Hi guys, so I have a stock N5 and it won't charge over USB or AC unless the phone is turned off. I've tried to factory reset with no luck.
My current theory is that something's up with android itself, instead of BIOs. Has anybody else experienced anything similar to this?

when I first turned on my N5 and connected it via USB to do various root related stuff, my battery actually went down with each reboot. Even connecting to the AC cable charged it pretty slowly. But now it's charging fine via USB or AC (although the charging speed with USB does seem a lot slower than my previous phone, Galaxy S3)

Yeah, the phone charges over AC slowly here too, but strangely enough it won't even make a USB connection with a computer as your phone did.
Same Problem!
Hi,
I'm having the same problem.. I could use it well and charge it over USB nicely but know it only charges when the phone is turned off. You could solve the problem??

Hi, You don't have the box ticked in the battery screen do you ?
the one that says
When device is turned on, do not charge the battery when connected to the PC
this should be unticked.

Hi Dean
Now I dont have it ticked !!
Any other idea's?
The problem could also be your usb line or usb port. try some alternatives first.
Tried everything, different usb leads, different sockets even different laptops !!

Same problem here. But i changed the USB cable and problem solved. Did u tried it, with the official USB cable from HTC? (I guess so, just to check)
Yep I did !!
Will try again when I get home though..
Thats strange... my TP came with UK power adapter, so I couldnt use AC power until I get an adapter (4 days)... in these days I always charged via USB (all night long)
Well I tried the official usb lead and it charged last night, Im now using the official lead again using same laptop and same usb port and guess what !!! It wont charge again

Hi,
this is sounding kinda weird..
What kind of wall charger came with the phone, mine is a wall adapter that i plug the USB lead into to charge the phone
So i know my USB lead works as this charges the phone with both the adapter and via USB on any PC ( i have tried home and work PC's)
Sounds like it could be a handset issue then ???
mine is a Vodafone handset that i bought unlocked and flashed with a different ROM and its working fine..

Laptops can be a bit funny about USB charging, I remember one laptop I had wouldn't charge my phone (SE K800i at the time), unless it was on mains power. The laptop had to be powered up while on the mains, with no USB devices plugged in, then it would supply power to the ports.
My work laptop is also a bit funny about it, I had to disable powering down of the USB ports otherwise it won't power them back up, but since if nothing is connected there's not much of a problem. There is also the possibility it's powering the port, which will charge the phone, but not enough power to actually make it worthwhile, you can check to see how much power is going to the ports by looking under device manager. So you might want to check it's not a problem with your laptop.

This is exactly what mine turned out to be. At work I've got a Dell Optiplex 745 tower and none of the USB ports put out enough power to charge my phone and have the phone on. I've got wifi turned off but the data, EDGE, is always on. If the display is on and I'm in Storage mode there's very little charging going on. It doesn't drain quickly but it definitely isn't going up. If I'm in sync mode it drains pretty quickly and it seems as tho it's not even charging at all.
What I do now is plug it in at work and turn off the display. Kinda sucks but I need my phone fully charged at all times.
I have the same problem....
the usb and the factory usb are different if u have looked carefully
firstable, the shape of the heads are different. secondly, there are 4 pins inside usb and 6 pins inside the factory usb...I guess that's the problem.
Try messing with the USB to PC settings. I know my TP was acting funny and not charging, and after i disabled network functionality, i think it started charging. GL.
Thamks for all the replys, if done everytjhing sometimes it will charge sometimes it wont, I have it connected to my laptop all day for internet sharing, it has charged up very slowly twive, and not at all 8 or 9 times, same usb slot , laptop plugged into mains, official usb lead used ( it never charges from another usb lead )
This is the 3rd htc Ive owned and the first to play up like this over usb !!

Have you tried it plugged into a desktop computer? It would rule out the laptop being the problem if it didn't work. You could also use a mini-usb cable, which could also prove if the official cable is a problem.
Having similar problem...
I'm having a similar problem. My laptop used to charge Touch Pro when i connect it. Now for reason i noticed that it doesn't anymore.
I could be wrong, but I thought I read in the manual that when the phone is synched to a PC, it only charges in trickle mode, so it doesn't recharge the battery efficiently. Is this the problem?
same problem here. Mine was working fine with ANY charger whether it be USB, car charger or wall charger. But now it will only charge with the htc plug but not the HTC wall charger. The plug is the one with the ports for tv-out, headphones.
I'm going to go try and do a hard reset.I dont understand what could cause this.
Hi all,
My friend's OPO does not charge when connected to the USB port of a computer. It is stock, unrooted, KK 4.4.2.
It charges fine when he charges via the wall charger. My OPO charges fine out of the box, with USB on the same laptop and port.
He does not want to factory reset and I am at a loss here. Please advise what I need to check here.
Thanks!

He can buy a universal adapter for the charger. They're pretty cheap.
It's because the laptop isn't putting out enough current. It must be at least 2a to charge properly.

The issue here is that my OPO charges through the same USB port and with the same cable. That's what has me baffled.
Well consider me baffled too.

Anybody has any idea about this issue?
The front panel of my pc case has usb ports that has trouble recognizing or charging any phone. When I plug it in, the phone will show it charging but the battery continues to drain or I can't access the sdcard. Not sure what causes this, but when I plug my phone into the usb ports in the back that are connected directly to the motherboard, then there is no problem.

Thanks for the reply but that is not it. My OPO charges fine from the same port and the same cable.
Anybody got any info on this issue?
Uh, I'd say factory reset or don't worry about it.
Not sure what you expect to hear. But that's probably the first plan of action. Especially since yours works fine.
Opo has higher power requirements. You may need a cable with a 24AWG or better rating (lower allows more current).
Does it work with the stock cable?

My OPO works with any cable, though time to charge is the best on stock cable. But my friend's OPO doesn't charge at all. Even on stock cable.
Unable to make sense of it at all. I may sound like a simpleton, but maybe there is some checkbox I ticked somewhere which is preventing this? UGH!

The phone will work with any cable. Worst-case the cable's resistance and diameter will reduce the maximum charging current significantly but it always will charge the phone.

No USB port has that much current except maybe for highly specialized ones. USB2 is rated on 0.5Amp, USB3 on 0.9
Of course the phone will take significantly longer to charge or may even discharge when used while plugged in.
I can say "me too". My one also didn't charge from powered off PC while Nexus 5 plugged in the same PC with same cable charges fine.
When PC is powered on, One charges intermittently. I.e. I plug it in, it charges for some time and then stops. "OS monitor" shows "discharging [USB power]" state.
Any thoughts?

Cannot charge OnePlusOne via USB
I have the same problem.
The problem seems to have started AFTER upgrading O/S to Cyanogen 12.0.
Cannot charge via USB either from my note PC or Mobile BatteryPak (1.7a).
Above comment that 2a power is required is surprising, as I thought 1a is standard. Maybe there is some Cyanogen bug here?
I found in some Forum to make of SETTINGS - STORAGE - USB COMPUTER CONNECTION, but I do have this setting, and still cannot charge the computer.

It will charge very slowly but will charge faster if the device is off. If you're using it while it's charging it's like filling a bucket up with water that's got a hole in the bottom. It fills up. But slower than it would if there was no hole.
As for the battery pack I have a 2.0a EE Battery pack and it works fine so it might be related to the analogy above.
Sorry to bring up an old topic, But its still hanging and non has really come up with solution. So i thought let's bring some light to it.
My dad has encountered the same issue the other day, I'm basically not much PRO into fixing things like this but by turning on/off USB debugging while connected to PC and also turning on/off Developer options does makes it charging through PC again.
Previously it was charging by PC, but dad has messed up something internally and asked me for help, so this lil so called tricked work for me. I hope this will help others to.
My phone can transfer files at normal speeds in bootloader mode. It can even transfer files fine when booting up to kit kat. the issue is even though it does all I mentioned, it won't charge (or charges too slow to matter) via USB connected a PC or USB to any AC adapters. I've tried many working cables and AC adapters, could someone please help or point me in the write direction?
NOTE: It on occasion charges normally.

If it on occasion charges normally but not all the time then perhaps you have some internal damage at the charge port. Now I have no idea how to fix this but one other possibility you could try with the Nexus 5 is to get a wireless charger and see how that works out for you.

trying a wireless charger right now, same old game. slow charging still. I did notice the battery readings with Ampere, i attached a screenshot. the temp is negative -30 celsius on average often show a negative charging status no matter what charger is plugged in and EVEN with a wireless charger.
Does this mean I have a bad battery?
I'm afraid your guess is as good as mine at this point. I've never experienced that type of problem. I have experience of damage to the charge port with an old nook it behaved just like you said which is why I suggested wireless charging since we have it available on the Nexus.

yea, i bought a wireless charger to no avail. something either within the phones board or my old AC adapter had gone wonky, put a new battery in and the same thing began happening after 2 days.
I got my S6 the week it came out, so I've had it for a decent amount of time, without any problems until last week. One day I experienced a sharp battery drain, and plugged it in my PC to charge. To my surprise it wouldn't charge! It shows that it's charging, but it wont go up in charge. The only way to charge it now is with its own fast charger.
I fiddled with it a bit, (cleared cache, uninstalled apps, etc. ) and I can say the battery drain problem seems to be fixed for now. But I'm still unable to charge it up via the PC (or a laptop) USB port. What may be causing this?
It should charge to any regular usb port. Did you try to other device with usb charging and see if it works? Maybe defective usb ports from pc or laptop i guess.

Yes - I've been charging it that way since the day I got it - no problems whatsoever. This happened suddenly, after the battery drained rapidly - I'm guessing something went bad inside the circuitry?
I've tried a couple different PCs, laptops and USB ports. I just stays flat, even thou the red light is indicating a charge.
The only way to actually charge it now, is with a charger.
Once a device goes near zero, it must be charged with a wall plug. After that it should be okay from computers. And it sounds like an app updated.

After recharging from a wall it should be okay to charge from your computer as long as it doesn't get below 5%.

Usb port is not sufficient enough i guess.
Try to make it at 15% at least using fast carge adapter and try the usb port. It should work.
I charge the phone everyday up to 100% (using its charger), so it's not that it's not charged. Regardless of how much charge it has left, it wont get any juice from a USB port anymore. Again, this wasn't the case before last week, so I know it's not the USB port, and I know that it should charge, but it wont. I'm thinking to hard reboot it, and if that doesn't work, to take it back for warranty service. I was just wondering if anyone else has seen such a thing before.
Oh so i guess it must be a hardware fault. Try bring it up to sammy center for them to check. No, I have not experienced that issue before. Normal charging via usb port works without problem.
So a problem reared its ugly head a few days ago...
I tried to connect my phone to my PC to transfer files, but the PC wouldn't detect the phone. It wasn't charging when connected to the computer either. I tried different USB cables and different computers - same problem. If I turn the phone off it suddenly charges, which tells me the USB port on the phone is working. I also tried different chargers too.
My device is rooted, so I thought it may be the ROM I'm running. I wiped the device and flashed another ROM, but still the same problem persists.
It seems like a firmware issue to me as it charges when the phone is switched off. I hardly ever use the USB port on my S6 as I usually charge wireless. I tried cleaning any lint and dust out the port too using compressed air and a toothpick - it didn't help.
Does anyone have any idea what the fault may be?
Are You using USB 3.0 port? Cause I had the same problem. Usb 3.0 never recognised my device. Now after I flashed 6.0.1 the problem is gone.

Tried on USB 3.0, USB 2.0 and a power brick, Mac and PC - all the same result.
Similar Problem
I have similar problem too. My phone is Samsung Galaxy Alpha. Yesterday, I charge my phone using Pineng Powerbank and then i notice that it show the lightning symbol but the battery is not charging but decrease and my phone become too hot. Since I don't bring the charger, I'd try to connect with different USB cable to PC and the problem is still the same. Then I remove the battery for few minute until the phone is cooling down. After switch on the phone again, my phone quickly heating up but the battery is normal. I'd buy new battery for replacement but the problem still occur. My phone also is not charging when in safe mode and only charging when it is turn off. Then I made a factory reset and it's work. Both of my battery is working too. What is actually happening? Does the powerbank is the culprit or virus? Thank you.
