Dear all, my Captivate is slowly limping, prompting me to upgrade. There are multiple reasons the Cappy is unhappy. She has been through a lot of ROM's and I think she is tired of all of it. But my battery and Wifi seem to be simply tired in the Hardware department.
I am considering the original Nexus S because of the smaller size, the price of Free (With 2 year ATT plan I already have) and for the unlocked naked Android
Is it still worth buying one of these 1.5 years after the fact? How is the GPS (The Galazx S has GAP lock problems)
Thoughts?
Thanks .
If you don't look for the best of the best, the Nexus S is still an excellent phone. The GPS works fine. I did a 120Km trip the other day, and was all the time with it on and never dropped or gave me misleading readings.
I can still run all the games, new or old, without any hick, and it's still very fast with ICS.
In the end, it's up to you
I would say pick a used 1 off craigslist or ebay for $130.
smartest way to go than to get locked in a contract with 2 year old tech.

I just want something that works .... get NS 4.0.4 get a launcher I like and be done. That's all.

I got my Nexus S about 2 months ago and I gotta say it is a real stable device.
My previous device was The Samsung Vibrant {Still in my pocket} and this phone as on par with my Vibe. After of course flashing 4.0.4 on it.
My Nexus S saw 1 OTA update. When I got it at bestbuy (Free w 2 year contract) it came with Gingerbread 2.3. After an hour or so It got an OTA of 2.3.6. It was a refreshing change to have Fully functional Gingerbread running. After a month I found a thread here on XDA that you can flash OTA's just by using the stock Recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445570
My wifes phone got the OTA to 4.0.4 but after a month mine still did not get it so I used the above thread and put it on myself.
No rooting, No un-locking of boot loader, Plain stock.
Now I like this Nexus S even more with 4.0.4 running on it.
The GPS is (for me) accurate to 12 feet All day. My only issue was that on a 5 hour trip the Battery was dead in 3 hours being on a car charger. Further tests shown that the screen brightness being 45% or brighter would drain the battery as 45% or lower the Battery would Charge up. (yrmv)
The thing I noticed that I like is the Flash on the Camera. Best I have ever seen on A phone. Bright, Bright, Bright, for a good distance.
I use Apex launcher as I like it over nova.
I have a 2 tone black TPU cover from eforcity that is amazing.
My wife dropped her NS on a Cement side walk and in her words " It went dancing across the sidewalk" with no problems or damage to it.
Its been a rock solid device for me and I have no complaints about it.
just my Short Opinion on this.
Good luck on your decision.

Dunno bout getting stuck in a 2 year contract for it though.

So im in the talks of trading my SGS3 for an Intuition. I'm curious to see how that phone would be on a daily basis. But im afraid I'll regret the decision. I know this forum will be based. But im reaching out to my fellow XDA addicts for their input.
Let me know what you think about it.

I've really been looking at doing the same. It's hard to get decent opinions because most people say it's bad but have never even seen one irl. One of the big problems I have is it will probably never see a custom rom besides root. It's also a rather old phone but it can still play pretty much any game and handle anything. I played with one at verizon and it had some lag but I'm not sure if it's the launcher or not. Kinda bugs me also because I know I'll lose the stylus and it's just a normal stylus you can buy off amazon for like $2 (nothing like a s pen). I will probably buy one to try it, I can see myself possibly loving it or totally hating it, I doubt there a a middle ground.

Well I've never broken a phone and I've always done that since my first smartphone. The Palm Treo 755p. Lol. If you're into getting a bigger phone, I would hold for the Galaxy Note II. It's coming to Verizon, and is likely to see custom roms. I highly doubt the Intuition will see much. The phone seems solid, but LG has lately had problems with keeping up on Android updates (I'm looking at you, Spectrum). Samsung, while not perfect, shows more promise in rolling out updates.

Yea I'm really thinking about the note 2 as well but the format of the intuition makes it awesome for emails, Internet, pdfs ect. The only only place it lacks is watching videos, and it's S3 cpu which is like 2 years old already I just ask myself how often do I watch videos on my phone, not a ton how often do I email look up things on the Web? Probably 200+ times a day.
I probably still won't get it but I'd love to see them make one (and release it in the us) with better specs and fore thought across the board and I'd be on it

THANK YOU! At least one person said it.... If you cannot do anything to a phone besides rooting it then it won't be in my hands.... I have to have full control so I can optimize every aspect of my phone cause we all know the manufacturers won't and Verizon DEFINITELY won't! The LG is a pretty giant leap back so I would wait for the Note 2 or the possibility of another Nexus device but def do not go backwards... (Just my opinion)
If you don't really care about ever using a custom ROM then go ahead. Otherwise I believe the SGS3 has it beat in every category.
I wouldn't. The single biggest problem with the phone is the aspect ratio. Every single review points out how awkward the phone is with a 4:3 ratio.
I would NOT do it.
If you want a phablet, wait for the Note 2. I highly doubt many devs will work on the intuition. You'd get better development off the droid x2.

Well, looks like people will have to reconsider seeing as the next Nexus is made by LG.
Samsung Galaxy S3
Intuition has terrible battery life and an even worse camera. I do like the design but there's absolutely no way I'd trade my S3 for one. I'm also waiting on a phablet worthy of ditching my S3. Going to be the Note II probably. Not to mention Samsung has a ton of great tablet/s-pen features that can't be found elsewhere. One last thing is the stylus has no built in holder. You have to carry it separately. Deal breaker right there for me.

I bought this phone a few weeks ago and let me start by saying that I LOVE it. The features, the software, the hardware, EVERYTHING. But I bought it for $400 off the marketplace and it was fine at first, but then it had signal drops (for hours at a time). I didn't notice until it was far too late to ask for a refund. I sent it to Samsung, and they "fixed" it, but I got it back and it still has the issue. I've compared it to my mom's droid charge and hers has far better signal. Verizon won't replace it, but my brother is willing to give up his upgrade. He has a feature phone and no desire to upgrade. Right now I'm looking at another S III, Droid DNA, MAXX HD, or Note 2. Which should I go for?
Have you swapped around radios? Tried different ROMs?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
I am bone stock. Before I sent it in for repair I rooted, and tried every radio.
From the phone choices you picked out I would get the Note 2. If that's too big you can try another S3.
If you have a better suggestion, feel free to let me know. I hate the branded home button on the note 2 though.

I have a similar problem when making or recieving calls. For me I don't talk a lot so it is nota big deal. However you really just need to decide how inconvienient the signal issue is for you.
I would consider it a huge pain in the ass. I want my phone to work, and I'm definitely getting a new phone. I just need to decide which one.
I have also experienced call drops and poor reception in low signal areas. I'd suggest trying out a Motorola, the DNA or the Maxx.
DNA all the way. People will disagree with me because it has no SD slot and non removable battery...but if you don't need those options then I'd go with the DNA...I'm getting the DNA. HTC makes good quality phones in my opinion. Nice soft touch back, not plasticy feeling.

I have thought some more on it and I have 13 GB music, 2 GB games, plus other misc stuff, so I would say the DNA is out. The MAXX HD is an option, but the UI is heinous and there is actually 1 ROM for it. The Note II's home button should die a painful death. Any stickers for it take 3 weeks all from Hong Kong. :/ The S III is looking like my best option. Any further advice is appreciated.

My advice? Don't step into a forum that everyone in it owns a certain product and say said product is a piece of trash.
Usually doesn't go over well.
Second, if your going to complain about getting a note 2 and having to wait 3 weeks just to cover the home button so you don't see a branded logo, you've got bigger issues than a phone your not happy with.

have you tried a new sim card?
Yes I did, two in fact.
word, hadnt seen it mentioned yet.
whatever path you choose i hope youre happy with the decision.
if you go another route, does VZW still offer the test drive 14 day return period? Could alawys come back to the GS3 if youre not satisfied with your new device. or sell gs3, Or you could keep the galaxy as an MP3 player.
Once I get the new phone, I'm gonna give the old one another shot at getting repaired. Then I'll test it and sell it.
Why burn an upgrade to get the same phone you already have. Low signal reception it's a know issue for the s3, especially in comparison with Motorola products.

Still works great for me. Until a few days ago I was still running a cm nightly from Oct without any issues. The only reason I jumped to cm10.1(which runs beautifully) is because I just picked up a N7 and have got that flashing bug again . Been able to upgrade since august......have no reason to......figure I'll ride out the contracts on my other two lines and then either upgrade if sprint finally has LTE here in metro D or jump ship to TMo or ATT. Gives me and my ns4g 8 more wonderful months together
Craft. Beer.
1. Cost of a better replacement
2. Still up-to-date and runs stable
3. Small enough to fit in my shirt pocket comfortably
4. A friend painted the back cover bright red in an auto bodyshop (see pic). Looks cool with the Body Glove case on

Same for me! But when I saw for the first time the Nexus S with its special curved screen, for me there was no doubt about which device to buy! If the nexux 4 was curved like the Nexus S would have started walking to go to Germany to buy even paying 200 € more. Excellent aesthetics, supported (although I think the backers are falling), and Google!

I have had a Nexus 4 since the end of August.
I've been given the opportunity to upgrade to a new Nexus 5. Should I go for it, or should I wait instead and get the Nexus 6 (or whatever it will be called) in October when its released?
Anyone who did make the jump from the N4, your opinions will be greatly appreciated. I can't see any groundbreaking improvements...?
So far I'm leaning on sticking with the N4 for now, its not even a year old yet and does pretty much all I want to do on it. I'm a casual user, no root, stock KitKat etc.
Cheers.

In all honesty I don't think it is worth it, yeah; 1080p, better camera, processor, and speaker is moved but really..... eh as far as I am concerned.. If I remember correctly you can get LTE on the Nexus 4 (I never did though). I upgraded just because I wanted the latest nexus device.
I also got my N4 in August. I only had it until the week the N5 came out. It was just too tempting! I don't think the N5 is a massive upgrade but my N4 used to shut itself down overnight sometimes. The N5 has been totally reliable and feels much more robust. Its the first Android phone that I've kept close to stock. Franco kernel is well worth looking at.

lte works great on the nexus 4. sure, it officially doesnt have it. but its easy enough to enable.
anyways, in speed and performance, the nexus 5 blows away the nexus 4.
Upgraded from the N4 to N5 since November and never looked back!
If you can wait for the Motorola-Lenovo Nexus then wait for it or if you can't buy it now then sell it later then use that $ pickup the new motoleno nexus
I also came from the n4 and mainly upgraded to the n5 because of the bigger screen, camera, and sd800. The camera itself was enough for me to buy it since the n4 had this horrible over exposure preview problem when taking pictures. Which made it extremely difficult to tell if it was a good picture or not until I went into the gallery to check it.
Either way, I have no regrets
No regrets, had the N4 for about 4 months before moving to the N5. N4 was my first foray back into Android phone since the LG Eve (which Rogers/LG abandoned pretty much, had to beg to get 1.6 when everyone else was getting 2.2). N5 to me feels much more refined than the N4, in terms of just the feel of the phone itself (thinner, sleeker, barely taller but the screen difference was noticeable). That said, it's much more like an evolutionary vs revolutionary device when compared with the N4.
I would say no. I would personally only upgrade ever 2 cycle. Went from an Samsung Galaxy S2X to a nexus 5 and it wasn't that big of a jump, but the price was right.
Snapdragon 800 ia a beast
had N4 from march, changed to another one in August..and in November moved to N5. wouldnt go back in a lifetime!
go for n5
The Nexus 4 isn't that bad although the only thing I miss/don't miss is the glass back. It made the phone stand out but I was so scared of damaging it.
What I really do love about the Nexus 5 is that we now have the option for a 32gb (which I now have unopposed to a 16gb Nexus 4). The screen is also a lot better, camera is a million times better and the speaker has definitely improved over the Nexus 4. I remember being embarrassed when showing a friend or a family member a YouTube video and them asking me to turn my volume up and I'm like "its all the way up".

So i had the Nexus 4, changed to Galaxy S4 and i am now on my Nexus 5.
Speed is a reason! You don't see that in speedtests but Nexus 4 and S4 had some laggy feeling that the Nexus 5 doesn't have. I played last week with the nexus 4 of a friend last week an i felt like i went back to stoneage... But afterall its everything a matter of perception.
The second reason to change is the camera! I hated the really bad camera of the nexus 4, i liked the camera of the Galaxy S4 and i love the camera of the Nexus 5. Yes the galaxy s4 has a better camera on high light conditions, but i make 90% of my pictures in parties/night under low light conditions and there the camera of the Nexus 5 is brilliant!
The third reason is Nexus wireless charger with it's magnets and the vertical charging! Really nice although a bit expensive gimmick.Really good to use in your car.
After all everything goes down to the money. I was able to make the change without paying anything, but i would definitely make the change even if i had to pay!
