4K video so disappointing

I've been recording a few 4k clips. I think its pretty pointless A) No OIS , you need a tripod only reall for using it B) Frame rate not 30fps all the time stutters a bit.
Other than that its the most detailed amazing video on my 2560 x 1440p monitor (No 4k monitor yet), but with no OIS its really not practical at all. Or usable. And not to mention the 5 minute clip limit...
Anyone here going to honestly be using it over 1080p? (Unless you carry a tripod) Guess i'm too use to the G2's OIS camera which gives much smoother videos.

Honestly, mostly I just use 720p. In my opinion the 4k function is an marketing trick by Samsung. Well it works but the mainstream market needs a few more years until it's the non+ ultra. It's nice to have but I'm quietly sure I won't use it at all.

Agreed. 100% marketing gimmick. Other than playing with it for a few minutes, doubt I will ever use it again. If it was 4K 30fps with image stabilization yes.

I was actually thinking of filming a commercial with it. I do have a tripod, slider and a clamp to hold it. I will also be shooting the same scenes in 1080P on my HPX300 just in case.

I wish you guys would quit with the whining.. the camera (from what I have seen) is clearly better than its predecessors or just about anything on the market for a smartphone. Samsung has clearly improved this phone in every way, its by far the best phone on the market. No other phone can anywhere close to what this phone offers, the features are endless. So stop crying and be happy that you are fortunate to own the best phone on the market. IMO

I don't think that the 4k ability is outstanding but someone has to take the first step. And that the note 3 can handle the bandwidth needed for 4k is enough to wow me right there.(it is very compressed I'd imagine)
And to people saying its a marketing gimmick, isn't the iphones slow mo feature the same? The note 3 can do 720p 120fps just like the iphone but there not hyping it up. 4k is more exciting then watching every video on YouTube in slow mo. If I want to watch slow mo I want to see it at 1000fps with a true slow mo camera.

Uh, 4K is a feature of the snapdragon 800 chipset. Samsung had nothing to do with it. Blame Qualcomm for it being less than desirable.

I imagine xda devs will get around the 5 minute limit soon enough.

I'm so tired of coming to this forum and seeing people constantly complain about things that are either superficial or not mind blowing (etc. speakers not putting out surround sound 7.1, 4k not being worlds better than 1080p).

[Q] 4k video on Note Pro 12.2

I downloaded a 4k video from youtube and copied to Note Pro 12.2. It seems that Note Pro 12.2 cannot handle 4k videos properly. I tried multiple players including MX player. The HW decoder does not work and SW decoder lags and skips frames. Any suggestion for good 4k player for Note Pro 12.2 or any work around?

you can't watch 4k video on 2k display

It's a limitation of the exynos soc. The snapdragon 800 will play 4k content, and can even record in some cases.
But as noted, since 4k is well beyond the native resolution of the screen, I'm not too worried about it.

It is not true. I can watch 4k video on my 2k monitor The real reason is the processor for sure.

Also not concerned due to the very low occurance of 4k media. Im pretty sure others have 4k ciewing working on the exynos note 3 so check there maybe

Everyone realizes that it's physically impossible to see any difference between 1080p and 4k on any screen that's smaller than 60 inches?

Depends on your viewing distance. On a ten ench screen you could see the individual pixels of 1080p at about 8 inches. Too close for normal viewing really. 2k would be about 6 inches and 4k would be at 4 inches. Considering I can zoom anytime I need to and the screen is huge I doubt that I would ever need to hold it that close. The 12.2 is probably a bit farther on viewing distances but still held more than far enough away usually to not need 4k. Only advantage I would see would be art/graphic design.

LOL at 44 years old, I'm lucky if I can even see my fingerprint on my fingers from less than 18-inches away without my reading glasses let alone 8.
I realize people want the most out of their devices and all but surely there's a point of diminishing returns somewhere.
That said, there's something to be said for wanting to ensure a device is future proof. If for example one expects to be shooting videos in 4k and would like to know that the device can handle playback of said material natively then it's reasonable to be concerned with that. I'm not sure how it would all pan out with regards to storage requirements and transfer of large video files but it would be nice if the device did support it out of the box.
Certainly not a deal breaker for me since I still shoot 1080p from my DSLRs.

Im certainly not saying 4k would be bad or unappreciated. However with the sparsity of media in that format and the extra power required to push those extra pixels (both gpu and battery) im personally fine with 2k until these concerns are addressed. Im reasonably sure It can play back 4k video though.......btw what dslr's are you shooting with? I want to replace my camcorder with an interchangeable lense camera for shooting parkour videos. Different lenses for various effects, 1080p 60fps shooting for slow motion, and shallow dof are things I want to play with. Iv been looking at the panasonic g6 mirroless 4/3. Iv read great things about it and many people on personal view contemd that it looks better than a hacked gh2 and almost comparable to the gh3.

Try bs player and archos player with the free codec pack. Somewhere else on the forum a guy said that those both work for him. He even said he could play it on one side with multiwindow while on the browser in another.he was playing downloaded 4k videos btw. Another guy trying to play note 3 4k videos never had any success.

Currently using a D7100. Can't say I recommend it for video but that's not why I have it anyhow. The video stuff I just dabble with.

The real reason is that the needed codec has not been added to the framework!
I have seen phones like Sony Xperia L that the gpu has 1080p decoding power but I can't play 1080p videos with H/W decoder because of lacking the needed codec( VP8 ) .

This exact same problem exists on the Note 3. (Same hardware) It's the Exynos, it's too weak. 1.9gHz is simply not enough, no matter how many cores it has. Cores do not stack. You need at least 2.2gHz individual for 4K.
The N9005 with the same hardware as the P905 handles 4K without issue (As does the P905).
The N900 has, from the very first day, been officially known to be unable to handle 4K. The P900 has identical hardware, and can't handle it either. The Exynos is simply not powerful enough.
Not to mention the Mali GPU is a graphical bottleneck.
Convert the video to a lower resolution. You can use Handbrake for it, it's open source.
This is one of the reasons I refuse to buy an Exynos device.

Stick with 1080 in my opinion. 4k is still being adopted and chances are you don't even have a 4k display. There is no point in recording in a resolution that you don't have a display for due to its larger size in recording 4k

I don't think there'll be 4K on phones for awhile, 1440p has yet to be adopted with the exception of G3. Technology is always changing and it seems like you've already made your decision so why ask? Use 4K if u want, its up to you honestly.
By the way you're speaking about technology becoming old, by the time your son grows up 4K will become obsolete and another standard will be the standard. 4K prices are still very expensive and is not as mainstream as 1080p as it'll take time to adopt.

I could be wrong but I believe uhd is 30fps and DCI is 24fps. So for highest quality, choose uhd.

4k on 1080p TV's will look sharper (in a sense) as the picture is scaled to 1/4.
If the phone had true 1080p @60fps with sound, then that would be the best recording format..

This post doesn't make sense. The OnePlus One does record in 4k, and that's why we're discussing recording modes. Are you talking about 4K Display's on phones?

This is exactly how I see it. However I'm still recording in 1080p. Most of the stuff I film isn't worth storing, so 1080p is fine.
If I would go for 4k I would choose UHD as this is the standard for TV. DCI is true 4k but only used for cinematic recording, so I guess this means black borders on your 4k TV.
At least this is how I understood it, it does not mean it's right [emoji317]

I see a lot of people saying the same but for the life of me I just can't understand why. In the future when you have a UHD TV would you not want to see your recordings in UHD instead of HD?
I don't have a UHD TV yet but I do have a 4k TV but I would always record in the highest quality I can.

Btw, right now UHD seems to be broken.

Strictly resolution wise I see no difference. You may see other differences in terms of brightness and color reproduction but you can get that on newer or higher end 1080p displays.
BTW, the article was updated in May 2014.

120 fps video quality

So I have noticed that when I film 120 fps video with the camera, there is only an option for 720 and it looks all pixelated. Is this a physical limitation of the camera, or is it just to avoid massive files. If it is not a physical limitation, does anyone know of an app that will let you film 120fps in 1080 or 4K? If there are many apps that do this, which are your favorite and why?

as far as i know, it's a physical limitation. And the reason it looks pixelated is cause it's actually less than 720p and upscaled.

They'll always play at 120 fps. You need to use a video editing software to slow it down though.

So the camera doesn't actually record in 4k or 1080p?

It does, just not at 120 fps. 1080p goes at 60, and 4k goes at 30.

It can do both. I recommend not using 4k though because as the user above said, it's only 30 fps. 30 fps is not bad but you'll notice the FPS more than you'll notice the extra resolution which you probabaly only have one device (your g3, which is 2k) that can actually show close to that resolution.

You only need a player that can slow the video playback, on a PC most players can. I haven't looked into any on android but I'm sure they exist

i use a mac so i couldn't tell you a specific one. really anything should work.

yes true, but if you slow it down with software beforehand it will play slow everywhere automatically and then you can upload it to youtube or similar services.

'Cinema Motion' on Samsung plasma tv's plays back at 24fps for smooth movie like motion. I love it compared to the nasty 60/120/240 hz refresh of LCD monitors. If you go to a warehouse club like sam's or costco, you can compare side by side... IF you can find any plasmsas for sale anymore. YMMV.

The Exynos version CPU temperature while recording 4k video

Hi,
I would like to buy the Exynos version of the S8+, but I am curious about the CPU temperature.
I record lots of 4k video with my current phone, and it is capable to record in 4k for 30-40 minutes without overheating. (the CPU is about 65-70 Celsius temperature)
I know there is a 10:00 minutes recording limit in 4k, but with this mod: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8+/themes/zero-camera-mod-bitrates-jpg-hdr-af-t3625797
We can record unlimited 4k video.
So I would like to know what is the temperature of the CPU while recording in 4k for a long time? (at least 8-10 minutes)
Please also write what was the ambient temparature when you shot the video.

The S8+ already has a great camera so why not use it.
BTW recording with smartphone is also good because it is always with you and why spend a lot of more money on a dedicated 4k camera?

I think I asked a simple question about the CPU temperature while recording 4k.
Why are you so hostile? If you can't/don't want to answear while are you trolling?
With my logic why should I buy a decent 4k camera for ~$1000 when once a week I can make a decent quality stable 4k video with my phone. (I can even shoot a more or less decent quality 4k video with my 3 years old OnePlus One but there are situations where the CPU overheats so the video starts to lag)
So that's why I am asking what is the CPU temperature on the S8+ after recording about 10 mins of 4k video.

Not hostile at all. But no one is going to record 4k with a mod and possibly damage the CPU because of a limit that is placed for overheating and then tell you the temperature.

OK, though I only asked to record 10 miniutes 4k video with the stock camera app, and what is the CPU temperature right after it.
