Good morning fellow Androidians! (i like the sound of that )
This has been a VERY exciting and adventurous morning for me! I have been researching the Android 3.0 Honeycomb SDK release built for the Motorola Xoom, and I have spend all this morning installing it to my Nook! To my surprise, it worked well, actually, AMAZINGLY well.
After the install, I had the Android Market, Google Maps, YouTube, and with logging in to my google account, I could download ANY android app that a normal Android device could.
And here is the best part.
I have ADOBE FLASH 10.2 working! Yes! Just downloaded the .APK in the browser, and voila, installed and working great!
Now some may ask, how did you install it? Rosenbaa29, HOW did you do it? Actually, it was fairily difficult, but if my father and I could do it, anyone can
These are the directions written by Will Shanklin, all credit goes to him.
***NOTE: HONEYCOMB CAN NOW BE INSTALLED TO YOUR NOOK'S INTERNAL MEMORY TOO. SEE THIS THREAD FOR INSTRUCTIONS. THIS THREAD IS FOR SD CARD INSTALLATION.
* UPDATE 2/8 MORE FIXES:
(quoted from dev's thread)
"v04 - 02/07/2011
increased touchscreen sensitivity and made touchscreen more usable close to the borders (kernel change)
fixed heap size issue to get much more programs running (e.g. nook app, kindle app, etc.)"
Those updating from the previous version, see updating section at bottom
Here's how to get Honeycomb running on your Nook Color right now.
Credit to dev deeper-blue (Rafael Brune) whose thread can be found here: Android 3.0 Honeycomb Image - xda-developers
1. Download the image:
nookhoney04.img.zip
Torrent: nookhoney04.img.zip (might be faster than either of the above options - of course you'll need a torrent client like bittorrent)
Unzip the image onto your computer using WinRAR on PC, or or Stuffit Expander (on Mac).
2. Get an SD card, at least 4GB.
Some had problems with 4GB cards, others said the image stalled burning, but then it worked anyway. Worth a try, but larger than 4GB, you should be fine.
3A. PC Users:
- The usual program for this, Win32DiskImager, isn't working with this large file. So download WinImage, and under 'Disk' choose "Restore Virtual Image to Physical Drive." Change the files shown at the bottom to "all files" and select the file.
On Mac:
3B. Mac Users:
- Open a terminal window
-Find which drive the sd card is mapped to: type in the terminal this:
diskutil list
- Be very careful to identify the SD card and not your hard disk. Be VERY careful.
- Now unmount that drive typing this:
diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk#
(My computer is was disk2 replace # with your number. Do NOT use the disk#s)
The computer should say: Unmount of all volumes on disk was successful
Type:
dd if=nookhoney04.img of=/dev/rdisk# bs=1m
Everything needed should copy right over to the card.
4. Power down your Nook, insert the microSD card, and it should boot into Honeycomb!!!!!!
Installing the Android Market on the Nook Color running Honeycomb:
1. Download this version of the Market (2.2.11).
2. Download GoogleServicesFramework.apk.
3. Place the files in your adb tools folder (or platform-tools on the newer version - wherever adb.exe is)
4. Open a command prompt in that folder, and issue the following commands:
adb shell mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 /system
adb push Vending.apk system/app/Vending.apk
adb push GoogleServicesFramework.apk system/app/GoogleServicesFramework.apk
adb shell
cd system/app
chmod 6755 Vending.apk
chmod 6755 GoogleServicesFramework.apk
exit
adb reboot
Then go to apps, open the market, sign in. If the Market won't open at first, reboot and try again.
**Overclock instructions greyed out until new kernels are confirmed working with the new update**
Overclocking Honeycomb to 1.1GHz (might work, might not, might work then stop working):
Credit goes to dalingrin, his thread: [FYI]http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925451
1. Download uImage (extract the uImage file somewhere on your computer)
2. If you haven't yet booted Honeycomb, skip to 4. If you've already booted it, see 3.
3. With the Nook booted into Honeycomb, connect via adb, and issue the following:
adb shell
cd data/dalvik-cache
rm *
exit
. . . and then power off your Nook immediately, without opening any apps. It's probably best to power it off with a hard reset (hold power down 10-15 seconds).
4. Remove the SD card, and place it back in an SD reader.
5. Open the folder (it should say boot) and make a copy of that uImage file on your computer. If you discover later on that the overclocking kernel doesn't work, simply replace the new one with this original that you're backing up now.
6. Now replace it with the uImage folder you downloaded earlier. Reboot, and enjoy the overclock!
Updating
To preserve much of your data, first, you'll need to root. See our stickied root Honeycomb on the Nook thread. This has nothing to do with whether the Barnes & Noble ROM is rooted or not on your Nook.
Now, while still on version 2, do a complete backup with Titanium backup.
Then, open a command prompt in your adb folder and enter the following:
adb shell mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk1 /
adb pull sdcard/[path to your adb folder, such as c:/sdk/tools/]/honeysd
Then update to v2 by the procedure above. Then root again by the procedure in that thread.
Now open another command prompt in the same place:
adb shell mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk1 /
adb push [path to your adb folder]/honeysd/ sdcard/
Then restore apps in Titanium Backup (one at a time, starting with your most essential apps is recommended. This is still an early build and some apps can causes crashes).
You should have all your apps now!
Features currently not working:
- not much to mention - lets play with this new update and see . . .
***note that you may need to turn your screen off/on once after every reboot to avoid touchscreen lag (much like w/Nookie Froyo)"
Have a great week, and if you have ANY questions or comments, let us know on this forum!
Wow great effort! A few more links to where we can download these files would help.
Although... I don't have a nook Tablet so do you think this will work on other tablets too?
Specifically the elonex e-touch 10
http://direct.asda.com/Elonex-eTouc...-Music-10gb-storage/000505981,default,pd.html
The specs are;
1024X600 Pixel screen
Android 2.1 (Upgrade to 2.2 out)
1GHZ Processor
256MB Ram
The ram seems a little low but seen as its cough *cheap*.... I couldn't say no!

You definitely have the specs to support honeycomb. Currently, the eTouch 10 runs android 2.1, but I will definitely figure out how to get a 3.0 release for it.
The Nook is a total iPad alternative, especially if we get an extremely stable android release for it, even if its only Gingerbread. How long have you had your tablet? What do you think about it?

I've ordered and paid for it, I just need to pick it up in the store. Its supposed to be delivered in 3-5 days. So Tuesday hopefully.
Theres actually a fair amount of folks that have bought it.
http://www.androidtablets.net/forum/zenithink-zt180-10-generation-1/v
Unfortunately there is no app/rom development for it due to lack of support (Maybe as its just been released in the UK). I've been looking at support for similar spec tablets (Galaxy Tab ect) its just a question of whether it'll all work.
If we can get honeycomb working for it, it could be huge on XDA. A £129 tablet that has Honeycomb... yes please! And seen as your from the US it should come to Wal-Mart at some point (ASDA is owned by Wal-Mart).
Anyway, yeah any support would be greatly appreciated.

ok.... question from a lurker here....first of all, as a newer owner of Android OS, (an unREVOKED, rooted Evo), I'm trying to help my dad with his new "gadget"... it's a 7" tablet, google iRobot that came from China and has andoid 3.0 Even when he attempts to download from the installed App Market (not a true version of Android Market it seems...) most apps tell him there is no phone associated with the account... AppBrain doesn't work either.... any method or resource that would be useful to him? Most of the icons on the device mimic Apple's, such as the Safari, Settings, etc...
He's 60... trying to download card games, etc lol... any and all help would be appreciated!

The thing is, you need to log into market with your google information on an android phone to activate "android market" on your specified google account, then you can use that google email to access any android features that may later come. Does that make sense?

The thing is for me, I already have my droid pro on verizon, so I can access the market on my nook as long as I use the same email that I used on my droid. So see if you can use a friends phone. You would need to back it up, then do a settings_>privacy->factory reset on it. Then when it starts back up, enter your gmail account information and download at least one app from the market. then he can do the factory reset on it and put on his old email and information again. Let me knwo if that is a possibility for you.

Please choose one of the following 2 methods!
USB Control Script (1st method):
DEBIAN_CONTROL - see bottom of post for script
MicroSD Control Script (2nd method):
DEBIAN_CONTROL_SD - see bottom of post for script
You will need this image unless you plan to put your own together.
Debian Squeeze Image:
http://www.multiupload.com/C9RDP4ODZX
The image can be flashed to your usb drive or sd/microsd card with dd on your fullsize computer. Please be aware that I have not tested running from a fullsize SD card.
dd if=~/nameofimage.img of=/dev/nameofdevice
Operation
1.Run the control script to start the chroot. You can run console commands here. The screen command is useful here also.
2.Run ./vnc to start the vnc server which itself starts xorg and the window manager. The script is not totally failure proof.
3.Login with your vnc client. I use Android vnc viewer. Password is testing.
http://code.google.com/p/android-vnc-viewer/
Window Managers
lxde
icewm
xfce
check /.vnc/ for the xstartup scripts. just rename the one for the window manager you want to xstartup and reboot your chroot.
BUG:
chroot will not cleanly unmount
SOLUTION:
keep chroot running in the background - it should only take up memory not cpu

FAQ POST:
Does Flash work?
I am not holding out much hope for flash on ARMv6. It seems like a long complicating debugging process for what is in the end slow and buggy results.
The browser is slow?
Right now, it seems that javascript performance on the stock browser is much worse than I expected. For now, try turning off javascript and images if you use the stock browser.
Stock ROM?
The link for the device on Craig's website is:
http://www.craigelectronics.com/site/pdetails.php?id=314
You can download the completely stock ROM from here.
ADB?
I tried ADB with a male to male USB that I had laying around with no success with a GNU/Linux PC and a different Windows PC. All 3 USB ports were tested. But you can connect with adb connect ipofdevice over your LAN if you see what address your router is giving the device. Or of course you could set a static IP.
Minimize application?
You can return to the home screen at any time by pushing fn+home.
Sources for the binaries you have added?
Try the sources link on the first post. The zirco apk is unchanged and their website is here: http://code.google.com/p/zirco-browser/ . The Gapps are straight from my VM LG Optimus V.
Mount an ext2/3 formatted USB drive?
mount -t ext3 /dev/block/sda1 /mountpointofyourchoice
Enter key not working in some terminal applications?
Use Ctrl-m instead.

Just wanted to thank you for taking this project on. This device could be much more and for the price you just can't go wrong. Good luck and I'm off to root.
Is it possible to boot or load a stripped version of windows xp from a thumb drive? and did you try all the usb ports with that cable?
wgallt:
The root situation on the ROM and my current devices in general is a little complicated. For this device in general, it comes ADB rooted out of the box. I have added another su to the rom that will allow console root. Unfortunately, because it is an older version of su, it does not seem to work with Superuser.apk. I am waiting on a response in the Q/A forum on errors I am getting compiling the current version of su. I have been able to compile Superuser.apk successfully but it is not much use without the current version of su. I am of course preferring to include source and source-compiled binaries wherever possible in the ROM.
celltimemb:
Market added.
See above for ADB info.
Regular Windows XP does not run natively on ARM CPUs. From Craig's website it appears that they have an identical model running Windows CE. You should look into any running a lightweight GNU/Linux chroot with QEMU or VMWare and then booting something like Windows 98. I would be amazed to see it, especially with the limited RAM we have available.
I am releasing a new ROM with integrated Google Apps and a open source browser named Zirco which seems to run very well. Compare the stock browser with stock settings to Zirco on forum.xda-developers.com to know what I mean. Be sure to read the README.
This ROM may end up becoming a different series entirely. One with the market and one without.
I have updated the first post with the links and README.
can u add live wallpaper support in a future rom?
If I get around to compiling AOSP that should come with live wallpaper.
I tried copying the live wallpaper apk and what I thought to be their dependencies from my Optimus V. Unfortunately, the switcher crashed and the logcat just said the wallpaper switcher would not start.
lot of apps run real slow and lag i tried some games like that bird game where you flick it to the target, i get like 1 frame every 2-3 seconds for the animation, soo slow, they claim 800 MHZ processor but damn this thing is soooo slow. even the fake chinese android phones the star A5000 runs and performs better than this.
2d games lag real bad so I dont see any 3d gaming at all on this machine. unless some elite hacker and coder can make a fully optimized rom for this thing.
Thanks for reporting your results. I have had mixed successes with games. The drag racing game works decent and another rice-can type racing game worked ok too. But many games instantly crash also. The live wallpaper would probably run slow anyway.
Web browsing
Remote administration
Network administration
Note taking
Light media playback
VOIP
Chat
These are all the uses I can think of it for the moment. It gives me an idea to include a note taking application at some point.
the new browser force closes on me, and does this thing have flash support, I have a gut feeling this is an x86 formfactor which is why it runs so slow.
Please read the README and in general read the previous posts carefully.
This is definitely not an x86. It if were, it would actually be faster.
One of these pages is the page for the CPU:
http://www.wondermedia.com.tw/en/products/platform/soc/wm8650/index.jsp
http://www.wondermedia.com.tw/en/products/platform/soc/wm8750/index.jsp
Lol on the craig website product page they show windows on it instead of android.
http://www.craigelectronics.com/site/pdetails.php?id=314
This thing can supposedly handle 3d gaming so i cant undertsand why most games including 2d games run so slow.
---------- Post added at 09:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:57 PM ----------
Is it possible to put Windows CE 6 on this from the craig CLP280 model?
Merry Christmas!
After a productive night the R3 ROM is out.
The changelog and sofware list highlights:
removed zirco integration
init.rc changes to support zirco
holiday wallpaper
added OPTIONAL on localdisk with:
yaxim jabber client - open source
zirco browser - open source
jota text editor - open source
su - compiled from source
superuser - compiled from source
For security reasons, you should probably choose allow once instead of always for su.
As usual be sure to read the README.
Just got a Craig Netbook. I hate the Android stock install. I found this thread and it seems like the answer I'm looking for. If I understand you correctly, the description you give for the Rom"
"OVERVIEW
This is a modified version of the official firmware. The focus is on removal of bloatware and unneeded proprietary software."
is the first hack? (clp281_firmware2.2_HACK9_R1)
Also, if I do this and screw it up, can I reinstall the original Android from the Craig website?
Thanks.
Yes that is the first release. I would recommend trying the third as it is the latest version as of this post.
Yes you can reinstall the original firmware.
Thanks Jason.
Hey Jason. I just installed it. Had to download a new adobe flash player to watch a youtube video.
When it comes to this operating system I am a total newbie. So, in order to do a "do it yourself" install (since I still can't install some pre installed apps like "Dialer" and other things) are there simple instructions to do a "do it yourself" or do you have to be a techy to do it? I know Windows OS well but Android is so foreign to me. Just had this thing for a few days and I am ready to throw the netbook against the wall and then stomp on it. Your root was my last hope.
Well first off, were you able to actually play flash in the browser? That would be a nice new development. Alternatively, you could try the included Youtube player.
I would be glad to help in any way I can. For a do it yourself ROM, you would just take the factory firmware RAR file and edit it yourself. You would start by unRARing the file with something like WinRAR on Windows. But I would recommend trying GNU/Linux instead if you are at all interested in development. You can use the README file and this thread as a reference along the way.
Why are you interested in installing the dialer anyway? I noticed some phone components are installed but there seems to be no way to access them.
You're a doll Jason. Thanks for your willingness to help.
I didn't know about the Youtube player. Thanks for the tip. On the original install I was able to play flash in "Browser" (at Youtube at least) but not with "Browser" in this install. Although, maybe "Browser" opened "My Browser" in the original install and that's the one that had flash support. (I'm still learning). So since I didn't get around to installing your included browser maybe that's why it wouldn't play. Anyhow, I couldn't install the flash update via the link Youtube provided. The little download arrow on the top left hand of the screen just never went away. I had the unit on for about 3 hours and the arrow remained with no confirmation that the download was complete. I searched the system and the SD card for the download but couldn't find it. This is not the first time I had this problem with downloads so maybe it's something with my particular device. This is actually my third. Last two were defects.
About the Dialer... it was a typo. I meant to say I want to UNINSTALL it from the unit, but Android won't let me. It just seems useless to have this app since I have a netbook and not a phone. Plus, I think it may be eating up my battery usage as it could be the app responsible for the cell standby thing I have in Battery Usage which is using up 80% of my battery. Like I said, I am a newbie to this OS so, I'm looking at things like Dialer, Telophony etc. I may be wrong about this though. It may be some other application seeking Cell Radio signal as reported in Battery Usage.
I just did a side by side comparison of the unzipped install I got from Craigs website (by the way, thanks for that link) and your version to see if I could learn and do my own hack. I did notice a few differences.
Ok first I saw the Optional folder with some apps and Browser fix as you mentioned in the Read me
Then there was the app folder where you removed some apps from the original install and added others. Is it as simple as that? To just delete the apps you don't want from this folder of the original install? Unfortunately I don't see Dialer in that folder. I'd like to get rid of that too. I guess you can't get rid of every app.
Another difference was that I saw "su" in "bin". and I noticed SuperUser.apk in your app folder. Does that app make you the administrator of the device giving you access to system files to delete them if you want to? (I looked it up on WIKI) Cause maybe I can include that in my hack.
Also I see another difference in this folder:
\FirmwareInstall\packages\fs_patch\root_patch\system\lib
In your readme you said these are shared libraries but I don't have a clue what that means. Do I need these files?
Thanks again for taking the time with this. I would love to do my own hack. It would give me great satisfaction after the countless hours of stress trying to do stuff they won't let me do.
All the best,
Angie

The JellyBean update for Google Now, which includes manually adding sports teams, has not yet been ported. Please refrain from asking about this update, since all we're going to do is give you a silly answer to match the silly question.
Requirements:
Follow the simple instructions here.
You must be on Ice Cream Sandwich.
You MUST be rooted
You must be on a deodexed ROM. If you aren't sure, ask your chef.
You should be running a custom recovery like ClockWorkMod Recovery (CWM) or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP). I use CWM, so this guide is based on that.
WVGA resolution or higher. (480 x 800)
Your device must be using ARMv6 or v7 CPU architecture. If you aren't sure what that is, check this thread.
You must have a file explorer that has root permissions. I use ES File Explorer, so this guide is based on that.
You need at least 60MB of system space for the full offline installation. (30MB for online only version) If you don't know how to check, simply download Titanium Backup from the market. It tells you right on the main screen. (pic)
ARMv7 INSTRUCTIONS:
Download whichever file you want and flash it in recovery. Always be sure to make a backup just in case.
File descriptions:
Online only zip is for those of you who need to save /system space. It removes the offline voice files, so that offline voice dictation does not work. You must always have some sort of data connection for this type of zip.
Offline/Online zip is for those with no /system space restrictions. It contains the full Google Now package with offline voice dictation.
Update zip is for those who already have a version of GN installed. All it does is change your version to the one your choose without having to download a big file. If you are already on an Offline version, it will update you to the Offline version of whichever you choose. Same goes for Online versions and manual installations.
APK only is for those who have already flashed a zip. You may simply push the new apk to /system/app (overwrite or remove the previous version), set permissions to rw-r-r (0644), and reboot to enjoy the latest version of Google Now. DO NOT TRY TO INSTALL THE APK BY ITSELF.
If you aren't sure which one to use, or if this is too much information or is otherwise overwhelming for you, just flash the L4 version - Offline/Online, since it's the latest. Be sure to scroll down a bit and read about it, though.
Before doing anything, you need to make sure you have at least 60MB of free space on your /system partition for Offline/Online files and 30MB of free /system space for Online Only files. The L4 Full Zip only requires 20MB of free space.
Easy installation:
reekotubbs created an installer/restorer that can be used to easily pick which zip you want. It also backs up relevant files for you in case you want to restore later. The thread link is below. Please ask any questions regarding this installer in his thread. [APP][4.0] Google Now for ICS Installer/Restorer [flashable Aroma Zip]
Alternately, if you aren't sure which recovery you're using, or your recovery messed up a flash, try out reekotubbs' app. It does the same thing as his aroma zip linked above, but it works through a standard Android app available for download on the Amazon app store and slide me market. As before, please ask questions about this app in his thread. GNow Handlebars
Flashable ZIPs
As per the new XDA rule on sharing, I am requesting that these zips not be shared elsewhere. I can't troubleshoot issues outside this thread, so please direct people here instead of redistributing the zips.

L4 - lenny_kano's version 4 - This is identical to the M7 file below, except the apk has been edited to allow you to download your own language files. This means that there is no online or offline version. Download the zip, and flash it. If you already have Google Now installed, you will need to remove it first before installing this version.
Full Zip via Mediafire - 13.06MB /Hotfile mirror
L4-Velvet.apk Only
M7 - mikeyxda's version 7. This version improves on M6 by tweaking notifications to be more accurate and frequent. This version may use more battery. If you are using a Sense ROM, see the troubleshooting below for a hack to improve Google Now performance and battery efficiency.
Online/Offline via Mediafire - 36.48MB /Hotfile mirror
Online Only via Mediafire - 14.06MB /Hotfile mirror
M7 Update - 3.97MB /Hotfile mirror
M7-Velvet.apk Only
Inverted M7 - This is identical to the M7 files from above, except the colors are inverted, so that it has a black background instead of white, and white text instead of black. If you already have Google Now flashed, you can simply perform the update to this version.
Online/Offline via Mediafire - 36.81MB /Hotfile mirror
Online Only via Mediafire - 14.04MB /Hotfile mirror
Inverted M7 Update - 4.30MB /Hotfile mirror
M7inverted-Velvet.apk Only
How to:
Move the file you picked to the root of your SD card. Don't put it in any folder. This just makes it easier to find.
Reboot your device into recovery. See your device's specific instructions on how to do this if you are not sure. Google it for a faster answer.
Backup your current ROM.
In CWM, navigate to "Install zip from SD" and select that.
Next, highlight "Choose zip from SD card" and select it.
Scroll down to the Google Now zip you loaded onto your SD card, then select it.
Scroll down and select the option that says "Yes - Install Google Now....zip"
Once it has flashed, go back to the main CWM menu and select "Reboot system now".
Launch Google Now by opening your App Drawer and selecting the Google Icon (pic), or by adding the Google Search Widget (pic) to your home screen, then doing a normal search. (pic)
Go into the settings menu for Google Now and set it up for your Google account and various other settings.
Manual Installation:
Some Recoveries do not do a good job of retaining the permissions being set by the zips. Some don't even properly flash the files. If you aren't using CWM or TWR or it seems as though Google Now hasn't been flashed properly, then please follow these steps to manually install everything.
Download the Google Now zip of your choice from above and extract the /system folder into your SD card.
Fire up ES File Explorer (or whichever one you feel like using).
If you haven't used ES File Explorer before, open it, then hit menu.
Tap settings, then scroll all the way down.
Tap the entry that says "Root Settings" and make sure everything in there is checked.(pic).
Allow root access when the dialogue box for Superuser pops up.
After that, check off "Mount file system", then back out of the menu.
Navigate to the SD card with the Google Now /system folder.
Long press on the /system folder and select "Copy" from the menu.
Navigate up to the root directory and then press the "Paste" button on your menu bar at the top. (pic)
It will ask if you want to overwrite the files. Tell it yes.
Delete GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk from /system/app or rename it to "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk.bak"
Now we need to set permissions.
Move into /system/app and scroll down to find GoogleTTS.apk.
Long press GoogleTTS.apk and select "Properties".
Change the permissions to rw-r-r. (pic)
Scroll down and find Velvet.apk.
Long press Velvet.apk and select "Properties".
Change the permissions to rw-r-r. (pic)
Navigate to /system/usr/srec/ and find two folders named "config" and "en-US"
Tap and hold on the "config" folder icon to bring up the options menu, then scroll down to Properties.
Tap properties, then tap change and see if the check boxes match this picture.
If it matches, leave it alone and head back to your home screen to enjoy using Google Now! If it doesn't match, change it so it does.
Do the same thing for the "en-US" folder.
Launch Google Now by opening your App Drawer and selecting the Google Icon (pic), or by adding the Google Search Widget (pic) to your home screen, then doing a normal search. (pic)
Go into the settings menu for Google Now and set it up for your Google account and various other settings.
ARMv6 INSTRUCTIONS:
ARMv7 zips do not work on ARMv6 devices. If your device is ARMv6, then unfortunately, you won't receive the latest and greates Google Now updates, but you can still try it out until you get a Jellybean ROM for your device. The voice search still does not work for ARMv6. There is a workaround for it, though.
The Easy Way:
Reboot into Recovery.
Backup your ROM.
Flash this in recovery.
Enjoy.
If you want to use the voice search workaround, visit this thread and install the apk.
The Hard Way:
Back up your current ROM.
Using your favorite file explorer, navigate to system/app and rename GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk to GoogleQuickSearchBox.bak. This is now your backup file.
Download this file, and rename it to "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk"
Move this file to your SD card if you downloaded it from your PC. Move it to /system/app using your favorite root file explorer.
Set the permissions to rw-r-r
Reboot and enjoy
If you want to use the voice search workaround, visit this thread and install the apk.
Now What?
So, you flashed Google Now. You're wondering what you can do with it, right? Well, thankfully, Killer-B has a handy little guide to get you up to speed on all the cool stuff Google Now can do as well as how to do it!
Commands & Now Cards For Google Now!!! Now Video, and custom widget
At this point, I'd suggest looking through your contact list for people with unusual, or difficult to pronounce names. Go into their contact card, and add in a nickname for them of their phonetically spelled name. Google Now has trouble parsing these unusual names, and there isn't a way to make it learn. Spelling the names like they sound allows you to send texts and place calls via Google Now without any voice issues.
Open up the red mic screen and "Do a barrel roll."
Troubleshooting
If you are having an issue with Google Now, please read this and the second post to see if it's been addressed already. Failing to do this will result in someone making fun of your inability to properly read. You have been warned.
The red mic screen won't display.
To fix this, press the normal mic within the Google Now app. While it is listening (after it beeps), press menu > refresh. Now you're at the red mic.
Google Now Force Closes.
Make sure you have enough space on your /system partition before installing this. You need at least 60MB free for the Offline versions and 30MB free for the Online versions.

About the permission denied fc, I'm guessing the users with the issue have an old gmail? Try updating or using tsjoklats patched one and the note to self fc will go away. See what logs do?
Oh and just to explain, the old gmail allows stuff based on signature, so as this apk is resigned it will not be allowed. The new.gmail marks it as.dangerous and will create a.notification for you to allow permission, or the patched one marks it as normal and allows it silently.

My phone gets worse battery life or uses more data.
Read this post by Racer Of All and follow the directions using apktool. This is for advanced users running a Sense 4.0 ROM only. Sense 4.1 and higher is unsupported.
Sports cards aren't showing up.
It won't add teams that aren't in regular season. To add new teams, simply do a search for them. You can also backup your ICS ROM with a nandroid, flash a Jellybean ROM, manually add teams after updating apps through the market, and then restore the ICS nandroid.
My Galaxy SIII just received the new update which blocks local search, and Google Now won't work properly.
ashshlay said:
This following post only applies currently to the stock rooted LH2 rom for the Galaxy S III TMO and Google Now installation.
The Samsung Kies update that removed the universal search function won't allow this to install via regular methods.
All files are on the device with the correct permissions except because of the different search apk (GoogleQuickSearchBox_USA.apk) the method mentioned in the OP won't work until you delete the _USA part of the file and then reboot into recovery and reflash following the OP instructions.

I can't open any search links!
This is a quirk in the later apks. You may need to hit the little magnifying glass icon next to the search link. This will allow you to open those links properly.

Have a question?
Please read this entire post and post #2 for solved problems before you post or you will be mocked. If your question has not been covered in either post, please feel free to describe your problem for us to help you. Here is the proper way to ask for help. Make sure to list the following things:
apk/zip FULL file name
Android version number
ROM
Recovery
UI (Sense/TW/AOKP/CM/AOSP)
/system size and free MB (example: 300MB/60MB) - Since some people don't understand this bit, just post a screenshot of the home screen of Titanium Backup.
LOGCAT or GTFO
Only after you list these things should you describe in excruciating detail what your problem is. Don't report anything that's already mentioned as not working or we'll just have a hearty laugh at your expense.
Back to stock:
If, for some reason, you want to remove Google Now and return to how you were before, flash the following zip. It removes all Google Now files, and returns the original Google Search app and voice files, as well as sets permissions for the Search app. Make sure to uninstall talkback and then reinstall it once you reboot to get voice search working again.
Google Now to Google Search via Mediafire- 2.02MB /Hotfile mirror

FAQ
1. Is my device ARMv6 or ARMv7?
Generally, new devices are ARMv7, older are ARMv6. There are lists all over the web. Here’s one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1596800
2. Will this work on my device?
There have been reports of multiple devices and UI’s working. The only way to know for sure is to flash it and find out. MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP FIRST. This way, if something goes wrong, you have a way back.
2a. Will this work on a stock/odexed ROM?
Again, there have been some successful reports of this working on odexed roms..but YMMV - so backup first.
3. Do I have to use CWM Recovery, or will other recoveries work?
CWM is the only recovery that’s been thoroughly tested, though there have been reports of TWRP, EXT4, and others working as well.
4. I'm getting a notification that there is a new version available, but when I try to install it, I'm told my device isn't compatible?
Well, that's because you're trying to install an official JB app on an ICS device. That's not going to work. This is a hacked version, made to be compatible with ICS. Simply swiping away the card will get rid of the update notification. There is no new version for ICS. Please do not ask for it as it's been asked for multiple times. If someone is able to hack the newer version, the OP will be updated. Til then, be happy with what you have.
5. Google Now is force closing on my device, why?
Could be a few reasons. First, make sure you have at least 60MB free space on your /system/ partition (for offline) or 30MB free space (for online). Then check permissions as specified in cajunflavoredbob’s post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29756226&postcount=2856) (RW/R/R for .apk and lib files, RWX/RX/RX for folders). If this doesn’t work, try clearing data and cache from Google Search, Force Quit Google Search, and reboot. Also, make sure you only have 1 active Velvet.apk in /system/app/ at a time
6. Voice search isn’t working, but other functionality seems OK, what’s up?
You may have installed a standalone Velvet.apk, rather than flashing a .zip from cajunflavoredbob’s post. The flashable .zip packages contain libs and other resources that are necessary for Voice search to work. Once you’ve flashed one of these .zip packages, all you need to do in the future is replace Velvet.apk in /system/app/ with the newly released .apk, change permissions to RW/R/R, and reboot. Though, if you prefer, flashing the new .zip on top of the old one won’t hurt. Just make sure you don’t have multiple Velvet.apk files in /system/app/ at any given time. Alternatively, try the response to the last FAQ (google now remover). Also, make sure you have enough freespace in /system/app/
7. When I try to make a Note to self or send an email from Now, it doesn’t actually send, or it force closes or gives another error..., what gives?
Since Velvet.apk has been resigned (not with Google’s key,) it doesn’t pass GMail’s authentication check. Here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1199518) is a patched GMail application that will skip/trick the signature check, and allow Now to access it.
7a. When sending a Note to self, it gives me an error about the Audio File not being attached?
Some users on some devices/ROMs have reported this problem. The email will still send, but the Audio attachment (the voice note) will not come along with it. Sorry.
8. Why can’t I back out of the Google Now Cards page?
This is currently a known issue. In the mean time, after pressing your Back key on the Cards page, press Menu then Refresh, and it will back out of the app properly.
9. My persistent search bar says “Google” where the microphone icon used to be?
This is a known issue. You’ll need to ditch the persistent search bar, and add the Google Search widget for the time being.
10. I flashed the .zip, but nothing happened, I don’t see Google Now ANYWHERE?
Just because you don’t see “Google Now” as an available app doesn’t mean it didn’t work. Open the “Google” app or add the “Google Search” widget. These will launch Google Now
If it's really not there, your recovery probably isn't playing nicely with the flashable .zips, in which case follow the Manual Installation instructions in the OP
11. I can’t add calendar entries via Google Now?
This seems to be an issue, but here’s a work around that should work. Google has a feature where you can text a number to add stuff to your calendar. First, you need to setup your Phone as a registered device. Go to www.google.com/calendar, and go to Calendar Settings. Click the Mobile Setup tab, enter your number, choose your carrier (not necessary), and click Send Verification code. Enter the verification code that you get via text, click Finish Setup. Now click Save and we're halfway there.
Now create a new contact on your phone called Calendar, and make the primary number 48368 (which is GVENT). Now you can use Google Now to "Text Calendar Lunch with Mom at Applebee's 1pm on Saturday". The event will be created on your calendar. Doing it this way, you will receive a confirmation text that the event was added as well. Don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but either way, still cool....
12. Why won't NFL Teams show up?
It looks like NFL teams are slowly rolling out. There have been a number of reports of users with m7 getting Football teams (myself included). Also, if you have access to a JB ROM, you can login to now on JB, manually add the football team, go back to your ICS ROM, and the team will still be there. Unfortunately in our version it's still a baseball icon for football
12a. Why can't I manually add sports teams?
AS PER THE OP: The JellyBean update for Google Now, which includes manually adding sports teams, has not yet been ported. Please refrain from asking about this update, since all we're going to do is give you a silly answer to match the silly question.
13. Voice seems to be working, but when responding, Now is cutting off the last word of the response?
Thanks to XDA user educ for finding this - I can’t confirm first hand it works but it looks promising and he said it worked for him - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1780585
14. I installed the “Offline” version, but Now won’t respond to my questions when I don’t have internet connection?
cajunflavoredbob addressed this best - “‘Offline’ means that offline message dictation works. Perhaps that should be made more clear in the op, but even the noobiest should realise that searching the Internet does in fact require the Internet. The offline version doesn't magically cache the whole google network.”
15. Double tapping the home key no longer launches S-Voice?
Install Home2Shortcut - Thanks to ilkevinli for the setup instructions:
“Home2 Shortcut does work. Your just not setting it up right.
1. Go into S-Voice settings and uncheck the "Lauch S Voice by double pressing ..."
2. Lauch Home2 Shortcut
3. In Step 1, choose S Voice
4. In Step 2, choose what you like
5. In Step 3, choose TouchWiz Home
6. In Step 4, hit close
Now when you double click the home button, choose Home2 Shortcut
Have fun.”
16. How can I get the “Swipe Up” gesture to launch Google Now?
Some launchers don’t support this. Two that have been confirmed to work are Holo Launcher and Nova Launcher. You can set the Swipe Up action to launch the “Google” app in Holo, and “Assigning swipe up to Nova setting Voice works AMAZING!!!” (Thanks crutzulee). Other launchers may support this, Sense (Rosie) doesn’t. Let me know about any more confirmed working or not working launchers, stock or otherwise (homeslice976 on xda)
APEX Launcher also works "The "swipe up" gesture works well with these steps: menu>Apex settings>behavior settings>select "swipe up">select "launch app">select "Google">"OK">home. Works great, launches reliably." - @gershomww Thank!
17. After installing this, when pressing the button on my BT headset, it launches the crappy ICS Voice Dialer, can I change this to Google Search?
We've come across 2 ways to accomplish this, however, once you default it to the Google Now Voice Search, it won't listen through the headset, or play Now's audio through the headset, this will all be done via the speaker and mic on the device. But at least it will launch Now Search, and as long as the phone is close to you, your mic should pick you up (Now's voice recognition seems to be awesome). Anyone smart enough to figure out how Voice Dialer can listen through the headset and play it's audio through the headset and can apply it to Velvet?
Method 1: Install Bluetooth Launch from the Market. Move Velvet.apk from /system/app/ to /data/app/ and reboot. Setup Bluetooth Launch to launch Google Search/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox.VoiceSearchActivity. A few users have reported this working for them (though you may need to setup Google Now again).
If after moving Velvet.apk to /data/app/ and rebooting you no longer have Google Search anywhere (app, widget, etc), or if this for some other reason doesn't work, move Velvet.apk back to /system/app/, reboot, and verify Now is working again. Then do this:
Method 2: Uninstall Bluetooth Launch from your phone and reboot. Ensure it's still uninstalled, and no longer in /data/app/ (com.kin.bluetooth_launch-1.apk). Place this (waiting for permission from Bluetooth Launch's dev, Guardian Bob, before sharing publicly. In the meantime, shoot me a PM) modified Bluetooth Launch apk in /system/app/, set permissions to RW/R/R, and install it. Once installed, open the app and set it to launch Google Search/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox.VoiceSearchActivity, then reboot. Now your BT button on your headset should launch Google Now.
18. Google Now seems to have installed properly, and is working, but everytime I open Google Now I have to go through the setup process where I tell it "I'm in", why?
A couple users have reported this issue, and said that by simply flashing the uninstall .zip, then reflashing the mod, it began working properly
19. Other weird issues? Still having trouble and don’t know what to do?
Try flashing the Google Now Remover (http://www.mediafire.com/?whihy17x6q8l31f) and then try flashing the Google Now flashable .zip of your choice and see what happens.
I would really love to see this. Its one of the features I really think makes JB cool.
The actual file is called velvet.apk and I can't get it to work as it is API 16 (jellybean) and its odexed.
There a deoxed version out, but it still doesn't work because like said above the api, is for jelly bean. We need a dev to decompile find change recompile for ics

I played around with it and got it working on ics. Still buggy and it has no voice support (at least on my phone) yet.
I'll upload the apk later when I'm at home .
me cant wait too.. please devs, do something.

Lol you had minimal sdk version=16 in manifest while ics sdk version is 15
Any updates on voice input? whats the main problem of it not working? It's depending on libs or something?
Should I install this as a normal APK?
Yes it does not require root, install as usual app (does not require to be in /system/app)
I disabled some things in voice input initializing code that require api 16, have to look deeper to resolve this, but i have no free time at the moment, so this will not be done tomorrow
The other idea is to port the missing JB apis to ICS, this should allow other JB apps to run too.
@seahorsepip while playing around with jb apps i changed my api version in build.prop to not require recompile any time - forgot this change for velvet...
Hi folks,
Just a couple of days ago I found a working MIUI ported ROM for our A789. Seems that was ported from ZTE V970 or something. I decided flash it. First boot comes in chinese, but I could find the config page to shift language. Surprisingly, there's english and many others, including portuguese (I'm brazilian). The configuration pages remain in english, but others were translated.
Very nice ROM, beautiful, with many themes (It's miui). Until now, no bugs, lags. One intersting thing: the ROM merge DATA and internal USB, ending all saving and usage issues [no. It just disables internal USB... bad...]. Battery drain seems ok. So, I think we can have a lot of fun with it!
Some screenshots attached.
Cheers!
EDIT: NEW version (v4 - 130205) released! Get it here.
Nice.
Its customary though to make phone numbers unreadable in the screenshots. I agree no one in his right mind would now start calling them, but with a few million readers on XDA, there may be a few who are not in their right minds
Also, can you tell me if this has the option to swap 3G to either SIM?

Hummm... I never realize that... Screenshot removed, just in case.
I don't get your question... Are you talking about GSM/3G shift in 1st SIM?
In settings>mobile networks>3G service there's 2 options, "enable 3G" (in that I can switch between SIM1, SIM2 or disabled) and "network mode" (GSM/WCDMA auto mode and wcdma only). As far I known, SIM2 accepts only GSM....
If you can "Enable 3G" with a choice of SIM2, then obviously SIM2 does not only accept GSM.
Strictly speaking, SIM is separate from Radio. The MT657x have 2 serial ports to read SIM's. And it has a GSM and a GSM/3G radio. There is no rule that claims the OS cannot feed the data from the 2nd SIM into the 1st 3G radio, but it does mean SIM1 then must go into the GSM-only radio.
Its a OS feature that the Mediatek template OS had for a while, but Lenovo seem to have chosen to not copy that possibility from the template.
And I think is a very useful feature. I think I will suggest this ROM to my friend, who has a A789.

This is intersting! I just assumed that SIM2 was GSM only because of that label from lenovo. I'll try this. Thank you!
One last thing: there's only one signal bar indicator, despite of fact I have 2 SIMs.
Is this ok for P700i?
No, the P700i has a differed LCD screen driver, the kernel and kernel modules needs to be swapped. I'll see if I can do that for you, but no guarantees.
In the mean time: Direct download for the A789 from baidu

Hi folks,
Just a couple of days ago I found a working MIUI ported ROM for our A789.
Cheers!

Alissoncg, "valeu meu irmão"
But i have some doubts:
1) By the look of the screen shots, i see only one network signal icon on top... are these screenshots from the web or from your phone? is that configurable or is it the fact that the rom wasn't "worked on" enough to give the rest of the info?
2) Are the default apps in chinese or english? ( calendar, etc )
3) is this rooted?
4) What are the default apps in the rom? (super su, systemapp remover, mobileuncletools, etc ?! )

Hi spinal2k "não há de quê"
1. Yes, it's my phone. I don't have any idea why it shows only one net signal. By the way, the two SIMs are working.
2. Some apps are only chinese, but are crapware, so I removed with rootexplorer. All others, the important ones, are multilanguage or english.
3. Yes, rooted but no Play Store, only sync with google account. I just flashed it.
4. Humm, let's see... reebooter, fmradio (no transmitter), file explorer (nice app!), root explorer, LBESEC by miui (like original lenovoSEC), miui compass (useless), miui gallery, miui videoplayer, music, sound recorder (nice, emulates a cassete player). All others I installed after flashing ROM.

you could try to install PlayStore by installing Google GMS. Usually if Play store is not installed, neither is network locations, so look into that too from the same post.
What I wanted to ask though: You say DATA and USB storage is merged? I was analyzing the installer (to see if I could make a P700i/A660 port), and I find no hints whatsoever that it re-partitions the memory. It just installs boot & system as usual. Please explain a bit more.
is it just me or the multitasking button switches off screen instead of showing the running apps?

Hum... I don't know what network locations does, but I simply flashed google apps from goo.im and everything is working.

It's my english... forgive me!
Well, after my fist posting here I looked in settings>storage. Actually, there is no more USB internal storage. I don't know what happened, but I don't have access to it (if exists now... maybe was erased?). I assumed that "data" and "usb storage" was merged resulting in a 2.5GB DATA, but I have only 792MB. And no USB Storage, only SD card. When connected to PC in storage mode, there is 2 storage devices detected, 1st is CD card and 2nd it's no mounted.
Please let me know if you want I test something to you.

Yes, it's a annoying thing. But we have a excellent app/function to swith beteen apps, just long press home button. Not only a switcher, but a memory cleaner.
tbh, i like this rom because off the costumization but i'm going back to cybermaus rom....
this one has loads of bug, i hate the root app that comes in stock!!!!
sometimes i get java errors ( after removing some of the "crapware" )

Here I installed SuperSU to bypass the stock one, and until now, no errors.
Things i liked in this rom:
1) customize every single piece of the UI ( themes, statusbar, more status bar information such as network speed, settings menus, new widget interactions )
2) i tried several themes, all beautiful and very interactive.
3) sms app no longer prompts for network, just click the send button of the network you want to use
4) loads of languages if you find the menu to change the language ( go to settings, click line with keyboard icon, and click first option )
5) some new options in the notification center which i like ( paging, add or remove toggles, etc )
6) <removed>
7) i love the messages in the lockscreen when you have emails, missing calls, unread sms, etc.
8) unlock screen with 4 options instead of two ( besides camera and unlock we have sms and another one i don't remember )
9) i like this main theme more than i like the original Lenovo theme ( i don't like the default dark and red UI and the default font of the default dialer on the original rom )
Things i found confusing in this rom:
1) one signal bar only, even though both networks are working fine but i like the information on both networks. I live in a very "network unstable" environment.
2) app drawer gone (too many apps is a mess, imo)
3) lots of java errors after removing some of the Chinese apps. Had to reinstall rom and wipe device several times to try and detect which was the app causing all those errors after removal.
4) the stock SU app is problematic (executing a "root needed" app asks for permissions, i allow it and then the app hangs... need to go to app to manually allow again and re-execute the app) and changing to the superSu one not so easy ( after 4 wipes i finnaly did it with out errors )
5) if there is more than one icon/network carrier in the upper LEFT corner, 3 dots appear instead. Don't know what's actually running or not.
6) LBE half chinese half english and if i remove it and install the full chinese one, loads of java errors.
7) Fourth button on the phone ( multitask access button ) does the same as the power button when phone is with screen on ( black screen and locks ). Pressing home button more than 2 or 3 seconds brings up the multitasking menu ( swipe up to remove from memory ).
8) USB Internal storage just dessapeared... "/mnt/sdcard/" is the only one that exists (on cybermays rom, at least on my device, /mnt/sdcard2/ is the sdcard partition and /mnt/sdcard/ is the usb internal partition) and is the sdcard one... you don't get the message "Preparing External Storage" at boot time, widgets work properly from sdcard.
---
There are probably more things i liked and disliked about this rom, i'm already on cybermaus rom. If i remember i'll say it later.
If you go to the "about this phone", you see that this ROM is marked as BETA1....I'll be checking the updates on this one because there are definitely things I liked in this ROM.
Strange... As I said, I really don't got any errors! I simply remove all chinese-only apps and everything is ok. In fact, all another problems you pointed really exists, but for me it's acceptable, because the whole ROM is simply beautiful... But it's a beta, so we could expect improvements.
If I understand the china guys (with a little help from google translate ) there is a kind of schedule to do things like this port from ZTE to our A789. There is another phones being ported too, so seems there will be hope for us...
I just discovered that USB internal storage wasn't erased or something else. Apparently it's just not mounted. Because of my "recovery battle", after flash cybermaus one, I looked in recovery and I could see USB internal storage there.

Teclast P78HD 7" Retina Allwinner A31 Android 4.4.2 firmware upgrade + root (tablet)

Costing only about $100, the Teclast P78HD tablet is a decent bargain 7" tablet. It has a quad-core Allwinner A31 CPU, a 1920 x 1200 display, Android 4.4.2 KitKat, microSD slot, and micro-HDMI.
It lacks GPS and not pre-rooted. I purchased from TinyDeal.com and added a couple of bucks for faster, more reliable ePacket delivery.
The original firmware v1.1.2 comes with a boatload of (unwanted) pre-installed Chinese apps, most cannot be uninstalled, using up valuable internal storage space and reducing available RAM. The Teclast tUI launcher seems to try to prevent the user from accessing all apps since it lacks an "all apps" circle button. It does have Google Play Store installed along with a Chinese TaiDian apps store. I immediately downloaded the Nova launcher to replace the tUI launcher.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.launcher
General operation seemed quite snappy and the Retina display resolution was clearly noticed while playing movies. I did get the impression that internet web access seemed a bit slower than it should be.
The P78HD is much lighter (half of the weight?) of my Nexus 7 (2012) tablet. Most of the lower weight is likely to be from a thinner battery. So, the downside is shorter battery time and upside is faster full charging.
The light weight makes the P78HD more comfortable for extended use than the Nexus 7. That comfort, however, was diminished by the hard metallic bezel edges of the P78HD when compared to the Nexus 7's softer rounded edges. When holding the P78HD in landscape mode, the wider top/bottom bezel was comfortable. In portrait mode, however, it was much less so. For comfort, I would definitely recommend adding a soft case/shell, example: http://gd1.alicdn.com/imgextra/i1/678991471/T2um7tXqJaXXXXXXXX-678991471.jpg
I unsuccessfully tried several links and ways to "root" the P78HD in order to uninstall all the unwanted Chinese apps. There is a Teclast app called Update. One of the advertised features of Teclast is its easier OTA updates. Since a new firmware version v2.03 was just released, I tried to update, hoping that the new firmware would be "pre-rooted". Using the "automated" option of the Teclast Update app, I got an error (in bad English) that basically said that the file could not be found.
I then searched for a link to download new firmware in order to use the Teclast Update "manual update" option. The downloaded v2.03 firmware ( http://dl.dbank.com/c0ckts308s ) comes packaged in RAR format. I used Windows 7Zip to unpack the *.rar file and extracted the actual *.img file. I also repacked the package as a new *.zip file. I copied the *.rar, *.zip, and *.img files to the P78HD's internal sdcard root directory. Unfortunately, even the "manual update" option just gave a failure message when trying to update using the *.rar, *.zip, or *.img file as source. My experience suggests that the Teclast "Update" app is simply broken, at least for firmware updates.
Next method, try the Allwinner PhoenixSuit Windows software included in the downloaded RAR package. The MSI install program is in the Chinese language but you can probably guess how it works. If not, here is a (not tested) English version: http://itead.me/ITEADDownload/software/PhoenixSuit_EN.msi
I started the PhoenixSuit software. It asks to upgrade to the latest version. I connected the P78HD via USB and got this display:
I clicked the Firmware tab and entered my source file P78HD(C4A5).img location. It failed. As my programmer hunch, I renamed the file to remove the parentheses and put it in C:\ root directory. This time it starts working.
You have two options: (Y) format or (N) normal upgrade. I wanted a clean start without any leftover bloatware apps so I chose YES.
The v2.03 firmware transfer process starts and when done the P78HD reboots. Everything worked fine.
Upon reboot I note that there are far fewer bloatware Chinese apps. Of course, I have to go into Settings, find the "A" icon and change the language from Chinese to English (top line). Next, set up my WI-FI and add my Google Account. Then add a few apps, starting with Nova launcher. Unfortunately, v2.03 firmware is still not rooted. However, I decided to try Kingo Android ROOT again (it did not work with v1.1.2 firmware.) With the P78HD connected via USB, this time it seems to work but too quickly. I checked using a Root Verifier app on the P78HD. It says no. I then try the Kingo ROOT AGAIN option. This time it really works.
Now as a rooted device, I used the Root App Delete app to uninstall pre-installed Chinese software, users apps and a few "system apps". (For safety, you can use PhoenixSuit's APK tab to backup most of your apps first.)
Next, I ran AnTuTu and AnTuTu X benchmark apps to compare to my Nexus 7 (2012) tablet.
Code:
AnTuTu AnTuTu X
Nexus 7 (2012) 13,309 13,730
Teclast P78HD 20,795 12,790
Using the DiskInfo app, it seems that memory optimization in Google's Nexus 7 is lacking in the P78HD. Ditto for internal storage usage.
As someone who experiments with lots of apps, I have about 300 apps installed on my old Nexus 7. So far, I have less than 100 on the P78HD. One reason is that even by moving from internal to SDcard storage, you have to manage the internal storage space much more deliberately on the P78HD. Despite having 3 times as many apps on my Nexus 7, I am able to keep my internal storage usage considerably lower than on the P78HD. Regarding RAM usage, the Nexus 7 is typically under 50% in use while the P78HD is over 70%.
Bottom line: Google's optimizations on its Nexus line can make up for a lot when compared to better spec'd but less optimized competing tablets. For the price, however, the Teclast P78HD is no slouch in performance or stability. It is still quite a bargain if screen resolution, and micro-SD and HDMI features and cost are high on your list of priorities.
Thank you for the info :victory: if you find other update please share did you notice some weird things ? like desktop icons disappear randomly, fast battery drain an when you are on 10% last more, if you update supersu app can't update su binary, see ya!

I never had icons disappear but maybe because I don't use the Teclast tUI launcher. I had no problem with the much better Nova launcher.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.launcher
I did decide that Teclast's less than ideal internal memory management required something better than the built-in Android App2SD method used by utilities like Clean Master, SD Maid, All-in-One Toolbox, and AppMgr III. These utilties are only able to move a small proportion of apps to the internal SD card. If you plan to install lots of apps, you need something better like Link2SD.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.buak.Link2SD
To use Link2SD, your tablet must be rooted and you need to divide an external microSD card into two "primary partitions", (1) one FAT32 (Windows) partition and (2) one EXT4 (Linux) partition. I used Partition Wizard's free "MiniTool" partition manager:
http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
I used a 16GB class 10 micro-SD card. I made the first (FAT32) partition 14GB and the second (EXT4) partition 2GB.
2GB is probably far more than enough for moved apps and linking used by Link2SD, especially if you go to Link2SD Settings and change preferred Move2SD location to "Internal".
I plan to leave this 16GB micro-SD card in my Teclast P78HD permanently. (The reason: if this external SD is not present while the tablet is active, you are likely to really screw up some links and changes made by Link2SD. Your moved apps may be considered either missing or corrupted.)
Using Link2SD, I can now move almost all "user apps" from "internal storage" to (external) sdcard, apps that cannot be moved by these other utilities. I can also "really" uninstall most of the unwanted Chinese apps that other utility programs claim to uninstall but actually fail to do so.
I am not certain if this is correct, but I tend prefer to use Link2SD's "move2SD" method and not Link2SD's "link" method because (1) links may be more vulnerable to corruption (2) links may add possible overhead that "could" slow things down or use more memory. If this is wrong, I hope that someone who is more experienced with Link2SD can correct me.

Hi, thank you!
I am really looking forward to root and update the FW on this tablet.
Did you also optimized it somehow? (modify of build.prob etc..)
I think there is lot of space for optimization because device is laggy in normal 2D mode, more that my old 1 core 512MB memory phone on Android 4.4. Also kernel is pretty old on original FW 1.1.2, CPU is underclocked (looks like)....
Otherwise it's good tables, screen is great, resolution is ideal for web browsing. I don't play games so 3D performance is not a problem for me.
HD movies are played smoothly and OK
Hi,
I have problem root the device, your kingo_android_root.zip archive is "infected" regarding google drive:
"Sorry, this file is infected with a virus
Only the owner is allowed to download infected files."
I have tried to root over version I downloaded from internet but it doesn't work, it detect that device is already rooted (not true) and re-root is not successful.
Any idea? What version of Kingo root do you have tested and it's working OK?

It is not infected. Rooting software typically contains methods to bypass security so you may get a false positive.
Here's the direct download link: http://www.kingoapp.com/android-root/download.htm
For rooting, make sure that you have enabled "USB debugging" in your tablet's Settings -> Developer options
Connect to a USB 2.0 port if possible and not a USB 3.0 port.
Swipe down from top of the tablet's screen to see notifications.
The bottom line notification will probably be 'Connect as ...'
Click that line and make sure that 'USB large storage' is checked (not MTP or PTP)
Swipe down again from the top line notification may say 'USB connected'
Click that line and click 'Turn on USB storage'
After it is "really" connected, try the Kingo Root software again.
If "ROOT" or "ROOT AGAIN" works, then you're done.
If not, disconnect the USB cable and reconnect a few seconds later. Try again.

Hi,
I have found that I must turn on "USB Storage", then it's rooting really successful
So correct procedure is:
- turn USB debugging ON
- select "USB large storage" in "USB computer connection" pop-up
- >> activate USB storage in "USB connected" pop-up << (this was missing in my previous attempt)
After that, rooting is succesfull!
I have removed over 20 applications and now I have 13862 score in AntutuX. In older fw was around 11000.
There is also possible to overclock CPU from default 1200Mhz up to 1450Mhz. For me, 1350Mhz is max. stable.
So I can finally recommend this tablet, it's great ☺
Now it would be great to figure out how to enable CWM...

Yes, those application are always re-installed during the boot because they are in special directory "/system/preinstall"
Uninstall them and go to this directory and remove them forever!
Thanks! Yeah, removed!
So far not bad except some intermittent lag and battery drain a bit fast. Have to use for a few more days for sure.

If I remember right, when you uninstall pre-installed apps like PPTV by using Link2SD, they are permanently removed.
BTW, I recently rooted my Motorola Moto E (Kingo Root did NOT work for this device). Based on my experience with the Moto E, I changed my mind about which method (1) Move2SD or (2) Linking to use with Link2SD. I find that I now prefer the "link" method and it seems to work without problem, perhaps because links are made on an EXT4 partition.
Some applications are missing in google play store for me, like google+
Do you have same experience?
