"Remove the battery"? On a Nexus? WTF?
To the OP - force reboot into recovery and try wiping the cache or factory reset.
Was your friend running a custom ROM or rooted? If so that will be the problem - OTA updates are often a problem on modified devices.
Booting after an update usually takes long time..
Since the new 4.4 has ART runtime, it will take even longer time after the activation..
Try to be more patient....

Hi Everyone...
As lollipop is running out I though I would try to have it on my nexus 5.
First I went on System update, then check now. Nothing change, then phone is telling me "last checked on Oct. 4".
Then I read that dialing *#*#checkin#*#* would force it to check, that's what I did, after few seconds, the notification "checkin failed" appeared.
And when I tried to flash it inside, adb is not recognizing my phone even though it's listed in system information...
Any clue what's going on ?
Thank you very much for your time and answers !
the ota for the nexus 5 has only been released several hours ago. google does not send them to everyone at the same time. only a few will get updates, then more after. google promises everyone will get an update within 3 weeks. and you dont want/need adb to flash the factory img, you need fastboot to do that(via the bootloader).

You're totally right, but I have the slight feeling something is wrong when the time of last checked doesn't change and have an error with the *#*#checkin#*#*

Hi guys.
I used to get a notification which was bugging me to update to 5.0.
I blocked that ongoing notification through Gravity Box (Xposed)
I don't know what has happened, but now when I go to system updates, I see "your system is up to date".
I could have downloaded the update last month but did not because of some root issues. Now when I want to upgrade, I can't.
Any idea on how to get the OTA update? (I can flash the zip, but don't want to)
Thanks!

You'll have to wait for it to come round again.
Wait for the notification? But why? It was available a few days ago... Vanished after I installed the Closed framework.
I also installed eggster for different easter eggs. Can that be a problem?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
The notification goes after a while if you don't accept it. You go to the back of the queue. Sounds like you've made enough modifications for the ota not to work anyway
Okay, this might sound stupid but... Making a lot of modifications disables the OTA or something?

OTA requires no modified files to apply. You'll still get the notification (when its your turn again) but the install will fail
I believe he means, too many modifications that differs from the OTA zip.
Restore the factory image, or side-load it.
I don't k ow if this method still works, but:
Google Services Framework, Force Stop, Clear App Data, then go check System Update.
Service cannot be stopped. Rebooted quite a few times now.
Looks like I'll have to install the factory image directly.

Flash the 5.0 image manualy in fastboot or better yet wait a bit more for the 5.0.1 image to be posted by Google.
The funny thing is, I got a notification to update even after rooting, patching apps etc.
It is only after I installed Xposed that the OTA vanished.
Some people say that even the presence of SU app can fail the update. Is it true?

Look in the general thread OTA thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/ref-nexus-5-stock-ota-urls-t2475327, the OTA is still available there. First reflash the latest 4.4.4 Nexus 5 image and after that sideload flash the OTA in recovery. Backup your files first before flashing 4.4.4 again.
I will flash the 5.0.1 directly now. Thanks all.

There is no link between modifications and the notification. The notification would have disappeared even if you were stock unrooted. The fact it disappeared after installing xposed is pureb coincidence
Oh okay. Thanks!
My SM-N915FY reboots appx. 10 times per day. It's a stock phone, no root so no custom roms or mods. I had this phone since 5.1.1 and the phone is now at 6.0.1 patch level 1 from June 1, 2016. All upgrades have been done automatically OTA by either Samsung or my provider. It's been rebooting ever since i have it.
Questions:
- Anybody else having this problem?
- Is there a way to find out what i causing the reboots?
- If i root my phone, would i be able to troubleshoot this better?
- In case i root my device, is there a list of Samsung bloatware that is know to be safe to remove? My aim is to remove everything that might cause these reboots.
Thanks,
Ton.

Hi...
Have you tried factory resetting the phone from recovery. This solves a host of problems usually accompanied with OTA updates...Ensure you make a back up of your data...before doing this.
Cheers

Well, not good. I am now stuck at the Samsung activation screen. I enter my (correct) details and i get a "Processing Failed". I guess i am now down to rooting and install a custom ROM that doesn't have this crappy Samsung stuff.

Yeah, i just had to remember my Samsung account. Now i am back in business. My phone is like new. New as in using battery like h*ll. Thinking about flashing a ROM that increases my battery life. Any suggestions?

Flashing a Custom ROM is easy. The tricky part is rooting and installing custom recovery. Since you are already on the latest Android version, you can disable any app that is causing battery drain..after rooting. Here is a useful guide...

Yeah, i tried to do that, but i keep having issues with a PIT file i apparently don't need. I am using Jodin (Mac here) and Jodin is asking me for a PIT file. I have a thread about that here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...-915f-fy-g-t3398339/post67596487#post67596487
Any ideas?
BTW, after the factory reset the phone keeps rebooting itself.... Problem still exists.
Reboots
Well I am in the same boat with my edge. I am currently using it as a remote! I have booted into safe mode...nothing. Wiped the cache and hard reset it twice. I have never rooted a phone but it seems like that will be my only option. It doesn't seem that easy to do. How do you find the roms that work with your phone?

You can find ROMs in the Galaxy Note Edge section of this forum. I changed my Note Edge for a Galaxy J7 and it's faster, more modern and has a battery life 10 times longer than my Note Edge. Ah, and no reboots.
No more Note Edge for me.
When the Android O OTA update is available from my carrier, will updating wipe out data? I know we can get the update files and manually flash them (right now without having to wait for carriers), but that will wipe data which I'd like to avoid doing. But if the carrier OTA will wipe the data anyways, then there's no reason to wait
As a side note, with other phones I probably would have rooted by now, but it honestly hasn't seemed necessary with the Pixel yet. Since I haven't rooted so far, I'd kind of like to avoid it. The only thing I wish I had right about now is TWRP and Titanium Backup :/... that would make updates wiping data irrelevant.

Nevermind, now irrelevant
Enrolling in the beta program (https://www.google.com/android/beta) will give you the update immediately, without wiping anything.

That's what I've just done also.
Does frustrate me that they release the carrier supported updates before those with sim free devices
I got the ota update but couldn't update. Keeps telling me that there's an installation problem. Been trying all day. Anyone has the sams thing going? Im on verizon

If I do this and am offered the update from Google, do I first need to return to stock? I'm on PureNexus right now. I assume that would cause issues if I tried to update?

I'm not sure, I was already on stock so I didn't have that issue. I would assume going back to stock would be the recommended method, though.

Try cleaning the cache from the "Google Play Services" app so that it can update freshly.

You have to be fully stock and unrooted to take an OTA. There are some mild exceptions but I'm not going to go into all the details. You defnitely can't take stock ROM OTAs when you're running a custom ROM such as PureNexus.
