You will need to re-root. I lost mine. The previous root I used doesn't work anymore.

How did you root the first time ?
Looks like the adb root method with Gingerbreak is not working with the update. Guess I'll stick with the Thunderbolt as daily driver until another root method comes down the pike.
Wonder if that's why the phone was delayed - to disable easy root.

I was rooted. lost it.
I picked mine up on the way from work and was setting it up when I got the OTA.
I had most everything removed that I wanted to, ran titanium and already set up my hosts file when I got the OTA pop-up. I ran it but I lost root and the method I used to root it now do not work. Has anyone found a new method to root the Charge?
Anyone care to dump the new build for me?

I'm not really familiar with the Android OS at all since I've only had my Droid 2 for about 3 weeks. When I rooted the first time, I didn't really know what i was doing. I was just copying and pasting commands. My question is after the OTA update breaks my root, what commands can I begin with in the command prompt to reroot. I know the first half of the instructions where you are pushing files to the phone can be cut out i think? but i'm not sure where it's safe to begin. i don't even know how clearly i just explained that but i hope somebody catches on and can help. thanks a lot.

I am not sure. I only have a Droid 2 to mess around with. Aren't the DX still on 2.1 though?
Well some people have the leaked 2.2 but im awaiting the ota upgrade. I realy don't care about custom roms but i do like th free wifi tether. I was just wondring cause i will accept ota update when it comes to DX. Id still like to have root access.

Probably a bit early to tell, but anyone know if this update will affect rooting? My dad took this update today... his charge has never been rooted before. Now today he tells me he wants tethering. I'm wondering if I can still follow one of the root guides with this OTA installed.
I'm sure just Odin a rooted version

You can flash a rooted version (such as the CWM Deodexed rooted release in Development), or you can just flash su directly. I would avoid flashing a full EP4D Odin for now because we don't have a dump of the CDMA modem, so you would be overwriting the CDMA modem with an older version by using the Odin.
Flashing imoseyon's kernel from Rootzwiki would also give you root, as well as lagfix and some other extras, but be aware that it is based on a slightly older kernel. I haven't had any problems with it yet, but it's something to be aware of.

Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for! I do have one question if you don't mind... since this method is just rooting the stock rom, do I have to wipe? I'm sure my dad would prefer to keep his phone the way it is if possible.

No wiping needed. You can root a device and keep all data and apps as it was.

Do I need to remove root or will the OTA still install with root on the phone? I know that I need to remove the clockworkmod bootstrapper and restore the system files it backed up (already done). All my other system files should be stock. I did not freeze any apps and I only removed bloatware that could be user removed by settings>applications on the device. I think I am okay to leave root installed. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
Yes, to my understanding, leaving root will not prevent you from installing the OTA package. However, your root will obviously be lost once installed.

Superuser now has OTA survival built in. Don't know if it works on the Atrix 2 but we will find out soon I hope.
Worth a shot, but going from GB to ICS is a major jump, so i'd be surprised.

You could give OTA Rootkeeper a try as well. Worked for me coming from gingerbread to the leaked ics build.

Yea.. I thought it should.. It worked fine on my friend's razr. But not when I did the leak.. but I may have forgotten to hide root or temp un-root or whatever and it didn't stick - I think.. I swear it said root backed-up though..

For what it's worth I didn't hide or temp unroot, just backed up root, installed ics, then restored root.
I had also hidden a couple other su-backups around the filesystem (similar to how ota rootkeeper works) in case the update specifically targeted where ota rootkeeper keeps its backup, but I didn't need to use them.
Well at least if it doesn't work, there are still other options to root.
I wouldnt worry.not much to worry about as we have a way to root ics after upgrading. The whole root keeper and any other root keeping method is only beneficial to those ics roms on phones that dont have an after upgrade root method.

My friend has the AT&T G2 and she received an OTA update to her phone on 2/13/14. I want to help her root her phone but I am not sure if the update she received will present any challenges. Can I still use the rooting methods that were already established before her phone received this update ?

I was literally doing the exact same thing this afternoon too. My friends phone has the newest OTA and is on firmware D80010q.
I tried the normal methods to no avail. I was able to get Superuser on the phone, however, didn't have root access. From what I've been able to come up with we have to downgrade to D80010d in order to root it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=50354625&postcount=2121
I also am looking for some confirmations on what I mentioned above. Thanks!

Yep that's true. From what I have read in this forum if you have q or o then you have to downgrade to d in order to root. At least that seems to be the proven way!

Yeah its not my phone, its a girl who lives a few hours away. But if the rooting software isn't updated by the next time I see her (2 weeks or so), I'll most likely give it a shot. Post here or PM me and keep me updated on how it all goes. I found a youtube video that went through it and it doesn't seem that difficult.
Yea my friend isn't exactly close and she is likely to be deterred by any extra steps.
Does that video cover downgrading the software version back to d? If so post the link. If it's just a rooting a video I don't need it. I already rooted my Sprint G2.

I have a rooted Verizon droid maxx. I am really worried about losing root if I take the ota. Is there any safe way to take the ota without losing my root? I've read like 2 posts of people saying the pro version of supersu and Survival mode keeps root. I've also read 1 post saying that they accidently took it and didn't lose root. Can anyone confirm this?
I would like to know the answer to this as well. I was just prompted for this update.

Considering that you cannot downgrade to a exploitable version of android if it doesn't work, I think I will pass.
Here is a guy that did it and said he keep root.

I believe the one that did it accidentally had an unlocked boot loader which makes root possible no matter what.

Saying that the biggest part of the update was the radio which can be flashed without taking the whole upgrade if you are worried about it.
Me personally, my BL is unlocked and I'm going back to 4.2. I've seen nothing but negatives (bad battery life, FC's, etc) with the updates. I might would stick it out if there was some new features but they seem like just more of the same.
I used survival mode and took the ota and still have root. Unfortunately I lost my WiFi tether and am trying to get that back now.

That way you don't have to mess with reverting it back when next updated comes out.

I have a droid mini XT 1030, stock with root and wifi apk hack.
I removed the wifi apk hack, put super su into survival mode and took the OTA. Worked out good and I retained root.

Thanks! It worked great and now I have my wifi back.
My Maxx and girlfriend's Mini both kept root.
However, we've both lost TWRP recovery and can't seem to be able to flash it.

Are you sure you're rooted? Did you check worth root checker app? Are your bootloaders unlocked?

Bootloaders aren't unlocked.
Yep, all root functions seem to be working fine.RootChecker says I have root, I was able to install the latest version of Busybox, and TiBu and SecureSettings both get root access.
Now if somebody had some thoughts on flashing TWRP recovery...

Maybe I'm brain dead. I thought I had TWRP on these phones after SlapMyMoto, but I guess it retained the stock recovery.
Too many Android devlices... can't keep track of what's running what.
I thought the big issue was not retaining root, but completely losing the Write-Protection off ability (ie ability to use xposed). I'm locked bootloader and don't see a reason to unlock.
