just curious. why you people still using nexus s as your main phone? as you know there are tons of greater phones right now.
start from me first. i still using nexus s cause i don't have money to upgrade it.
what about you?
I want a nexus 4 but it's not yet available in my country.

First reason - money, second - don't need anything better at the moment

'Coz devs keep updating it. It's not yet dead.
Still works great for me. Until a few days ago I was still running a cm nightly from Oct without any issues. The only reason I jumped to cm10.1(which runs beautifully) is because I just picked up a N7 and have got that flashing bug again . Been able to upgrade since august......have no reason to......figure I'll ride out the contracts on my other two lines and then either upgrade if sprint finally has LTE here in metro D or jump ship to TMo or ATT. Gives me and my ns4g 8 more wonderful months together
Craft. Beer.
1. Cost of a better replacement
2. Still up-to-date and runs stable
3. Small enough to fit in my shirt pocket comfortably
4. A friend painted the back cover bright red in an auto bodyshop (see pic). Looks cool with the Body Glove case on

Same for me! But when I saw for the first time the Nexus S with its special curved screen, for me there was no doubt about which device to buy! If the nexux 4 was curved like the Nexus S would have started walking to go to Germany to buy even paying 200 € more. Excellent aesthetics, supported (although I think the backers are falling), and Google!

For me it's a size thing - I find the newest crop of phones too large, especially with a case on. Nexus S is just right.
OP Moved to Q&A and Sir, next time please title your Thread, I have done it for you...Thanks.
Hello
I am seriously considering getting the S4 for delivery on launch.
When i got my HTC One X, it was about a week after launch. The phone had 2 screen bugs (yellow spots and flickering). Even my replacement phone had this problem. Are Samsung known for early batches of new handsets to have these errors?
This is the only thing stopping me from early terminating my contract and going to Three (UK)

I got my SII on the day it was released nearly 2 yrs ago and it worked fine then and it still does to this day. However every phone released uses different hardware so past releases aren't good to go on.
I would get one and if it is genuinely faulty you can get it replaced. If you are worried then hold off and see if any concerns come up on the forums before buying. Also when getting a replacement phone, many people take it back to the same place they bought it and probably get given another phone from the same batch. If possible try a different store, you never know it might be a different batch.

Thanks for your reply, i am unsure as to whether it was just HTC being rubbish, their support team were very secretive about the problem. As it was only a small amount of handsets they didnt seem bothered about fixing it.
HTC being rubbish is definitely a factor . I've bought three Samsung's at release and never had a single issue with handset .

I'd wait a few months and see how many issues people are having.
Maybe wait until it drops down $50 since thats the point where a good number of units have already been in peoples hands.
I never liked being the first person to have something from a cost and reliability perspective.
Some of the higher end car audio gear is known for having issues in the first few production runs and i've learned from that it's wise to be cautious with brand new electronics.
Well its all about luck, there isnt any much difference between ist and 2nd batch. When s3 came, some said the blue one has back cover problem but it wasnt like this.
sent from: The New S-Pen
I got the s3 on launch and it was perfect. I maaaay or may not have bricked it/it died on me but they straight replaced it on warranty no questions asked even with cm10 installed.

Bought two S3s the week they were released and both have been perfect ever since.
But past events don't mean for sure the GS4 will be without problems. Also, comparing any launch with the HTC One X...that was probably the worst phone launch in terms of hardware problems that I've ever seen, so ANYTHING is going to be better than that

He is highlighting the irony of someone slating HTC however they are posting on Xda from a HTC One..... You know, I might use a thanks as it made me laugh.

I know what he was referring to as this is my forth and last HTC one so the irony isn't lost on me . I instructed somebody in HTC one forum a couple of weeks ago on how to change his set up and it was quite a detailed message , did I get a thanks ? Nope . Yet there are a lot of thanks going around these days for not a lot .
To be honest I'm not even sure why I'm moaning , I must be just that bored I guess .

Mostly everyone has a credit card now a days. just make sure you use a premium credit card that will double your manufacturer's warranty. As simple as that.
But if you don't have a premium credit card (not hard to get) then you're out of luck I guess.
Given the issues HTC is having with the One, its no surprise their QC is not holding up. Apple has issues with initial launches and their phones. So far I have not had any issues with the Samsung first batches of phones, they are building 10 million a month of these puppies for global launch unlike Apple who delays launches into different markets.

there is nothing funny about that. I prefer getting negative opinions from someone who actually own an HTC than a clueless Samsung fanboy.

No it doesn't. Why would you think that?
---------- Post added at 08:00 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:57 PM ----------
I bought my SGS2 a month after release and it never had any issues. But my SGS3 bought 1 month after release also had a faulty display (black spots), SDS and some small errors in the hyperglaze on the backcover. Many SGS3 early buyers also had problem with the cracking "metal" bezel.
I think Samsungs QA is taking a hit because of the popularity of the Galaxy phones. I normally never had any issues with their phones unlike HTC which I always had issues with.
I took the plunge and have pre ordered the S4 on Three

Because my visa cash rewards bank of america card doubles the warranty on anything I by? Look into it next time. Don't just blindly respond to something you don't know. A lot of credit cards come with perks and benefits. Roadside assistance, buyers protection, double a warranty to up to a year, etc.
Samsung's phones may generationally look the same which doesn't make everyone happy but there's an advantage. Building the SGS4 isn't much different than building the SGS3 and the N2 that preceded it. There was the occasional bezel not aligned or the home buttons being different heights on those phones but nothing really major. Variances in color temperature of the display is an "AMOLED thing" so I'd expect that to continue to some degree. But when you consider how many devices Samsung sells versus the number of QC complaints it’s pretty amazing they come out of the shoot as well built as they do.
Here's how Samsung started down the QC road and their general outlook...
In 1995, Chairman Lee was dismayed to learn that cell phones he gave as New Year’s gifts were found to be inoperable. He directed underlings to assemble a pile of 150,000 devices in a field outside the Gumi factory. More than 2,000 staff members gathered around the pile. Then it was set on fire. When the flames died down, bulldozers razed whatever was remaining. “If you continue to make poor-quality products like these,” Lee Keon Hyok recalls the chairman saying, “I’ll come back and do the same thing.”
The lesson stuck. In May 2012, three weeks before the new Galaxy S III was to be shipped, a Samsung customer told the company that the back covers for the smartphone looked cheaper than the demo models shown to clients earlier. “He was right,” says DJ Lee, the marketing chief of Samsung Mobile. “The grain wasn’t as fine on the later models.” There were 100,000 covers in the warehouse with the inferior design, as well as shipments of the assembled devices waiting at airports. This time, there would be no bonfire—all 100,000 covers, as well as those on the units at the airports, were scrapped and replaced.
Great story on the "Samsung way"...

Well my G2x is finally [email protected]#$ing the bed. im getting a Nexus 4 on Thursday (if they have it in stock, *Fingers Crossed), and putting a bullet in the G2x to put it out of its misery. I'm sure with the current charging issue i cant sell it anyway. and i have tried 3 different batteries, all original. I have tried flashing a few different roms, no change. It seems to discharge as it is on the wall charger even though it says it is charging, I have tried the OEM charger, my Bluetooth charger and my Nexus 7 charger (OEM - 500mA, Bluetooth - 700mA, Nexus - 2.0A). It happens even when underclocked. I think it has just over heated too many times and just needs to die.
For those that want to know I am making a video of the phone being shot, I dont have a high speed camera so dont expect a lot.
What really kills me is i have never dropped this phone or damaged it physically in any way, accept the small plastic piece between the charging port and the slot to open the back (pulled on the wrong part once). I used to love this phone until I started getting the SOD and it has been an uphill battle from there.
So anyway I would like to thank ALL of the devs that have ever worked on this phone. Your perseverance has been amazing, and I hope this phone gets the update is sorely needs. With my luck it will be the day I get the new phone (some thing happened with my Droid LOL).
It's rumored Google will be releasing an updated nexus for mid May (google IO is in a week). I thknk it'll be LTE and have more storage. Probably worth it to wait for it.

Thanks for the info but my area doesn't even support proper 4g, T-Mobile has there phones say 4g but its just HSPA (given there version of 4g is HSPA+). In any case I'll have a week to return the phone anyway. The whole reason I even bought this phone was for the specs, I refuse to do that again. I'm going with what I know is good and what people have had good experience with. Some nexus devices have issues too ( look at the galaxy nexus on Verizon)

Just letting you know since I got my nexus 7 on launch, then they updated it with more storage that's also faster in a couple months. Not a big deal, but it's right around the corner.
My biggest problem with the nexus 4 is that apparently the audio out isn't very loud, meaning I'd have to grab an ipod on top of it.
I'm thinking I'll either grab a nexus 4 and an ipod or just see how long I can last on this phone and grab the next nexus (if I don't throw this out a window).

I waited for my 32gb nexus 7 only because I knew it was coming ( I worked at staples) and that I could use all that storage . I don't care about the speaker and I use a zune because I have over 42Gb of music. BUT all of that is on Play Music so I use that but it kills the battery. But the point of the matter is my phone is breaking and I would like to get it, its only $50 at T-Mobile with the added $17 to my bill for the 16Gb.

OP enjoy your new Device....
So I ordered a Nexus 5 32GB, Hell yeah!
Unfortunately I'm not from the US so if there is some sort of hardware problem, I can't replace it.
Do you think the 1st batch will come with hardware problems like the Nexus 4 did?
P.S If any mods think this thread is pointless, you are welcome to delete it.

Never possible to know the answer to this type of question. I got a Nexus 7 early and it was ridden with problems, but my N4 was/is flawless to this day. Manufacturer difference? Luck? No way to tell. I'm sure they put a lot of effort into this device, since it features LTE and is probably projected to sell more.
I had a "first batch" Nexus 4 and had no problems with it whatsoever. Don't recall there being any major problems..
There was hardware issues with the n4? I don't remember seeing any.. The nexus 7 on the other hand.... Damn asus
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
There are service bulletins leaked on the Russian famous 4PDA mobile forums for the Nexus 4. If you check them, you will find, that there was one major HW fault related to not showing charging status, when phone put on wireless cradle in a shut-off state. Besides, several HW corrections, including button design, buzz/hiss problem, back cover and other minor issues were addressed by LG at least up to June month. So, there is constantly bug discovery and correction process going on by LG, thus, for sure, the 1st batch of Nexus 5 will have hidden problems, which may or may not affect the overall usability and operation directly, but, for sure, they better be fixed then left to be lived with. Me, personally, never buy 1st batch products nowadays, as they are all released in a rush with just light and incomplete testing done. If I decide to upgrade, I will do it no sooner than April/May next year, as it generally takes about 3-4 months for the manufacturer to acknowledge the issues and justify the production process.
Hope, this helps!

The only ones that come to mind are the lack of raisers on the back that they included in the newer revisions of n4 and that some users vibration deteriorated over time. I have the vibration problem but kind of just lived with it rather than returning since it happened a few months down the line.

You ask a question that is unanswerable by anyone here. Does it really matter what people think? Only using the device will give us the answer for this.
Well so basically I have been considering gifting my mint S3 to my sister since she needs a phone and I have been thinking about getting the Nexus 5 for a while, almost pulled the trigger today but did a little research and was shocked by so many units coming out with defects which concerns me since I am studying abroad in the Dominican Republic and its very complicated to go trough a RMA process. I am considering the 32gb black model from the USA play store, from what I have heard Google/LG have done a few improvements to serial number 312k. I would like to know if under these circumstances is it a good time to buy a Nexus 5? What are the chances of getting a 312k serial unit?
I just cannot understand how can so many units come defective, I have yet to see an iPhone with these kind of issues but it is not just an LG issue, many manufacturers are suffering from this.

I got to say I am starting to get quite skeptical about the defends vs the prima donnas in this forum. I ordered my first one after reading after all the threads and it was flawless. Then I ordered a second one and it also came flawless. What are the chances I am just that lucky?
