T-Mobile upgrade program - original device already sold - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok, my original device is HTC one and i sold it on CL. i have Nexus 5 now and all of a sudden i want to upgrade and planning to get Note 3.
my understanding is i still have EIP left and i dont care about extending that since i love t-mobile.
question now, do they need the original phone that was bought (htc-one) before i will get the note 3????

1.85 or 2.20 firmware

Stupid question... I'm sure. I bought a new HTC One X from AT&T a few days ago and it should be here this week. I assume that most of these devices were built and stocked for some amount of time. Making that assumption leads me to believe it will have an older firmware installed on it. Does anyone have evidence that this is not the case? Anyone buy one recently and it was loaded with 2.20 or newer?
There have been some threads recently that people are still able to get a model with 1.85 installed. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for the older firmware, but at this point it depends on how lucky you are.
If you ordered from AT&T directly, or from Amazon wireless, you're almost 100% sure to get a new one. If you bought it from a retailer that had some extra stock, you may still be able to get one with 1.85.

Crap... bought directly from AT&T, but they were able to ship it same day (which I found quite odd) so I hope that it's older stock. We shall see... man I hope a root option comes out for 2.20. Only if I had the time to learn how to figure that stuff out myself!

But you might get lucky and get an 1.85 only time will tell
I just got a refurbished one (yesterday) with a date sticker of 8/9/12 and it came with 1.85. I went through warranty exchange, I had a GS II and received three replacements that arrived broken, so they gave me a One X. Already trolling online classifieds for someone to swap for a GS III (without me adding $).

Well I got mine (new) and it's 2.20... ugh! I guess the waiting game begins. What really stinks is I can't WiFi tether and I can't get google voice to replace my voicemail system... to heck with AT&T!

I got all sports of errors setting up Google Voice. Same on my Aria. Just power through and apply anyway (it gave me that option) and manually change your call forward number. You can get the forward number from Google Voice, it will be the same area code as your own number, vs a generic number everyone uses.

Did you just upgrade your phone and keep your existing plan? I was considering returning mine to AT&T and possibly buying it elsewhere linked to AT&T but I need to keep my unlimited plan (for obvious reasons).
EDIT: I just called them up and the woman I spoke to was nice enough to look into it. The phones they have in stock right now all have the newer firmware (based on their order date).

If you have a Best Buy Mobile store check with them, I bought mine there and that had plenty of 1.85 on shelf. Worth a try

Nope, I'm in the same situation. I'm thinking about checking out Best Buy after work today to see if they have any 1.85 on the shelf and if they do, I will return my 2.20. Thank goodness for 30 day returns!

It's been my experience that customer care generally doesn't have a clue. For example, they were telling people some of the galaxies came with fm radio hardware when they weren't. They had no idea whether my phone was just 4g or 4g LTE, they couldn't even give my any support when I was having problems with the AT&T MADE APP "At&t messages"....So...yeah, if it's not int he scripts, doesn't involve rebooting your phone or checking your IMEI, pulling the battery, or just replacing your phone...they're clueless...just saying...

Right on. I basically returned my 2.20 HOX yesterday and had to tell them that I was having battery issues so they wouldn't charge me the $35 restocking fee. I asked if they had old stock available and of course they didn't. However, retail outlets seem to have plenty of old stock around so I was able to take my business elsewhere. The people at the particular AT&T store I was at didn't question firmware comments. However, the guys at Fry's were very familiar with what I was looking for and were nice enough to open boxes, charge phones, and check firmware for me. Got to love fellow geeks
I got my warranty replacement today and how can I check my firmware version?

[Q] How to activate on Sprint?

I am switching from AT&T to Sprint and I just purchased the Unlocked Nexus 5 on Google Play. What exactly do I have to do in order to activate my phone on the Sprint Network? I am used to just popping my SIM card into the new phone and it works but I know Sprint is a CDMA network and does not use SIM cards.
1. How do I get the phone activated on Sprint
2. Will it run just as good on Sprint as it would on AT&T? It will still work with LTE right?

Sprint does not have a byod line as far as I know unless you are going prepaid. Nobody knows yet if any of the mvnos will activate the nexus 5. You could always get an Iphone or something on your new line and sell it to cover your nexus cost and then some.
For a new line it would be much easier just to buy from sprint for $49.
Coverage/LTE will depend on your area but yes it will work.

According to this page the Unlocked version will work on Sprint:
http://www.ibtimes.com/nexus-5-release-date-unlocked-model-will-run-sprint-network-1452872
I probably will get an iPhone or something just to sell it since I will be able to get a new phone on contract pricing but I still need to know how to actually activate my Nexus when I get it. I was thinking about getting the $50 Nexus through Sprint but I am afraid if I do that I it will not be the exact same model. I don't want any Sprint bloatware on my phone and I don't want to get updates later than the rest. I also want to make sure the phone I get is heavily supported by developers. There is just too many unknowns on the Sprint model that I am scared to get it.
So anyway, do I just call Sprint to activate my device?

There is no 'sprint' model they are the same device. So to activate you will need to get a sim card from sprint and then you can either chat, call, use the online activation or go to the store to get set up.

To get a SIM, either go into the Sprint store. Or go online to the chat (you'll need an existing Sprint acct for this).
To activate, just call the big S and give them the info that they ask for
There's a thread going about this already that has some good info:

Sorry but just to be clear, Sprint will sell an unlocked phone? Has that ever been done before? Do you have a source? Not to discredit you but it seems that I should just buy it from Sprint instead of Google Play if there is no real differences. I just want to be sure.

I don't have a source atm, but that's all I've heard around the forums. You need to start a 2 year contract to get the phone at their low price though ($50 I think?). They're selling an off-contract one for $400 too. Same device all around.

This is the first time they have ever done it. This also means that the phone will be updated directly by google, with no carrier approvals/delays- which is also unprecedented for CDMA.
I myself am very surprised more people are not talking about this.
I stopped at a Sprint store today and asked about activating a phone bought from Google directly and they said it couldn't be done? Is that the case? I have about 5 months remaining on my contract with Sprint before I go on to another carrier.

Tried chat last night, and then calling in today but getting the run around. Was told I had to go corporate repair store; called store and was told that they don't normally stock SIM cards and that they won't have a N5 compatible one for a while until there shipment of phones comes in. Anyone performing software SIM unlocks?

Not via manufacture unlock code but rather software unlock. My Note 8 is still being paid off so AT&T won't give me the unlock code and I'm headed to Germany next week. I'd rather not go the eBay route.
Don't know about the software unlock on this phone, but I got my unlock code from a vendor that I used multiple times for $25. Unlocked mine a couple of days ago.

I ended up using a guy off eBay, he seemed reputable and had his WhatsApp contact info in the eBay ad so that made it easier to reach out to him. Cost me $13.99 and my AT&T Note 8 is fully SIM unlocked.. problem is I tried to activate it on Sprint and since it apparently still has a balance on it they couldn't add it to inventory.. quite the pain in the ass.
Does AT&T unlock the phone for free after 14 days of ownership?
I had bought my s8 from Best Buy and completed the unlock form on the at&t site 15 days after purchase and got the unlock code within 2 days.
11 days to go for my Note 8, i will let you know
As far as I know, you have to pay off the phone first before they will unlock it. I unlocked my previous AT&T phone that way.

Yeah, I was lucky enough to get my Note8 on September 12th. I put in my unlock request at around 10am today and got my unlock code at 1pm. So they were at least super quick doing it.
Here's a bit of a tip:
If you don't have another carrier sim to put in after you get your unlock code you can just dial this #7465625*638*# and it will ask you for the Network Code. Type in the digits AT&T gave you and it'll say unlocked once successfully entered.

Thanks for that info. I haven't had my note 8 for the 14 days but it is paid in full. ATT provided the code within the hour.

Should I get the 7 pro or 8(non pro) TMobile?

I have the 8 right now but I'm still within the exchange period and really debating on if I should exchange it. Honestly I'm not the impressed. I feel like the brand isn't as amazing as it once was. I don't care about 5g because I'm connected to WiFi 90% of the day. I'm just thinking price point wise. I mean I can save like $200 if I go with the 7 pro if there isn't a huge difference. From what I have been reading the 7 pro might be better than the 8. Just looking for opinions.
If you don't care about 5G, OP7 Pro might be a better bang for the buck. Personally, I like screen without punch hole. I don't use front camera that much, so no issues with pop up camera. It's individual choice and you can't go wrong with either one of them.
I got the 7 pro almost 2 months ago. I have the option to get the 8, and I went to the store and played around with the 8 and I have decided to stay with the 7. I just didn't see any advantage other than 5G, which is limited in my area anyway. The camera is not any better and I'm happy with what I have.
Sent from my OnePlus 7 Pro using XDA Labs
Go 7Pro like guy said above you get full screen real estate no punch hole. There aint gonna be a big difference in software so if the 8 wasnt amazing to you then the 7Pro might not be either . I had a Pixel 3 XL b4 i got my 7Pro. Let me tell you that OnePlus is amazing still. 7Pro will have better stats than the Pixel 5. Look up BBK Electronics theres a few different brands of phones under thier umbrella One Plus being one of them. But maybe not the best.
Go for the 7pro. Design alone will put this phone in an elite class of Legendary smart phones. Development shouldn't stop anytime soon.

You can easily bypass that with root and flashing DP3, then international firmware
Works for TMO phone.... Not sure about other carriers
Yes indeed there are bypasses because 1+is developer friendly but if you are going to pay cash for some reason you're better off paying the same and getting the fully unlocked one. Best to send carriers the message that we don't approve. I think the the sprint one is locked. Anything from Verizon would be also. T mobile is actually the most open of the carriers.
Thank you for all the responses. I ended up exchanging for the 7 pro. It was a 8gb ram 256gb memory variant so I got double 5he storage for less and I couldn't be happier.
So with root on this from what I'm reading sim unlock is required?

mmwave support is in all Pixel 5s sold in the US. No need to get a VZW branded device for any reason other than deals, rebates and paying it off over 24 months without further credit checks.
