why is this happening?? - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i have been unable to get to the bottom of it. really could use some help. this tablet is running cm10.2. only sees 4.59 of memory.... claims to be the total onboard memory. makes no sense to me. if cm10 takes up 3.5 then the total should still be 8 with system files taking up 3+gb. but this is not the case...
thank you in advance!!!

Seriously? Thread #3 with the same question?

For crying out loud... I gave you the answer. You didn't like it, but that's your problem. I also asked you (and anyone else) to provide any proof of more internal storage on the 8GB model. No response, as expected. If you somehow remember getting full 8GB on stock ROM, as opposed to what you are getting now, you were hallucinating.
Let me try again. There is TOTAL storage, which is 8GB. And there is USER-ACCESSIBLE storage, which is much less. Unless you go really hardcore, and start playing with non-standard partition sizes on your tablet, you will NOT get more than approx. 4.5GB available to you. It's a fact of life. Get over it. To better understand what I mean, open terminal console, and type "df" (without quotes). Check the total size of your internal sdcard partition (on stock, it's /storage/sdcard0, on CM it may be something else). This is the definitive answer to your question.

Me too dude, The box of the tablet, and on the back part says that is 8GB but is only 4,59GB. Why?
Because the storage divides in two the first part is for the system app, and system process. The other part is for your apps or other things.
This is not a problem it is normal on any device. Why do you need many storage?
Try to use FolderMount or Link2SD for your apps. FolderMount helped me a lot for the big games.

okay i am the type of cat who is able to admit when I am wrong... i am wrong!!! I am sorry about that because I could swear that when i had the stock rom in that it showed 8gb TOTAL memory but obviously less available memory. since I posted this thread I went back to stock just to prove myself wrong and again, you were right. it only shows 4.59gb which really is a surprise to me.
just so you know it's not that i didnt like your answer, its just that I really believed that i saw 8gb total. my bad dude.
now, if i am able to get a memory swap with cm10.2 working Ill be satisfied. any ideas?

Sorry, can't help you with this, because I am not a CM user, and, most importantly, I never used any storage swapping methods. One think I did try in the past was to use some app to mount specific folder(s) on external SD to present them as if it was an internal storage. Although it doesnt completely swap your int and ext storage, it works just fine in most cases (with some limitations). Basically, this is what Folder Mount is about (already suggested to you). I used DirectoryBind, which has long been abandoned, and doesn't work on newer Android versions. Many people are happy with Folder Mount, but you can also find other alternatives, like Super Mount from Lidroid (it's free, unlike Folder Mount). Look them up on Play Store, it might be a workable solution for you...

APPS2SD For Beginners

Hello everyone. I am branching over to XDA from Androidforums in need of more guidance.
First, let me say I HAVE searched for instruction to my post, I HAVE NOT been successful with any of my reading. I just closed three separate windows of firefox with a total of near 75 tabs, all related to apps2sd, but none giving the specific instruction I need.
If in reading this you can think of another thread that has my answer, PLEASE post it for me. -much appreciated
If not, please read and help if possible. (I am listing my set up in case it is user specific)
CDMA Hero
Rooted
RA-Heroc v1.2.3 Recovery
Fresh 1.0 Rom
My goal is to initialize and complete the process of setting up apps2sd system today.
I would like to sucessfully have this running and I cannot find any specific guide on "how to". I have however found MANY that speak about it after the fact.
So, please someone tell me what I need to do to set this up. I want apps off device and to have a "swap space (???)" set up.
Can I do this now (after having flashed custom rom) or do I need to start all over, beginning with apps2sd process first and then flashing Rom.
Detailed instructions much appreciated, or a link to appropriate thread.
THANKS!! Rep points for you!!
You just need to partition your SD card as ext2+FAT+swap and reboot. That's all.
This will erase your SD card, so be sure you copy everything off first.
Please edit the title of this thread and take out the [ROM] prefix. This is not a ROM and the title is misleading.
Thanks.
EDIT: Does FreshROM 1.0 have apps2sd? I thought it only supported it if you had it on there previously.
EDIT: Never mind, I just saw this in the FreshROM apps2sd rant post - "Now with all of THAT said -- this rom officially has and supports Apps2SD. "

Are you serious, it's that simple?!!! argggh.
Okay, but with a bit more detail... I am rebooting into recovery mode and then doing this? Can you explain with just a tad more detail? thanks!
Haha there is no more detail. Just format your SD card with that option. WAM BAM DONE
I swear I'm not a cop! I just made the same mistake once.
I tried looking for apps2sd info a while back and ran into your same dilemma. I ended up using Modaco's ROM (actually, I used the UNOFFICIAL updated modaco made by obelisk79) because it already had it on there.

Right in the recovery options there's one that says something like "Format SD card: Ext2+FAT+swap" or something like that. Choose that, then reboot.
I thought Fresh 1.0 had AppsToSD built-in. If it doesn't, this won't actually accomplish anything.

Yeah I found somewhere that it would obviously erase the card data. I am really trying to figure out if the apps2sd is the same as "swap" since I keep finding bad things about swapping.

No, it's not the same as using swap. It works fine, don't worry about it.
AppsToSD works best with a Class 6 card, since the class 6 cards are faster.

Yes, I'm using it. I have read flipzmode's rant about why he doesn't like Apps2SD. I have had no problems with it.
When I ran it with the modaco/obelisk79 ROM it seemed to keep the phone relatively speedy, even with a ton of apps installed. I am using FreshROM 1.0 now and I ended up uninstalling a few apps because of lag.
EDIT: I am not inferring that FreshROM is any slower. I think the problem is on my end! BTW, I am using a 16G class 6 card.

Unfortunately I think mine is not a class 6, it's just an 8gig standard micro sd. (PNY brand).
Anyway, so i went in recov. mode and formatted to the ext/fat/swap partition. I reloaded my card with previous data. Is that all I need to do? is there no setting I need to monitor or adjust?
and also, will my current apps get pushed to the sd or is there a process I should follow to move them to the sd?
I just did this and it pushed my apps from what I can tell. My internal storage number went from around 90mb used to 52mb. Now my real question is if I wanted to undo this.. what kind of options/headache am I looking at ?

Current apps should get pushed to the SD. To make sure it's working, pull up an adb shell and do:
cd /data/app
pwd
You should see "/system/sd/app" spit back at you.

Well yeah you would certainly have to reformat. But in addition to that you would need to re-install your apps, since they would have been removed from the card.
I was reading somewhere that you can change a setting to zero which causes the hero to pull the apps back to internal storage, leaving you not needing to re-install. cAn't remember where setting is or where i found it...

I currently have the partitions for /system and /data set as 200Mb. i am going to try and add on more for /cache, but I am looking into making it as small as possible, since many would not be installing a lot of extra apps. It could be as small as 330Mb total.
so will i need that APPS2SD thing for this?

sweet..your the man..cant wait!
One important thing I would like to propose here for the developer is a "standard" location somewhere on the SD card which would keep all the common data such as contacts, recent sms, call logs, etc. so that multi boot environment can share data without loss or duplicates.
In other words, boot to CM6 tonight and in two days when you decide to go back to stock ROM, all your sms, phone calls and such are picked up right where you left them in CM6 and vice versa.
Other than that, this sounds like an awesome thing. Can't wait to have the phone boot one ROM for Monday, another for Tuesday, and another for Wednesday and another...

Not really possible. Different rom versions (2.1 vs 2.2) store the data in different formats. You'll have to rely on something like titanium backup to handle it.
How exactly is the dual-booting done? Does the batch script need to be controlled from the computer, or have you made a custom bootloader for on-the-fly switching?

very good question
It's pretty simple if you have ever extracted the ramdisk and kernel from boot.img
The recovery has not been modified and the only time a computer is used is to setup the ROM the first time. You have to modify the boot.img from the ROM you want to installed on the sdcard. Once it has been changed, all you do is flash the boot.img of the ROM you want. I have mine setup where everything for the ROM is stored on the sdcard (/system, /data, and /cache) but have not been able to test out cache yet.
The reason for a non modified recovery is so that it can be done on any android phone.
I may put up a way to do this while I look into the script.
that is awesome you got so far so quick. i was hoping the squashfs tip would help you out. cant wait to see what approach you took.

Post #2 has steps on setting up the sdcard
Just wondering but whats the plus side to this as opposed to just having different nandriod backups to flash between? I know it would be faster to boot but imo that's not woth all the partitioning of the sd card and what not. Now if it allowed you to run Windows Mobile roms from the SD then that would be awesome. I had a dual boot on my old HTC diamond and thats where I first discovered Android

is there a rom where i can use internal storage

Well, i have 2gb sd card with the phone and its not enough. i have another 3 gb which im not using but i cant use it. Any way to get it or use it?

No, and you cannot use the internal storage for anything other than apps. It was never intended for anything other than that. it is not like a Samsung device which has internal SDcard storage space. And no there is not a way to format or in anyway make it work for anything other than app storage and installation.
This has been covered many times, please do a search before posting next time.

Yeah, that is the issue, it is really not a storage space like /sdcard is.
It is really not usable in a normal sense, and 4GB of app space and data is a total waste.
And from what I have seen in the HK ICS rom, it is still not the same as having an internal SDcard space like Samsung and other manufacturers do.
Could you symlink a folder on it to /sdcard-ext or something.

I had slight issue with something else but fixed it earlier today, here is exactly what I did; formatted ext sd card to fat32,
then did a full wipe using philz recovery (option which says wipe to install new rom),
then formatted internal memory, /sdcard
Then pressed full wipe for new rom AGAIN,
Then flashed rom (am running HD ROM 7.0),
Then flashed script.

Honestly, I won't go back cuz if your fond of gameloft games or games really big on MBs you actually can save some memory. I have 7 gameloft games installed which are about 1 gb each and they have taken no more than 0.50 from the internal(all together). All games with Cache will work that way cuz the cache can go in the external (e.x with cache http://android.mob.org/game/dungeon_hunter_4.html ) if you scroll down where it writes download the last one is the cache, its close to 1GB. But, it still isn't fully working,as small games, which in my opinion happen to be the best for tablets don't store there. In the future i might change too, i get no errors or anything so far. Maybe a new script or something comes by then, that is actually working? :fingers-crossed:
If you find something better, tell me. I'm not so pleased with this script either

Once again, thank you! I'll be really busy these months but I'll read it right away when I find time.I appreciate it :good:

Edit internal memory to add to phone storage?

Is it possible to increase my (rooted 4.4.4) fake galaxy note 4's phone storage, by taking some storage from the internal memory? Is it possible via root, or ROM at all? I don't want apps2sd or anything like that.
I think the phone storage is smaller than listed in settings, and I can get less than a mb of storage on it. No downloads go to my SD card, even when the settings are right.
By increasing my phone storage, I can at least see what's wrong.
Thanks

You'll need to change the system partition, and I wouldn't recommend doing it..

Well, upon lengthy consideration, I think I still want to. Can you tell me a little more? Can I do this with the stock ROM? Where would I find a guide to do this?

I never actually did this, and it seems to me that this is device specific meaning that you will not find a universal method how to change system partition.
I am not by a pc now, so I can't make really any research.

Thanks, but xposed won't install. I think lots of stuff uses the phone storage. When deleting everything possible, I can get about 1mb space. I think the storage is much less than stated.
Sent from my Galaxy Note 4........FAKE! Admit it, you thought I had money for a second didn't you?

OK bro I think you have a option that is creat partition on SD card & use link2sd app to free internal memory but remember I am not responsible for kind of damage, try this at ur own risk...
For procedure check this post.....

This is complete guide for partition sdcard & use link2sd app.
Note- before do anything take backup sdcard.
Good luck bro..

Thanks. I didn't really want to do this, but thinking about it more, its probably the best solution. I will try when I next have time to play around with my phone.
