Wifi drops - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My wifi keeps dropping im not sure if its my wifi fault or from the new update 4.4.2 anyone else have this issue on 4.4.2?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

I'm fine on 4.4.2
Sent from my Nexus 5

yeah I noticed the WiFi reauthorises the key every ten minutes since some WiFi updates on the kernel a while back, these have now made it to 4.4.1/2.. check your logcat for 'wlan' to see
turn off your router and wait a minute before powering it back on and you should be ok for a while. some routers will cope with this better than others

Wifi issues from standby 2.3.4

just wondering if anyone else has experienced issues with their wifi re-connecting after waking up from standby since 'upgrading' to 2.3.4? Mine used to be flawless, but now regularly experiences problems where it wont connect for ages or i have to restart the wifi or reboot.
Mine too would take awhile before re-connecting.
How long is "ages" for you? I never had to reboot the phone, but I have resorted to restarting wifi.
Yeah..weird, I have the same issues. Thank goodness I'm not the only one. Seems to take the wifi a min to kick in coming from standby. And its greyed out once it comes on...so goto takes ANOTHER minute for it to turn green! What gives?
Hopefully, this new patch will solve these issues...fingers crossed!

'Ages' would probably be a minute or so? This morning i had to exit the browser and restart wifi to get it working again. Not a major hassle but a bummer considering it worked so well before!
My Nexus S has the wi-fi re-connect issue as well. It takes a while to connect, sometimes it's immediate and somtimes up to two minutes.

There's a patch?
Yeah Sprint is releasing an OTA fix July 11 that will make the phone have better 'signal acquisition'...we can only hope right?

Wifi issues since ics update

I don't know if anyone else is having this issue or not but since I updated to ics UCLD2 and UCLE2 on both updates I seem to drop wifi connection every few minutes. Every few minutes I see a box come up that says connected to belkin. I know its actually dropping it because at times I will look up at the status bar and the wifi symbol that shows your connected won't be there then it will come back on and say connected to belkin. Its something in the phone because all the other devices on wifi in the house isn't having this problem. Anyone having or have had this problem? Any solutions? My wifi is set to never sleep and I've tried several wifi fix apps on the market and I've tried changing wifi channels still no luck..

It done it all the time on the previous leak ucld2. I thought the problem was fixed with this leak because it did fine for a couple of days it only done it a few times. But now its gets worse everyday. As long as I'm in the living room where the router is it only drops every now and then but in my bedroom away from the router it does it every few minutes....

The only thing I could suggest is flashing romracers radio he pulled from the leak. Flash it once, wait a minute, then flash it again and wait 30 seconds and reboot. It may help, it may not.
OK I don't why but I read somewhere that the skyrocket don't deal with wpa and psk security to good so I removed the security off my wifi connection and renamed it something other than belkin. I did this about oh 4 hours ago and I have not lost connection once which is great but now my wifi is wide open with no security. Guess Ill have to put my monitor on it that will let me know if more than 5 devices are connected....

Are you able to run security on your home wifi or do you just have it open? My wifi works better and faster than ever with not one disconnect as long as there is no security key to logon to the wifi. Its crazy I've never had this problem with any other device. And none of our other phones which include captivate infuse HTC status or our friends iPhone or laptops does it only my phone and only since the Android 4.0 upgrade. I flashed back to my nanadroid gingerbread backup earlier and it connected with no problems with the security on but soon as I flash back to ics is drops every few minutes until I turn the security off. So I tried the gingerbread modem with the ics and still the same drops every few minutes only with the security on. So I don't know I'm just leaving my security off and maybe when the official update comes out it will have a fix...

Im not actually at home, I am running on hotel wifi which is not secure. So I can't test that for you.
My SR has had near flawless wifi in multiple networks / security types, on 2.3.5 /6 GB and on UCLE2. The 1 exception is my home router, where it would make the secure connection, but the broadband DNS server seems to block its data connection. This affected Cappy also, resolved both with static settings. The only wifi adapters I've seen needing open settings either needed newer drivers, or were damaged ones needing replacement. One workaround for your 5 at home is a MAC filtering list.
As for wifi issues,
the only serious wifi issues I had was when using Facebook. It simply could not hold a connection. Browser, any other apps all seemed to work fine.

My wifi router is a belkin and I just recently purchased it a couple of months ago so do you think it could be bad? Also when I go to my mother in laws she has a AT&T 2 wire wireless router with security on it and my phone does it there to. Given the other phones work well it seems like a fault in your phone, not the routers. One troubleshoot/workaround is to enter appropriate static IP settings as detailed in posts 1 & 7 here. That will either stabilize it or show you need to reimage the phone with full wipes to test further. You can screenshot most of the settings you need using the Ipconfig app by Mankind, during a good connection. Just take care to choose a static address outside of the router's assignable DHCP range, to avoid conflicts.
The same issue exists on the recently rolled out official ICS update for the Galaxy Note, I'm having this problem with stock radio and no root.

As long as I'm connected to an open wifi connection it works just fine but if I secure it it constantly disconnects. I'm starting to wonder if its a Samsung problem now because my wife's Samsung infuse on gingerbread is doing the same thing. And its not just my home wifi it does it at friends house with secure wifi and at mother in laws to with secure connection but never on any open connection. Um my daughters two HTC phones does not have this problem so I'm starting to think maybe its a Samsung problem. I don't think its an android problem cause both the gingerbread phone and my ics phone is doing the same thing. If it is android its something in gingerbread that carried over to ics

Had same problem
I had the same issue , went from 2.3.6 Gingerbread to the ICS UCLE2 leak and my wi-fi would turn on and off , so I just started from scratch went back to 2.3.4 via Odin , updated to 2.3.6 and flashed back to the UCLE2 leak via Odin and now it's working fine , I kinda figured it was a glitch in the software somewhere , from where I had changed rom's so many time's , and apparently it was , hope this was helpful.

WiFi issues?

Is anyone else noticing that their WiFi doesn't exactly drop, but just stops working apparently at random?
I notice this when sending a message via Hangouts, it won't send for a minute or two. Just three bouncing dots. My WiFi still shows connected, but the message doesn't send.
Same with Hangouts video chat. It will freeze up on me, and have a poor connection/experience, but when I switch to T-Mobile's network, no issues.
I haven't had this WiFi issue on any other devices in my home. (Droid Incredible, Galaxy Nexus, HP Touchpad w/Jelly Bean).

Just received mine, I'll check it on my home Wi-Fi. My work Wi-Fi is suspect because the building is old and we've had a tough time getting things to work around here. Lol.

Artem Russakovskii posted on g+ that the nexus 5 has issues with networks that use a 5 ghz signal. Apparently using another channel solves the problem. Similar to the issues chromecast/nexus 7 has on 5 ghz networks. Changing it is worth a shot, most routers have an option to change it.
edit: (assuming you are using a 5 ghz channel)

Just happened to me again with YouTube. Video stopped playing half way through. The only way to get the video to finish was to turn off wifi and switch to LTE. I had wifi optimization off, and I do not have a 5GHz router.

Even though my router is not 5 GHz I just went into my phones settings, WiFi, Advanced and changed the WiFi Frequency band from Auto to 2.4 Ghz. Maybe that will help? It seemed to work right away without me having to turn wifi off and on again so there is that. I need to use it awhile though.
Do you have any antivirus programs running? I had to uninstall mine because it was causing wifi issues.

I've been having some pretty terrible Wi-Fi reception. Especially on my school's campus. There will be a router on the ceiling directly above me, and I'll get like one or two bars maybe, and terrible speeds.
Just tried turning off Wi-Fi optimization, maybe it'll work better.
UPDATE: This seems to have fixed it. I just downloaded an app at 6 MB/s from the play store in the same spot I've always had problems.

I am having the same issue with my N5, there's a thread at Android Central discussing this issue: http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-nexus-5/329226-nexus-5-wifi-problem-4.html
Basically, if I watch a YouTube video that's at least 5 minutes long, I won't be able to finish it as the video will pause at least one or two minutes after starting. This is not YouTube buffering the video either, the video will just pause forever.
Another test is open up Chrome and type words into the URL bar. Auto suggests will appear, if I keep doing this, sooner or later there will be no auto suggest appearing, suggesting network connection is either dropped or became very slow.
I am connecting to an Asus RT-N16 router in 2.4Ghz N mode. Tried turning off Wifi optimization, and other router settings (20Mhz spread, G only mode, other frequencies, etc) and same problem persists.
Since this problem is not as common, I am suspecting this maybe a router incompatibility between N5 and Asus Rt-N16. Anyone reading this thread, if you are having this (or not) issue, please post your router model + settings. Thanks.
I have (2) N5's, a white one and a black one. The black one is very "flaky" with regards to wifi and battery drain. I initially noticed the problem with battery drain where it would drop 20% in two hours with <1m of screen time. It would also go from 100% to 4% over the course of a day with <50m of screen time. I initially did not use the phone much as I was trying to figure out the drain problem, but now that I have been using it more, I've experienced wifi drop outs, where the signal indicator shows connected with a strong signal. I have never experienced that amount of battery drain or any wifi problems with the white one. Both connect to the same routers. I have an Asus 802.11AC router at home. The only AC devices I have are the N5's and my laptop, but the laptop and white N5 has never had trouble. At work I have several TP-Link 802.11N routers in the ceiling throughout our building and a Netgear 802.11N router in our IT sandbox lab. I've tried changing channels, 2.4 vs 5Ghz, updating router firmware and performing factory resets on my home router and the Netgear at work, all to no avail. I've done factory wipes on both phones many times trying to find some reason for one to behave in such a way where the other does not. All I can come up with is that the black one is defective. What's worse, some days the black one will work just fine on wifi and I'll see expected battery drain.
Another update: I went to Paradise Bakery (sandwich shop with free wifi) to test out the wifi. The N5 connected to the wifi fine, but unable to get pass the 'Agree to EULA' login page. I brought along my work HTC One and it was able to connect and get pass the agreement page with no problems. I am beginning to think there's something wrong with the wifi on my N5.

Wifi - phone or router?

Every couple of minutes my N5 disassociates then reassociates itself with my router (BT HomeHub 4). Have tried wifi fixer app, setting static ips and replacing router and changing wifi channels . Other devices connected to router are fine so can only assume issues lie with the phone given the wider wifi issues around connecting to saved wifi spots and download speeds etc. I don't have these problems just these constant drop outs and reconnections. Am running CM nightlies and Elemental-X kernel. What would give the best hope of a fix. New Rom/kernel/radio/data wipe or all four? Or does my problem lie with the router? Any advice welcome as it is really irritating - particularly as I get no mobile service at home! Thanks

plagued? i have never had a problem with wifi.
what wifi type are you using? N? G? AC?
Try the common WiFi work arounds: setting your phone to only use 2.4Ghz (instead of 5Ghz or Auto) and toggling off the mobile data setting when using WiFi.
Well 4.4.3 seems to have made absolutely no difference.
Maybe it's faulty. If you've already tried another router there's not much else it can be. Try and get it repaired or swapped out.
I've not had a homehub 4, but never had Nexus specific issues with my HH 3 or 5.

[Q] Nexus 5 WiFi issue

Hello everyone.
So, the wifi problem on my N5 goes back some time ago; it happened for the first time about 2 weeks after i got it, middle november i'd say:
i always keep my wifi connected while at home and sometimes it just refuses to send data anymore. The signal bar doesn't drop, but the data just stops working. I don't remember what i did the first time it happened, but it just started working as intented after a few days.(I was on 4.4.4 back then).
Now I'm on 5.0.1 and it had been working right for some time, until 2 days ago i unplugged my router then plugged it back it. Later that day I noticed the issue is back. I have absolutely no idea what to do about it and it is irritating as hell.
Did any of you guys experience this before? If so, how did you fix it?
Also, is it possible that this is a driver issue on the phone side? All my other devices work just fine on wireless.
Thanks!

you may also try forgetting your network and re-logging back in. also check the wifi frequency band and of course rebooting your router can’t hurt.

I tried all that but with no success. I think the router might be the issue since it does have some glitches where it loses connectivity and it fixes after a reboot. I'll try with another router and report after.

I have done a full factory reset on my phone due to this issue, and it still happens. It doesn't just happen at home either, it happens everywhere I go. I am assuming at this point that it is a bug in 5.0/5.0.1 and hopefully it will be fixed in 5.0.2 (if the N5 ever see's this update).
If anyone has had any luck with this bug, please let me know.
I'm having the same issues. I'm now on my 4th router in as many months and I can't figure this out after testing just about every possible configuration of channels, frequencies and settings. We have about 10 devices connected in my home and the Nexus 5 is the only device with this problem. I'm at the point now that I just use LTE at home.
Yeah it's a 5.0.1 issue, if you've found your way to XDA you should try a custom ROM. Most are branched from the aosp 5.0.2 commits.

Did Lollipop rid the wifi options of "wifi optimization" and "avoid poor connections?" I used to keep those options unchecked for a more stable wifi connection.

But I had this same problem on 4.4.4 for a little while, that's why I was inclined to think it was something to do with my router.
Ahhh okay, yeah it very well could be.
I just had to replace my logic board due to faulty wifi, I got the always 'WiFi turning on' bug.

That setting checkbox was missing in advanced wifi settings since 5.0 (and the option was forced to "on")
According to this post this has been fixed in 5.0.2:
