was a once-in-a-lifetime chance. As for root, well, there might be, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Of course, that's what we all said when the first KK OTA came out and look what they gave us - Towelroot AND bootloader unlock, but the bootloader unlock was a mistake - they accidentally reverted part of the code back to the original exploit code. So, that was a mistake on Moto's part.
But, this latest OTA is the last OTA for this phone. No more updates from Moto so don't expect the bootloader exploit to show up again.

That's what I was afraid of. Same thing happened on my Droid X once updated to the last build of 2.3.4
I guess the bottom line is this: I don't care that much about the final KK build as much as I care about wifi hotspot tethering. That's really what I'm after. After her phone was updated to KK from JB it killed the tethering app that we were using. So my only recourse was to flash the phone back to JB. But I just didn't have the time to mess with it, plus it's my wife's phone and I didn't want to risk bricking it.
Near as I can tell, after quite a bit of searching, I don't have any way to fix tethering with this latest build. I'll ask the question in the Q&A section.

Exactly what version of KK is she on? If she's still on 183.46.10, then that allows the bootloader to be unlocked which will then allow you to root it and then apply a tethering hack.
If, however, you are on 183.46.14 or 183.46.15, then yes, you are hosed and cannot revert back to 183.46.10 or JB.

She actually hasn't been happy with her XT926, so I think I might just buy a used phone of the same generation and mod it. If successful, we'll just swap the hacked one onto her account. I'm thinking Galaxy S3? I'd be curious to know what the "most hackable" phone of that generation is (JB or early KK)? Or should I post that question in the XDA General? I've searched and haven't found that question asked.
