Just got a notification, update size 114.9mb, rebooting right now to install.
Had the leaked version of 2.3.6 for a while now, HUGE improvement, let me know what the OTA updates you to, just curious.

Do you still have the update.zip file on your phone?
Probably a bit early to tell, but anyone know if this update will affect rooting? My dad took this update today... his charge has never been rooted before. Now today he tells me he wants tethering. I'm wondering if I can still follow one of the root guides with this OTA installed.
I'm sure just Odin a rooted version

You can flash a rooted version (such as the CWM Deodexed rooted release in Development), or you can just flash su directly. I would avoid flashing a full EP4D Odin for now because we don't have a dump of the CDMA modem, so you would be overwriting the CDMA modem with an older version by using the Odin.
Flashing imoseyon's kernel from Rootzwiki would also give you root, as well as lagfix and some other extras, but be aware that it is based on a slightly older kernel. I haven't had any problems with it yet, but it's something to be aware of.
I have instructions on how to root the Samsung Droid Charge at the link below...

Was this thing themed by a blind guy? It's like they took the Epic GB status bar and just slapped it on the old notification pulldown. So gross! I see the pumpkin vomit reference.

Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for! I do have one question if you don't mind... since this method is just rooting the stock rom, do I have to wipe? I'm sure my dad would prefer to keep his phone the way it is if possible.
Wipe what?

No wiping needed. You can root a device and keep all data and apps as it was.

My daughter's phone this morning had an update from T-Mobile. I told her not to install it, as it may revoke root.
She clicked on it (kids....), but luckily it says it's been post-poned until the 22nd (tomorrow)..
Just wondering if anyone has any idea what it is?
I know any OTA updates may potentiall revoke root, but just wondering if anyone else has gotten this.
The worst it could do is overwrite your root, but it wouldn't take that ability away, you would just need to re-root it after the update was completed. I heard some rumors that KJ2 was being pushed out as an official update, but I'm not entirely sure.
It's 100% true or i wouldn't have posted it. I got the update via Kies. It's coming OTA soon.

Whats KJ2?
Also im running Gingerbreak on it, if it revokes the root, would the thing even boot up?
I got it today. No obvious changes but it does seem to work a bit smoother.
Gingerbreak? you mean GingerClone? Gingerbreak is the rooting method for Gingerbread (2.3).
KD1 was the original stock firmware, then they pushed KG2 as an update, and the latest update is KJ2, which includes some bugfixes and not many other changes.
You can still root after the update. KJ2 is seriously worth it. The phone runs so smoothly now. Although, I still think this is TM's way of staving us off until they release GB. XD

Sorry, you are correct
So it's safe to install the update? I'll tell her to do it as soon as I get home.
is anything else different? I generally try to let others test the waters first, since the last "update" merely removed a useful shortcut function and added Google Books as bloat.

I went ahead and grabbed the update off Kies. So far, it looks like the persistent memory leak issues have been addressed in the Touchwiz/Zipwip software package. Also, my battery performance has returned to what I expected with KD1 (given my device's configuration).
I haven't encountered any drawbacks to upgrading. No reason to stick with KG2 or KD1 at this point--unless you fell in love with a custom...

I am running gingerclone as well, i got the notice for the update but postponed it, I didn't know if it would be safe to run since i wasn't on a stock rom, I got tired of seeing the update icon so i let it run, it failed.
The phone rebooted and I have not seen the update notice again.
I have TouchMIUIwiz v3 and I also ran the update after getting sick of the constant reminder and icon. It failed and disappears for a few days then come back. I've repeated the process a few times now.
Update installed fine for her and nothing is too different. Safe to go.

Seems much more simple to root when your at 2.3.5 (with stock recovery) then OTA update and you will keep root. I think it MIGHT work even if you have CWM but have not tested.
INope doesnt work if u have cwm i tested and so did a few others. But yes thats correct thats easier but i posted this for those who took the update and were not rooted

People are reporting that they didn't loose root when updating. However, not sure if they had stock recovery or not installed at the time. I didn't risk it and flashed back to stock then confirmed SuperOneClick did not work. Used the method described above and rooted.
Yes they had stock recovery. You cant take the ota unless you have stock recovery. And correct if you are rooted with stock recovery u will not loose root
Coming from Captivate and have had flashed HTC phones in the past, I kind of feel like anything Odin IS the easy method. It's like we had a OneClickMethod and a TwoClickMethod.
Correct odin is very easy if you read and follow all directions.

OK, total noob question
Since this is my first smartphone and I'm new to rooting/flashing ROMS/themes, I have a question about this: do I accept this OTA and then flash my current configuration afterward? Or should I ignore it, and if I do will VZW keep nagging me about it?
I'm running Humble 5.0 RC2, imoseyon 4 kernel, HumbleComb theme, and have backups from both the latest CWM and Titanium.
TIA for any advice.

You have to go back to stock using odin, use the the pit file and download the stock rom.
Once your back to stock you can update the phone OTA.
I went back to ED1 and got the update to EE4, but no EP4 yet

Personally I have a similar setup to yours and will not worry about the OTA. Custom roms built on it will be available soon enough, and what you have now will have mostly all the same fixes. And if you want radios I'm sure an odin flashable one will be along soon.
Is it EP4D or EP4P? If it's EP4P, why did Samsung release old code on their open source page?

Yeah Im gonna wait too. No reason to go through the hassle of back to stock to maybe receive and update when soon enough someone will have create something else.

You think they stop working on trying to improve things and fix bugs just because a build was submitted for OTA testing? If that were the case, we'd never get the OTA.

Sorry, but nope! once you are on custom rom, you just have to wait for developer release version. If you want to take the update now, just odin back to stock EP4, then OTA to FP1, then FP5 then FP8. FP8 stock rom is pretty fast and smooth. Your choice!!
Is there any way to stop the OTA update from occurring?

as stated above nothing is formally supported on FP8, yet.
however, a few days ago I put Tweaked 3.2 on top of Stock FP8 (installed via CWM zip). Got to keep FP8 Kernels and Radios (confirmed kernel with "uname -r")
Nothing obvious broke, Calls/SMS/MMS went in and out... both wifi and mobile data worked.
Disclaimer: only played around with this thing for like half a day. did NOT put it through the paces. YMMV, hack at your own risk, etc.
I wouldn't do it unless you are messing around with your spare phone like i was.... just for grins
For now I'll ignore the update. im sure it's nothing I can't live without.
If you are currently running Tweaked 3.2 FP5 (or anything else not stock), I agree with you 100%.

Pretty sure it'll work, it doesn't really matter if you're going to end up flashing a custom rom; but it's all preference maybe if you want the new modems just take the update.

Just root. The newest update had signal and battery issues, along with many other issues. Verizon even pulled the OTA. Flashing a newer ROM will give you the newer features anyways, and it will be better.

It was incredibly easy. Only thing that tripped me up at first was that I didn't have the Samsung drivers installed on my PC. Since the thread didn't mention installing them I was assuming they weren't needed. You can get them here. Once I installed them and went through the steps in the thread, I was rooted and unlocked in a few seconds.
I highly recommend LiquidSmooth v2.7 if you'd like to get rid of TouchWiz.
