Both my fiance and i have n5s but I noticed on her battery chart her says Google services while mine says Google play services. Both have different icons. I checked both our version numbers are the same for Google play services.
Anyone seen this before? Also she gets kick ass battery right out of the box while I struggle and tweak to get similar battery life.

Now that you mentioned this I have seen both icons. Battery life is fine and originally I thought your phone had the older icon until I went into mine this morning and I see the same one you have. I swear the last time I checked this (a week or so ago) it was the new style icon??? I did just unroot/relock the phone for a possible RMA yesterday...I wouldn't think that had anything to do with it though....

At first I thought it was because I had Google now on but even I turned mine off it disappeared from the battery chart but eventually came back with the Google play services icon.
Strange indeed.

If I remember right, these are separate services. Google Play services has to do with Google Play, meaning checking for app updates, activity in the Google Play app itself, etc. Google Services deals with the "Google Services Framework" service, which includes Gmail, Hangouts, etc.
Of course, Google changes things all the time, so who knows.

i clicked on each one. both listed the same services underneath it
GOOGLE CONTACTS SYNC
GOOGLE BACKUP TRANSPORT
GOOGLE SERVICES FRAMEWORK
GOOGLE PLAY SERVICES
GOOGLE ACCOUNT MANAGER
Oh... that is weird then. Maybe some services trigger one or the other term in the battery meter, and it simply depends which one spoke up first (or last). Sounds like Google is merging everything into Play services, and simply haven't updated all the other services yet.

Hi there
Does anyone else have issues with the latest traffic consumption from the play services / play store?
My "Play Services" have transferred about 4 GB of data in the last 2 days, most of it over wifi after I disabled mobile data for it. This is very odd and I can't see any reason for that. So does anybody else noticed such strange behaviour or has any idea what could cause that huge amount of traffic?

Big apps require permission to update if you're not on wi-fi. But if you're on wi-fi, and you have automatic updating enabled, they'll go ahead on update on their own. If you've got a few big games installed, and they've been waiting for a wi-fi signal to update, it's possible they all updated in the past couple days.
Thank you for your answer, I am quite aware that this could be a possible cause. But I do not have big games installed. And I forgot to mention that of course I first checked the play store to see if there were any app updates, even though I'm quite sure I don't have that much apps installed that they could generate 4 GB of traffic.
Also, I do not sync my app files with my google account, so this could also not be the case. The only data which is synced is my phone book and my personal details, which both could never have a size of over 4 GB.
This is the thing: I don't see any reason, why play services should generate that much traffic without updating apps or syncing data (except it has an error like syncing to much or the same data over and over again). That's why I opened this thread to ask, if anyone has similar problems.

That's certainly weird. Where are you viewing this data usage? Just the basic "Data usage" list in Settings? Scrolling through mine, I can't find "Play Services", just "Google Play Store" and "Google Services" (the latter being very minimal). If you used Google Play Music to stream audio, or whatever the TV/Movie app is called, it should show up as those, and not Google Play Store or Services or whatever.

I first noticed that behaviour yesterday when my carrier sent me a message, that the traffic included in my data plan was fully used. I then disabled the background data option for play services.
I look in the "data usage" statistic in the settings (Not sure if it is called like that, my android is in german). There is the entry "Google Play Services", but you are right, there is a seperate one for the play Store.
According to the entry, "Google Play Services" is the group with the following apps:
"Google Service ... "
"Google Backup ..."
"Google Account..."
"Google Play Service"
"Google Contacs ..."
Unfortunately, the full names are not shown, but overlapped by the statistic bar.
But thanks to checking that group I just got an idea, why this possibly could happen. I used Apps Ops recently to deny the access to some parts for play services, maybe it just tries to sync some settings, fails and try again every minute or so. I will try, if reverting those settings will solve the problem and will post the results.

OK, I see what you're looking at. On my phone (Samsung running 4.2.2) it's listed as "Google Services", but it has the same listings. Not sure if it's listed differently because yours is a different version of Android, or because yours is in German.

That certainly sounds like it could be the culprit. Still, 4 gigs sounds like a bit much, especially in only 2 days. I've downloaded torrents bigger than 4gb that took longer than that. But I guess if it's trying every waking second to connect, it's possible.
I will try, if reverting those settings will solve the problem and will post the results.

On my phone, if you scroll down to the bottom, there's an option to restrict it from using data only on wi-fi (see attachment). Or just go back to your old settings. I'm on the last day of my billing cycle, and it's only used 22MB of data on my phone.
Well, it seems the denied access rights were the problem, after reverting them (or better: disable app ops for the play services) everything is back to normal. It's a bit strange that it took some days until the problem occurred, but that's how it sometimes is.
Thank you again for your help.

If it doesnt drain battery, it isn't Google Play Services.
Also, it is very advisable to stick to the one pre-installed on your phone. The ones you downloaded may not be suitable, or might been tampered with.
If you do not intend to use any google services, then just uninstall "updates" then disable it. viola power drain plugged. But be warned, you WILL get loads of FCs on apps or just by doing nothing. many many many apps / phone functions rely on Google Play Services.
having said all those, do you even know what google play services is? it drains battery for a good reason, because it is running many things in the background.
Google play services is involved in almost everything you do with your phone, from dialing numbers to sms to location services etc..
Also, when you say you have been downloading and installing different versions of Google play services, be warned, using the wrong version will cause a bigger drain on your phone battery.
thanks alot, i know what it is but i deleted the pre installed version on my phone (le max 2)...guess i will have to re install my OS then....sad and annoying

If you have a Huawei Nova 2s and you havent tried one of the steps i did then give it a go! Let me know how your situation is and if you hav done anything i havent
I got the Huawei Nova 2s in China Last December, not realising it would be China Exclusive at the time. As soon as i left China, I searched it up immedietly but couldnt find anything on this model so i just followed other articles and threads and stuff. I ended up installing the following:
Google play store, Google play services, Google play services for instant apps, Google Accounts manager, Google Services Franeworks (and a GMS with a GMS installer before all those idk if that made any difference other than adding a Google tab in settings but that had nothing important).
After doing so i could FINALLY open google play store..
BUT
it was stuck on a checking info loop T^T
then i decided to go on google and just search to the latest versions of the things i downloaded. apparrently all the websites i used provided doenloads that werent the latest version so i deleted all of them and installed the updated apks.
after doing so i got something i thought i would nev get....
A notification from google play services telling me to update it in the play store. So i clicked on it and waited on play store...
And then...
It happened...
IT WORKED
I COULDNT BELEIVE IT
i downloaded all the apps that u would need ( youtube i downloaded from an apk ;P but i updated it on the play store and i logged in on youtube which logged me in on play store)
*BUT*
After a week or so it stopped working again.
I went on youtube an it wouldnt load.
I went on the play store and it wouldnt load
I went on google chrome an it wouldnt load
I was so sad and i did the stupid thing of deleting everything and reinstalling it
now every 2-4 seconds i get a notification from play services
and you might be thinking "But i thought u said that was good!"
It was when it worked.
I clicked on it the first time after reinstalling and google play store wouldnt load so I just gave up.
but like i said i recieve notifications every 2-4 seconds. It was really annoying and eventually i just blocked it from sending notifications.
I think the problem with why it didn't work again was because if you go to:
Settings then "User & Accounts"
I have a tab that says "Google"
and when i click on it it has the accounts i logged in on.
The reason why I think this is a problem is because it is already logged in and the app wants me to log in.
I have tried to remove the accounts but it didn't work for some reason.
(BTW i installed all the different things after reading MANY posts and articles and stuff, Google accounts manager being the last one i installed i think.)
Also keep in mind that this was all in the period of January and February.
Eventually i just gave up.
Hey. I have a quick question. I have 2 of the same device. 2 old Samsung galaxy tab E's. On one the Google services was called Google play services with the correct icon and on the other it was called just Google services with the Android icon. Why is this happening they also had the same amount of precesses running. I'm just wondering why the different names. On the one that had just Google services Some times it would start another one called Google play services and then go away by itself. Sorry if this is a bit messy hehe. I'm going to hard reset them And see if it makes a difference.
I am noticing that in the playstore latest version 16.7.21 My apps & games tab, the beta apps tab has now disappeared or been removed.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
I have been having a back and forth email fight with Google regarding their proprietary Play Store software which for some unknown reason keeps dropping my Beta Apps List in My Apps and Games.
For the last 4 emails they keep telling me that my firmware is in BETA and therefore Samsung Problem . And i keep telling them its NOT. And since the Play Store is owned and created maintained by Google that this is a bug and their responsibility.
However they say its NOT.
Why does nobody in the world these days have the sense to understand and listen to the customer.

Seems that the only way I can fix the issue is to clear data and cache from play services and cache from playstore.
Annoying though, its gotta be done daily or twice a day on occasions.
Have the latest playstore version 18 and play services. Dosent make any difference whatsoever.
Google need to find the glitch and repair it.
Is play store showing uncertified at the bottom of play store settings?

It's certified and updated to the latest version and latest play services.
It's strange because the other Google Account on the phone doesn't do it. Which is why I think it is something to do with Google and an issue with my account.
I had an issue with my carriers data usage app, it would give me errors and not let me use it. That turned out to be an issue with my account on their end.
Have you tried removing the problem account, rebooting then adding the account back?

Yes tried that, which was one of Google's suggested fixes but did not work.
But for some reason Google are adamant that my firmware is beta, even though I provided them a screenshot. They keep mentioning its Samsung at fault, i don't see how when it's Google Playstore and /or Google play services or account server at fault.
I think that the ROM framework can affect play services. There were plenty of issues on custom ROMs on my old N6 back in the day.
The fact that Google was stating the firmware is in beta was what made me wonder if the device was certified.

The last thing to try is a factory reset, but then I have to mess around with Google Pay, which always is a royal Pain in the butt my bank is usable on Pay, but i always have to contact them to set up. My other Bank just asks to login to the app then approves it.
Might stick with cleaning data and cache and see if anything gets fixed.
