1.85 or 2.20 firmware - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Stupid question... I'm sure. I bought a new HTC One X from AT&T a few days ago and it should be here this week. I assume that most of these devices were built and stocked for some amount of time. Making that assumption leads me to believe it will have an older firmware installed on it. Does anyone have evidence that this is not the case? Anyone buy one recently and it was loaded with 2.20 or newer?

There have been some threads recently that people are still able to get a model with 1.85 installed. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for the older firmware, but at this point it depends on how lucky you are.
If you ordered from AT&T directly, or from Amazon wireless, you're almost 100% sure to get a new one. If you bought it from a retailer that had some extra stock, you may still be able to get one with 1.85.

Crap... bought directly from AT&T, but they were able to ship it same day (which I found quite odd) so I hope that it's older stock. We shall see... man I hope a root option comes out for 2.20. Only if I had the time to learn how to figure that stuff out myself!

But you might get lucky and get an 1.85 only time will tell

I just got a refurbished one (yesterday) with a date sticker of 8/9/12 and it came with 1.85. I went through warranty exchange, I had a GS II and received three replacements that arrived broken, so they gave me a One X. Already trolling online classifieds for someone to swap for a GS III (without me adding $).

Well I got mine (new) and it's 2.20... ugh! I guess the waiting game begins. What really stinks is I can't WiFi tether and I can't get google voice to replace my voicemail system... to heck with AT&T!

I got all sports of errors setting up Google Voice. Same on my Aria. Just power through and apply anyway (it gave me that option) and manually change your call forward number. You can get the forward number from Google Voice, it will be the same area code as your own number, vs a generic number everyone uses.

Did you just upgrade your phone and keep your existing plan? I was considering returning mine to AT&T and possibly buying it elsewhere linked to AT&T but I need to keep my unlimited plan (for obvious reasons).
EDIT: I just called them up and the woman I spoke to was nice enough to look into it. The phones they have in stock right now all have the newer firmware (based on their order date).

If you have a Best Buy Mobile store check with them, I bought mine there and that had plenty of 1.85 on shelf. Worth a try

i just bought a one x the other day, so what you guys are saying is that i cant do crap with it yet? it has 2.20 on it, can we not unlock the bootloader with htcdev or anything at all to install a custon rom?

Nope, I'm in the same situation. I'm thinking about checking out Best Buy after work today to see if they have any 1.85 on the shelf and if they do, I will return my 2.20. Thank goodness for 30 day returns!

Thank God I like what it's running, so did att lock it or htc, I was under the impression that htc was allowing it for all the phones now, what happened?

It's been my experience that customer care generally doesn't have a clue. For example, they were telling people some of the galaxies came with fm radio hardware when they weren't. They had no idea whether my phone was just 4g or 4g LTE, they couldn't even give my any support when I was having problems with the AT&T MADE APP "At&t messages"....So...yeah, if it's not int he scripts, doesn't involve rebooting your phone or checking your IMEI, pulling the battery, or just replacing your phone...they're clueless...just saying...

Right on. I basically returned my 2.20 HOX yesterday and had to tell them that I was having battery issues so they wouldn't charge me the $35 restocking fee. I asked if they had old stock available and of course they didn't. However, retail outlets seem to have plenty of old stock around so I was able to take my business elsewhere. The people at the particular AT&T store I was at didn't question firmware comments. However, the guys at Fry's were very familiar with what I was looking for and were nice enough to open boxes, charge phones, and check firmware for me. Got to love fellow geeks

I got my warranty replacement today and how can I check my firmware version?

Anyone know how to unlock the Captivate once it's rooted? Or do I need to buy a code from one of those sites? Thanks.

Did'nt they pass some law or loose some class action suit, after 90 days in good standing or something like that AT&T has to give you the unlocked code... The only exception I think was the Iphone, something about thats apple's terms to unlock or not....

You're in the same boat as me. I bought one today knowing it was locked and might not have a code available for a few weeks from one of the "usual" places.
If you did like I did and bought it legit from an AT&T store, there's a chance you can call up AT&T tomorrow (what I'm trying) and get it unlocked all proper like. Otherwise, you may be in for a bit of a wait.

Problem is I bought it outright from Best Buy today to use on Rogers in Canada, so I don't have an ATT account. I thought the unlock would be relatively painless.

Yeah me too. One reason I'm hesitating to buy it is that it's sim locked to AT&T. Since I also travel to other countries, I really need a totally unlocked phone. Please let us know how it turns out.
Phoned AT&T this morning and was told that the Captivate cannot be unlocked, at least not right now.
I called back (sometimes that helps) and chatted with another rep. and was told that AT&T has a 10 month exclusivity to the Samsung Captivate, and there would be no unlock until then.
10 months?? exclusive?? Get a clue AT&T, this thing is available on every major network, and unlocked on most.
If you don't have a post-paid AT&T account, you will get no help from AT&T for this unlock.
But most AT&T reps have no clue what it is. You have to explain to them. But only if you meet the qualification (post-paid, at least 90 days etc.).

I've tried the second one and they came back with 'no code found', and refunded my money.
I also phoned AT&T with my brother's account info and they told me 'can't unlock the phone for 10 months due to it's an AT&T exclusive phone'.
I called AT&T as I have a Premier Account with International calling and always get a subsidy sim unlock, but they were unable to find the unlock code. It seems that these are not available yet. AT&T might be blocking them for a while since the phone is so new.
Tried www.cellunlocker.net/www.unlockcodesource.com and they could not find a code for my phone either. Just ordered from www.unlockallcellular.com. Lets see how that goes.
For some reason, my IMEI ends with /2 after the usual 15 numbers. Anyone know why?
same here, 16 digits/2
My order with unlockallcellular.com is showing as Generating Code... at the moment.
Not getting my hopes up at this point though.
Order is still pending, but they have updated their website, the Captivate is now listed as Not Available.
Bummer.

I am starting to think that this has something to do with our weird IMEI's that end with /02. Maybe some new sim lock feature that Samsung and AT&T have come up with to prevent unlocking. Does anyone know the Vibrant and Galaxy S IMEI formats? Do the have 15 digits and the /02?

any advantage to having the tmo version over the international version

I got an unlocked Asian version of the sensation. It has the same bands as the US sensation so I'll get 4G. but no USA English and the charger had the European adapter. The place I bought it from said I could exchange it for a tmobile branded sensation. Is there any advantage or disadvantage to keeping the Asian version over the tmobile version(locked)? Other than the no USA English (which will be addressed when we get soff and custom roms)and power cord(i can have him swap the adapter)
Manufacturer's warranty?
From most of the sensation problem threads I've been seeing, it looks like most have the european version.

I havent had any issues with mine the past 3 days I've been using it.. Also trying to avoid the threads where people nitpick over everything. If I start reading them my OCD will take over and I'll start to nitpick.. hahaha
I have only noticed mine gets a bit warm when I'm constantly doing things on it, but other than that, no major issues..
I did lose my weather lockscreen widget(and any other lockscreen widget) and lock screen app shortcuts, but a factory reset solved that. And I think I know what caused it. I had installed ADW EX used it for a few minutes but went back to sense, I guess when I went back to sense it didnt reset the sense stuff so I didnt have the widget and shortcuts

Spoke to HTC, After giving them my serial number they confirmed it was a phone from Malaysia, but since it was the same model as the one available in the states it would still be covered under the Manufacturer's Warranty. She did say though that they wouldnt most likely do an exchange if something was wrong with it, but they would definitely repair it under warranty. So that's good news. Also spoke to the insurance company with tmo and they said they would cover it as well. I asked if I had to give them the IMEI number to update the records and they told me to do it through tmo. Called them up and gave them the updated IMEI so incase anything happens to my phone I know it's covered

No nv_data.bin
So after doing some searching; online and in the phone.
all the "free" app unlock will NOT work on the Skyrocket. Like the TSGS2, it DOESN'T have the NV_DATA.BIN to modify.
For now, the only way to unlock is to wait out for your 15-30days + a good standing with AT&T to ask for an unlock codes.
There *might* be some dealers out there offering unlock codes for SkyRocket.

I called them asking WTF about that. Other companies were selling the phone unlocked online, and I gave them URL's. I told them T-Mobile has the same phone for sale, so their legal department's "exclusive" excuse is BS.
I wasn't pissed or using obscene language towards the operator, because it wasn't his & her fault (called twice), but they did put note in their records about my complaint and my request to forward it to their manager, along with the URL's for other companies selling it unlocked and the URL for T-Mobile's version of this phone.
So what did I end up doing? I paid $20 to have it unlocked from an online service. Apparently the phone that can't be unlocked has now been unlocked.
I really think this will be my absolute last AT&T phone. Their business practices have gone to sh*t over the years (ie: the T-Mobile attempted buyout and their illogical reasoning). Every time they bought a company, prices have gone up and customer service has gone down.
Plus, T-Mobile's no contract offerings are rather attractive.

Who did you use to unlock the phone? There are so many out there, I'd prefer to deal with someone who has an actual unlock code, and if it worked for you, it will work for others.
I don't have the AT&T version. I'm with Rogers in Canada, and the model number is pretty-much the same (the only exception being an "R" at the end to indicate that it's Canadian) ... SGH-i727R.

are you trying to root your phone?
if it hangs at "daemon started successfully" then chances are your computer can't see your phone correctly... find adb and type "adb devices" and see if it can identify your device.
install KIES to get your computer to see the device:
(can't post links, google "kies samsung" )
Yeah, when I tried the first time it killedthe daemon so the computer wasn't seeing the phone. I ran Kies and reinstalled the drivers then ran darklords root method and I'm rooted...
Does this increase the flash counter and put the exclamation point on the boot screen?

Bounty - Enable International Capability

Hello all! Although I have been a forum follower daily, this is my first post.
I am offering up a bounty of $1000 USD to help me finally resolve the global capabilities of the Verizon I535.
Recently, I purchased this phone, replacing an iPhone, from Verizon in the US. I returned home here to the Dominican Republic and learned that this phone is not capable of connecting to our local networks other than Edge technology.
I started trying all the advanced settings through various ROM's and actually came VERY close to enabling 3G. The signal came on for about 30 seconds and then reverted back to Edge. CM10's ROM was the closest that gave me this option.
So! Who wants to join in this Bounty???? OR, would someone be interested in swapping my I535 for an ATT model??
Thanks everyone and looking forward to the follow up posts!!

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I did try everything that has been on that forum link.
I found another that I believe is on the right track to what may be missing in enabling true 3G.
This was the quote that caught my attention:
"If it is anything like the Rezound, it comes SIM unlocked from the factory, but the stock TW framekwork may not support the full GSM capabilities yet. CM10 doesn't sim unlock it, it just adds the missing code. "
Again, thanks for any info!

If there possibly is not a fix for this issue, is someone willing to trade a working Global phone for my S3?? Today I looked at a friend who has a Droid Razor that just received an update from Verizon and it works flawlessly. Also, the same friend has a Rezound working too.
Any takers? I'm starting to really HATE this S3 with this issue. It is like being on Dial Up internet service on an old Commodore 64 PC!

Yes, I could, but I was trying to keep my i535. I cant find an ATT model S3 here locally in the DR for anywhere near $1000.
My carrier is Claro and the cost to buy one from them is approx $1485 USD. So, the Bounty is still less.
Good phones here in the DR are better than having gold in your pocket. Literally! People kill each other over technology here, sad but true.
If you want it bad enough - prepare to pay heavily.
You have a phone you would like to sell me then??
Holy cow, that's crazy. No I don't have one to sell you.

If you're looking for an AT&T model why don't you post in the AT&T forum?
You could go to the market and buy what you want/ need for less money......

Does the unlocked version support Sprint?

If you get the unlocked version from HTC's website, does it support Sprint, or will they have different radios? I tweeted HTC and they said that the unlocked version will NOT support Sprint.... But if you look on there website at the radios then I don't see an issue, they are the same as the unlocked version.
Here is a link to the website for the radios.
http://www.htc.com/us/smartphones/htc-u11/buy/#!color=black
And the unlocked radios:
http://www.htc.com/us/go/htc-u11-unlocked/
I also asked if I were to get the Sprint version would that support all other carriers (ie. AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon), I did not get a response from HTC.
I will say this would be absolutely ridiculous if the Sprint version is dumb down and doesn't support the rest of the world. I honestly would think about switching if this were the case. I just want to be on a GSM carrier that I don't have to worry about "if my phone will work" on this network. Annoying.
BTW I say this because I travel a lot, so having 1 phone that works everywhere would be the best thing in the world.

out of the box, the Unlocked ROM would not support Sprint, but the hardware is the same between the unlocked & sprint, so technically you could flash the Sprint ROM on the unlocked model. The problem is the unlocked IMEI would not be whitelisted. As far as the Sprint model supporting the GSM carriers...yes it would, provided the sim was unlocked...or you could flash the unlocked ROM.

OMFG THANK YOU! This makes way more sense now. I have been all over the Internet looking for an answer. Well at least I know the actual hardware is the same.
I feel like having to deal with hoping that Sprint will support the unlocked devices IMEI wpuld be worse then buying the Sprint flavor.
So I have 2 easy options then.
1. Buy it from Sprint at full price and do not extend my contact. Then have them unlock it which they can't say no to if I have no obligation to them.
2. Buy it from HTC but in the Sprint version. But I have to figure out if it is unlocked. I think it is. It looks like it is on there website.
Man I hate how buying phones and carrier plans work in the US. I wish we would go to an overseas model, and almost every phone is unlocked. Then you just decided what service you want yourself. So easy to just walk in a store and get service with whatever phone you want.

Ah that is very handy, I might look into doing that. Thank You.
However, I do think I am going to purchase the phone at full price anyway as that is what I was planning on doing, but this is good to know. At least the hardware is the same and I wont be locked down by Sprint. I should just buy it direct from HTC I think.

Yeah, it is cheaper to buy from HTC at full price especially with the $50 off code.. Plus you could make interest free payments via PayPal credit if you wanted to

Ya I was thinking the same thing. But its weird on HTC's website if you select the Sprint version it doesn't have the color black. But if you go to sprint they do..... facepalm.
Also I spoke with Sprint yesterday to see if they would tell me if the unlocked one works, and they refused to even check. They wanted the MEID of the device, which I don't have, and I told them I don't have it until I buy the phone online and have it shipped to me. So this is annoying.
Also I just ran across this article on Android Central that the Verizon version dose not have CDMA radios. Now that makes me wonder about the Sprint version.

I swear this is a headache. Just go to Sprint and buy the dang thing, then either unlock it myself or have them do it. Just have to suck up the extra $50.

Ya I guess you are right on that. I don't even want the things, I suppose I could just sell them. But I know myself and i am bad a selling electronics even if I don't want them.
Oh and went to Sprint's website today and I could not even click on the HTC U 11. I hope they didn't stop pre-orders. Or I could just till the device comes out I suppose.
If I buy the Sprint version from HTC. Can I still have Sprint unlock it?

last time I checked the device had to be active for 3 months before they would unlock, but not sure if anything has changed....but like I said earlier, it's not difficult to unlock yourself

Pre-ordered mine today and haven't received any sort of confirmation email from HTC. I also got 2-day shipping...we'll see if that makes any difference as to when it will :fingers-crossed:show up. :fingers-crossed:
Edit: Cancelled my pre-order and confirmed with 2 people on the support staff that they will not be shipping until mid-month.

Hey guys. Kinda bad news. HTC (Germany) just told me after telling me this morning my unit will ship today that it will ship on the 8th of June.
I asked why they didn’t contact me and sent me an email telling me it is delayed. They just told I am expected to contact them in order to know my shipping date. A bit ridiculous.
I sincerely hope they don’t have hardware issues.
Well if it’s the same as with my pixel xl then we all have to wait because HTC cant keep its production up with the demand.
