[DEAD][MOD][ICS] Google Now for ICS -Updated for Multi-Language (4 Feb 13) [DEAD] - Android Apps and Games

READ THE FIRST TWO POSTS ENTIRELY BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANYTHING. MOST ISSUES HAVE ALREADY BEEN SOLVED.
This is the original Google Now version without sport team adding or stocks. This will not be updated any further. Use a Jellybean ROM if you want to see the updated features. Do not ask about updates. If you do not read these posts and ask a question which has already been answered, you will be mocked.
Read through the entire first and second post before asking a question. By clicking the "Show Content" button below, you agree that you forfeit any right to get upset when someone makes fun of you for posting a question that has been covered. We will work tirelessly to help you solve issues when you have them. All that's asked of you in return is to at least attempt to solve them yourself by reading these first two posts.
The JellyBean update for Google Now, which includes manually adding sports teams, has not yet been ported. Please refrain from asking about this update, since all we're going to do is give you a silly answer to match the silly question.
Requirements:
Follow the simple instructions here.
You must be on Ice Cream Sandwich.
You MUST be rooted
You must be on a deodexed ROM. If you aren't sure, ask your chef.
You should be running a custom recovery like ClockWorkMod Recovery (CWM) or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP). I use CWM, so this guide is based on that.
WVGA resolution or higher. (480 x 800)
Your device must be using ARMv6 or v7 CPU architecture. If you aren't sure what that is, check this thread.
You must have a file explorer that has root permissions. I use ES File Explorer, so this guide is based on that.
You need at least 60MB of system space for the full offline installation. (30MB for online only version) If you don't know how to check, simply download Titanium Backup from the market. It tells you right on the main screen. (pic)
ARMv7 INSTRUCTIONS:
Download whichever file you want and flash it in recovery. Always be sure to make a backup just in case.
File descriptions:
Online only zip is for those of you who need to save /system space. It removes the offline voice files, so that offline voice dictation does not work. You must always have some sort of data connection for this type of zip.
Offline/Online zip is for those with no /system space restrictions. It contains the full Google Now package with offline voice dictation.
Update zip is for those who already have a version of GN installed. All it does is change your version to the one your choose without having to download a big file. If you are already on an Offline version, it will update you to the Offline version of whichever you choose. Same goes for Online versions and manual installations.
APK only is for those who have already flashed a zip. You may simply push the new apk to /system/app (overwrite or remove the previous version), set permissions to rw-r-r (0644), and reboot to enjoy the latest version of Google Now. DO NOT TRY TO INSTALL THE APK BY ITSELF.
If you aren't sure which one to use, or if this is too much information or is otherwise overwhelming for you, just flash the L4 version - Offline/Online, since it's the latest. Be sure to scroll down a bit and read about it, though.
Before doing anything, you need to make sure you have at least 60MB of free space on your /system partition for Offline/Online files and 30MB of free /system space for Online Only files. The L4 Full Zip only requires 20MB of free space.
Easy installation:
reekotubbs created an installer/restorer that can be used to easily pick which zip you want. It also backs up relevant files for you in case you want to restore later. The thread link is below. Please ask any questions regarding this installer in his thread. [APP][4.0] Google Now for ICS Installer/Restorer [flashable Aroma Zip]
Alternately, if you aren't sure which recovery you're using, or your recovery messed up a flash, try out reekotubbs' app. It does the same thing as his aroma zip linked above, but it works through a standard Android app available for download on the Amazon app store and slide me market. As before, please ask questions about this app in his thread. GNow Handlebars
Flashable ZIPs
As per the new XDA rule on sharing, I am requesting that these zips not be shared elsewhere. I can't troubleshoot issues outside this thread, so please direct people here instead of redistributing the zips.
BY CLICKING THIS BUTTON BELOW TO SHOW THE CONTENT, YOU AGREE THAT YOU HAVE READ THIS POST AND THE NEXT ONE ENTIRELY. IF YOU HAVEN'T, AND YOU POST SOMETHING THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN ANSWERED, YOU WILL BE MOCKED. DO NOT CLICK THE "SHOW CONTENT" BUTTON UNLESS YOU AGREE TO THIS.
L4 - lenny_kano's version 4 - This is identical to the M7 file below, except the apk has been edited to allow you to download your own language files. This means that there is no online or offline version. Download the zip, and flash it. If you already have Google Now installed, you will need to remove it first before installing this version.
Full Zip via Mediafire - 13.06MB /Hotfile mirror
L4-Velvet.apk Only
M7 - mikeyxda's version 7. This version improves on M6 by tweaking notifications to be more accurate and frequent. This version may use more battery. If you are using a Sense ROM, see the troubleshooting below for a hack to improve Google Now performance and battery efficiency.
Online/Offline via Mediafire - 36.48MB /Hotfile mirror
Online Only via Mediafire - 14.06MB /Hotfile mirror
M7 Update - 3.97MB /Hotfile mirror
M7-Velvet.apk Only
Inverted M7 - This is identical to the M7 files from above, except the colors are inverted, so that it has a black background instead of white, and white text instead of black. If you already have Google Now flashed, you can simply perform the update to this version.
Online/Offline via Mediafire - 36.81MB /Hotfile mirror
Online Only via Mediafire - 14.04MB /Hotfile mirror
Inverted M7 Update - 4.30MB /Hotfile mirror
M7inverted-Velvet.apk Only
How to:
Move the file you picked to the root of your SD card. Don't put it in any folder. This just makes it easier to find.
Reboot your device into recovery. See your device's specific instructions on how to do this if you are not sure. Google it for a faster answer.
Backup your current ROM.
In CWM, navigate to "Install zip from SD" and select that.
Next, highlight "Choose zip from SD card" and select it.
Scroll down to the Google Now zip you loaded onto your SD card, then select it.
Scroll down and select the option that says "Yes - Install Google Now....zip"
Once it has flashed, go back to the main CWM menu and select "Reboot system now".
Launch Google Now by opening your App Drawer and selecting the Google Icon (pic), or by adding the Google Search Widget (pic) to your home screen, then doing a normal search. (pic)
Go into the settings menu for Google Now and set it up for your Google account and various other settings.
Manual Installation:
Some Recoveries do not do a good job of retaining the permissions being set by the zips. Some don't even properly flash the files. If you aren't using CWM or TWR or it seems as though Google Now hasn't been flashed properly, then please follow these steps to manually install everything.
Download the Google Now zip of your choice from above and extract the /system folder into your SD card.
Fire up ES File Explorer (or whichever one you feel like using).
If you haven't used ES File Explorer before, open it, then hit menu.
Tap settings, then scroll all the way down.
Tap the entry that says "Root Settings" and make sure everything in there is checked.(pic).
Allow root access when the dialogue box for Superuser pops up.
After that, check off "Mount file system", then back out of the menu.
Navigate to the SD card with the Google Now /system folder.
Long press on the /system folder and select "Copy" from the menu.
Navigate up to the root directory and then press the "Paste" button on your menu bar at the top. (pic)
It will ask if you want to overwrite the files. Tell it yes.
Delete GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk from /system/app or rename it to "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk.bak"
Now we need to set permissions.
Move into /system/app and scroll down to find GoogleTTS.apk.
Long press GoogleTTS.apk and select "Properties".
Change the permissions to rw-r-r. (pic)
Scroll down and find Velvet.apk.
Long press Velvet.apk and select "Properties".
Change the permissions to rw-r-r. (pic)
Navigate to /system/usr/srec/ and find two folders named "config" and "en-US"
Tap and hold on the "config" folder icon to bring up the options menu, then scroll down to Properties.
Tap properties, then tap change and see if the check boxes match this picture.
If it matches, leave it alone and head back to your home screen to enjoy using Google Now! If it doesn't match, change it so it does.
Do the same thing for the "en-US" folder.
Launch Google Now by opening your App Drawer and selecting the Google Icon (pic), or by adding the Google Search Widget (pic) to your home screen, then doing a normal search. (pic)
Go into the settings menu for Google Now and set it up for your Google account and various other settings.
ARMv6 INSTRUCTIONS:
ARMv7 zips do not work on ARMv6 devices. If your device is ARMv6, then unfortunately, you won't receive the latest and greates Google Now updates, but you can still try it out until you get a Jellybean ROM for your device. The voice search still does not work for ARMv6. There is a workaround for it, though.
The Easy Way:
Reboot into Recovery.
Backup your ROM.
Flash this in recovery.
Enjoy.
If you want to use the voice search workaround, visit this thread and install the apk.
The Hard Way:
Back up your current ROM.
Using your favorite file explorer, navigate to system/app and rename GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk to GoogleQuickSearchBox.bak. This is now your backup file.
Download this file, and rename it to "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk"
Move this file to your SD card if you downloaded it from your PC. Move it to /system/app using your favorite root file explorer.
Set the permissions to rw-r-r
Reboot and enjoy
If you want to use the voice search workaround, visit this thread and install the apk.
Now What?
So, you flashed Google Now. You're wondering what you can do with it, right? Well, thankfully, Killer-B has a handy little guide to get you up to speed on all the cool stuff Google Now can do as well as how to do it!
Commands & Now Cards For Google Now!!! Now Video, and custom widget
At this point, I'd suggest looking through your contact list for people with unusual, or difficult to pronounce names. Go into their contact card, and add in a nickname for them of their phonetically spelled name. Google Now has trouble parsing these unusual names, and there isn't a way to make it learn. Spelling the names like they sound allows you to send texts and place calls via Google Now without any voice issues.
Open up the red mic screen and "Do a barrel roll."
Troubleshooting
If you are having an issue with Google Now, please read this and the second post to see if it's been addressed already. Failing to do this will result in someone making fun of your inability to properly read. You have been warned.
The red mic screen won't display.
To fix this, press the normal mic within the Google Now app. While it is listening (after it beeps), press menu > refresh. Now you're at the red mic.
Google Now Force Closes.
Make sure you have enough space on your /system partition before installing this. You need at least 60MB free for the Offline versions and 30MB free for the Online versions.
lenny_kano said:
About the permission denied fc, I'm guessing the users with the issue have an old gmail? Try updating or using tsjoklats patched one and the note to self fc will go away. See what logs do?
Oh and just to explain, the old gmail allows stuff based on signature, so as this apk is resigned it will not be allowed. The new.gmail marks it as.dangerous and will create a.notification for you to allow permission, or the patched one marks it as normal and allows it silently.

My phone gets worse battery life or uses more data.
Read this post by Racer Of All and follow the directions using apktool. This is for advanced users running a Sense 4.0 ROM only. Sense 4.1 and higher is unsupported.
Sports cards aren't showing up.
It won't add teams that aren't in regular season. To add new teams, simply do a search for them. You can also backup your ICS ROM with a nandroid, flash a Jellybean ROM, manually add teams after updating apps through the market, and then restore the ICS nandroid.
My Galaxy SIII just received the new update which blocks local search, and Google Now won't work properly.
ashshlay said:
This following post only applies currently to the stock rooted LH2 rom for the Galaxy S III TMO and Google Now installation.
The Samsung Kies update that removed the universal search function won't allow this to install via regular methods.
All files are on the device with the correct permissions except because of the different search apk (GoogleQuickSearchBox_USA.apk) the method mentioned in the OP won't work until you delete the _USA part of the file and then reboot into recovery and reflash following the OP instructions.

I can't open any search links!
This is a quirk in the later apks. You may need to hit the little magnifying glass icon next to the search link. This will allow you to open those links properly.
My phone exploded.

Have a question?
Please read this entire post and post #2 for solved problems before you post or you will be mocked. If your question has not been covered in either post, please feel free to describe your problem for us to help you. Here is the proper way to ask for help. Make sure to list the following things:
apk/zip FULL file name
Android version number
ROM
Recovery
UI (Sense/TW/AOKP/CM/AOSP)
/system size and free MB (example: 300MB/60MB) - Since some people don't understand this bit, just post a screenshot of the home screen of Titanium Backup.
LOGCAT or GTFO
Only after you list these things should you describe in excruciating detail what your problem is. Don't report anything that's already mentioned as not working or we'll just have a hearty laugh at your expense.
Back to stock:
If, for some reason, you want to remove Google Now and return to how you were before, flash the following zip. It removes all Google Now files, and returns the original Google Search app and voice files, as well as sets permissions for the Search app. Make sure to uninstall talkback and then reinstall it once you reboot to get voice search working again.
Google Now to Google Search via Mediafire- 2.02MB /Hotfile mirror
If you have a question, make sure you've read through the first two posts. If you don't, we will make fun of you.

FAQ
1. Is my device ARMv6 or ARMv7?
Generally, new devices are ARMv7, older are ARMv6. There are lists all over the web. Here’s one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1596800
2. Will this work on my device?
There have been reports of multiple devices and UI’s working. The only way to know for sure is to flash it and find out. MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP FIRST. This way, if something goes wrong, you have a way back.
2a. Will this work on a stock/odexed ROM?
Again, there have been some successful reports of this working on odexed roms..but YMMV - so backup first.
3. Do I have to use CWM Recovery, or will other recoveries work?
CWM is the only recovery that’s been thoroughly tested, though there have been reports of TWRP, EXT4, and others working as well.
4. I'm getting a notification that there is a new version available, but when I try to install it, I'm told my device isn't compatible?
Well, that's because you're trying to install an official JB app on an ICS device. That's not going to work. This is a hacked version, made to be compatible with ICS. Simply swiping away the card will get rid of the update notification. There is no new version for ICS. Please do not ask for it as it's been asked for multiple times. If someone is able to hack the newer version, the OP will be updated. Til then, be happy with what you have.
5. Google Now is force closing on my device, why?
Could be a few reasons. First, make sure you have at least 60MB free space on your /system/ partition (for offline) or 30MB free space (for online). Then check permissions as specified in cajunflavoredbob’s post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29756226&postcount=2856) (RW/R/R for .apk and lib files, RWX/RX/RX for folders). If this doesn’t work, try clearing data and cache from Google Search, Force Quit Google Search, and reboot. Also, make sure you only have 1 active Velvet.apk in /system/app/ at a time
6. Voice search isn’t working, but other functionality seems OK, what’s up?
You may have installed a standalone Velvet.apk, rather than flashing a .zip from cajunflavoredbob’s post. The flashable .zip packages contain libs and other resources that are necessary for Voice search to work. Once you’ve flashed one of these .zip packages, all you need to do in the future is replace Velvet.apk in /system/app/ with the newly released .apk, change permissions to RW/R/R, and reboot. Though, if you prefer, flashing the new .zip on top of the old one won’t hurt. Just make sure you don’t have multiple Velvet.apk files in /system/app/ at any given time. Alternatively, try the response to the last FAQ (google now remover). Also, make sure you have enough freespace in /system/app/
7. When I try to make a Note to self or send an email from Now, it doesn’t actually send, or it force closes or gives another error..., what gives?
Since Velvet.apk has been resigned (not with Google’s key,) it doesn’t pass GMail’s authentication check. Here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1199518) is a patched GMail application that will skip/trick the signature check, and allow Now to access it.
7a. When sending a Note to self, it gives me an error about the Audio File not being attached?
Some users on some devices/ROMs have reported this problem. The email will still send, but the Audio attachment (the voice note) will not come along with it. Sorry.
8. Why can’t I back out of the Google Now Cards page?
This is currently a known issue. In the mean time, after pressing your Back key on the Cards page, press Menu then Refresh, and it will back out of the app properly.
9. My persistent search bar says “Google” where the microphone icon used to be?
This is a known issue. You’ll need to ditch the persistent search bar, and add the Google Search widget for the time being.
10. I flashed the .zip, but nothing happened, I don’t see Google Now ANYWHERE?
Just because you don’t see “Google Now” as an available app doesn’t mean it didn’t work. Open the “Google” app or add the “Google Search” widget. These will launch Google Now
If it's really not there, your recovery probably isn't playing nicely with the flashable .zips, in which case follow the Manual Installation instructions in the OP
11. I can’t add calendar entries via Google Now?
This seems to be an issue, but here’s a work around that should work. Google has a feature where you can text a number to add stuff to your calendar. First, you need to setup your Phone as a registered device. Go to www.google.com/calendar, and go to Calendar Settings. Click the Mobile Setup tab, enter your number, choose your carrier (not necessary), and click Send Verification code. Enter the verification code that you get via text, click Finish Setup. Now click Save and we're halfway there.
Now create a new contact on your phone called Calendar, and make the primary number 48368 (which is GVENT). Now you can use Google Now to "Text Calendar Lunch with Mom at Applebee's 1pm on Saturday". The event will be created on your calendar. Doing it this way, you will receive a confirmation text that the event was added as well. Don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but either way, still cool....
12. Why won't NFL Teams show up?
It looks like NFL teams are slowly rolling out. There have been a number of reports of users with m7 getting Football teams (myself included). Also, if you have access to a JB ROM, you can login to now on JB, manually add the football team, go back to your ICS ROM, and the team will still be there. Unfortunately in our version it's still a baseball icon for football
12a. Why can't I manually add sports teams?
AS PER THE OP: The JellyBean update for Google Now, which includes manually adding sports teams, has not yet been ported. Please refrain from asking about this update, since all we're going to do is give you a silly answer to match the silly question.
13. Voice seems to be working, but when responding, Now is cutting off the last word of the response?
Thanks to XDA user educ for finding this - I can’t confirm first hand it works but it looks promising and he said it worked for him - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1780585
14. I installed the “Offline” version, but Now won’t respond to my questions when I don’t have internet connection?
cajunflavoredbob addressed this best - “‘Offline’ means that offline message dictation works. Perhaps that should be made more clear in the op, but even the noobiest should realise that searching the Internet does in fact require the Internet. The offline version doesn't magically cache the whole google network.”
15. Double tapping the home key no longer launches S-Voice?
Install Home2Shortcut - Thanks to ilkevinli for the setup instructions:
“Home2 Shortcut does work. Your just not setting it up right.
1. Go into S-Voice settings and uncheck the "Lauch S Voice by double pressing ..."
2. Lauch Home2 Shortcut
3. In Step 1, choose S Voice
4. In Step 2, choose what you like
5. In Step 3, choose TouchWiz Home
6. In Step 4, hit close
Now when you double click the home button, choose Home2 Shortcut
Have fun.”
16. How can I get the “Swipe Up” gesture to launch Google Now?
Some launchers don’t support this. Two that have been confirmed to work are Holo Launcher and Nova Launcher. You can set the Swipe Up action to launch the “Google” app in Holo, and “Assigning swipe up to Nova setting Voice works AMAZING!!!” (Thanks crutzulee). Other launchers may support this, Sense (Rosie) doesn’t. Let me know about any more confirmed working or not working launchers, stock or otherwise (homeslice976 on xda)
APEX Launcher also works "The "swipe up" gesture works well with these steps: menu>Apex settings>behavior settings>select "swipe up">select "launch app">select "Google">"OK">home. Works great, launches reliably." - @gershomww Thank!
17. After installing this, when pressing the button on my BT headset, it launches the crappy ICS Voice Dialer, can I change this to Google Search?
We've come across 2 ways to accomplish this, however, once you default it to the Google Now Voice Search, it won't listen through the headset, or play Now's audio through the headset, this will all be done via the speaker and mic on the device. But at least it will launch Now Search, and as long as the phone is close to you, your mic should pick you up (Now's voice recognition seems to be awesome). Anyone smart enough to figure out how Voice Dialer can listen through the headset and play it's audio through the headset and can apply it to Velvet?
Method 1: Install Bluetooth Launch from the Market. Move Velvet.apk from /system/app/ to /data/app/ and reboot. Setup Bluetooth Launch to launch Google Search/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox.VoiceSearchActivity. A few users have reported this working for them (though you may need to setup Google Now again).
If after moving Velvet.apk to /data/app/ and rebooting you no longer have Google Search anywhere (app, widget, etc), or if this for some other reason doesn't work, move Velvet.apk back to /system/app/, reboot, and verify Now is working again. Then do this:
Method 2: Uninstall Bluetooth Launch from your phone and reboot. Ensure it's still uninstalled, and no longer in /data/app/ (com.kin.bluetooth_launch-1.apk). Place this (waiting for permission from Bluetooth Launch's dev, Guardian Bob, before sharing publicly. In the meantime, shoot me a PM) modified Bluetooth Launch apk in /system/app/, set permissions to RW/R/R, and install it. Once installed, open the app and set it to launch Google Search/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox.VoiceSearchActivity, then reboot. Now your BT button on your headset should launch Google Now.
18. Google Now seems to have installed properly, and is working, but everytime I open Google Now I have to go through the setup process where I tell it "I'm in", why?
A couple users have reported this issue, and said that by simply flashing the uninstall .zip, then reflashing the mod, it began working properly
19. Other weird issues? Still having trouble and don’t know what to do?
Try flashing the Google Now Remover (http://www.mediafire.com/?whihy17x6q8l31f) and then try flashing the Google Now flashable .zip of your choice and see what happens.

I would really love to see this. Its one of the features I really think makes JB cool.

The actual file is called velvet.apk and I can't get it to work as it is API 16 (jellybean) and its odexed.

There a deoxed version out, but it still doesn't work because like said above the api, is for jelly bean. We need a dev to decompile find change recompile for ics

I hope they can get it to work on ICS, or that my Padfone gets JB quick

I played around with it and got it working on ics. Still buggy and it has no voice support (at least on my phone) yet.
I'll upload the apk later when I'm at home .

me cant wait too.. please devs, do something.

Lol you had minimal sdk version=16 in manifest while ics sdk version is 15
Any updates on voice input? whats the main problem of it not working? It's depending on libs or something?

Should I install this as a normal APK?

Yes it does not require root, install as usual app (does not require to be in /system/app)
I disabled some things in voice input initializing code that require api 16, have to look deeper to resolve this, but i have no free time at the moment, so this will not be done tomorrow
The other idea is to port the missing JB apis to ICS, this should allow other JB apps to run too.
@seahorsepip while playing around with jb apps i changed my api version in build.prop to not require recompile any time - forgot this change for velvet...

Market Fix - Froyo Apps + Tegra 2 Apps

In addition to the standard Market Fix to get protected applications working (clearing cache/data), we also need to trick Google to think we have a Tegra 2 device.
We simply need to change the following line in /system/build.prop
ro.product.device=olympus
This tells Google Market we are using a Motorola Atrix 4G and will give us the missing Tegra 2 apps when applying our market fix.
However, since we are mimicking a phone, Tablet specific apps will not show up (NYTimes app for Tablets is an example)
Cheers!
Edit:
It is well known that the Google Web Market is hit and miss on our GTablets. This thread indicates it may take a few days for our tablet's to show up on the web interface. However, what this fix does is allow you to download most of the Froyo + Tegra2 apps via the Market Application within our tablets. There will be applications that will refuse to install through the web market interface (if your tablet can actually show up on the darn thing) because of missing capabilities, but will install just fine via the Market app.
If you want to install apps using a web browser from your Desktop computer, I recommend the use of Appbrain to generate your list of desired apps and then syncing your list on the tablet to install.
Hi,
SUPER!!
This build.prop change, just by itself, on stock 3588, allows me to see a bunch of apps I haven't been able to see before, including Firefox, Flash, Tank Hero, etc. Didn't have to do anything else, no fingerprint changes, etc.
Thanks!
Jim
AWESOME! The only thing I can't find is message ease which is no great loss and I'm not seeing it on the web either -- I think they are pulling it on and off the market. But YES -- Laucher Pro, Saumari, Silver Creek games, Flash 10.2, tv.com, both opera browsers, dolphin HD -- all there. FANTASTIC. THANK YOU!
Even Vlingo shows up which was never found before. Truth is I don't even want it but it was one of my indicators.

Whoops! Helps if you spell it right. I always think that should be a faster keyboard but then I give up and go back to BetterKeyboard or the word predicting one which is great until you need to do Linux command lines and such.
Sorry for the confusion. I even found Astro Bluetooth Module another I used to have to switch for. Very cool.
Hmmm... the market.android.com site no longer shows my device since I made the above fix! It only shows my older device. I tried just clearing the market cache and rerunning but no go. I am now running the regular market fix (clear cache in market, stop, clear data in service framework, stop, reboot).
I did install things off the market, but it had to be from the device.
Ok tablet is booted back up.... drum roll....
Nope. And now I am -- for now -- only showing my paid apps off the market, none of the freebies I had previously installed.
UPDATE: I killed the market data and cache along with the service framework data and rebooted. This made no difference to the web site (unless it takes time for it to catch up) but it did -- after installing something else -- restore my existing apps. On the other hand, having the market working on the device beats the web site, but it still means something is "off".
How do we request this be made a sticky?
I know I've tried just about every market tweak for the last 3+ months and this is the only 1 that made a huge diff.
Jim
I haven't tried this fix (heck I don't even know how to apply it, someone mind helping a noob out?) but I had the same problem you did where the web market doesn't show your device. I tried spamming the regular market fix and still no good.
However I logged back into the web store today and it showed my device, weird.
Not sure how to fix it but yesterday I changed my password so I was forced to sign in again. Of course that didn't work at the moment but I guess it worked since I can now see my device now.
Hope this helped.

Yeah I tried logging out of the web site and back in. I've tried forcing a google account sync. And I've tried making sure Talk is running (apparently the website uses talk to send things to your device.).
Just for fun I put my ro.product.name/device/board back to Vega and with no reboot or anything the web site immediately found the device.... curious....
Well now that I'm back on the web site, my market is back to how it was even after I put the olympus line in. Getting too late. Will look at it tomorrow :-(

I did the change by:
- get temp root via z4root
- make /system R/W via root explorer
- start a terminal
- cd /system
- Edit build.prop: busybox vi build.prop
- did regular market fix
- reboot

You're right that having market work on the device beats the website! The web market issues may be a whole separate battle.

I'm quite new to the Android OS so I'm not really sure how to do this.
I installed z4root and got temp root. I'm not sure if I needed it as I read somewhere that Vegan 5.1.1 (which I am using) gives me root already.
But I installed it and ran it anyways.
I'm stuck on giving my /system read and write permissions. Is this 'root explorer' app needed? Or can I use my 'iFileExplorer' app to do so, if so how? (It came with the vegan ROM)
Not sure if you meant to type ifileManger, but it will not get you write permissions. Root explorer will allow you to write. It looks as though you may have to
open a terminal up as discussed above, to change the build prop.

Hi,
If you don't have root explorer, there's a free app on market called something like "system mount r/w" that is free that will mount /system as r/w for you. Or, I think that you can do it using a terminal and a mount command (something like mount -remount....).
Normal file explorers won't do the remount.
Jim
mount -o remount,rw /system /system
Watch out for the spaces and you need to be root so do an su command first.
When done, repear the mount command but use ro instead of rw. You can do this with a terminal program or the adb.
Root Explorer is what, $3.99? Worth it for the time savings. I bought the Ti Pro too. $300+ on a tablet...spend $9 on some software to make life easier.
iam a noob. i have stock rom 3588. how do i get market working?
By the light of morning I got back to a full market! But it again broke the web site connection. Is anyone seeing this behavior? Or is it just me?
For the new guys.
1) This appears like it MAY break your connection with the market web site [Update: Wait a few hours and it appears to catch up with you]. It may have other unknown effects. If you are not comfortable with making mods you might wait until more people have reported success or failure with this. For the record I did NOT find this fix (thanks Isira -- see OP of this thread). Just writing up my take on what you need to do. This applies to VEGAn 5.1.1 with supplement. It has been noted that with a stock rom you may need to put "busybox" before commands like cp (which you don't need to use if you have Root Explorer, by the way). If you get this to work (or not) on a different ROM, report it in this thread.
2) That being said, you need a file explorer that will look at / and edit text files, an su utility (comes with your root kit; as far as I know all the custom ROMs are pre rooted) and a command shell/terminal. Or you could spring a few bucks and get Root Explorer which is well worth it and does all of these things. Others have suggested Absolute Root tools which I do not know about. You could also use adb for all of it (which is what I did) but if you know how to do that, you probably don't need me to tell you what to do. We will be changing your build.prop file in the /system directory.
IF YOU ARE NOT USING ROOT EXPLORER GO DOWN TO STEP 3B. IF YOU ARE, GO TO STEP 3A.
3A) Open root explorer. Find /system and press the "Mount R/W" button.
4A) Long press on build.prop and select Copy. Then navigate somewhere like /mnt/sdcard and press the paste button at the bottom of the screen. This is your backup. Please backup.
5A) Go back to /system
6A) Long press on build.prop again. The menu is scrollable. You want Open in Text Editor.
7A) Find the line that says ro.product.device=XXXX (where XXXX is probably Vega). Make it read:
ro.product.device=olympus
Don't change anything else.
8A) Save the file by pressing the menu key and selecting Save & Exit.
9A) Scroll to the top of the /system directory and press the Mount R/O button.
10A) Reboot your tablet. Wait for things to settle down on restart. Open Market. Look for Saumari 2. Look for LauncherPro, Opera Mobile, etc. It will all be there.
If you don't have root explorer:
3B) Open the terminal. At the prompt, enter (spaces and lower case matter):
su
mount -o remount,rw /system /system
HINT: If you think you will do this a lot grab Script Manager off of the market. You can put the mount line in a script, tell it to execute as root (which is the same as su) and then you can run the script when you want to make changes.
4B) Start your file manager and find the /system directory. Your file manager probably starts in /sdcard or /mnt/sdcard. You'll need to go "up" a directory or two to root and then back down. Either way, when you find it, make a backup copy of build.prop somewhere you can write to. Seriously. Do not skip this step. Make the copy.
5B) Edit build.prop. You are looking for a line that sys ro.product.device=XXXX (probably Vega; I don't know about other ROMs and if this works for other ROMs but for VEGAn 5.1.1 its Vega). Carefully replace whatever you have as XXXX to olympus. So the line should read:
ro.product.device=olympus
Note: Some of us had other changes to build.prop. Not clear if these had any effect or not.
6B) Save your changes. If your file explorer is not root, you probably need to save the file to where you can write (your sdcard for example) and the copy from a terminal, such as:
su
cp /mnt/sdcard/new-buildprop.txt /system/build.prop
or
su
busybox cp /mnt/sdcard/new-buildprop.txt /system/build.prop
7B) Open your terminal and enter:
su
mount -o remount,ro /system /system
Remember spaces and case count! Also if you are in the same terminal window as before you don't have to keep entering su since you stay root.
NOTES FOR BOTH SETS OF INSTRUCTIONS
I did the original market fix after saving the file, but some people say it is not necessary. But at least a few people have said they don't see much or anything in market until the redo the fix (the one where you delete the market cache and the google services framework data and reboot).
Things that appear to work:
1) Installing free programs
2) Updating existing programs
3) Amazon market web site oddly enough
4) The official market Web site AFTER WAITING SEVERAL HOURS
5) Buying an app off the build in application
Some of us had other changes to build.prop but I don't think any of them were significant. If you have trouble you might apply it (shouldn't hurt). Also, if your "my apps" only shows your paid apps (or nothing if you have no paid apps), try downloading anything off the market and that will usually restore it. There is also an update local cache key that might do the trick, but loading some freebie off the market is easier. Also check to make sure gtalk is logged in. You can try forcing a resync on your Google accounts (in the main menu under Accounts).
Hope that helps someone. Its early so I probably made mistakes and will edit any that are found.
wd5gnr,
I don't know how "unusual" it is, but on my Gtab, where I had 3452 for awhile, then now 3588, I've always noted that I don't have a "cp" command, so I have to use "busybox cp".
Just FYI, in case anyone encounters this when they try your instructions.

Based on this thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=941205 ), it seems it may take a few days for the tablets to register on the market.
I have 3 tablets and I'm trying to change the identifier for each tablet through the ro.product.model and seeing if each of the tablets will show up on the market. So far, only one tablet is showing on the web market, but it's still using the old ro.product.model identifier (GTablet-TnT-Lite).
However, the web market is still pretty wonky. Certain apps may refuse to install through the web market because of missing capabilities on our tablets, but will install just fine through the market app.

Memory Management (LowMemKiller) Options

Hey all,
Ive been playing with AutoKiller since it came out, and its a fabulous way to manage memory in Android. However, recently I found a mod that not only tweaked the lowmemkiller (android memory management) but also reorganized the service\app priority for best responsiveness.
I started this thread as a forum to discuss the different settings for the SuperCharger script, AutoKiller, and anything that modifies android's memory management. Ive included the default script along w/ a few mods for the different launcher versions. I am leaving the details scarce, as I want you to look at the original thread of instructions and issues resolution.
I am personally using the "Hard-To-Kill" launcher feature tweaked to recognize ADW EX (u just change the name of the launcher in the beginning of the script to com.adw.launcher, or whatever your launcher package name is) and MegaRAM (512+) option and have had good results for the past few hours.
Install Instructions
Install Script Manager from the Android Market (Market Link)
Select the script for your launcher (Ive attached a few)
Long-press and open as a "script\executable"
Select "open as root"
Click Save
Click Run
Follow Instructions & refer to orig thread for details
Share feedback here for others (Please try a setting for at least 12-14 hours before deciding its good\bad, tweaks like this CAN cause slow down after a number of hours of use, yet be incredibly responsive initially.)
Package name for Popular Launchers
ADW EX - org.adwfreak.launcher (attached, remove txt extension)
ADW Launcher - org.adw.launcher (attached, remove txt extension)
Launcher Pro - com.fede.launcher
Go Launcher EX - com.gau.go.launcherex (Thanx richua!)
Stock Gingerbread Launcher (or CM's pre-installed ADW) - com.android.launcher
Try it out, and see how it works for you. Please visit the original thread as it is VERY informative, much more than I could be, and it contains much better instructions to get this up and running

Help???!!! "I dont get it", "I'm getting some strange error in Scripting Manager", "WTF are you talking about?" aka Issues\Questions
There is a step-by-step walk through located here (thanks ruchua!), but this is still experimental and isnt ready for "mass consumption", hence why I was slim on details in the OP. If you REALLY want to try these tweaks but dont want to wrestle with the script, download AutoKiller, donate a few bucks so you get access to the advanced kernel tweaks, enable it on optimum or aggressive, enable all advanced tweaks, and it should have a similar effect w/o all the scripting action.
Enjoy and have fun!
Nice find.
Can't get the files to download.. via the (XDA Premium) app its saying can't open file - via desktop, download unsuccessful. I was anxious to try the files you've provided cause I noticed ADW EX on the name of the files and its not titled that in the original thread.

This is def an advanced tweak that requires some knowledge of Android and app development. If you can follow the walkthrough on the original page, thats great. If not, I would suggest AutoKiller Donate as it does a lot of the same things w/o the scripts.
Please share your thoughts suggestions, experience etc, as Im interested in how this will affect different "style" of users: Id classify myself as a app-heavy user with ~200 apps, while others are much less. Im interested in a memory management setting that will help both sides.
Ive been playing w/ the HTK launcher setting and the 2 "MegaRAM" settings to see how it affects general responsiveness, UI, refresh, and if any apps get kicked out of ram (especially messaging and launcher).

The original author of the thread linked in the OP started talking about this (although a little aggressively, if you ask me...but whatever), but I decided to take a peak at the code anyway. This is a cool script, but it is by no means (end)user friendly and could use some more documentation. The possible bug\glitch between AutoKiller and Faux's kernel (if it exists, I think its a generalized bug) is that enabling the advanced tweak setting for IO scheduler which tells it our phone has no spinning hard disk (all flash memory) causes an immediate reboot back to the kernel's "baked-in" LG logo (the purple one). Disabling that feature fixed that issue, but the "SuperCharger" script has a similar option that ill most likely have a similar result.
Tackling a few points at once here...
The process name for GO Launcher is com.gau.go.launcherex in case anyone else uses that.
Inside GO Launcher settings, there's an option for "system persistent" that I unchecked. There's no explanation as to what that setting does but everything is running smoothly so far. Also in GO Launcher settings as well as LauncherPro (maybe others too but those are the two I use) there's a setting to prevent FC when running out of memory. I kept that checked by default.
Per the dev's suggestion in Faux's thread, my setup is MegaRAM 1 and HTK Launcher. For the past 10 minutes I've been trying to make things lag and frankly, things just aren't lagging. This is much better than any setup I tried with Autokiller, which in its own right is also a very good app. I unchecked all settings in Autokiller so it wouldn't interfere; I will probably uninstall it soon.
The V8 beta for this SuperCharger script and Autokiller's advanced tweaks both have a setting for kernel scheduling, which as some of you may know leads to booty loops. Autokiller was updated today with a change that tries to prevent that but I have not tried it since I hate booty loops and don't even want to risk messing up the great setup I have now. The V8 beta has also been rewritten with the scheduler tweaks commented out. Hopefully this issue can get sorted out. I run the scheduler tweak on my N1 and can't say that it's helping a lot, but it certainly doesn't seem to be hurting.
Seriously, the ROI on running this script is immense. Read the linked OP carefully, follow the directions, and you'll have what feels like a new phone in a few minutes.
@zimphishmonger, I don't know if you follow Paul O'Brien of MoDaCo, but he put out a link yesterday on Twitter for an apk BetterBatteryStats for Gingerbread devices. http://www.cri.ch/sven/doku.php/computing/android/betterbatterystats Have you checked it out? I got it installed and I'm not 100% sure what its doing. I figured it was related to this post being it has to do with utilizing..

agreed!
FWIW, the OP is crazy confusing for non-techies. Oh, the beauty of a step-by-step laundry list!
(Or a flashable...)
Here's a list of what I did to get up and running within a few minutes.
Make a nandroid.
Download Script Manager https://market.android.com/details?id=os.tools.scriptmanager
If you use ADW or ADW EX as a launcher, download the appropriate file to your SD card from the OP of this thread. Continue to step 6.
If you use LauncherPro/LauncherPro Plus or GO Launcher, download the text file from OP of the linked thread titled "V6_SuperCharger_for_Android-update8.sh.txt" either to your phone (if you have a text editor) or to your computer (if you don't). Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=661892&d=1311292674
Open the text file. If you have a "find" feature, look for where it says "com.android.launcher". If you're on your phone and/or don't have a "find" feature, scroll down (not too far from the top) to a line that starts with "launcheradj=" and that's where you'll find "com.android.launcher". Replace com.android.launcher with either com.fede.launcher if you're using LP/LPP or com.gau.go.launcherex if you're using GO Launcher. Make sure you don't delete that space between "pidof" and "com.whateverYou'reUsing", and don't delete that tick mark right after it. Save and exit. If you did this on your computer, upload this file to your phone. (Note: if you are using a launcher not described here, you'll have to find the process name yourself and enter it as instructed above)
Open Script Manager and locate where you just stored that file. Long press on it, select "Open As ...", select "Script/Executable." In the box that pops up, check "Run as root" and then hit "Run" in the top left. The script will now be run. The first prompt will be for scrolling speed. Touch the screen to bring up the soft keyboard. Type the number corresponding to which scroll speed you like and hit enter.
You are now inside the script. IF YOU DID NOT READ ANY OF THE LINKED THREAD, type 8 at the main menu prompt and hit enter on the keyboard, wait for it to do some work and automatically return to the main menu prompt, then type 11 and hit enter and wait, then hit 17 and enter and wait. 17 is the exit command so you'll now see on the top left a button that says "Close." Hit that and then back out of Script Manager, then go to step 9.
If you did read the linked thread, you'll know a little bit more about what each option is. Feel free to experiment. To select an option, type the number of the option and hit enter on the keyboard. Current recommendations are both 8 and 11. Once you are done, type 17 followed by an enter, then hit "Close" in the top left and back out of Script Manager.
Provided you followed the instructions and did not encounter any weird errors in any step, the settings you selected are now active. Nothing else is required. Enjoy your snappy new setup.
I rolled back my settings and typed this list up as I started over from scratch so this almost literally is each and every step I took to get things running. If you have download errors, I suggest not using the XDA app and downloading instead from a standard browser. Make sure you are clicking on the right file. If you didn't read the linked thread and are unsure about proceeding, you should read the linked thread. If you read the linked thread and still are unsure, download the Autokiller app and choose the "optimum" setting there.

This is really good...super clear writing and easy to follow instructions! Thanks for making it so easy for us!!
So does this make a big difference on our devices? I have EB 2.3.5 with faux's kernel and at 1.1 ghz. It's already pretty fast. The before and after benchmark comparison on the OP don't seem to be different. I would like some feedback before I do this let me know! I'll do it in the morning if it's really worth it.

Overall, it has made performance a bit better. I use the same ROM and settings as you, and I agree it's already very good...but these settings are nice. I'm not sure this process can be undone so easily, so it's a valid point you make. But, fwiw, I followed the instructions above and am noticing a difference in performance.

Thanks for the detailed how-to. Please be sure to uninstall and\or disable autokiller to make sure they arent conflicting, as that will def screw with your test results. Also, please run this for at least 24 hours to get a real good idea how it performs after a number of hours. This is a major mod to androids memory management and Im trying to discover if there are any side effects. Thanks for your feedback and testing results. Please keep sharing.

Wanted testing from people who knew what was going on internally, as this is pretty experimental, but this is fine too. Feedback is feedback Try a few different memory settings and see how they work, both MegaRAM and multitasking settings.

This can easily be undone by running the script again, I think its option 8 to "unsupercharge". Thy options should disable all the tweaks made by the script (you did nandroid before, right??).
FEEDBACK: Tested MEGARAM Option 2 (#9 on the script) and it was too aggressive, imo. We don't need that much free ram anyways, its a waste. Testing MEGARAM 1 + HKL (#8 on script) today, and we'll see how it works.

The SuperCharger script completely re-arranging how Android prioritizes its apps in memory (so which ones get killed and when), and tweaks how aggressive Android's internal memory management. Essentially, it is fending off apps from hogging memory and cpu time unnecessarily, and giving important apps like phone, launcher, sms highest priority. The 98kickasskernel script (if you are using it) is optimizing a lot of kernel settings are set improperly\not optimized (almost identical to Autokillers "advances system tweaks"). Thats a very dumbed down explanation, but it gets the idea across .

App removal - bloat (Depreciated thread - See OP for update links)

UPDATE/EDIT: September 12th, 2011 -
I am depreciating this thread and will no longer check on or support it. For more information on this topic:
See MT4GS Stock App Encyclopedia for information about the apps themselves.
See Bloater to make stock app removal easier then you could ever imagine it being.
UPDATE/EDIT: August 21st, 2011 -
Posts 19 through 25 are a summary and how-to of what we have learned about removing apps from the stock rooted rom so far. Skip ahead if you want, otherwise the thread is a good read all the way through.
Now that we have a working S-OFF/Root procedure, a lot of us want to kill some of the stuff that came pre-loaded on our phones.
Root is required, and performing a backup through Clockworkmod is a necessity as well. Both backup and restore actions have been tested and working in CWM 4.0.0.9.
I am not responsible for what happens to your device after removing these files, so make sure you make a CWM backup BEFORE you start mucking around with this.
Some other threads that have been dealing with this for this device are Here, Here and Here. I would like to thank the people who have contributed, and continue to do so in those threads. I made this one in "themes and apps", as I think that people in the future coming in will look here first and this may cut down future confusion and questions.
There are a couple of ways you can accomplish this, but i'll start with the (almost) longest way. See the bottom of the post for other options.
We will be using a file manager to accomplish this task, "File Expert", free from the Google market. (I recommend "Root Explorer", a paid app, but if you've come this far you should get it at some point).
You will need to hit options, choose more, then Mount. Select "Mount as Read Write" to be able to delete the files/folders.
Listed below are the apps and what you have to delete to remove them.
Archived to code tags to make the post smaller. The summaries I wrote out are full page further in the thread, so it's easier to see the whole process.

I have removed all of these apps from my system, and it still runs fine. No problems.
You may get a crash report to send to HTC while removing some of these things (I denied it), but you can ignore it. You will get them it when removing themes for sure.
I don't see why using an app to remove these (like Absolute System) would be an issue - just make sure to go back and manually delete the .odex files, as such apps probably won't get them.
And, of course, you could always use a terminal emulator to (rm) remove the files/folders manually.
Also, for the more adventurous: (but it wasn't a problem)

Have fun!
deleted most of those and got
'uids on the system are inconsistent' every time on boot
careful...
Can you list which ones you removed to cause that?
Also, were you using a theme that you deleted?
CWM backup is vital when starting to mess with this - I haven't had to restore due to system issues.
I'd love to try to duplicate your problem on my phone to find a fix. Thanks!
I prefer not to actually delete apps in case I ever want to unroot (though this probably isn't that likely but still) and I understand that by doing so, those apps need to be present. if any of you are interested, there is a free app on the market that I discovered. just search "antek" in the market and it freezes whatever bloatware you have so that it no longer runs in the background and should you want to recover it, all you do is just "defrost" it and it runs exactly as it did before. I've saved loads of battery by using this.
I'm using a custom theme that wasn't deleted. I understand that I could get the cyanogenmod fix_permissions script to fix this, but haven't located it yet.
I stuck to your list before this happened except for swype and a few others.
Wasn't looking for help with the issue, just wanted to let you know it happened. Ofcourse I made a backup before and after.
fix_permissions didn't solve. Gonna restore and try again. Btw I didn't freeze first, I just deleted. Doubt that's the reason though.

I'm sorry to hear that it's not working out so great for you. Glad to hear you did a backup first though.
It might be good to note, and I should have said it at the beginning, I did a fresh factory reset on my phone just before the S-OFF/Root procedure, and hadn't used any of the things I got rid of.
They were basically just deleted right off the phone before it got used.
Keep us updated on how it's going, and as info comes in i'll add what I can to help. Knowing what apps you got rid of specifically could narrow it down some, and what ones you used first might help as well.
Of course, restoring a backup eliminates the problem, and you may or may not be able to reproduce after - please let us know either way, and thanks for the input!
For our next trick, we're gonna dump HTC Sense.
Blue6IX said:
okay - sorry to post after myself but I got rid of kidzone.
First, I restored a CWM backup I made right after root/busybox installation.
So, my phone state is fresh S-OFF/Root with SU & busybox installed.
It may be important to note that I did a factory reset to my phone just before S-OFF/Root & had a freshly formatted MicroSD card.
I then installed ADW Launcher from the Market, and hit my "home" key. Selected "Use Default" and chose ADW Launcher.
Now my phone defaults to ADW as it's launcher.
I then installed "Absolute System" from the Market, and used it to remove "HTC Sense"
Closed out Absolute System, then scrolled between all 5 ADW desktop screens, powered down the phone, then powered up again. (*NOTE fastboot = off)
Booted fine, was able to ditch sense without issue, and KIDZONE IS GONE!
As always, make sure to do a fresh system backup before messing with anything like this, but Kidzone is linked to sense, and replacing sense with another launcher will remove it.
HTC Sense was the only app removed from the phone, and I haven't checked everything to make sure it works yet, but no HTC crash report to send, and no force close issues. (yet - to be determined)
I've been itching to ditch sense since I got the phone, and this was my first quick test at it. Works good so far.
Edit to add:
Checked the "personalize" option at the top of the "settings" list. This just brings you back to the main desktop, doesn't throw an error.
I knew this one thing would be messed up somehow after ditching sense, but the fact that it doesn't make a problem and just closes the menu is fine by me.
I'll spend the rest of the day testing out my phone without sense to see how it runs. I'll post back how it went tomorrow.

Quoted myself from the kidzone thread, I want to put the info for slimming down my phones apps here.
I'm going to see how the phone runs on just the free version of ADW for a day, then see about coming up with a procedure to remove apps and keep it all stable in the process.
Happy modding!

Also, a thought. Boot to CWM and clear the dalvik cache.
I looked up some info on this since rooting the other day, and after uninstalling apps it's good to do to clear out the old app data. Something to consider - it might solve your problem.

Does the camera app still work after you deleted sense? I wouldn't want to lose that..
I froze "T-mobile Name ID" and everything seems to be working fine.
You might also want to mention that you can temp-root your device, then freeze these apps, and they will stay frozen after reboot. Just, for anyone that doesn't want to perma-root their device right now (like me). It's not very stable to perma-root your device right now. Just read that if your MT4GS dies and your perma-rooted, you will either have to buy a new battery or find a way to charge your battery without your phone... some issue with the HBoot... So till thats fixed, and till i'm sure things are stable. I'll stick with my Temp-Root

The camera app still works, but I haven't used all the features.
I would assume this still does work completely, though, because this is only getting rid of the sense launcher, and not the underlying frameworks that power it. (which I hear the camera is dependent upon.)
A solid day of running ADW instead of sense as my launcher has been fine, i'll go play with the camera for a little while and get back to you with a more complete answer to this.

This had to do with a charging issue using Clockworkmod 4.0.0.8 which is fixed with Clockworkmod 4.0.0.9.
I have personally run my battery to completely dead using CWM 4.0.0.9 and it charged up and booted fine.
Good to know that freezing apps stays after reboot on temp-root, that's an awesome find!
Also, just found this.

Post by rmk40, talking about freezing bloatware apps on the HTC Sensation. There are some apps ppl have frozen on there that are also on the MT4GS. I'm going to look through it now and will check back later.
The Notes app from:
/system/app/androidnotes.apk
Is that it, or is there more in the /data folder?
I think it may be /data/data/com.marigold.android.notes
and /data/data/com.marigold.android.notes/databases/notes
But I don't want to delete it without being fully sure, can someone verify this for me?

Yep, the camera app works completely. I tested all the modes, and used all the different manual settings in the last option. Nothing was broken, it was all fine.
Removing just the sense launcher and replacing it with something else has no impact on the camera, and I would imagine anything else that requires sense frameworks. We should test anything before making that blanket statement, though, but consider camera.apk to be tested and working without the sense launcher.

Post by rmk40, talking about freezing bloatware apps on the HTC Sensation. There are some apps ppl have frozen on there that are also on the MT4GS. I'm going to look through it now and will check back later.

That's awesome - while i'm busy re-inventing the wheel, way to pick up where someone else left off. I glanced through there quickly, but i'm kinda having fun figuring this out. I definitely look forward to hearing what you've learned browsing through, and i'll get there at some point.
Thanks clicked on that helpful post!

The Notes app from:
/system/app/androidnotes.apk
Is that it, or is there more in the /data folder?
I think it may be /data/data/com.marigold.android.notes
and /data/data/com.marigold.android.notes/databases/notes
But I don't want to delete it without being fully sure, can someone verify this for me?

Yep, you were right on. Delete the .apk in bold, then go delete the folder in bold. Once you delete the folder in /data/data, then your second line about the database in notes becomes moot, since it will have already been deleted.
Updated my list of stuff too (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16683780).
One thing i found that I couldn't quite figure out what is was for, is the Com.Redbend.SWM-C app. I've read that it might be used for tracking/analytics or DRM content... i dont know, but I froze it, and everything seems to be working fine still! I read someone had issues with Youtube, but youtube has been working fine for me.
thank you for this thread and thanks to dansl too. I was able to remove sense and a lot of the htc bloatware, making the phone a lot better.
I don't know what doubleshotandroidzipgroup was that was running in the background, but i froze it and it seems fine...
So it seems like this thread has been helping people, in conjunction with the other threads on the different aspects of this subject. I don't deal with freezing apps, it always seemed cleaner to me to just get rid of them.
I know in some cases that's not possible, maybe for us maybe not. I've sure learned a lot from this project, and from what people have discovered by freezing apps.
I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has contributed towards what we've learned here.
I took the time to really work out what has to be done to remove the various things we discovered, and the next few posts reflect the contributions everyone has made to this project.
Also, i'm hoping that this road map we are making will cut the time down it takes for developers to introduce roms for our device. Having the locations, and user test data of what you can dump should take some of their headache away. This is one of the motivations behind my trying to lay this all out like this, making it easier not only for us to use now, but for developers to refer to later.
Enjoy, i've had fun with it so far!
There was an initial surge of testing what could or could not be removed from the phone right after we got root, which has mostly passed now. Most of the obvious "I can get rid of this" stuff has been figured out, and the rest of the things we can safely get rid of will take a closer look and involve a bit of head scratching to figure out.
Meantime, I felt like it was a good idea to summarize what we know a bit, and come up with a good procedure for removing stuff that was both simple and stable. You could (and I, as well as others, have) delete(d) this stuff all at once without issue, but i'm more comfortable with a more cautious approach - and I know others will be too.
To that end, i've taken the time to test this method a few times, re-engineer it, tweak things, change the order up a bit, and finally lay it out here. We all pretty much want to get the most out of our phones, and for almost all of us here the "extras" pre-installed on our phones get in the way of this.
This'll be fun, and pretty painless - so - ready to remove some bloat?
Setup 1: We're going to go backwards in time a few steps. The ideal situation here is:
00 - Backup all phone data to somewhere off the phone itself.
01 - Factory reset phone, power down.
02 - Remove microsd card, format in computer.
03 - re-insert microsd card in phone, power on.
04 - Set up your Gmail account, enable the Market on your phone.
05 - S-OFF (if necessary), installing CWM 4.0.0.9 and Rooting your phone.
06 - Installing Busybox and Root Checker, verifying that both root and busybox are obtained/available on your phone.
07 - Uninstalling Busybox installer, checking Busybox installation in Root Checker again, then uninstalling Root Checker.
08 - Power down your phone, and boot into recovery mode.
09 - Make a CWM backup of your system in recovery, then rebooting your phone.
10 - (optional, but recommended) Making a copy of the CWM backup to another place, like your computer.
If you did/do it this way then you can always restore to a clean CWM backup from right after you got Root & Busybox on your phone, in the cleanest ready state it can be.
Otherwise, do a CWM backup of your system now, before following the instructions laid out below to be able to restore your phone if something goes wrong.
I'll try and help anyone who needs it if something doesn't go right, but please understand you do this at your own risk and backups are your best friend!
Setup 2: Tools.
01 - Install Root Explorer.
+ Other file managers may work with varying degrees of success, and there are some free alternatives, but nothing that will do the job like Root Explorer. I highly recommend this app, and if you're going to be doing this kind of stuff on your phone you should probably pick it up. You at least need a file manager capable of read/write access to your system folders, and that can copy and delete.
02 - Install Absolute System Root Tools.
+ Again, there are probably free alternatives out there, but this program is pretty awesome and I recommend it. You should have an app that lets you uninstall system apps, and lets you clear their data before uninstalling. One thing to note, is that it won't delete the .odex files of installed apps, so you'll have to go back and get them manually with Root Explorer.
03 - Before performing any steps listed below, you should make backups of all the files you will delete. I list the locations of everything so you can navigate to it with Root Explorer and copy the files somewhere else, like your sdcard. I would also go so far as to say you should make a CWM backup before attempting each of the steps below, but i'm overly cautious when it comes to backups - that's up to you.
(You could end up making changes in files you aren't working in, without realizing it. A Nandroid backup is the only way to ensure you can restore those files if that should happen)
** - Use Absolute System to uninstall .apk files listed below, and it will also get the /data/data location as well. You will have to go back and get the .odex files manually. If you choose not to use an app to uninstall the .apk files listed below, I wrote out their full path location so you can use Root Explorer to delete them manually.
** - Changes made to /system/etc are mirrored in /etc as soon as you make them. All changes made in /system/ are mirrored in the main directory in any corresponding folders or files in real-time as you make them.
** - I recommend removing all widgets and shortcuts/folders or any other items that may be on your desktop before starting this process. You can always put back anything that survives later when you are done.
** - It might be a good idea to turn off GPS, Mobile Networks, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi before proceeding. Optional, but recommended.
Feel free to skip any apps you want to keep along the way, and you don't necessarily have to go in order, but it'll be cleaner that way. Part of the organization behind it is to make it easy for the user to remember what they are doing, and break it down into smaller blocks so you'll lose less progress if something goes wrong.
Now that we're past all that, lets get down to business.
Part 1: Stock themes and wallpapers.
00 - Make sure your phone is set to the "System" theme before continuing (default theme). Then take a picture with your camera, or get a picture you like on your phone. Set this as your background wallpaper.
01 - Using Absolute System, uninstall the stock themes:
-com.tmobile.theme.Aubergine
+ /system/app/Aubergine.apk
+ /data/data/com.tmobile.theme.Aubergine
-com.tmobile.theme.Brooklyn
+ /system/app/Brooklyn.apk
+ /data/data/com.tmobile.theme.Brooklyn
-com.tmobile.theme.Jazz
+ /system/app/Jazz.apk
+ /data/data/com.tmobile.theme.Jazz
-com.tmobile.theme.Retro
+ /system/app/Retro.apk
+ /data/data/com.tmobile.theme.Retro
-com.tmobile.theme.Spring
+ /system/app/Spring.apk
+ /data/data/com.tmobile.theme.Spring
02 - Using Absolute System, uninstall the stock live wallpapers:
-com.android.wallpaper (Android Live Wallpapers)
+ /system/app/LiveWallpapers.apk
+ /data/data/com.android.wallpaper
-com.htc.android.wallpaper (HTC Sense Live Wallpaper)
+ /system/app/Mode10Wallpapers.apk
+ /data/data/com.htc.android.wallpaper
-com.htc.android.image_wallpaper (HTC Slide Show Wallpaper)
+ /system/app/HtcImageWallpaper.apk
+ /data/data/com.htc.android.image_wallpaper
-com.android.magicsmoke (Magic Smoke Wallpapers)
+ /system/app/MagicSmokeWallpapers.apk
+ /data/data/com.android.magicsmoke
-com.android.musicvis (Music Visualization Wallpapers)
+ /system/app/VisualizationWallpapers.apk
+ /data/data/com.android.musicvis
-com.htc.livewallpaper.streak (Streak Live Wallpaper)
+ /system/app/HTCLivewallpaperStreak.apk
+ /data/data/com.htc.livewallpaper.streak
Okay, we are done with Absolute System for the moment.
Fire up Root Explorer, and go to:
03 - /system/app/ (delete the files: )
-HtcImageWallpaper.odex
-HTCLivewallpaperStreak.odex
-LiveWallpapers.odex
-MagicSmokeWallpapers.odex
-Mode10Wallpapers.odex
-VisualizationWallpapers.odex
Still in Root Explorer, now go to:
04 - /system/customize/resource/ (delete the files: )
-htc_wallpaper_01.jpg
-htc_wallpaper_01_lockscreen.jpg
-htc_wallpaper_02.jpg

-tmo_wallpaper_preview_05_land.png
-tmo_wallpaper_preview_06.png
-tmo_wallpaper_preview_06_land.png
-wallpaper.jpg
-wallpaper.png
Still in Root Explorer, last place to go is:
05 - /system/etc/ (delete folder: )
-slideshow
(These are all the sample images for the HTC slideshow live wallpaper.)
06 - Exit Root Explorer, Reboot your phone to recovery. In CWM choose advanced and then "Wipe Dalvik Cache". Hit back and then "Wipe Cache Partition". Reboot your phone. (It will take a little while longer to boot since you wiped your cache, but not much)
After booting back up and making sure everything still works:
07 - Reboot into recovery, make a CWM Nandroid backup of your system. Make sure to back this up somewhere off the phone too.
Congratulations! You now have a recovery image of your phone with all of the stock themes and wallpapers removed.

[App] [2.2+][1.7] Tdl Todo List 11/14/13

A program to organize todo's/tasks in a treeview form.
It's an Android version of Abstract Spoon's hierarchical ToDoList program:
http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/5371/ToDoList-6-4-Feature-Release-An-effective-and-flex or http://www.abstractspoon.com
Use it to keep track of to do's or for project management. The outline can have as many sub-levels as you want, or the list can be viewed "flat".
The task list can be viewed in a Gannt chart in the desktop application.
Add, view and edit your list on your phone, then use the same list on your computer. If you put the file in your DropBox folder, it will automatically be synced.
Files are stored in user defined folders on the sd card (can use any level of sub-directory).
Integrates with File Managers, DropBox and Google Drive. However, files opened in Google Drive, cannot be saved directly.
Choose dark or light theme
Move item around with cut and paste.
List can be sorted based on due date (can also use calculated dates), category, title, completion or priority, risk, status, allocated to, or it can be unsorted.
Home screen widget shows tasks due today.
Set alarms and be reminded when your task is due.
Can be integrated with the Minimalistic Text Widget (if installed).
Completed items can be hidden from view.
Backup your file manually, or do it automatically every time there is a change.
Completed items can be hidden from view.
Notes are available from main list, and hyperlinks are clickable.
List can be filtered based on title, priority or due today (other filters will be added later).
List can be searched based on title.
Notes are available from main list, and hyperlinks are clickable.
Collapse/expand all.
Currently supports editing of these fields:
-title
-start date
-due date
-completed
-priority
-status
-category
-risk
-percent done
-allocated to
-notes
-recurrence
Future plans:
-Export as google task
-Receive text from other apps
-Native Dropbox sync
-UI improvements
Because this is a beta version, every time your list is saved, the previous version will be saved too (6 good backups are kept). (This feature can be turned off in the settings menu.)
NOTE: For people who have issues with the app:
- concrete suggestions would be appreciated
- errors: send me an email with the steps that caused the error. Some phones doesn't have any issues at all, so it's been difficult to pinpoint why others do.
Since the original desktop version of this program is constantly being developed, some of the features available on the desktop might not work on the Android version.
Uninstall:
Any list files stored on the sd card will be left after uninstallation.
LIMITATION:
If the notes field has more than about 8000 characters, the note field will appear blank.
If the file is big, it might take a while for it to load (it's also possible it will crash). Reported to be a problem on a file of 700kb (will have to do some more testing on this).
DISCLAIMER:
This is still being developed as a hobby, and is not a final version. It is being developed as I see fit, have time and am interested in doing it. THERE IS NO WARRANTY THAT THIS PROGRAM WILL WORK on your Android phone or tablet. I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE IT MAY CAUSE.

Updated version
Sorry about the bug on the settings screen. I hope this is fixed now.
Some users have reported crashes on the main screen.
I would appreciate some more information on when that happens.
Hi,
Firstly just to say I am in love with the idea of this app, I use TDL on my desktop and would love to be able to sync those to my phone.
But the sync isn't working for me - here's what I'm doing and what errors I get, I hope this can help, would really appreciate any suggestions
I created a new to do list in the desktop version and made sure it was saved as a Tasklist (not unicode). My TDL program is already in my dropbox, so I created a rule in dropsync to sync the tasklist folder to a folder on my phone
When I open the file from the list in the mobile app I get 'No Items' and an error
If I add a task from the mobile version I get an error message on screen 'nextuniqueid=null'
I tried to sync the to do list back to the dropbox and open it in the desktop version, and I get this
The XML contains one line
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="WINDOWS-1252"?>
Any ideas as to where I'm going wrong? If you need any more info please ask!
Thanks!
Jon
Thanks for the feedback and the fact that you report it here instead of sending an email . It would be great if everyone who has issues could use this thread, so everyone can benefit from any solutions I might have.

This is because the document wasn't created properly, and it's not possible to add to a nonexisting dom document. (which means I need to figure out why it's not created properly first).

Well, you are not doing anything wrong! I'm afraid it's a bug that I'm struggling with. I have fixed a few small issues, and will release an update today hopefully, but I don't think it addresses the issue you are having. I also realized that I had hard coded the sdcard in some places, although again, that shouldn't be the issue.
Here is my suggestions, questions to anyone who have this issue:
Does it happen for all the files or just some of them?
Try to change the encoding on both the desktop and the phone.
Can you create a list on your phone, edit it on the computer, and then read it again on the phone?
Can you put the file in a different directory and see if that works?
Also please note the android version you are running, in case that's the isssue.
For the people who don't have any issues (including myself), maybe you could let me know your android version?
I'm sorry, this seems to be a big issue, and it's taken a lot of time and more to come, so any help is appreciated.

Now this, seems to work until I read it from the desktop. It does, however create four versions. (file is called new list from phone)

Problems in Google Play with TDL Android
I were able to install the first versions of android TDL from android market, but now, when I try to install it from Google Play there is a mesage that says that it is not compatible with my htc wildfire S. It is not really compatible? can i install it anyway? How can i solve the problem? Thank you

That's strange. I haven't changed anything (as far as I know) that should have affected that.
I'm running a lower version of Android and it works fine.
Why don't you try the new version and let me know. In the meantime I'll do some more testing.
I have the new version, but I'm still not able to navigate to the SD card? Can you explain how it should work? This is what I see?

The list you see are all the (non-hidden) directories on the sdcard. If you have files in the root of the sd card, just click on the first blank entry.
If the directory has subdirectories, after clicking on the directory, you will have to enter the path to the file manually. I'm hoping to change that in a later version.
So assuming you have your files in a subdirectory called Tdl under the AbstractSpoonTDL directory, you select AbstractSpoonTDL and will be shown an input box where you would enter AbstractSpoonTDL/Tdl/
Hope this clarifies your question.
Can´t install`TDL from google play
What exactly it is said In google play Is: This aplication is not compatible with your vodafone HTC HTC Widfare S
And when i try to install it from google play web I just cant do it. Google play asks me to select another device to install it, and when i select my only device (HTC Widfare S) It says it is not compatible with my device.
May it has some relation with the fact that I rooted my device?

I assume you mean Wildfire S. According to the list on my developer console, it says the app is available for HTC Wildfire S (marvel). The only permission the app needs, is to write to the external card, which I assume you have?
The only unsupported devices shown are G1 and Touch Viva.
I've seen reports of compatibility issues if it has a big file, but my app is pretty small. I need to do some more research, but from what I've seen so far, it's a difficult issue to pinpoint.
When I have a stable version, I may attach it to the thread here.
The fact that your phone is rooted, shouldn't be a problem - mine is too. What version of Android are you running? Are you running a stock rom, with stock google play?

Cool, thanks, confusingly, on both my devices I have an internal SD card (internal memory) and an external one (the microsd card). So I see the root of the internal SD card. This isn't a problem for me, but didn't know whether it gave any clues about what as going on?
Also, I tried the app on my Xoom as well, and get the same error, which leads me to think its something to do with my desktop?
Thanks again, any other help I can be let me know?
Thanks!

One user reported that if the file was in a directory without space in the name, it works. You could try that.
But I do agree that the internal sd could be the issue.

"Actually, for some devices the getExternalStorageDirectory() will return localization for internal memory (internal SD card). The removable SD card is located as mount point below, usually getExternalStorageDirectory()+"/sd" or getExternalStorageDirectory()+"/external_sd".
Unfortunately, there is no standard for this and you won't know what kind of storage you are pointing at."
Which means at this point I don't have a workaround. But if it's the space-in-the name-bug, I'm hoping the next update will fix it.
Can you open the file from a file explorer on your phone?

Google play keeps saying: This app is incompatible with your Vodafone HTC HTC Wildfire S. And if i try to install it i get the same mesage... Dont know if someone else has the same problem
Im runing a rom wich is called Rom-Chucky 3.5 the fact is that I instaled TDL in my device before i instaled Rom-Chucky 3.5, but i cant install it again but after installing that rom I've instaled others programes from google play. and ive just checked some other programs in google play and they all say they are all compatible

Well, if it worked before the new rom, but not after, it could be related to the custom rom. I don't really know what else to suggest, since I didn't add anything that should not make it work. I have read that some custom roms, have these compatibility issue when there are screen size differences.
You could either try a different rom or contact the maker of the rom.
Sorry if I'm not more helpful!
Cant install TDL from Google play
I have asked some friends to try to download the app from google play (they have diferent android devices), and they all get the same mesage I send you and image

I have made some changes and uploaded a new version. Please let me know if it works.
If not, it would be helpful if you could send me the tdl.log file located in the root of your sd card. That should have some information on the paths to the files.

How To: Access To Google Play Music Outside of the United States [February 5, 2013]

I have read through a number of these How-To's online and had struggled through most of them with little success. My struggles were due to my slow internet, among other things, and the lack of reliability and up-to-dateness of these methods. I will present a thorough method for accessing the full potential of Play Music outside of the USA, and am confident that this will have positive results for those of you who have had no success with alternative methods.
1. Currently, you can download Play Music from the Play Store onto your device. If you haven't already done this, go ahead and do it now.
2. Go to tunnelbear.com and download it for your applicable operating system. Install it onto your computer. At some point, you will have to sign up. Do this. It will be worth the hassle. Use a real email as you will have verify your information.
3. Run the installed program on your computer. Once you verify your email, you can sign in. The program will want to install another internet connection. Let it. When the program is open there will be a window with two knobs. Ensure the one on the right is switched to US and then switch the one on the left to ON.
4. TunnelBear will configure and start doing its thing. Once it is connected, come back to this browser and open a new tab (or whatever you want). Then, type in music.google.com into the address bar and go to the site. Sign in using your Google account. Then, it will bring you to the Play Music page.
5. A window should pop up in front of the page asking you to Accept certain conditions. If not, maybe clicking on the Upload Music on the upper right of the page should do the trick. Continue to follow the instructions, accepting the conditions and 'buying' the app. After the first two steps of this process, using other methods, a circular blue loading ring would come on the screen and nothing would follow. By using this method, the loading ring will appear for a short time, and then a new window will pop up asking you to purchase the application.
6. Continue following the steps until you come to the step that requires an American Credit Card. I already have my (Canadian) credit card on file. When I went to select it from the list, it stated that it could not be used, so click to add a new payment method / credit card.
7. Simply enter the same credit card information (or the accurate information for any credit card you have). For the country, leave it as United States. Enter your full name (the name on the card). For the Post Code, find any legitimate American zip code online and punch it in. Click to accept and it should go through. Since it is not actually charging the card, it shouldn't really make a difference.
8. Then you will eventually be prompted to install the musicmanager.exe, which should be installed onto your computer. Following through the installation steps, you will be asked which file it will take music from to upload. I started with a new folder that I put a small amount of songs into, since my internet is quite poor and the upload speeds are minimal.
9. Now, grab your device. Ensure that the Play Music app is installed, but not running in the background. Go to
Settings > (Device) Apps > (Downloaded) Google Play Music. Click Force Stop and then Clear Data.
10. Close this. Make sure some music has been uploaded via the Music Manager. Then, go to
Settings > (Accounts) Google. Click on the account associated with your music manager (the one you used to sign in) and sync the account. Once it is fully synced, open your Play Music app and the uploaded songs should start compiling into the app!
I did this last night with success. My struggles with other methods leads me to believe that I am not the only one. That is why I made this.
Hopefully this works for you! I may have missed something or used the wrong wording in some parts, but the idea is the same and I'm sure you will manage.

I have tried it with tunnelbear, private internet access, express vpn and hola. It doesn't work. I don't get past the first stage. I get the message The Google Play music player is currently available in select territories. This message I get even if the VPN is not activated. I have already updated a US address as billing and delivery in my wallet account. Apart from that a US card is also updated.
