I know it sounds silly, with such a big screen, why would we want a UI that consumes so much of the screen? Well I think it would just be kinda neat to see it on the Xoom, who knows maybe people like it more? Is there any possibility of this happening? I have EOS 3 126 and it is running just fine.
Here's some more info for you, even though I don't have the answer.
Nexus runs phone UI, Xoom runs tablet UI.
Nexus can be tweaked to run tablet. My guess is its a build.prop tweak.
See that's what I thought cause that's how you get the Nexus 7 to run the tablet interface, so I don't know of the same thing can be done with a simple build.prop mod.

To get the phone UI, you need to change the DPI I believe. I tried it and my XOOM didn't boot, had to reflash my ROM. Probably not a good idea.
Sent from my Xoom using xda premium
Same, I was messing with the DPI but after I did that it just wouldn't boot, which sucks.

I wish I had a link to the article so this wasn't such an anecdotal response but I'm 99% sure that I read the ui the nexus uses is actually an in between mode for 7ish inch screens. The thing I read said there was a phone, a 7" and a 10" mode. The only reason I bring this up is that I would be interested in seeing that other view too just to compare so if you find anything else on the subject please let us know.
Edit: http://liliputing.com/2012/07/how-to-change-the-nexus-7-user-interface-to-full-tablet-mode.html
That article has a little more detail on the three ui modes and lists the dpi of the nexus 7 (213). As well as what range to set it to to get it to display the full tablet mode. This might be a good place to start from to try to get the xoom to go down to the middle size ui mode

Not really, in landscape the notification tray pulls down covering only the left of the screen and in portrait it only covers the middle of the screen.

I made a universal mod for this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1898907
I really like this on my Xoom, it makes the screen a little weirder to type on but that's only in the beginning, after a while you get used to it. It feels a little slow when dragging the notification window down but it feels faster in some other areas like scrolling through my pages of apps in the app drawer.

Sorry to double post, but I have to say, your universal mod is SO much better on my Wingray. Much faster, the bar is a lot bigger so the soft keys aren't so small and difficult to tap and it is just overall less glitchy, with the other mod, my Xoom restarted every time I held the power button, with yours everything works just fine. Thank you so much.
Oh and the keyboard is so much bigger and better to type on, it seems the other one makes the screen size feel smaller so it all is very much wasting screen real estate.

Is it just me or is really hard getting the carousel to work. Everytime I try messing around my phone to get the carousel effect I end up selecting something. For the life of me I just cant get the dam carousel effect. Anyone else having this issue?
I don't own it yet, but on all 4 of the sensation's i've had my hands on i thought it was pretty simple. In only two swipes you should be able to get that thing spinning. Oddly enough, I don't really know it adds any real functionality but it does look cool. Are you experiencing any other oddities with your touchscreen or is that it? Just to make sure that it works try swiping across two blank screens and see if you can do it. Two quick little swipes is all it takes.

Having a 2 blank screens may help as I have widgets on all my screens although I shouldnt have any issues to begin with. I have notice in a few evo 3d reviews on youtube that its a lot more fluent and talking about touch response ive notice that sometimes I have to press the power button to be able to select some widgets or icon shortcuts I have on my home screens. I saw those EVO 3D comparison videos too and was a little shocked. The reason I was shocked is because the sensations that I tried out didn't have any of that lag in the videos. I've also read about some people here saying they have homescreen lag, and others that don't. Have you tried a factory reset? I should have mentioned the devices I tried had all 7 screen loaded with junk, and I was still able to spin the carousel with two swipes.

Mine is really smooth. It stutters once in awhile, but it's no big deal.
Just exchanged mine at Walmart for the same reason... It didn't recognize fast swipes... Try pulling the notification bar up and down real fast and see if it lets it go.... The new phone I got works fine for now.

If you want to make the phone more like the iPhone, why not just get an iPhone in the first place?
I agree with the op. After getting a text and setting it down flat on a table it goes into landscape mode. You have to pick up the phone tilt it verticle before you can read it. Annoying! Samething goes when pulling it from your pocket though not as bad.
That's one thing the iPhone got right.

Amen... it's snappier than an Iphone, the screen is bigger, Widgets, replaceable battery, not controlled by Steve jobs, almost COMPLETELY customizable... shall I go on?
I got to tell you. I didn't even notice any issue with the screen rotation... even as I go through 360 degrees(which the iPhone doesn't do). Barely an issue at all, and if that is all you are complaining about, well I guess it could be worse...
Sent from my butt using XDA Premium App
My last phone (which was not an Iphone) had multiple choices for screen rotation graphics. The pretty rotation (which is not unique to an iphone or invented by Bill Gates) just delays the actual rotated screen.
The G2X got it right to just snap the screen in the rotated position. How ever, the issue when it goes to sleep and comes back in portrait when it was in landscape is annoying and should be fixed. Maybe some one that that was a good thing.
I actually love my g2x and would never downgrade to an iPhone but I just noticed there smooth transition into the different landscape and portrait modes you can see the transition instead of it just switching so fast

You don't have to tilt it back to portrait, you can simply press the capacitive back button. I agree to an extent overall though a little glamour would be nice, I reneger the G1 had a special option where it had a fancy rotation animation deal. Either way it is not even close to something we actually need and I'm fine with what it is now.

we are supposed to get hardware acceleration enabled in icecream sandwich.
I agree with the OP about the rotation transition not being aesthetically pleasing, but at the same time think about all the important pros we have over other operating systems (mainly Apple's iOS). We have Widgets, full adobe flash, we almost have the ability to fully customize all aspects of our phone without even rooting it! etc... etc... We even have the largest dev support (I'm referring to Android as a whole) out of any OS developing community. Unfortunately we can't have all the pros that we want, but we do have a good majority of pros vs the cons.

this is something the windows phones actually do really really well
Yea I have a Transformer running 3.1 and the rotation animations are nice.
I have a pretty good method for using the rotation aspect on the G2x and it requires CM7. I Disable rotation but keep a notification button in the pull down for rotation toggling. This way it always stays in portrait unless I toggle orientation on, then I can rotate it for a specific website or video, then toggle it off.
I had an iPad 1 and 2... and they would rotate all crazy ways if you sat them flat too. Best option is that if you don't want it to rotate randomly, then just disable it completely.
Here's an idea. How about only allow rotating when keyboard is up? That would be sweet.
However I don't use landscape keyboard layout. But good idea. Maybe get a keyboard developer to include that as an option.
i know that in CM7.1 you are able to decide how you want your layout. you can have it landscape, portrait , or the way it is set up now. pretty cool.

I am aware that I can choose different layout but as I get used to it I find it more easier to use. My passwords consists of various numbers and letters and I find it easier to type as the numeric keys are present on the same screen
On Swiftkey X I decreased the long press to 250ms from 500ms so I just have to hold the letter for a split second to get a number. It's pretty fast.

Okay, this may be dumb but I am wondering if I am the only one thinking about this. Currently, I am rocking the latest ICS version of venom and beast mode kernel. At first I though sleep to wake was really cool. Recently, however, I have come to depend on it. It is so awesome to be able to wake my phone from the front (like an iDevice) and now I even am starting to hate that I can't sleep my iPad from the front the way I can with my HOX.
Typically I just enjoy my phone and at the same time look forward to future hardware improvements. Sadly, however, it looks like HTC and others are going with on screen keys in increasing numbers. Its sad to think that my next upgrade may result in a loss of functionality (and maybe even less usable screen real-estate.)
Am I the only one?

You are definitely not the only one. I completely depend on s2w. I used a JB sense ROM the other day and I don't know how many times I tried to use s2w. Thanks for enlightening me! I still prefer the screen of my HOX to my buddy's N4 but it's nice to know that s2w is possible!
:good:
I felt the same way about screen real estate, but I realized its a matter of perspective. Look at your phone. Look at the hardware keys. Now imagine your screen extending to where they are. Your screen is bigger. Now imagine that when you need them, those buttons can pop up, and when you don't need them they can go away.
Its a glass half empty or glass half full issue. My buddy says "depends on whether you are drinking or filling the glass" I say true. You need to ask yourself if you want the overall phone to be bigger or not because that's really the only thing that is changing. A 3.7" screen with hw buttons could be 4" without. Or conversely a 4" screen would end up 3.7" if you put those buttons under it and kept the phone the same size overall.

Opposite for me, the only thing I liked about my gnex was the on screen keys and being able to remap them to what I want and change their color etc.

Mine was pretty bad, but after doing a factory reset twice now, I can report my lag is not bad.
I see a SLIGHT stutter in the opening/closing animations of apps. Definitely lag in the app drawer. The lockscreen is probably where I see the most unresponsiveness/lag. You hit the power button and you have to wait a second, then its fine. The animation from the lock screen to the home screen almost always stutters. The default browser seems about 95% zippy and responsive. Pinch to zoom stutters occasionally. But touchwiz seems very smooth and fluid for the most part. The camera takes perfect pictures. There also is some shutter lag, but not bad.
Overall, the phone is nice, but I am going to be calling Samsung/AT&T and do whatever it takes for them to fix this. This is unacceptable. I noticed that the apps I put on my phone, the more the lag grew. I disabled a lot of the AT&T bloatware and Samsung garbage. Right when I performed a factory reset my phone had ZERO lag. So those getting new devices are probably experiencing what I did. The lag slowly came back, but not as bad as before.
My only reason for not returning it is, once this device gets roms, its going to be a beast. But right now, its performing like a 2011 device.

To be honest I kind of agree with the OP. I've read many lag threads but nobody mentions what's lagging. The only lag I've noticed on mine is the gallery is super slow. At least 3 seconds to load from home. I haven't tried quickpic yet though. Mostly because I'm finding air view useful.

I deleted about 97 apps / processes and have another 4 frozen, turned animations to zero, forced enable GPU rendering, installed Nova launcher, and am running Trickster..
The entire phone is lightning fast now with the exception of the keyboard opening and closing. The Samsung KB is unusable.. Swiftkey works much better but it does still have very minor lag.
The steps I have taken are insane and should not have to be done on a phone carrying these specs. This phone should flat out scream right out of the box.
