Just received the phone yesterday. right at startup the phone updated to 4.4.1 (yes, not 4.4.2) and updated all relevant apps.
I then started to play with it a bit, and immediately sensed glitches and lags. Scrolling through photos in gallery, scorlling to the widget zone in the drawer (using nova launcher) or scrolling through feed in google+ - lags.
I compared it to my nexus 4 on same gallery pictures scrolling, browser scrolling and so on, and in all, my nexus 4 was smoother.
Actually, I had almost no lags with my nexus 4 the entire year off (worth mentioning Im using a custom rom, but didnt see no lags or glitches on my moms phone too)
For a second I was afraid I have a hardware problem. so I tested it on antutu. I scored 18k-24k, which was less then all of flagships phones (htc one, s4 etc..) my nexus 4 scores 20k.
I know all are cheating on antutu, and I dont give it to much importance. but lags? serieosly? How can it be?
I'll appreciate some comments and your impressions and suggestions.
Refund it

I read something about CPU binning perhaps you gotten a lower quality CPU?

Cant RMA currently. would like to know whether it is a software of hardware problem.
I find a repreducable situation in which my nexus 5 lags dramatically and nexus 4 and nexus 7 do not:
I enter images of HD wall papers and scroll through them. my nexus 5 really struglles replacing pictures while nexus 4 and nexus 7 are swiping between extremly smoothly. I checked it on both chrome and dolphin. same outcome. very smooth transition on nexus 4 and 7, very very lagy transition on the nexus 5
nexus 5 has 4.4.1
nexus 4 has 4.3
nexus 7 has 4.4
Any help tyring to figuring out where the probelm comes from will be highly appriciated.
Any help?
Can you guys enter the link with your phones, swipe through pictures and tell me if you feel any lag?
Nexus 4 or 5
Now after reading this , littl confusion whether to go for nexus 4

Do you guys find the nexus s to be sluggish specially within the browser? I find that the nexus S struggles with web pages that have lots of pictures or media content specially with the flash plugging set to on all the time. I haven't root or anything since I bought my phone from bestbuy to try it out the second time the first time the GPS was crappy but this time around its much better anyways does performance improve with custom roms? I want to root and put a custom but I'm afraid best buy won't take my phone back since my carrier is really at&t and having a phone with no 3g sucks balls

First, Gingerbread doesn't use hardware acceleration in the web browser. Second, turn flash to On Demand..that should speed things up some.
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk
If that is the case then why in all the previews/reviews I see the galaxy S 2 browser performance so smooth even surpassing the iPhone. Isn't the galaxy 2 running gingerbread?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
Try Firefox or opera mobile, they're much faster when it comes to loading pages with lots of pics and vids.
I'm using opera mobile, and it's my favourite so far among all the browsers. Firefox is good but it does not support flash.
Dolphin HD 5 looks promising, but still in beta, gotta wait for the official release.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
just an off topic question, why didn't you just buy an at&t nexus s? i've found some for as low as $548 shipped (assuming you paid full price @ best buy). Also since you're only using 2G on your Tmo version, at&t should be charging you regular 3G rates.

That is a modified browser apk. The Galaxy S browser is reportedly smoother than the Nexus S as well..small tradeoff for a pure Google experience and they're supposedly working on it for future release.

it is not enabled in stock gingerbread, however samsung has enabled hardware acceleratio in its browsers ( sgs1 and sgsII ).
For the time being, the only application making use of gpu acceleration is opera. (Not the mini version). you could give it a try.
cheers/
+1 on using Opera Mobile. It's nice and speedy.
Because I wanted to try out the nexus s before plugging the money for it, atleast buying it at best buy I'm able to return the phone no questions asked. Also I'm not really sold on android yet since my main phone is the iPhone 4 but I'm getting bored with it at the moment. So far android has impressed me but I'm still getting used to the interface and I do find it a bit quirky at times. In some cases the phone feels smooth and at other times it feels a bit sluggish so that's why I asked if putting a custom rom makes the phone smoother or just gives it additional functionality.

Question
When I do decided to get the at&t version of the nexus s are all GSM roms compatible with it or they have to be specific for i9020a model?

Mine seems to be incredibly zippy. Turning plugins to Demand mode worked wonders for me. My phone loads flash intensive sites as fast as most computers I've used, including flash videos like those on newgrounds. This is also my first Android phone, so there's a tiny chance that I'm exaggerating a little, seeing as how I'm coming from the pain that which is WinMo 6.5.

i also notice the sluggishness at times
I have a Samsung galaxy note 10.1 and it is very laggy on the home screen. Is this normal? Here is a video I made with my camera
http://youtu.be/a3tyXOrQ4oo
Before I send it back I just need to check if it is normal or not
Without seeing the video, I'd say it's normal for the default home screen (Touchwiz) to be a little laggy when compared to a vanilla Android (like the Nexus 7) or a third-party home screen like Nova Launcher.
I'd personally recommend Nova Launcher.
it is not THAT laggy. and with JB update it is smooth.
In slow motion land, that is not normal. Try making a proper video first
not normal @ least in my experience mine has virtually no lag! I think that the opinion That Touch wiz is Laqqy is a bit off I have both the
S3 and N 10.1 and neither is at all Laqqy

Thanks for the useful comment.
I have updated the video to a higher quility.
Also waithing for Samsung Techy to call me back regarding this.
I did the slow motion to show the jumps it makes. some times it is smooth to some extend but most of the times it jumps huge parts.
Factory reset did not fix it and installing JB will void my warranty. So if there is a hardware issue then I will be stuck with it,
Try a different launcher from the play store like Nova it apex see if that helps. Also try clearing the cache for the touchwiz launcher if another launched works then u know its not hardware.

Mine was pretty bad, but after doing a factory reset twice now, I can report my lag is not bad.
I see a SLIGHT stutter in the opening/closing animations of apps. Definitely lag in the app drawer. The lockscreen is probably where I see the most unresponsiveness/lag. You hit the power button and you have to wait a second, then its fine. The animation from the lock screen to the home screen almost always stutters. The default browser seems about 95% zippy and responsive. Pinch to zoom stutters occasionally. But touchwiz seems very smooth and fluid for the most part. The camera takes perfect pictures. There also is some shutter lag, but not bad.
Overall, the phone is nice, but I am going to be calling Samsung/AT&T and do whatever it takes for them to fix this. This is unacceptable. I noticed that the apps I put on my phone, the more the lag grew. I disabled a lot of the AT&T bloatware and Samsung garbage. Right when I performed a factory reset my phone had ZERO lag. So those getting new devices are probably experiencing what I did. The lag slowly came back, but not as bad as before.
My only reason for not returning it is, once this device gets roms, its going to be a beast. But right now, its performing like a 2011 device.
I reset mine 20 times and it still lags

I've done one factory reset and things have improved quite a bit. However, it's still not performing anywhere near where it should be. Can't wait for AOKP..

I've read them all, trust me. Nobody exactly describes what is going on with their lag. Some are reporting minor lag, while others are reporting much worse lag. I was hoping everyone call describe exactly where the lag is and when its happening.
i guess i'm lucky. I dont experience any lag, whatsoever.

Dude this is the 2nd thread you made about the lag, theres already 20 threads about it
To be honest I kind of agree with the OP. I've read many lag threads but nobody mentions what's lagging. The only lag I've noticed on mine is the gallery is super slow. At least 3 seconds to load from home. I haven't tried quickpic yet though. Mostly because I'm finding air view useful.
But really, other than the gallery, zero lag.

I deleted about 97 apps / processes and have another 4 frozen, turned animations to zero, forced enable GPU rendering, installed Nova launcher, and am running Trickster..
The entire phone is lightning fast now with the exception of the keyboard opening and closing. The Samsung KB is unusable.. Swiftkey works much better but it does still have very minor lag.
The steps I have taken are insane and should not have to be done on a phone carrying these specs. This phone should flat out scream right out of the box.

Yea I reduced my animations to 0.5x and it definitely helped. Everyone should at least do that much. Most people do that on custom ROMs anyway.

Im just wondering what youre all using for a browser, aside from Chrome. Coming from my n4, i had the aosp installed and it worked amazingly. Obviously now, there are others that should work better.
Im finding chrome is eating my battery, and i would prefer something light, that allows for gmail bookmark syncing still.
Note, im all stock, no root.
Thanks in advance for any comments!

I've seen the thread, but I can't seem to get it to install with 4.4. I can't rename my browser file.
Do you find chrome drains the battery more than other smaller browsers?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4
I can't really speak to that, as I haven't really tried any others since I bought my GNexus a year and a half ago. I will say that Chrome seems to drain my Nexus 5 battery more so than my Moto X or Nexus 4. By that, I mean it shows up as a higher percentage in my battery stats than it used to on the other phones. So that could just be the Nexus 5 being more efficient in other areas, lowering the proportionate battery usage of other apps. Regardless, Chrome syncs seamlessly between my devices, is the best browser on my PC, and comes as the default on my N5 and N7, so I use it.

Opera mini is small and fast.
I've tried pretty much every browser out and nothing beats xscope pro. I love the instant forward and back navigation (sorta like IOS7 has). No loading again like all the other browsers for android.
For anyone that claims there's no lag on the G4, s6 or even s7 please don't even reply because you are just wasting time. I'm guessing anyone who ever experienced stock android can answer this and hopefully one of them can answer this. Please let me know if it lags and stutters, I am thinking of trying out this phone for 3 months
I have both the lg g5 and s7 edge and my onest opinion the lg g5 does not lag like the s7

I've owned an S7 and returned it back after dealing with the G5.
So, no the G5 does not lag like the S7.
I see the same. My G5 is quicker and smoother than my S7 edge. The S7E was super smooth but as with most if not all Samsungs lag develops after some time. I love Samsung devices. Heck I always have one around but I will not deny that there is a little lag.

The phone feels much slower than a Nexus device. My Nexus 6 and Nexus 5x running pure Nexus Roms blew it out of the water. You can tell tho it's the launcher, I never tried the Google now launcher cause tap to wake wouldn't work. The LG launcher seems to focus more on looking smooth and fluid than being fast.

I use Nova Launcher and it's as smooth as buttered glass. Menus, settings menu, basically everything that has been LG'ed is also plenty fast

If the smooth animation is not desired, one simply has to disable the animation in the developer's options in the settings area.. Not fair to bash the G5 for animation that we actually can turn off. I'm just saying.
I'm clearly bashing the launcher, not the phone.

That doesn't fix the bloated lg ui, same as you can't get rid of touchwiz stutters on 2015 phone's... I tested the s7 and its still not as smooth as a nexus or my htc 10
