Color calibration? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all, long time lurker and seldom poster. I've been following the progress of most of the custom kernels for our awesome Nexus 5 and there's one thing that I'm still really missing that we had on our Nexus 4. Color and gamma calibration.
I'm just wondering if it's going to be possible to tweak the Nexus 5 screen like we could with the 4. The nexus 4 had a pretty terrible stock display, but with for example paranoid androids color profile the screen was one of the best out there and I'm hoping that we're still going to be able to achieve that.

Nexus 7 UI on Motorola Xoom?

I know it sounds silly, with such a big screen, why would we want a UI that consumes so much of the screen? Well I think it would just be kinda neat to see it on the Xoom, who knows maybe people like it more? Is there any possibility of this happening? I have EOS 3 126 and it is running just fine.
Here's some more info for you, even though I don't have the answer.
Nexus runs phone UI, Xoom runs tablet UI.
Nexus can be tweaked to run tablet. My guess is its a build.prop tweak.
See that's what I thought cause that's how you get the Nexus 7 to run the tablet interface, so I don't know of the same thing can be done with a simple build.prop mod.

To get the phone UI, you need to change the DPI I believe. I tried it and my XOOM didn't boot, had to reflash my ROM. Probably not a good idea.

Same, I was messing with the DPI but after I did that it just wouldn't boot, which sucks.

I wish I had a link to the article so this wasn't such an anecdotal response but I'm 99% sure that I read the ui the nexus uses is actually an in between mode for 7ish inch screens. The thing I read said there was a phone, a 7" and a 10" mode. The only reason I bring this up is that I would be interested in seeing that other view too just to compare so if you find anything else on the subject please let us know.
Edit: http://liliputing.com/2012/07/how-to-change-the-nexus-7-user-interface-to-full-tablet-mode.html
That article has a little more detail on the three ui modes and lists the dpi of the nexus 7 (213). As well as what range to set it to to get it to display the full tablet mode. This might be a good place to start from to try to get the xoom to go down to the middle size ui mode

Well, compare nexus to phone UI. It seems the same.

Not really, in landscape the notification tray pulls down covering only the left of the screen and in portrait it only covers the middle of the screen.

If anyone finds a ROM with nexus style ui plz post it I'd love to try it out on Xoom or gnex and won't get a n7 until Oct or DEC 25
I don't think it is possible t get the Nexus 7 UI n a phone with a smaller display....

it works on JB for me (partially)
i just used the dpi app on the market, in 4.1 it changes to 'hybrid' mode if you like, but the navbar is missing from the bottom! atm im using virtual buttons to emulate home and back buttons! any way to force navbar to appear? EOS JB Wingray Nightlies (143)

I made a universal mod for this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1898907
I really like this on my Xoom, it makes the screen a little weirder to type on but that's only in the beginning, after a while you get used to it. It feels a little slow when dragging the notification window down but it feels faster in some other areas like scrolling through my pages of apps in the app drawer.

Sorry to double post, but I have to say, your universal mod is SO much better on my Wingray. Much faster, the bar is a lot bigger so the soft keys aren't so small and difficult to tap and it is just overall less glitchy, with the other mod, my Xoom restarted every time I held the power button, with yours everything works just fine. Thank you so much.
Oh and the keyboard is so much bigger and better to type on, it seems the other one makes the screen size feel smaller so it all is very much wasting screen real estate.

Firstly, you shouldn't compare a Nexus 5 to an iPoop product lol
There are plenty of apps available for White Balance that may do the job you're looking for it to do. If you want a more integrated white balance (not an app), there are plenty of custom ROMs that add different color and resolution than the stock KitKat.

I wouldn't know of any - I have never needed something like this. You'll have to search around at some of the available ROMs and find some that may do it. Check the ROMs section.

You got it all backwards. It's actually the iPhone that needs white balance correction compared to the N5. Just search on Google N5 display calibration results. It's scary accurate.

Laggy Nexus 5

Just received the phone yesterday. right at startup the phone updated to 4.4.1 (yes, not 4.4.2) and updated all relevant apps.
I then started to play with it a bit, and immediately sensed glitches and lags. Scrolling through photos in gallery, scorlling to the widget zone in the drawer (using nova launcher) or scrolling through feed in google+ - lags.
I compared it to my nexus 4 on same gallery pictures scrolling, browser scrolling and so on, and in all, my nexus 4 was smoother.
Actually, I had almost no lags with my nexus 4 the entire year off (worth mentioning Im using a custom rom, but didnt see no lags or glitches on my moms phone too)
For a second I was afraid I have a hardware problem. so I tested it on antutu. I scored 18k-24k, which was less then all of flagships phones (htc one, s4 etc..) my nexus 4 scores 20k.
I know all are cheating on antutu, and I dont give it to much importance. but lags? serieosly? How can it be?
I'll appreciate some comments and your impressions and suggestions.
Refund it

I read something about CPU binning perhaps you gotten a lower quality CPU?

Cant RMA currently. would like to know whether it is a software of hardware problem.
I find a repreducable situation in which my nexus 5 lags dramatically and nexus 4 and nexus 7 do not:
I enter images of HD wall papers and scroll through them. my nexus 5 really struglles replacing pictures while nexus 4 and nexus 7 are swiping between extremly smoothly. I checked it on both chrome and dolphin. same outcome. very smooth transition on nexus 4 and 7, very very lagy transition on the nexus 5
nexus 5 has 4.4.1
nexus 4 has 4.3
nexus 7 has 4.4
Any help tyring to figuring out where the probelm comes from will be highly appriciated.
Any help?
Can you guys enter the link with your phones, swipe through pictures and tell me if you feel any lag?
Nexus 4 or 5
Now after reading this , littl confusion whether to go for nexus 4

[Q] Recommendation for ROM along these lines?

Hi Everyone,
Just off the bat, this isn't a request for any "best" ROM, what I'm after is recommendations for some ROMs to test that meet the below general outline. Other threads I found through search are often too generic or not along the same criteria I'm after.
I'm a fairly experienced user who, after running many custom ROMs in the past, has been running stock ROM with a custom kernel and Xposed framework (Gravitybox) for a while now. I'd like a similar experience, but would like to see AOSP updates / bugfixes / performance tweak patches from CAF etc. While maintaining stock feel and compatibility (so not CM?). Also would like an easier upgrade path via flashing rather than rolling back to stock for OTA updates etc. Can flash my own bootloaders / radios when the time comes.
Since I use a custom kernel and Xposed for features I don't need any particular features so minimalist would be good. A lot of the ROMs often have their own custom settings managers etc which would be redundant for me. Not afraid to get my hands dirty adding/removing system apps to suit my needs etc.
Any recommendations on where to start? It would be appreciated, thanks in advance.
I would check out some of the roms on here labeled as AOSP, most of them, if not aiming to be next to pure stock are in early stages of development, so should see the latest fixes and updates added to them as time goes on.
Purity/PA might be up your alley.

I've run PA in the past, and found it to be too feature heavy/customized for what I'm after now, with PIE controls, DPI scaling, custom settings panels etc all included. I'll have a look at Purity, thanks.

Then you haven't seen PA since we out version 4.x

aosp and caf dont go hand and hand. itll be either aosp or caf. and you never have to "roll back" to stock to get an update, never, there are multiple methods of upgrading without ever having to roll back(even on stock).
Another vote for Purity as it sounds like it would meet your requirements.
Slimkat runs very smoothly and has a "Black Out" feature that works very well and saves you a lot of battery by doing so. Plus its has a smaller DPI so it's gives your phone a new feel while still coming across as stock.

Yeah, it may on devices with AMOLED screens but not traditional LCDs.

Absolutely. AMOLED screens have LED pixels. This means each pixel is its own source of light and on pure black images, no light is needed so the pixels can be turned off.
LCD pixels do not give light. The they get their light from a light panel behind. This panel either gives out light or other doesn't. So whatever colour the pixel is, light still shines through - which is why we don't get pure black on our LCD.
Offtopic ... LED TV's do not have LED pixels. It's still an LCD display but instead of having a full panel create the light behind the display, it has an array of LEDs.

Try out Elix-R from Hyperruner.. The base is stock, but with tweaks under the hood the ROM runs super-smooth and stable.. It has white-ui with Moonshine icons and a custom navigationbar.. ElementalX-Kernel and some other awesome stuff..

I would recommend cataclysm, it's a flash and forget ROM. Even tho the main thread has been closed due to people asking where Atlantis is, it's up to date and it is super stable and fast, I always return to cataclysm, because it has a nice amount of features yet it feels like stock.
With that in mind, I hope he returns when 4.4.3 gets out so we can be up to date haha.
