[Resolved] Massive network traffic from play services - General Questions and Answers

Hi there
Does anyone else have issues with the latest traffic consumption from the play services / play store?
My "Play Services" have transferred about 4 GB of data in the last 2 days, most of it over wifi after I disabled mobile data for it. This is very odd and I can't see any reason for that. So does anybody else noticed such strange behaviour or has any idea what could cause that huge amount of traffic?

Big apps require permission to update if you're not on wi-fi. But if you're on wi-fi, and you have automatic updating enabled, they'll go ahead on update on their own. If you've got a few big games installed, and they've been waiting for a wi-fi signal to update, it's possible they all updated in the past couple days.

Thank you for your answer, I am quite aware that this could be a possible cause. But I do not have big games installed. And I forgot to mention that of course I first checked the play store to see if there were any app updates, even though I'm quite sure I don't have that much apps installed that they could generate 4 GB of traffic.
Also, I do not sync my app files with my google account, so this could also not be the case. The only data which is synced is my phone book and my personal details, which both could never have a size of over 4 GB.
This is the thing: I don't see any reason, why play services should generate that much traffic without updating apps or syncing data (except it has an error like syncing to much or the same data over and over again). That's why I opened this thread to ask, if anyone has similar problems.

That's certainly weird. Where are you viewing this data usage? Just the basic "Data usage" list in Settings? Scrolling through mine, I can't find "Play Services", just "Google Play Store" and "Google Services" (the latter being very minimal). If you used Google Play Music to stream audio, or whatever the TV/Movie app is called, it should show up as those, and not Google Play Store or Services or whatever.

I first noticed that behaviour yesterday when my carrier sent me a message, that the traffic included in my data plan was fully used. I then disabled the background data option for play services.
I look in the "data usage" statistic in the settings (Not sure if it is called like that, my android is in german). There is the entry "Google Play Services", but you are right, there is a seperate one for the play Store.
According to the entry, "Google Play Services" is the group with the following apps:
"Google Service ... "
"Google Backup ..."
"Google Account..."
"Google Play Service"
"Google Contacs ..."
Unfortunately, the full names are not shown, but overlapped by the statistic bar.
But thanks to checking that group I just got an idea, why this possibly could happen. I used Apps Ops recently to deny the access to some parts for play services, maybe it just tries to sync some settings, fails and try again every minute or so. I will try, if reverting those settings will solve the problem and will post the results.

OK, I see what you're looking at. On my phone (Samsung running 4.2.2) it's listed as "Google Services", but it has the same listings. Not sure if it's listed differently because yours is a different version of Android, or because yours is in German.

That certainly sounds like it could be the culprit. Still, 4 gigs sounds like a bit much, especially in only 2 days. I've downloaded torrents bigger than 4gb that took longer than that. But I guess if it's trying every waking second to connect, it's possible.
I will try, if reverting those settings will solve the problem and will post the results.

On my phone, if you scroll down to the bottom, there's an option to restrict it from using data only on wi-fi (see attachment). Or just go back to your old settings. I'm on the last day of my billing cycle, and it's only used 22MB of data on my phone.

Well, it seems the denied access rights were the problem, after reverting them (or better: disable app ops for the play services) everything is back to normal. It's a bit strange that it took some days until the problem occurred, but that's how it sometimes is.
Thank you again for your help.

Different Google services icons?

Both my fiance and i have n5s but I noticed on her battery chart her says Google services while mine says Google play services. Both have different icons. I checked both our version numbers are the same for Google play services.
Anyone seen this before? Also she gets kick ass battery right out of the box while I struggle and tweak to get similar battery life.

Now that you mentioned this I have seen both icons. Battery life is fine and originally I thought your phone had the older icon until I went into mine this morning and I see the same one you have. I swear the last time I checked this (a week or so ago) it was the new style icon??? I did just unroot/relock the phone for a possible RMA yesterday...I wouldn't think that had anything to do with it though....

At first I thought it was because I had Google now on but even I turned mine off it disappeared from the battery chart but eventually came back with the Google play services icon.
Strange indeed.

If I remember right, these are separate services. Google Play services has to do with Google Play, meaning checking for app updates, activity in the Google Play app itself, etc. Google Services deals with the "Google Services Framework" service, which includes Gmail, Hangouts, etc.
Of course, Google changes things all the time, so who knows.

i clicked on each one. both listed the same services underneath it
GOOGLE CONTACTS SYNC
GOOGLE BACKUP TRANSPORT
GOOGLE SERVICES FRAMEWORK
GOOGLE PLAY SERVICES
GOOGLE ACCOUNT MANAGER
Oh... that is weird then. Maybe some services trigger one or the other term in the battery meter, and it simply depends which one spoke up first (or last). Sounds like Google is merging everything into Play services, and simply haven't updated all the other services yet.

[Q] Google play store not working

Hey everyone,
Title says it all really over the past few days over several devices and different users in my household we have noticed that Google play store isn't working properly, we are receiving errors, connections issues and general problems overall.
I contacted Google who didn't do much in all honesty and they advised me to clear the cache for the app on my phone and clear data on both app and googleplay services, which I have done but since doing so my okay store loads but I get the error message check you connection and try again.
I have reinstalled the app using the apk on here and still the same problem.
I'm not to worried about it as I'm pretty sure the problem lies with Google especially since its happening in several device (using different accounts and same accounts)
Is there a fix for this or is it Google causing the fault as I have searched the net and found people with similar issues. (isitdownrightnow.com)
Many thanks

Got this one solved for you mate, had the same problem.......... All to do with automatic time and date being out of sync with the play store. Go to time and date settings disable the automatic time zone and automatic time and date. change the date manually to say....the same date but 2013. go back to home, then go back to date and time settings, enable both time zone and time & date auto's, and hey presto........play store's back to normal.
happy days
What do you mean when you say "not working"? Do you get an error message? Does it simply crash/force close?
Did you do something to the devices between the Play Store working and not working? Did you change your internet setup somehow? Did you move to a different country? Did you start worshiping Lord Xenu?
Play Store needs to be a system app. You say you reinstalled it, so I'll assume your devices have root. When you sideload an app it installs as a "user" app. Play Store needs to be a system app. Use whatever app you used to uninstall it to change it to a system app (most root apps that can uninstall system apps have this feature...if what you used doesn't, you can find ones that will, some free). If this isn't the cause of your problem, we'll need more info to help you.

[Noob][CM13][HowTo]Solve the "Unfortunately, Google Play Services has stopped error".
Hello Everyone!
I researched everywhere about this "Google Play Services has stopped error" and could not find any one method that worked. So I just had a look in the "report" of the error and found out that it wanted location access to continue.
I have the following version of CM: 13.0-20160513-NIGHTLY-falcon
[What I've tried]
As said in other places, I went to
Settings-> Apps-> Google Play Services-> Permissions-> And enabled everything, including Location.
But didn't work. It kept on showing that random error anytime I used any Google app.
[What To do]
So here's what you need to do.
Since this is for CyanogenMod, you may have something called "Privacy" in settings. We're gonna use that.
Goto
1) Settings-> Privacy-> Privacy Guard.
2) Click on 3 dots on right top and tap on Advanced.
3) Under the Location Section, click on Google Play Services.
4) In "Coarse Location", change from " Allowed" to "Ignored".
This should fix the problem. (I've checked this in many phones and it worked!) Click on thanks if it worked!
---------------------------------
EXTRAS: (Only for developers )
On seeing the Error Report, I found that it needed a "Fine" location access whereas, in Privacy Guard, it showed "Coarse" location access (a different less accurate location permission).
I know that, in addition to having "ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION" in the manifest, we also have to request them from the user at runtime (using requestPermissions()) checking with (using checkSelfPermission()).
I guess this Open Source Play Services Edition (which I downloaded) has not been still modified for API 23 . But it said, Marshmallow, If this is really the case, then some develepor please do it! I'm not much into this!
Thank you very much! Just wanted to add as this happened to me a couple times now as well:
If "Setup Wizard" constantly crashes (making the phone extremely hard to navigate) just try to get into it's app settings (e.g. via "Apps" or "Memory") and allow it all of the permissions it needs.
Resource: Google search.
It worked for me thanks ! Motog1 running on cm13
Thank you! You save my phone. I'm beginning to give up my cm13 on Xperia L.

Any way to disable "you must have Google play services to run (name of app that doesn
Title cut off, rest should say "doesn't require Google play services to run"
I only use the play store basically, and have no issues with manually enabling before checking for app updates or to download new apps (on my newer device, my older device doesn't even require them for the play store at all)
But things like ccleaner, my emoji keyboard, a few other apps I can't think, of annoyingly claim to need these services to run... While I'm actively running them and using them just fine without.
On a device without the option "disable notifications for this app"either within the app itself, or within my older 4.0.4 device that runs just fine despite it being older... How can I get rid of these annoyances?
Play services are a huge battery and ram hog which I keep disabled unless needed. So any "just install play services" comments isn't exactly what I'm looking for...
I've looked around in disable service (the app) for these apps, unable to find anything looking relevant.
Any help would be appreciated
Play Services are often used for authentication reasons. Meaning the apps look if you have a genuine version. For freemium apps they check for any in app purchases you might have done.
Other common cases are for push notifications or location services etc. These are often only minor or optional features of apps. That's why they usually work nonetheless without having Play Services active.
The only easy option is to use an alternative app store like the Amazon App Store or F-Droid. All the apps over there are pretty much guaranteed to work without Play Services.
There are also some projects out there that aim for a system without Play Services. A quick search should yield quite some results.
If you are rooted and capable of using XPosed, then there is a module in the repo somewhere that does exactly what you are looking for - hiding the pop up.
Can't remember the name right now and don't know if it is still maintained, but searching the modules should provide it to you.
However, Google Play Service shouldn't be so much of a power drainer any more. Beginning with Android 6 / M the battery optimizations are quite enormous, even though the Play Services are excluded from the system wide optimization (because they take care of these optimizations). To further improve the footprint, you could disable the location services and wireless scanning services.

Google location services in other apps after sideloading GMS - can it be fixed?

Hey guys,
So I sideloaded GMS on my p40 pro with redskull's instructions on youtube and didn't have notifications after that. Then used Multi tool 8 to disable gsf and then enable it again. Notifications came back, but location services aren't working correctly. In google maps, I have my location, but no arrow on the blue dot, so I can't see which direction I'm facing. Other apps that use google's location services don't work at all, they stall at "google play services are updating".
Is there a way to get location services in other apps working?
Thanks in advance!
disable Google Services Framework then works.
Thanks for your reply. I did that and it worked.
So now the play store isn't working. Are there any other disadvantages by disabling gsf?
If you need Playstore -> activate gsf then deactivate again
I don't know what sideload meant, nor why would you disable anything, but on my P40 I got maps and notifications working. I used another guide.

Any idea why Gmail notifications aren't working after disabling gfs?
Duplicate post
While we wait that @stewakg posts mentioned guide, disabling GSF still does not work for applications like Tripadvisor which require Google location precision to work. Such applications continously ask to enable Google precision and do not acquire position.
Any solution for this?
I am sorry all for late response.
This is guide I have used. I got European model bought in Germany. I have maps, play store with pay(can buy apps and games) and notifications.
Also I'd that helps, I got YouTube Vanced and microG installed.
Hope this will help someone. Cheers.

Did you find a solution to this? I have many regional specific apps that don't want to work. They have similar failures as you're describing after loading GMS/GSF. My problematic apps are Lyft/Bay Wheels and Gig Car Share.

No sorry. I have no solution for this.
The best thing is with GSF disabled for me: i will not use location in tripadvisor but I will survive.
I understand that for you is not that good but I hope for a real solution.

Freeze again GSF. Go to Aurora Store and update Google Play Services. Unfreeze GSF. Restart.
I tried and locations work but I still get "Play Services are updating" in apps where a map is supposed to show, like Tripadvisor. So I can see the map which is important too. Can you try this and let me know? Thx

Okay, I got the apps I needed working with Google Maps integrated in them. Maybe this will work for you. (I am still having issues with notifications for many apps with GMS installed.)
I have a C636 variant running 10.1.0.131. I started by following Redskull's guide here: https://youtu.be/4vki3DasrYc
That mostly went fine. The Play Store was still a bit buggy and I was still getting lots of notifications about running Play Services on a non-certified device.
Once I installed everything I needed from the Play Store, I then used Multitool to disable Google Services Framework (com.google.android.gsf). While GSF is disabled the Google Play Store does not work, as most of your know. Google Maps integrations work in all of the apps I've tried so far: Lyft, Bay Wheels, Gig Car Share, Lime, Bird, Revel, Zipcar, Getaround, Flywheel, Transit, Swarm/Foursquare, and Yelp.
Notably, Spin does not work. It keeps telling me "For a better experience turn on device location, which uses Google's location services" and no matter if I hit No Thanks or OK, it keeps popping up over and over again making the app unusable. Bay Wheels has a separate bug where it cannot access the camera to unlock a bike, but it gives the option to enter the bike number instead so it's not a big issue. QR unlock works with Lime. That's all I've tested so far though.
Google Location Services does not work
No matter how you got GMS onto your Huawei Phone / Tablet that doesn't come with GMS, no matter what workaround you use to get everything working (i.e freezing GSF to get push notifications working), there doesn't appear to be any solution for GLS. It simply doesn't work. Any app that relies on it exclusively is broken. For instance Google Location Sharing, or Google Timeline. Probably others, but those are the ones I use the most. Google Maps, Waze, and other navigation apps will just use your GPS to get your location (which doesn't work if you're in an enclosed building with no view of the satellites). You can try to turn it on: Settings->Location->Location Services->Google Location Accuracy->Improve Location Accuracy, but it will turn itself off shortly.
My timeline works fine and "improve location accuracy" was on by default when I just checked. I even turned it off and on again and it stays on.
Mine works as well as does location sharing.

OK, that's great. Maybe you could tell me how you accomplished that? A working Google Location Services is probably the last thing I need to get going on my P40 Pro+. With GSF frozen, "improve location accuracy" keeps getting disabled. If I try to share my location, I get "Location sharing isn't enabled on this device. Fix", but Fix does nothing. With GSF unfrozen, I get a never ending stream of Google Play Protection messages (which can be turned off, but I'm sure still affect the phone), I can turn on Location Accuracy, but Location Sharing still says "Location sharing isn't enabled on this device. Fix" and a message "Unable to get an accurate location" when I press Fix even with a good GPS lock.
I didn't do anything other than follow the guide from 26th sept, I don't freeze play and canceled the notifications as per the guide. I also manually manage maps rather than let it be automatic.

With Google Services Framework unfrozen, Google Play Books no longer works. And even though Location Accuracy is enabled, I still get the ""Location sharing isn't enabled on this device. Fix" message when I try to share my location through Google Maps. Do you know what versions of Google Play Store, Google Play Services, and Google Services Framework you have installed? Are any patched or are they all unmodified Google apps?
