1st batch hardware problems like N4? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I ordered a Nexus 5 32GB, Hell yeah!
Unfortunately I'm not from the US so if there is some sort of hardware problem, I can't replace it.
Do you think the 1st batch will come with hardware problems like the Nexus 4 did?
P.S If any mods think this thread is pointless, you are welcome to delete it.

Never possible to know the answer to this type of question. I got a Nexus 7 early and it was ridden with problems, but my N4 was/is flawless to this day. Manufacturer difference? Luck? No way to tell. I'm sure they put a lot of effort into this device, since it features LTE and is probably projected to sell more.

I had a "first batch" Nexus 4 and had no problems with it whatsoever. Don't recall there being any major problems..

There was hardware issues with the n4? I don't remember seeing any.. The nexus 7 on the other hand.... Damn asus

There are service bulletins leaked on the Russian famous 4PDA mobile forums for the Nexus 4. If you check them, you will find, that there was one major HW fault related to not showing charging status, when phone put on wireless cradle in a shut-off state. Besides, several HW corrections, including button design, buzz/hiss problem, back cover and other minor issues were addressed by LG at least up to June month. So, there is constantly bug discovery and correction process going on by LG, thus, for sure, the 1st batch of Nexus 5 will have hidden problems, which may or may not affect the overall usability and operation directly, but, for sure, they better be fixed then left to be lived with. Me, personally, never buy 1st batch products nowadays, as they are all released in a rush with just light and incomplete testing done. If I decide to upgrade, I will do it no sooner than April/May next year, as it generally takes about 3-4 months for the manufacturer to acknowledge the issues and justify the production process.
Hope, this helps!

The only ones that come to mind are the lack of raisers on the back that they included in the newer revisions of n4 and that some users vibration deteriorated over time. I have the vibration problem but kind of just lived with it rather than returning since it happened a few months down the line.

You ask a question that is unanswerable by anyone here. Does it really matter what people think? Only using the device will give us the answer for this.

[Q] Doubting my purchase. who else?

so i ended up buying at my local best buy. i was surprised they had both the tablet and dock in stock. also the thirve. this was almost a week ago. but anyhow. i have not had any issues so far, but im seeing people with issues... should i just return it that i still have time. or should i just keep it and get a extended warranty?
If you arent having any issues with it and doubting your purchase that means you were doubtful before buying it... So why did you buy it?

Goodness, just get an ipad 2 and get it over with.
i was actually. but i wanted it. my like for this tablet started with my fail attempt with the atrix.
and no i find the iPad stupid.
ehh, i just don't want it to mess up. how is service with asus?
You bought the thing based on what others told you. Now you want to return it based what yet another mob told you. Have you tried making your own decisions?

Damn, this place is pretty hostile...
OP, if you're not having any issues with your transformer, I see no reason why you would want to return it based on others' defective units.

yeah the only problems i see that most people are having is light bleed and creaking within the case. if you don't have any of these then i suggest you keep it. No matter what device you go to next there will always be some issue as I have yet to come across a perfect phone/tablet.
No doubts
Definetaly no doubts. Beautiful piece of equipment, the Transformer.
Though it is a fact that within a year I'd like to have another tablet, since the ones we are not seeing are first-stage devices, not much more than prototypes. Devices two years from now will have 5 times the memory capacity, 2-3 times the power, better and more responsive screens, much more mature apps etc. And can probably do things we can only guess now.
But I plan to last 2 years before the next device. Well, maybe.
I was just joking, lol

the ONLY place i want to hear creaking is sitting out front at Cracker Barrel in one of those large rocking chairs.
i just dont want to encounter problems. and there seems to be quiet a bunch. my tablet doesnt have any. at the moment. but i dont want it to mess up later on. hardware wise. but i like it. i really do. just known issues put me at that place where i think if i should return it or hope for the best. and for the second time i dont like ipads... over sized ipod. i already have a iPod.
and im not a trend whore... if i was i would of gone with a recently released galaxy tab...
All devices have problems. The ipad2 has screen bleed. Get over it. I traded my ipad 2 for a transformer. While it worked well, the lack of functionally killed it. It is overly simplified so much that if becomes bothersome. iTunes also kills it. A tablet pc shouldn't have to rely on another PC foo function.
Same with the Samsung galaxy 10.1.... lack of ports. The thrive looks huge. Unless that tablet packs something magical, eh. Thing looks like if came straight from 1999.

Uh no? He specifically stated that this doubt occurred when he read all of the horror stories about it.
Service at Asus is terrible. Long wait times (some have stated up to or more than a month "Waiting for Parts"), some people claim they blamed damages that were caused either by the service center or the post office on them. If they find a single ding on the bezel they'll send it back to you as out of warranty. One lady had hers come back with a gash on the back.
The list goes on. You don't want to deal with them. You also have to pay money to send it back to them.
If you're doubting your purchase now, I would return it.
What the OP is experiencing is the Buyers Remorse, we all went through that stage in a way or another.
Just play with it for a fewdays, if didn't get over it just return it. I myself ordered a transformer from the new egg, almost a month ago, however it turned out that they don't accept international credit card, so my money is stuck, I am supposed to cash it in a week time or so, meanwhile I had the time to investigate couple of new tablets that came to the market, the Galaxy and the Thrive, but looks like I will stick to the Transformer and reorder it back.

[Q] How has the One S held up? Would you recommend one used?

hey y'all,
(I had this in general, but I was sent here into Q&A, so here I am!).
I have been considering a new phone to replace my (very) old Captivate. The Cappy has been a great phone, but the hardware is finally starting to wear out, and I am finally starting to feel the lack of power. The One S is now dropping to around $230 used off-contract, so I am thinking that could be a fun purchase.
My worry is only one : buying into a device that is having reliability issues. Has the One S held up? Anything I should look out for in a used device?
Would you recommend it for $230 used? I have other phones I am considering - $230 seems like a sweet spot for Galaxy S II or galaxy Nexus ... I know I could a dd a little and get a Nexus 4, but that "little (about $150) is a little too much for me.
Thanks
I'm not sure about everyone else but I;ve dropped my phone plenty of times without any problems. I rooted a couple of months ago and just added the LiquidSmooth ROM, which is lightning fast. Basically if you root your phone and install a Custom ROM you definitely won't be far behind a couple of the newer phones coming out, and I even venture to say the One S has a better price/performance ratio than most phones

yeah that is my attraction to it.
Sadly I have yet to hear of an Android phone without its quirks (for the Captivate: sudden sleep-death. GPS and power button problems are all hardware problems we just learned how to mitigate through software workarounds) ... so I am trying to find out what are the annoyances with the One S ....
Also .. the T-Mo version is a little different software-wise than the other versions, right? There seems a lot of discussion about Wifi problems ... any insights? please?
Thanks
Are you in the US? If so we don't have the Jb update yet but its coming. Overall I have no real complaints. 230 seems steep for a used device to me. How close to an upgrade are you?
Thanks for not getting bent out of shape at my comment in general. Just trying to keep it clean:beer:

Yes, I am in US. So no official JB, but it seems the development support for the phone is running apace, right?
I am shopping for a full price phone - it is worth the $45 monthly bill and unlocked devices. Thus no upgrade lures. Phone prices are not low - for sure. It makes the Nexus 4 attractive, but that phone is still $350 - $400 with taxes and shipping, so that is a little steep for me.

Worry about early batch

Hello
I am seriously considering getting the S4 for delivery on launch.
When i got my HTC One X, it was about a week after launch. The phone had 2 screen bugs (yellow spots and flickering). Even my replacement phone had this problem. Are Samsung known for early batches of new handsets to have these errors?
This is the only thing stopping me from early terminating my contract and going to Three (UK)

I got my SII on the day it was released nearly 2 yrs ago and it worked fine then and it still does to this day. However every phone released uses different hardware so past releases aren't good to go on.
I would get one and if it is genuinely faulty you can get it replaced. If you are worried then hold off and see if any concerns come up on the forums before buying. Also when getting a replacement phone, many people take it back to the same place they bought it and probably get given another phone from the same batch. If possible try a different store, you never know it might be a different batch.

Thanks for your reply, i am unsure as to whether it was just HTC being rubbish, their support team were very secretive about the problem. As it was only a small amount of handsets they didnt seem bothered about fixing it.
HTC being rubbish is definitely a factor . I've bought three Samsung's at release and never had a single issue with handset .

I'd wait a few months and see how many issues people are having.
Maybe wait until it drops down $50 since thats the point where a good number of units have already been in peoples hands.
I never liked being the first person to have something from a cost and reliability perspective.
Some of the higher end car audio gear is known for having issues in the first few production runs and i've learned from that it's wise to be cautious with brand new electronics.
Well its all about luck, there isnt any much difference between ist and 2nd batch. When s3 came, some said the blue one has back cover problem but it wasnt like this.
sent from: The New S-Pen
I got the s3 on launch and it was perfect. I maaaay or may not have bricked it/it died on me but they straight replaced it on warranty no questions asked even with cm10 installed.

Bought two S3s the week they were released and both have been perfect ever since.
But past events don't mean for sure the GS4 will be without problems. Also, comparing any launch with the HTC One X...that was probably the worst phone launch in terms of hardware problems that I've ever seen, so ANYTHING is going to be better than that

Mostly everyone has a credit card now a days. just make sure you use a premium credit card that will double your manufacturer's warranty. As simple as that.
But if you don't have a premium credit card (not hard to get) then you're out of luck I guess.
Given the issues HTC is having with the One, its no surprise their QC is not holding up. Apple has issues with initial launches and their phones. So far I have not had any issues with the Samsung first batches of phones, they are building 10 million a month of these puppies for global launch unlike Apple who delays launches into different markets.

I bought my SGS2 a month after release and it never had any issues. But my SGS3 bought 1 month after release also had a faulty display (black spots), SDS and some small errors in the hyperglaze on the backcover. Many SGS3 early buyers also had problem with the cracking "metal" bezel.
I think Samsungs QA is taking a hit because of the popularity of the Galaxy phones. I normally never had any issues with their phones unlike HTC which I always had issues with.

Because my visa cash rewards bank of america card doubles the warranty on anything I by? Look into it next time. Don't just blindly respond to something you don't know. A lot of credit cards come with perks and benefits. Roadside assistance, buyers protection, double a warranty to up to a year, etc.
Samsung's phones may generationally look the same which doesn't make everyone happy but there's an advantage. Building the SGS4 isn't much different than building the SGS3 and the N2 that preceded it. There was the occasional bezel not aligned or the home buttons being different heights on those phones but nothing really major. Variances in color temperature of the display is an "AMOLED thing" so I'd expect that to continue to some degree. But when you consider how many devices Samsung sells versus the number of QC complaints it’s pretty amazing they come out of the shoot as well built as they do.
Here's how Samsung started down the QC road and their general outlook...
In 1995, Chairman Lee was dismayed to learn that cell phones he gave as New Year’s gifts were found to be inoperable. He directed underlings to assemble a pile of 150,000 devices in a field outside the Gumi factory. More than 2,000 staff members gathered around the pile. Then it was set on fire. When the flames died down, bulldozers razed whatever was remaining. “If you continue to make poor-quality products like these,” Lee Keon Hyok recalls the chairman saying, “I’ll come back and do the same thing.”
The lesson stuck. In May 2012, three weeks before the new Galaxy S III was to be shipped, a Samsung customer told the company that the back covers for the smartphone looked cheaper than the demo models shown to clients earlier. “He was right,” says DJ Lee, the marketing chief of Samsung Mobile. “The grain wasn’t as fine on the later models.” There were 100,000 covers in the warehouse with the inferior design, as well as shipments of the assembled devices waiting at airports. This time, there would be no bonfire—all 100,000 covers, as well as those on the units at the airports, were scrapped and replaced.
Great story on the "Samsung way"...

[Q] Is it a good time to buy a Nexus 5 (Defects)?

Well so basically I have been considering gifting my mint S3 to my sister since she needs a phone and I have been thinking about getting the Nexus 5 for a while, almost pulled the trigger today but did a little research and was shocked by so many units coming out with defects which concerns me since I am studying abroad in the Dominican Republic and its very complicated to go trough a RMA process. I am considering the 32gb black model from the USA play store, from what I have heard Google/LG have done a few improvements to serial number 312k. I would like to know if under these circumstances is it a good time to buy a Nexus 5? What are the chances of getting a 312k serial unit?
I just cannot understand how can so many units come defective, I have yet to see an iPhone with these kind of issues but it is not just an LG issue, many manufacturers are suffering from this.

Well i have one too, and ive never had any problems with it. Samsung and iphones cpu and gpu are known to become laggy after 6 months. The qualcom/adreno mix is known to be able to stay in shape for a longer period of time. I understand that there are alot of people out there that had problemes with the speaker during calls or the washed out screens but they are only software problems.

it all depends on what your needs or use is.
there is no 1 best phone. one may be better in performance, one may be better in camera etc etc
while none are trash (except the I device), there are personal reasons i would choose one over the other. thats the problem with trying to tell someone what device would be best for them.
