[Q] Internal memory partitioning - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everybody,
I am considering getting a Moto G, but i was wondering how the internal memory is partitioned, and how much of it is available for apps and cached music on the 16G version. I read somewhere that on the 8G version, the internal memory in split into 4G system memory for the OS, and 4G for user data. But i could not find the memory partitioning and size for the 16G version.
Anyone with a 16G version who can check this out for me?

I have 12.92 gigs of space before user apps etc. I'm still on the 4.3 ROM, haven't received the new 4.4.2 OTA upgrade.

Cool, does that mean that they did not partition the memory on the 16G version?

I have 8GB version and no partitioning is used, the free memory is available for anything.

My Moto G 8Gb is really fast...and perfect except for 2 (common) problems, the most important is the FREE APP Space :
1st - impossible install APP except fro Play Store : NO Amazon app, NO AppOfTheDay free app,..
2nd - 5Gb FREE that with a bit of music (2Gb) , Sygic Navi (600Mb) and something else means only 1 Gb for free space ,,,but the worst info is that,
if i check with DiskUsage it says i have :
APP : 1193 Mb --> when i go to install a new app (only 11 Mb) now it says "i have not enough free space" !! (
SYSTEM DATA : 614 Mb
Really too few space..

Got the same problem.

I have a 8gb and I'm thinking of changing it now for a 16gb.
I don't have any music or big game apps just will have a few average apps and photos. Do you think 8 will be enough?

8 Gb. is enough for me! Like you said, i just have few average apps, i am not the person who's taking a lot of photos and i don't have a lot of music neither, so i'm fine with 8 gb ñ_ñ

I'll might stick with it then.
I'm the sort that downloads a app and if I don't like I delete it. I can't see me having more than 20 + the pre installed apps at any one time. but maybe a good few photos.

For a few big apps , couple of songs and photos 8GB serves well

Not much memory,
The phone is awesome, I bought the 8gb version, I didn't know only like 5gb are available for normal use, I installed two games and that's it, no more available internal memory.
This phone is awesome in all ways, very customizable but not much memory...

The internal memory - how much is actually available?

I know that they are supposed to come with 4 gigs of memory. My phone its is telling me have have under a gig. Now, I haven't had out long and I only have a few apps. Could myes rooted rom take up all the available space? Or is there's another source? Thanks!

I think you're confusing internal vs SD card storage. My understanding is it's 1GB internal, and they ship with 8GB SD card (originally they were going to ship with 4GB SD so that's why there are some sites with bad specs out there).
I have a ton of apps installed and I still have half my total internal available.
I was told that the phone had four gbs internal in addition to the eight gig card.

I believe you were misinformed. And I stand corrected, it's got 768mb internal, and 8GB flash storage.
Actually it does have 4gb of internal memory, but you can only use slightly over 1gb. This was the same issue with the G2.

I'm not sure this is accurate. What's on the 4gb ROM? Makes no sense to have 4GB of read-only memory on any device.
If the OS\support is generally under 300mb, and is housed within the 768mb, what takes up the 4GB ROM? That wouldn't make any sense. I know there was some bad info that went out when the phone first released.... I think this may have stemmed from that.
I know ot doesnt make sense bit thats what it is. Liok at all stat sheets for.the phone. There is a pile of memory that is rwad only holding a backup of some kind.
Sent from Inspire 4G w/ cm7
The OS itself is stored in the 4 gig internal SD, and uses RAM out of the 768mb. Even though it has 4 gb of internal storage, the way its formatted only let's us use 2 gigs. its formatted for speed and stability rather than size, therefore we lose half of it, then the OS takes up almost a gig, so now were down to 1 gig of usable storage on the internal card, then we have the 8 gb external.
And I believe the 768 of RAM is for running processes, for multi-tasking.

Sounds like the same engineers who designed the AT&T network had their hands involved in this phone's design process.
Let's put a 20 gallon gas tank on a car, but weld a divider down the middle so someone can only put 10 gallons of gas in it. LOL
There was the same issue withe the G2 when it came out. It confused the heck out of a lot of them.

I'm still noy buyin it that there's a mystery 4GB in the phone.
Looking at the root system it's about 500mb, of which 300mb is free (for tasking), and then I have about 250mb of apps installed, which adds up too close to 768 for coincidence in my mind.
If there were a 4gb ROM floating around in there, it'd be absolutely useless. Obviously the OS isn't installed on it, since It's ROM (read ONLY), and apps don't use it as storage (read ONLY), and it's not used for multitasking space (read ONLY), so there's no logical explanation for it.
MY theory is originally the phone was going to ship with 4GB memory card, and they changed it to 8GB at the last minute.... and that was an artifact that got jumbled with the old specs.... because GSM Arena and AT&T both show 768RAM plus 8GB SD Card only.

GSMARENA Inspire 4G
gsmarena also states 4GB INTERNAL STORAGE, not ROM specifically.
From their site...
Internal 4 GB storage, 768 MB RAM
Card slot microSD, up to 32GB, 8GB included, buy memory
There is a thread in this forum with this issue questioned, and some guy emailed HTC. The answer we are telling you is the same they tell every one. This is not AT&T HTC phones do this, look at the G2 the Thunderbolt. It isn't a lie they are telling every one. That is what they use the memory for, some sort of back up(I don't know exactly what it is backing up). HTC does this with all the newer phones.....
Here is a good answer for this guys, we lose half the available space for speed and stability.

It's 16gb total on the att version, international is 32. I believe it's about 2gb for apps and 5 for os and system junk that is allocated.

32 is for the international HOX. You still have 16gb of internal memory, but obviously that's not all accessible, which should've been obvious from the get-go. The system takes up space and I believe 2gb is reserved for apps and there are other partitions too that take up space.
The One X does seem to allocate a lot more storage to the OS, Apps, and System than previous HTC Android phones.
My HOX shows 2.21 GB total internal storage and 9.93 GB phone storage. That adds up to 12.14 GB. That means the OS, Apps, and System take up almost 4 GB. My older HTC Inspire 4G used about half of that.
A 16 GB iPhone or iPad has about 14 GB useable. It really sounds like they have allocated some extra storage for future expansion on some of the partitions.
Titanium Backup shows:
System ROM: 1.05
Internal: 2.37
SD Card: 10.6
I'm not sure where the remaining 2GB are. Does Android have a swap partition?
The system ROM is in EEPROM storage and doesn't use the flash memory.

Why does my One S have much less space than advertised

I recently bought a One S and one thing that has really been bugging me is the fact that I have much les storage than advertised. It says that you get 16 GB, but the actual amount is 12.14, and
2.21 of that is internal memory so I only actually have 9.93 to store my media. Why is this? Also it says it should have 1 GB of RAM but task manager says I only have 650 MB.

16 GB storage is partitioned and some RAM is reserved for the system and the GPU.

First off no hdd or flash memory is ever 100% as advertise because its been formatted to run. That's why there is only 12gb instead of 16gb. And that 2gb is the space dedicated to app installs. And the remainder is for you to do with however you please. Music, videos, extra game data (like many of gameloft games where you need to dl an extra 500 MB or so) or whatever you else you want to throw on other then an app install.
When you see an app in market and you download it and install it, it goes directly to that 2gb partition. If you download an app from a third party website it first goes to the 9gb space and once it installs it, it installs on the 2gb and all you need to do is delete the original dl .apk or keep it as a back up.

The above answers covered the answer so no need to reiterate but I just want to opine that you should consider yourself lucky, HTC doesn't rape you like Motorola does. On the Razr and Bionic, they are advertised as 16gb internal but only 8 is accessible to the user. They allot 4gb for apps and 4 for the OS. Bonus for them is obviously expandable memory.

System takes the resources
On many phones the preinstalled software takes a lot of space. I would recommend to install another ROM. I always do that to get rid of the software I don't need.
Ok. Thanks for the help. But what about the RAM? Shouldnt all of it be available?

As already said, some of the RAM is reserved for the system and GPU. For example my HD2 should have 576MB RAM but it only has 411/403 (depends on the ROM/Kernel I guess) because 128MB is for the GPU and the rest is used by the system. I never actually get that much free RAM (I never get more than 200MB free, and that's only on startup; normally I have around 130MB free) but at the same time it's never really been an issue.
Ok. I just though that everything was shown together because I always have 500 MB of RAM used even with all applications closed.
The phone will still reserve some RAM for itself, and that is not the best indicator of RAM that's actually in use.
HTC One S is a gorgeous piece of hardware. To bad they didn't add sd card support...

System software installed on separate partition usually. So removing them will not add more space to the user data.

[Q] Amount of internal storage available for installing apps

Hi all,
Does anyone know how much internal memory is available for installing apps? I know the Note 10.1 comes with 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, but how much of the storage can I use for apps? The reason I'm asking is because recently, I keep getting messages on my Galaxy S2 phone about low memory (only ~200MB free) when installing new apps. And I don't even have that many apps installed. Apparently, there's only 2GB for apps and 11.5GB for storing files like MP3s and videos. I assume the remaining 2.5GB is used for the OS and other internal apps.
Given that this is a tablet, I would expect there to be more than 2GB of memory for apps, especially for the 32GB version. It would be disappointing if that's not the case.
Thank you.

[Q] Inbuild Memory

Hi,
I recently purchased Samsung Galaxy SII Plus. As per the site, it comes with 8GB inbuilt memory. When I received the phone, it shows only 3.9 GB total space and 3.56 GB space available. When I contacted the seller, they told me that its Android system which is occupying the remaining space. I am not aware if this is the right reason. Does anyone know about it?
It's normal... All Android OEMs lie about the storage space.
For example the HTC One S 16GB comes with 9.3GB which seems a lot more like 8GB to me.

Yeah, I thought it meant 8 GB available to user too, not 8 GB in total including system files. Thanks to my SD card though, I still have 2.7 GB of internal memory free.
Why is the /cache partition 1 GB though, seems a little overkill?
its almost the same for all device(my old ace says it have 512mb,when only bout 180 is available to me). There are no other internal memory stuff inside your phone,so whatever system will definitely eat some of your internal memory.Even laptop manufacturer are the same(320gb only 280 available),what u expect them to say? Sigh,i dont understand why people only make a fuss bout it now, does everyone start using smartphone only after 2013?
Well people need more and more space andOS need more and more space and phone memory isn't increasing dramatically.
