Screen Lifting? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my nexus 5 the other day and am noticing what I think is screen lift. When I push with a bit more pressure than normal on the edges, near the top I can hear a popping noise and feel the screen moving just a bit. Has anyone else felt/seen this? How awful is LG's replacement process? Should I just deal with it? I should be getting a case tomorrow so I might see if that gets rid of it for now.

I'd RMA it if I were you dude. It isn't that bad of a process. They send you the phone first and once you get it you send back the old one. You never know what other problems you might encounter with your device in the future.

You won't be dealing with LG at all since you've had the phone less than a month, you'll be dealing with a Google representative. Be prepared to have them put a hold on your credit card for the amount of a replacement phone, until you mail your phone back to LG warranty. The Google rep will email you a shipping label to print out, and they cover the shipping costs.
Here are the numbers for the Google Play hardware support team.

Ahh, I didn't know they sent a replacement first, that makes this seem much less painful. What does RMA stand for though? Sorry, I don't come to these forums often.

Does anyone think they'd give me issues? You can't see the lifting (because of the lip that goes above the edge of the glass, but it is audible and you can feel it when you push just a bit hard.

I doubt it. I don't think they really check too much into the defects.

Slider Hinge a little lose

Hello everyone,
my Photon Q fell two days ago and since nothing really happened except that the slider mechanism feels more lose than before, I wanted to ask you guys if 1) with your phone it is the same or 2) do you have an idea how to make it "tight" again?
I opened the phone but couldn't really find out what causes this gap on the left side (when the phone is closed and you are looking at the front). Even it's cosmetic (for some ) it bugs me a lot
Thanks
I've got the same issue, but I thought it could be an issue caused by a fall of the Photon Q.

Mine has been like this since day one. Thought it was just crappy manufacturing. MUCH more loose compared to my old Epic4g

You probably should have exchanged it then. It's likely yours was dropped during shipping or by someone in the Sprint store.

Yes, I think so too. Before the drop it fit nicely...Hmm...but noone knows what to do to get it like that again?

I'm not experienced in hardware repair or mods, but if you can separate the two parts of the phone it looks like it has a single hinge with two rails for the slide mechanism. I don't think those would be damaged based on your pictures but there are also two pieces of metal, one on each side of the display connector. My bet would be that one of those got dented. The two pieces seem to be used as a stopping point for the slide as well as distancing/orienting the display.

Nah, Im less than thrilled with this phone, I hope it dies soon and I'll switch models. I love having a slider but there are too many disappointments with this one looks like I'll have to go with an S3 or S4.

Thanks, Solust, for your ideas. I've been thinking the same. I inspected both of them, when I opened the phone and one felt a little lose. Not as lose as the upper part of the phone feels now, though. Can you confirm that it are those things you were mentioning?

At this point I do think it is beyond me and I'm a bit surprised someone more familiar with hardware hasn't stepped in yet. Might be worth a try PMing someone involved in the SIM mod.
The two metal pieces I was thinking of are on the keyboard portion of the phone. On the back of the display portion they create a mild groove the same size as the groove for the rails. One groove is left halfway up the phone and the other between that groove and the top of the phone. When the phone is together the display cable fits perfectly between them.
I'm sorry, all I can really do is speculate. I really don't know enough about this sort of thing. I may be mistaken as to what these parts are.

I think it is pretty impossible to fix a dent in the hinge, right? But would that http://www.ebay.com/itm/MOTOROLA-PH...e_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item20d0b14dc6 fix my problems?
^ I'm pretty sure it wouldn't. My Q is suffering from the very same problem, though I got over it quite a while ago since it's kind of a 'minor' issue I actually have the same exact part sitting on my desk right now, my listing on eBay to sell it just ended haha. I could test it out for you, if you really would like to know.

Small white spot on screen?

Hey everyone, today I noticed a small white spot on my screen as I was using Google now. It doesn't just appear on light backgrounds, its always there, but more noticeable on light wallpapers.
I need to know if I would be covered by warranty and if they would replace it with this issue, or if there is a fix, that would be great. A picture is attached.
Thanks to anyone that can help and if you have questions just ask me.

My sister's tablet did that when she accidentally shut it in the car door (didnt break GTab 2 7) but it did leave a mark similar to that.

No, a lack of a filled in warranty card shouldn't affect anything. Take it to Argos or send it to Samsung for repair. They will not charge you providing you didn't cause it. I've heard good things about Samsung's support.

I haven't taken it back yet as my parents don't think it's a big issue. I'm being persistent though, maybe by the time the new generation is out they'll realise how irritating it is to someone with OCD.

If it was mine I'd struggle too.
Not too sure if Samsung would fix it for you, it does seem minor. I would be affected too. I'm quite sure that whenever you turn the screen on, your eyes automatically goes to that spot.
Have you tried cleaning the screen? The spot could be there because it was rubbed too much. You can try zippo lighter fluid to clean it the whole screen. Avoid the non-glass areas though. Take it to Samsung if it doesn't work.
If Samsung refuses to fix it... I would try a screen protector.

You can move the "dot" around on the screen (different locations). On my watch it comes and goes. I think it may have something to do with the fitness app. It is certainly no defect on the screen.

Got the nexus. And one dead pixel.

First one. White 32gb. And I have one dead pixel.everything else is great. Its not too noticeable and I'm sure there are people out there with worse that do not know.
My question is would you send it back over one if everything else is good and you're happy? To possibly get a worse device?
And if I kept it. My one year warranty can't I send it back and rma on the 11th month if I really wanted?

Hell yea I would send a new device back over a dead pixel, you shouldn't have dead pixel.
Contact google about RMA asap, don't compromise about the level of quality of your device.
With the amount of pixels in these phones its very likely you will get at least one dead pixel. If it really bothers you that much then go ahead and RMA it. Most likely though you will get another device with 1 or more dead or stuck pixels.

This is something you could do of course. I would keep it if it werent near the middle of the screen myself but I would also factor in things such as CPU binning, as well as any other defects like the vibration motor. Don't know how common that is since I haven't visited that thread for a while but if I had a near perfect device with a high CPU binning and the pixel wasn't very noticeable I would accept it. If i had a cruddy CPU binning in i would certainly send it in hoping for a perfect screen and high binning. Its a surprise Google RMAs devices with 1 dead pixel. Most displays have a certain threshold that must be reached and its usually higher than 3.

Same here. I had one dead pixel...so of course did a RMA. I was like you and contemplated dealing with it, but then I realized I didn't get a discount for the dead pixel So the phone should be perfect.

All depends on what you're willing to live with. There are 2,073,559 other pixels that are working, so, me, I would live with it. Beats going without the Nexus 5 for an unknown period of time.

Why? If you can get a free replacement with minimal effort on your part, why not?
I have 3 that I can see that are brighter. Look like stuck BUT even though I know where they are, I just can't see them at normal brightness levels. The density is tight enough that dust looks bigger. I am not bothering with RMAs. I guess I am not that picky.

Does it bother you? If so, then yes. I think you should either way, because even if it doesn't bother you yet, it will play on your mind. You didn't pay for a broken one, even if the defect seems slight!

I don't quite get how spending $400+ and expecting something to be exactly what you paid for is classified as "picky". Maybe you were raised with a silver spoon or something, but this isn't a $10 eBay purchase.
I wasn't "bothered" at all with a simple phone call to Google for my free replacement.

[Q] Need Some Advice on Damaged Nexus 5

Hey, all.
I have the 32 GB Black Nexus 5 model, but in my clumsiness, I dropped the phone in some water. After freaking out, I turned off the phone, dried it out as best as I could and then left it in rice for a few days. My stupidity cost me much, though, as the phone doesn't seem to turn on; it appears to be completely dead. The phone was purchased from the Google Play store, so I doubt I could get the phone replaced for any sort of fee less than the price of a new phone.
My question is this: how can I proceed from here? Is there anything I can do with my dead Nexus 5? Could I sell it for parts? Is there a website -- besides eBay or Craigslist -- where you can do that sort of thing? Aside from a minor scratch in the screen -- the screen has to be off and in direct light to even see it -- the phone is in tip top shape. Thanks in advance for the advice.

That could be, but the reason I mentioned it is that my wife dropped her SIII in the toilet once (and then tried to turn it on), but I was able to save it with a teardown.
Although, in retrospect, I really wonder if all that trouble was worth the price of a new phone.

Try this or get some silica gel and put it in a plastic bag with the phone. Wouldn't hurt to remove at least the backplate though, as it is very easy to do so.

When it make this sound?
- when u put some pressure? or what?
Xperia phones don't have bendgate
The phone seems to creak a bit when a little pressure is applied to the middle of the phone. Just curious if anyone else has the same issue?
I have the same issue. Phone creaks and flexes slightly when pressure is applied just above the centre of the phone's display; easy to replicate when pinching the phone with fingers at this point.
Ok, I thought I was going crazy for a minute. I'm in the united stated and bought my phone for handtec and I don't eeally feel like shipping my phone back to the UK and waiting for another unit to be shipped. If its normal then I guess I deal with it. Hoping to hear more from some other people to see if this is normal or not.

I can't replicate this on mine - from EE
It's the tacky heat spreading spongy type stuff in between the battery and glass panel, did it on tablet z. Nothing to worry about.

So I got my replacement device today and the flexing is all but gone. I can feel/hear a small amount of give but it is almost none existent and nothing at all like it was before. My only complaint now is the slight light bleed along at the bottom of the left bezel (in portrait). My first device had the same minor issue but it's nothing to lose sleep over.
