[Q] MultiTasking broken after day of use (or memory leak?) - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody.
first of all i just want to mention that im really happy with the phone, especially after moving from galaxy s3 with its horrendous memory tasker and RAM.
ive noticed a problem thats been really bothering me:
after a day of use , maybe more, there seems to be a lot less memory available for the device, resulting in chrome/chrome beta reloading every time that i go back to it, even without performing any actions or loading new apps - simply moving to whatsapp for example and back to chrome - Bang! the browser reloads. I want to emphasize that this is not the normal behavior for chrome, as this does not occur after a fresh restart.
When i go to services running, there is about 800mb of ram left, but when i go to ES task manager, there is only 400mb, i dunno the cause for this difference, but i do know that despite disliking task managers very much , Pressing "Kill ALL" will restore the desired behavior for a while (no reloads).
I tried to root the phone and install Greenify , but this doesnt seem to be helping.
did anyone notice any similar behavior? thanks.

In my experience, chrome and chrome beta are huge memory hogs and refresh quite often no matter what. For that reason, I stay away from it and stick with the aosp browser. It's fast and light.

i understand what you're saying - but im referring to the data displayed by es task manager (having a lot less memory than reported) and also to the fact that after a reboot , or closing all task, the phone does have enough memory to come back to chrome without reloading it .
notice im not complaining about the memory used by chrome, also having more than 500MB of RAM left should be enough anyway no?
also - as far as i know AOSP browser is no longer supported, no?

I've also experienced this on my N5. Sometimes when switching away from chrome and then back again, even briefly, will cause the web page to refresh. This is extremely annoying especially when you're on a internet banking page which will require you to re-login.

this is exactly what im experiencing.
however, since it doesnt happen after restart or killing all apps, it is somehow memory related, but with having 800mb free, i dont really understand the issue :/

Surely the Android devs at google use internet banking, hopefully a fix arrives soon...!

I nerfed chrome as its so messed I cant even use it also drains batter like no tommarow it was always reloading for me to I went to opera it has working word wrap and way less draw on batter.

This has anyways happened to me. Since gal nexus, n4, n5, and n7. /shrug. Maybe it's a nexus thing? I thought this happened on all devices with chrome.

I've had S4 and N4 and it certainly doesn't happen, at least not from switching away from chrome and back again within a few seconds. But those devices were on Android 4.3.

It happens on galaxy s3 but that device has 1gb of memory with only 100mb or less available usually . nexus 5 even at its worst state has more than 500MB, so it def. shouldnt happen.

After side loading the 4.4.1 update (got tired of waiting for the ota) the chrome reloading seems to be fixed! I've only done brief testing but it looks promising.

[Eclipse] Clearing RAM causes TWLauncher to restart

Quite an annoying problem that only started showing itself after switching to Eclipse. When clearing RAM the phone will sometimes show a blank home page and you'll have to wait about 10-20 seconds for it to fix itself. It seems like the TouchWiz Launcher is getting closed by clearing RAM and it has to restart itself. Another app I was using had to restart TW and it did the exact same thing(blank home page for about half a minute). Pictures below.
Would really appreciate some help, can't stand it sometimes. Even if no one has a fix I would still appreciate some confirmation that this is an Eclipse bug. Thanks for taking the time guys.
When you clear ram it tells you that it may stop running processes. It is not surprising that the launcher has to reload. You should never have to clear ram, android will shut down things on its own to make room for new running apps.
yes it seems to shut down the launcher for a moment..but mine comes back in like 2 seconds tops...for em it doesnt do it all the time..like I just tried it and it went right back to the homescreen immediately
@hoppermi I understand that but sometimes the RAM almost caps, I've gotten to 300 before with no processes open(well I had Skype and other such apps running in the background). Still, this was never a problem with GC or Humble. Can't speak for stock since I stayed on it for about 8 hours but it seems like a problem with TW.
Just so you know
This even happens on the Stock on occasion. Not 100% though, but every so often.
"RAM almost capping" -- assuming you mean what I think you mean -- is perfectly normal Android behavior. That's exactly why Google so adamantly recommends against running task killers. If you do actually run out of RAM, the OS will end tasks automatically.
Haha I totally forgot about that, I always wondered why I have 260mb being used, open then close PvZ or Angry birds and I'm suddenly only using 180mb. Well thanks, guess I'm done clearing RAM for the time being. Still odd that this only happens with TW.
I think most launchers try to keep themselves in the memory...the one that came with Eclipse apparently does not.

[Q] Chrome memory management issues on N5?

Was wondering if anyone else with an N5 has had a similar experience:
My tabs in Chrome tend to reload/refresh. CONSTANTLY. If I have multiple tabs open (even only 2), swiping from one to the next almost always results in the page reloading. If I use the multitask button to to another app and then immediately back to Chrome, all of the open tabs will refresh/reload. Even pressing the home button and immediately reopening Chrome results in a refreshing of the tabs.
This is extremely annoying. Not only does it waste time, but it's killing my monthly data allotment too when I'm off WiFi. On my N7 and N4 I don't get this behavior -- I can have several tabs open without them reloading after switching apps or going to the homescreen.
Is there anyone else experiencing this? I wonder if it's related to 4.4's "improved" memory management features.
Yep I'm noticing this behavior as well. Very annoying.
Just curious, do you happen to sync chrome to a pc with the option set on the pc to reload tabs on open? Wonder if that behavior is somehow transferring over?

By "reload tabs on open," do you mean to open up a specific set of websites when I open the browser? I do have that enabled, but it's never affected any of my mobile devices (my phone and tablet does not open up to the pages like my laptop and desktop do). Even so, I have Chrome set up with the same configuration/settings on my N4 and N7, and they don't have this issue.
It's gotten bad enough for me to pop my SIM back into my N4 and use it while I'm waiting for someone to bite on my craigslist ad.
I am seeing this as well. I didn't notice until you mentioned it, because I just came from a RAM starved gnex which has to reload everything. But I am surprised because I can open like 5-10 different apps and switch between them with no reloads and then to have chrome do it for every page just seems odd.

I hate to say it but I'm considering going back to my ancient galaxy nexus at least for now. For me it's voice dialer problems, wifi, and wireless charging issues. Seems like they keep re-breaking the same stuff on every major release of Android.

[Q] android lollipop keeps killing apps

Every test build, including the final release of lollipop had plagued me with a bug where it continuously oom kills apps, including the bluetooth service, music running in the nackground, navigation while im driving, or even my keyboard while im typing. It doesnt matter if its a background process or in the foreground, it will get killed eventually without any force prompt. I've tried lowering my oom values in 3c toolbox but that hasn't done anything. Anyone else having this problem or have a solution?
Well, I know that feel bro. LOL.

I'm getting the exact same issue here. after using it for awhile (about 40 hours), i was getting launcher redraws constantly. I checked memory usage and system was hogging somewhere between 800MB to 1GB. I was reading on a reddit forum that this is due to a memory leak and that it could be a google play services issue and not a lollipop issue? I'm not a developer so really no basis for comment, but i feel you in that the phone definitely does start to get laggy. I'm really hoping google will address this, but in the meantime the fix has been to reboot.
I have the same problem. N5 is almost unusable on Lollipop. I will admit I have a lot of apps but not that many that are always running in the background.
The big annoyances are what OP said: Navigation getting cut off in the background, Music getting killed. I've noticed these two problems being more prominent when BlueTooth is turned on/connected.

Seriously, music getting killed with device like Nexus 5 is blow my mind.
Yup. Had Power Amp get killed today. Literally the first time I have EVER seen Power Amp killed. Thanks Lolliflop!
Yeah, this is extremely annoying! Have to restart the phone every 12-24h if I want some decent multitasking!
Please star this issue:

My Nexus 5 has now become unusable. I can't figure out if it's because of encryption or just shiate multitasking in Lollipop.
<rant> Screw you Google for not having developers that actually use beyond 10 standard apps on their phones in your test group. </rant>
This has nothing to do with encryption .. I don't use this this feature.

Anyone else having problem with the 'Path' app?

The Path app is practically useless for me on the A9. Loading it the first time takes almost one minute, and then it updates the latest 'moments' for another minute until the page finally done loading (if I'm lucky). Sometimes it never completely loads and just stays there on what seems like forever in the loading/spinning wheel mode. If the home page loads, scrolling down is super slow, loading each image takes a very long time.
I have tried clearing app cache/data and even uninstalling/reinstalling the app, and always the same result. Totally scratching my head here since the app runs smoothly on my M7 and even my almost 3-year old Samsung tablet. I thought maybe it's a Marshmallow compatibility problem but a friend with Marshmallow on a Nexus said he doesn't experience any problem.
I thought I'd post an update:
As I said in the OP, I found that the Path app was unusable. In the following days I also discovered one other app that acted almost exactly the same, Facebook Messenger. Just like Path, I tried uninstalling/reinstalling and clearing cache/data and obviously rebooted, but nothing worked. Luckily I don't regularly use any of these two apps so I simply uninstalled them without much thought and moved on.
Last night I received the 6.0.1 update, and right afterwards I thought I'd install the two apps again and check if there's any change, and what do you know, they're both fixed! No more slowness, lags, or any crash whatsoever. These apps are now functioning normally and as snappy as they should be.
So my monologue continues...
The slowness with Path comes back. It is not as completely useless as it was prior to 6.0.1, but it is still crazy slow to the point of ridiculousness. The slowness in Facebook Messenger app, as I mentioned above, did not come back, and the Messenger app is now normally snappy and completely usable, as it should.
Is there really nobody here using Path and can confirm the experience? This is the only app this phone is having trouble with, and the app does not show similar problem on any other phones, even much older phones. I have submitted this problem to Path, although I'm not sure if they will ever respond.

[Completed] Prevent automatic web refreshing after root and RAM expansion LG Tribute 5

Hello. I'm absolutely new here but I've done as much digging as I can and can't seem to find an answer for my problem so I decided to ask someone.
I recently bought a LG LS675 Boost Mobile Tribute 5 to replace my Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini that started acting wonky. For the first time ever I rooted a phone (I'm proud of myself even though the developers did all the work writing the program, thank you) and got rid of some useless stock apps. Yay. OK, so that freed up some space and got rid of notifications for useless apps.
I had read that automatic web page reloading has to do with the phone's RAM being too little so I bought Roehsoft RAM Expander and bumped it up to 4GB. While I know it doesn't increase your true RAM I thought it would have helped some because of what the post said but it hasn't helped at all. Then I read that if you overclock your CPU you can improve the entire experience of everything but I can't locate any kernels and recovery ROMs for this specific device, and the thread was VERY CLEAR that it MUST be device specific or you'll end up with a paper weight. So, I'd like to know what I can do (if anything) to prevent this. It's quite annoying to have your page reload after your screen times out or after you answer a text message, or swap to another tab, or do anything really. It's really annoying when you're reading a long article and it refreshes because the screen went to sleep and then you have to wait for it to reload and then scroll down to find where you left off. But probably the worst is when I want to go to another site and it forces me to wait for what I was looking at to reload before it will process my request to go to another site. And it isn't like it reloads in a few seconds it sometimes takes a full minute or the screen will time out (because I like trying to multi-task) and didn't notice the 30 second mark had passed and have to wait for it to start the process all over again. I've increased the RAM and close out apps I know I won't be using again for a while. I've tried OperaMini, Firefox (my main browser), Chrome, Dolphin, Puffin, and they all do it. They all reload the page/tab if I leave it for one second or my phone times out.
Should I ditch this phone and get something else? My Galaxy didn't have this problem but it was doing other weird annoying stuff which is why I stopped using it. Should I just suck it up? Is there a developing/settings option someone can guide me though to quit this automatic reloading or another awesome web browser? I believe my Galaxy was/is superior to this phone in every way really, but for now this is the phone I have so what can I do? I really appreciate your help! Thank you.
