Hello Guys,
I've been on here for a while, and I've recently started my own business call Peekamo. It's a SMS based forum system (not made to replace this forum at all, more like a VERY IMPORTANT POSTS ONLY FORUM), along with personal SMS to anyone at no cost (aka FREE). These are all "real" sms, not smtp so that means not you or the receiver gets charged.
This is my attempt at causing a ripple in the high priced SMS market that the providers currently take advantage of.
So please try it out and let me know what you think. It's still in beta, so please understand if something things are out of place. I would really appreciate any comments or suggestions you may have.
I've already created a forum for XDA users, you can create your own if you wish. Our service currently works in US and Canada, and we're working on getting the rest of the world ready by the end of the month.
Thanks and hope to hear from you all soon.
The site is peekamo.com
Cheers!

Thank you. Our vision for this concept came by when my partner and I were at a club with another friend. After about 2 hours our friend gave his number to this girl that he met. At 6:00 we were at a breakfast place when all of a sudden the phone rings, and guess who it was. Yup, it was the girl. She called every few hours after that bothering him and sending him text messages.
That brought on the idea of anonymizing cell phone numbers by linking them to an ID with the ability to block out people from texting you. When you're finished with an ID and picked up all the girls/boys that you've ever wanted to, just change your ID and the connection is over right there and then.
Other then the anonymity feature, we found that we need to create a community presence so that everyone can use their new Peekamo IDs with others and share common intrests without giving up their phone number.
I don't even use my email as much as I use my peekamo id, and when I use email I sign it "dont' even think of replying, just peekamo me."
Hope to see more of you there.

Ok, So a couple of questions:
1. I signed up, it sent me 2 different "codes" through sms to use as verification, but neither is working. I will be glad to send more information if you wish, let me know your preferred method (PM, email, etc). I guess that wasn't really a question, but whatever.
2. When you say free, how is this done? I pay per text message on Cingular. Your website says "Save more money on your phone bill by using Peekamo.com and send and receive SMS at no cost." I am still going to pay per text message to Cingular, right? Have you figured out some way for them to not charge me per text message? As an example, I am sure I'll be paying $0.20 for the two previously mentioned text message "codes" when I get my Cingular bill. If you have figured out some method for me to use sms from my phone, at no cost, well, holy crap.
3. This ain't no question either. I just want to say regardless of the answers to my above questions, thanks for jumping in to the arena and providing something. We need more people willing to jump.

1. Make sure enter your phone number, email address, and code. Becareful you are not entering zero for O and vice versa. I will check your code in a bit
2. You WILL NOT BE CHARGED for the messages you received, nor will you be charged for any messages sent through the Peekamo network. You are right on the money, just like you pay .20 per msg, Peekamo pays per messages. We subsidize it through ad text at the bottom of the message of up to 20 characters. I think that is fair, no? Peekamo is one of only full no charge sending or receiving text message service in North America, everyone else uses SMTP, so you send free but the receiver pays.
3. Trust me, I know all about the lack of services such as ours. I fully intend on making waves in the industry that's monopolized by the carriers. With enough users on our network, we could seriously cause carriers like Cingular to rethink their 50% price increases in text messaging.
out of curiosity... how do you make money on this? since you stated its your business... is it from the advertising alone?
Do be completely honest. Right now, we don't make money. And it's not all about money. You tube never made a cent, and till today they show negative loses. We are trying to create a service that will be noticed and that will help the mobile community.
We also don't let businesses come on and start their own groups. Businesses pay to create their own private groups just like any other forum or service.
Our goal is to be wide spread and known, not to just make money.
You should go on to the site and check out the about us section, in there you will find all the information you are looking for.
Samsung just released their official help site for the Galaxy S. I just finished a chat session with tech support concerning the GPS issues. Basically, he said they are aware of it and the engineers are working on it. If enough of us report the issue, I'm sure they will feel the pressure to release a fix to us ASAP.
You dont need to register, when it ask you if you have registered you phone, just hit "yes". Then it will bring you to ways you can contact them.

I must have gotten a bad agent, cause she told me there was no patch or fix (at least at the time), and she told me to try everything I've already done. *Sigh* I think I just have bad luck when talking to people online or over the phone.
How will annoying them get it done faster? The help agent isn't going to tell the software engineers to work faster.

Most help lines mark down the general reason for a call. Later the stats are compiled to determine trends. If gps ranks high someone will probably notice and decide it is important.
yup!
Anyway I don't have a big issue with the gps. Just wait 60 seconds and it's good ( in Los Angeles, suburban areas. )

Emailed them and sent them links to all forums that discusses GPS issues.
Got on galaxyshelp.com and talked to a rep. The second I mentioned GPS he gave me a phone number to call and said that higher up reps would have to discuss the issue with me. I'll try calling sometime this weekend and see what I can find out.

wow i said this about a couple of days ago in a diff post and no one replied
This is the email I received from them:
Thank you for your inquiry. We understand your distress concerning the GPS feature of your Samsung Captivate. We recommend obtaining the initial lock while outdoors in clear view of the sky.
You can also try this steps:
You must select Settings > Location and security > Use wireless networks or Use GPS satellites.
Regarding your concern on the GPS capabilities of your phone, Samsung Mobile is aware that under certain conditions, the GPS on our U.S. Galaxy S devices may not be meeting performance expectations. We are diligently evaluating the situation and will provide an update as soon as possible.
We are committed to your satisfaction and would like to assist you in finding a resolution to this issue. We invite you to call Samsung Customer Support by phone at our toll free number 1-888-987-4357 between the hours 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, Central Standard Time. You will be transferred to a high level of support regarding your GPS problem on the phone.
Again, we do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. Thank you for your continued interest in Samsung products. We hope that your future dealings with Samsung are much more enjoyable.
It is our hope that you will allow us another opportunity to serve you.

I got the same message so that is their current canned response.
well I am one of the types of people that think being charged for sending text is ridiculous when i have internet on my phone
But just sending text to someones cell number, rather than email/aim/other Instant messengers that not many people use, is pretty convenient. cell providers could easily scrap the fee and send our texts via 3g internet and everything would work fine.
Has anyone here at XDA developers dug into this subject yet? I remember when i had aim people could send messages to my phone with aim and i could send messages to aim also.
I have the verizon fascinate (galaxy s). and this is my first cell phone
bump.
no one is interested in saving 10-15 dollars a month?

ya this is the type of thing i am talking about.
although what would be ideal would be to not have to have a program like that. like somehow recieve/send texts normally with your cell number but just have it go through the 3g network and not the network the carrier uses for text/pics/vids.
So you want it to be sent/received the same way as SMS, but free....
Yeah.. No. You're going to have to use Google Voice or some sort of chat program.
i would say use ping or even kik, kik is getting very popular over cross platforms. (iPone, BB etc) as long as the other ppl have kik u should be able to text, if not jus look for a app on market

A text message has to be delivered to the recipient somehow. It doesn't go directly to the intended person but rather to your carrier. Your carrier will then either route it to the recipient if on the same network or forward the message to the recipient's network who takes over delivery. Guess who wants money to use their networks in this way?
If you want to text for free then you'll have to get a Google Voice number and route your texts through that. Google is basically doing the routing for free.

do you seriously not understand what i am saying here? your paying for a 3g connection(INTERNET) that is fully capable of sending texts etc. While SIMULTANEOUSLY paying to use another form of connection to do the same job that is easily executed on the other internet connection.
the carrier could easily route text messages to use the 3g network instead of the sms/mms network. they choose not to because they can rip off people who dont realize the situation. what the hell do you think gmail is? come on guys. this isnt a hard concept to grasp.

You're vastly oversimplifying this in your head. The infrastructure to send and receive text messages is already in place and works regardless of phone model and capabilities. You can have a smartphone, feature phone, or dumb phone (that can text) and the infrastructure will handle it all the same. Adding the capability to use the data connection to tap into this infrastructure would cost lots of money for the carriers and potentially expose the SMS infrastructure to vulnerabilities.
Could the carriers do this? Certainly, but they're not going to do it out of the goodness of their hearts. Not only would they be losing texting revenue from a larger and larger portion of their base but the costs to implement any such changes would be highly unlikely to bring in any return.
The carriers aren't providing services to make you feel good. They are in it to make money and will do so in ways that you might not agree with. Texting has proven to be a very viable revenue stream and the carriers certainly don't want to endanger that by developing alternative methods to access the same service at no cost just for you.

Now, you get a couple ACCURATE responses and start name-calling because you either don't understand or don't want to accept the given answers. Talk about obnoxious.

I can't tell if you are just being a troll or are really that dim.
Google voice. I send what ever I want, just like I was using the "normal" text or sms services. I send them to the same numbers...it's transparent.
Why can't you understand? The q was answered long time ago.
fupamobile, you cannot do what you've proposed. If you want to use the SMS system, you must adhere to the current rules and regulations. You can circumvent being charged by using an instant messaging program, but you will not be able to use the actual SMS system without having to pay one way or another.
I live in Canada and we have the highest wireless rates in the world and I have unlimited messaging, 6GB of data and a very good plan which comes to about $50 a month after tax. You can't get everything in life for free. At least if you're in the United States you can use Google Voice and get free voice calling, I think even SMS but I'm not sure as it's not here. You can get very reasonable voice, data and text plans and with all the free calling and IM clients I can't see why one would also need free SMS. If it's that highly valued, simply subscribe to an SMS plan through your provider.
I personally send and receive thousands of SMS each month and could absolutely not survive without it. I use it more than voice services.
don't some plans give you free text to certain numbers? or is this a totally different topic? sorry for my confusion, cause here in aus, i get free text to people on the same carrier like i am. but if you mean free texts to everyone, then, my bad.
hahahahaha
let's start a thread that may as well ask "why do big corporations want our money?", and then argue with all the other realistic responses even though it's very clear that your dreams will never be realized because you're asking people to do something for free.
Do you not understand something about the world?
And yes, +1 for google voice essentially doing what you want.
-1 for you thinking that verizon would do the same.

if its still a problem then try force connecting your phone to a frequency different to what he is using, in the service menu. This should bypass his fake cell tower ( but it will probably limit speeds depending on what you change it to)
People I know in one household all appear to have their phones shut off, I.E. no service at all. I know that one of the other household members who does not like me has a background in hacking. I have a limited background with mobile devices or phone service. One of the household members told me that he can't make or receive calls to or from anyone, but he somehow receives calls from me. Is it possible for her to make it look like I am hacking their phones?
