Nexus S sluggish? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Do you guys find the nexus s to be sluggish specially within the browser? I find that the nexus S struggles with web pages that have lots of pictures or media content specially with the flash plugging set to on all the time. I haven't root or anything since I bought my phone from bestbuy to try it out the second time the first time the GPS was crappy but this time around its much better anyways does performance improve with custom roms? I want to root and put a custom but I'm afraid best buy won't take my phone back since my carrier is really at&t and having a phone with no 3g sucks balls

First, Gingerbread doesn't use hardware acceleration in the web browser. Second, turn flash to On Demand..that should speed things up some.

If that is the case then why in all the previews/reviews I see the galaxy S 2 browser performance so smooth even surpassing the iPhone. Isn't the galaxy 2 running gingerbread?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App

Try Firefox or opera mobile, they're much faster when it comes to loading pages with lots of pics and vids.
I'm using opera mobile, and it's my favourite so far among all the browsers. Firefox is good but it does not support flash.
Dolphin HD 5 looks promising, but still in beta, gotta wait for the official release.

just an off topic question, why didn't you just buy an at&t nexus s? i've found some for as low as $548 shipped (assuming you paid full price @ best buy). Also since you're only using 2G on your Tmo version, at&t should be charging you regular 3G rates.

That is a modified browser apk. The Galaxy S browser is reportedly smoother than the Nexus S as well..small tradeoff for a pure Google experience and they're supposedly working on it for future release.

it is not enabled in stock gingerbread, however samsung has enabled hardware acceleratio in its browsers ( sgs1 and sgsII ).
For the time being, the only application making use of gpu acceleration is opera. (Not the mini version). you could give it a try.
cheers/

+1 on using Opera Mobile. It's nice and speedy.

Because I wanted to try out the nexus s before plugging the money for it, atleast buying it at best buy I'm able to return the phone no questions asked. Also I'm not really sold on android yet since my main phone is the iPhone 4 but I'm getting bored with it at the moment. So far android has impressed me but I'm still getting used to the interface and I do find it a bit quirky at times. In some cases the phone feels smooth and at other times it feels a bit sluggish so that's why I asked if putting a custom rom makes the phone smoother or just gives it additional functionality.

Question
When I do decided to get the at&t version of the nexus s are all GSM roms compatible with it or they have to be specific for i9020a model?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App

Mine seems to be incredibly zippy. Turning plugins to Demand mode worked wonders for me. My phone loads flash intensive sites as fast as most computers I've used, including flash videos like those on newgrounds. This is also my first Android phone, so there's a tiny chance that I'm exaggerating a little, seeing as how I'm coming from the pain that which is WinMo 6.5.

i also notice the sluggishness at times

Browser on 2.3.4 not yet GPU accelerated?

Hi all,
The browser on 2.3.4 isn't GPU accelerated yet.
Some content rich webpages make surfing impossible with that substantial lag.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
Any quick fix to make it GPU accelerated? Or is Google aware of this issue? This has been bugging me
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
You'll probably have to wait for Icecream Sandwich, in the meanwhile, use Opera.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
Maybe the issue will be resolved in a future update 2.3.x, we can hope it.
especially when there are many pictures.
Opera handles much better..
Yep, the stock browser on Nexus S is really laggy. I prefer Opera on it.
But it's interesting that the stock browser in Galaxy Tabs Gingerbread ROM is super smooth. And given the fact that it was really awful in the beginning, its a HUGE improvement. So fingers crosses that Nexus S's stock browser gets a performance upgrade before ice cream sandwitch.
Seems odd to me. I bought a smart phone over a feature phone for better web browsing.
I hate it.. I don't understand the limitations when safari on iPhones has been smooth for years on less powerful hardware.
i installed flash 10.3 and all is good with the stock browser
Heres to hoping ice cream sandwich sorts it...as will as bring proxy!

I have no problems with Opera, however does it support Flash ?
If else, i think it defeats the purpose of another web browser

Yes Opera supports flash as well, what is nice with Opera is you can enable certain flash elements within the webpage and not have to enable all of them at once

i really wanna use two browsers in my phone, because sometimes i just like to change the normal practice. opera is good to use. dolphin browser is perfect , never FC. it support flash and pinch-zoom. its amazing.
Anyone tried browsing with stock browser on xda forum here. Its almost unusable.

i tried, do you mean on the pc or mobile, on the pc i can both view xda with IE and chrome , on the mobile , i use dolphin browser because i have removed the stock browser.LOL
I'm really liking the Nexus S phone but I have to admit that the lag in the browser gets really annoying specially coming from the Iphone 4 it makes me doubt if I should keep the Nexus S or go to another android phone.

Just Horrible

Wow i came from the thunderbolt. I like the weight and screen of the Charge. But the software is just horrible!!! Another Fascinate in the making. And holly cow is the browser complete garbage. Even if i use a 3rd party it has the same problems.
I called verizon and they say its not an issue haha. I might get the incredible 2 instead.
Also 4g as of now is way overrated!! Well because works sporadically.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
I'm with you on the software, but who really uses the stock browser?
4G is definitely sporadic, but its pretty amazing when it works, IMO.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
Fascinate was a great phone for me.. This one not so much. I'm probably going to return this thing today
I just came from the Thunderbolt, for a reason. My Thunderbolt has been a nightmare since day 1. Battery issues, multiple reset issues, no data found issues. don't get me started on the Thunderbolt. The only thing I like more about the Thunderbolt is the solid build. However, the Thunderbolt software is ten times more flawed than the Droid Charge. Very happy I ditched the Thunderbolt in time to do a straight exchange for the Charge.
What exactly are your issues with the stock browser? I have yet to see a problem.
Holy smokes people getting mad cause i said software sux? Wow
The browser is non responsive while scrolling or using pinch to zoom. Browser is dealbreaker especially cause of cost of data.
As fas 4g goes yes when its working its great. But the 3g to 4g handoff is bad vice versa.
Anyone else hate the browbish colors of UI?
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
I came from the Incredible and so far the T-Bolt and Inc 2 are looking better every day. Aside from the screen and 4g (when working), I can't find anything redeeming about the phone so far. This coupled with my fears over Samsung's spotty update history are really pushing me towards returning my charge.
Install launcher pro. Its not hideous like the default launcher and it can hide the bloatware.
I put launcherpro on. I love it but its the browser thats garbage. And 3rd party browsers have same problem

I agree that all other browsers suck. On everyone android phone I had when you double tap an article it auto formats it to fit the screen. But not with the Droid Charge! POS
Opera mobile is the best for the Charge, smooth scrolling and fast but wont load all images on large heavy sites.. Thats when I use Miren
Yeah i like 3rd party browsers...... I meant that none work well on the charge. But whats killing me is..... i like the design of the charge over the thunderbolt..... Just fix the Touchwiz man......
Samsung is the worst man!!!! Id wait for a dual core 4g but im scared if i do that ill miss on the unlimited data plan.

Right, blame the user. That's the first thing they teach you when you take Human Computer Interaction courses. /s
The performance of the phone pretty much sucks it seems. My question is. . is it a hardware or software issue?
I love my charge. Battery life is great, screen is awesome, and it is fast. I agree though that the colors are terrible. Here's what I modified and mine runs smooth as silk:
1: Install a rooted Rom.
2: install titanium backup
3: remove bloatware
4: install ADW Launcher
5: install and use Opera Mobile. Seriously, its wicked fast.
Opera mobile is my favorite. But touchwiz makes the phone slow and clunky. Also anyone notice that when you hit power button to shut screen on and off its a slow shuttery fade?
A true working asop or custom Working Rom never came to fascinate will it come to charge?
Theme / skin Rom. ... I don't count these if touchwiz is what Rom is based off of.

I hate lag!

I have noticed that my phone is extra laggy since gingerbread. Does anyone have any ideas about what to do about this? I have turned off animations, live wallpapers, and am running launcher pro (which has been force closing a lot). The home screens and app drawer are occasionally laggy, but the browser is really bad. Again, this is the one area where the iphone kicks the **** out of android. Any advice would be great. Thanks.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
LG's crappy code is probably to blame. Flash a custom ROM. CM7 if you want extra features. EaglesBlood 2.3.3 if you want stock feel.
To add to that, am I the only one who thinks froyo was smoother and faster?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I was having the same issues. Just last week I rooted my phone and installed xboarder's rom based on the ota update 1.2.2. My runs smooth, and it runs cold even when I play on it for hrs at a time. My phone started randomly rebooting after the official gingerbread update from LG. Clearly LG programmers are incompetent. My phone runs much better rooted. I suggest you do the same.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I am running xboarders rooted rom. Sorry I didn't mention that. It's not like it's unusable or anything. I just hate how powerful these phones are and that they aren't greasy, buttery smooth. I just feel like android in general should run better than it is today.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
What exactly is being "laggy"? Switching homescreens? Scrolling? Opening/closing apps? Other things?
G2X CM7
Try ADW Launcher, I've found it to run better than Launcher Pro.

Try miui or cm. Anything that didn't start life with LG is completely smooth in my experience.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I like Go Launcher...it's really nice on Xboarder rom.
Lag??? There might be something wrong with your phone, cuz this is the fastest phone out hands down, my phone don't lag at all
I recently switched from Launcher Pro to Go launcher. I liked LP but development is growing stale to keep my interest.
None are really perfect but some work better the head others especially at optimizing stuff like switching screens.
I like the Lp widgets but the themes with Go.
AdW launcher has the most options but I can't settle on it for some reason. I bought the EX version.

If you think the iPhones browser is smoother than Android, you obviously haven't used the most powerful Android device to date. The SGSII which uses a hardware accelerated browser. Its browser is the fastest mobile browser I've used to date. It loads pages and flash content twice as fast as my Sensation and G2X. The phone as a whole just feels so fluent. Whether you like Samsung or not, there is no denying they know how to code and optimize Android. In my opinion, they are the best when it comes to optimizing there Android devices unlike HTC and LG.
LG will never catch Samsung in the TV market in terms of display quality and they will never catch them in the mobile market.

G2X is pretty close to Galaxy S2 in general speed but stock browser is far behind. Maybe you should try other browsers like Opera Mobile/Mini and Dolphin HD.

The next update will have hardware acceleration. Ill tell you why it hasn't been implimented yet. It is a lot harder to code a operating system for multiple hardware configurations than it is to code for just one. It takes so many more man hours to figure out how its going to work on current handsets and cuter handsets.
In the end, if Android was only on one handset, it would already have hardware acceleration.

I know it doesn't help you a whole lot but in your OP, you compaired the iPhone to Android as a whole. I felt the need to tell you that it is not smoother than Android as a whole because there is a Android handset that bests it when it comes to overall smoothness, not only in the UI but also in the browser. If you would have said, "this is one area where the iPhone beats the G2X" instead of "this is one area where the iPhone beats Android". I wouldn't have brought it up.
Get it?

[Q] Web Browsing/Camera Issues?

I'm about to go pick one up at the AT&T store and had 3 questions before I do..
1) I heard that the Web Browsing isn't smooth... like when you double-tap to zoom in or pinch-to-zoom it freezes and loads or whatever.
2) When you are recording video; it has terrible frame rate when you are moving the camera around...
3) Is this phone worth it?
This is my first ever android phone, came from and iPhone 4 and I gotta say, its AMAZING! Well worth the money, and I haven't had any of the issues you mentioned.
I say get it!

I have taken several videos and haven't had any framerate drops. That's not saying it doesn't happen, but it hasn't happened to me yet.
The stock browser does have some jerkiness due to the text reflow. Some don't like the reflow, but I absolutely love it. If this bothers you, you can use another browser. Chrome Beta and Opera work great on this phone.

Just my personal experience, but I find the Chrome browser to perform poorly on this phone, compared to Opera Mini or the stock browser. I was running a vanilla ICS rom on my DHD and Chrome worked great on that.
That aside, I do find some weird jitters in the stock browser. Honestly though, it's not that bad. Usually only has a noticeable effect if I try to zoom on a page while it's still loading. Also, zooming in on plain text files (like game walkthroughs) seems to lose your place in the file, even though the text doesn't get reflowed.

Best Browser for 4.4 (small, and fast)

Im just wondering what youre all using for a browser, aside from Chrome. Coming from my n4, i had the aosp installed and it worked amazingly. Obviously now, there are others that should work better.
Im finding chrome is eating my battery, and i would prefer something light, that allows for gmail bookmark syncing still.
Note, im all stock, no root.
Thanks in advance for any comments!

Do you find chrome drains the battery more than other smaller browsers?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4
I can't really speak to that, as I haven't really tried any others since I bought my GNexus a year and a half ago. I will say that Chrome seems to drain my Nexus 5 battery more so than my Moto X or Nexus 4. By that, I mean it shows up as a higher percentage in my battery stats than it used to on the other phones. So that could just be the Nexus 5 being more efficient in other areas, lowering the proportionate battery usage of other apps. Regardless, Chrome syncs seamlessly between my devices, is the best browser on my PC, and comes as the default on my N5 and N7, so I use it.

I've tried pretty much every browser out and nothing beats xscope pro. I love the instant forward and back navigation (sorta like IOS7 has). No loading again like all the other browsers for android.
