[Q] When can new roms be used?

I am a jailbroken iPhone convert. I am loving this phone so far and have heeded the warnings to not mess with the phone too much. My question is, when is it safe to use the roms that are available? Is there that big of a difference in performance? I jailbroke my iPhone to get features Apple wouldn't allow our have. what do I gain with custom roms? Thanks for all that has been done so far and look forward to what its to come.

I don't know of there is a time period to use them but most custom roms freshen up your desktop icons as well most of them improve battery life and add the ability to overclock.

You can gain quite a few features with Custom Roms. Such as overclocking, custom ui's, much better performance (snappier). I highly recommend flashing a custom ROM. Currently CM9 and CM7 are a work in progress and should be released sooner than later, (CM7 is currently in it's testing stage). Also to do all of this you have to root your device. Thanks for the help so far. The only question still remaining for me is; at what point are these roms considered stable enough for someone new to start using. I have read the warnings and really don't want to have to reinstall everything over and over again because of instability issues. thanks

It really all depends on what you are after.
I will say that even the stock ROM on the Atrix 2 is not that stable, and there are a TON of bugs in it.
All the ROMs that are here are in a beta format and are not even at a 1.0 revision yet. If you are not technical at all, and don't really like playing with your device a lot, and flashing ROMs, to try and get a feature that the stock ROM is missing, then I totally advise against flashing anything. These "ROMS are completely safe and stable enough", but both lfaber06 and are I always trying to "improve" on them, no matter what revision that the ROM is at, as well as requests for new features. That really is why it may seem that people are flashing all the time, not really because of instability.
Since he and I are really the only two devs in here right now, there is not going to be a lot of choice in ROMs and since this phone is still fairly new, everything is still "new" and in beta/alpha. Since you are coming from the iphone, and flashing ROMs is not really something that you do, I say you wait until you find something you really want that is not available in the stock ROM, and has been put into one the ROMs available here, then try flashing that. Until then just hang tight for a while. There are plenty of hacks that can be done to the stock ROM, to fix things, and make that better at this time. Also take some time to learn a little about android and flashing and how it all works, not intimately, or on a very technical level, but that might save your "you know what", if you have an issue during a flash or while running an unfamiliar ROM.

Thank you VERY much. That was the answer I was looking for. I am technical savy, just haven't done much with android so far. I am one that likes to tinker and get the most out of any of my electronics.

CleanRom 2.3 or CM10 nigthly? can't decide.

I would like to know which one performs best or if its based on preference. I know the developers have made an outstanding job making these roms but I can't decide on wich one. Comments and opinions are highly appreciated!

Here is my short opinion:
Performance=about the same
Stable=Cleanrom(zero bug for me), CM10=buggy.
Features=CM10 (more bells and whistles
So if you just want a stable fast rom then use Cleanrom with Clemsy Kernel and data2sd...you're flying.
If you want to play with feature sets (looking for cool things) then go with CM10

Like vol button control camera zoom in/out...Currently, not much, since there are many bugs, but the goal for CM10 here is (once all the bugs are done), to have all the bells and whistles (like stuff on note2 may be implement here). For Cleanrom the OP would like to stick to STOCK as much as possible.

I had Baked Bean a long time and decided to try CleanRom 2.3 and did so by first updating my hboot via the official jb. Changed kernel to Clemsyn's build 22 and boy my tab is flying! Turned Forced GPU rendering on too and its blazing performance wise. Baked beans got more customizing for you. Bit I'll stick with this setup for a while.

OK, here is a question. Is there a difference between stock and non-stock roms in how the device deals with the keyboard dock?
Also, non-stock will be missing the ASUS customized settings, correct? So what does that mean for the screen saver, dock-unlock, system performance settings, touchpad options, etc?

Right, because it is based on stock. I was more asking about non-stock such as CM, AOSP or AOKP.

To answer your question:
1. Yes, in that the CM/AOSP/AOKP ROMs do not properly support most keyboard shortcut keys, and some of them do funky things with the volume keys on the tablet as well.
2. Non-stock ROMs: No screen saver; dock unlock works fine, but see point 1 above. System performance settings: some work more or less okay, others do not. CPU scaling seems unreliable. Brightness settings varies as well: some report the highest brightness available being Super IPS+, others say the highest brightness is significantly less bright than that. I have no other light meters available than those that Nature gave me (meh ), so I wouldn't be able to definitively tell you. The touchpad cannot be disabled on non-stock ROMs (which is THE most important dealbreaker for me). Sound sometimes is funky as well.
I'm very happy with CleanROM (except for those dodgy notifications).

I do not believe in benchmarking (far too artificial), so I do not have hard numbers for you. On stock JB, I still saw I/O issues, even when transferring relatively small files. I transferred over 6 GB of files yesterday (e-books, specifically, lots of 'em) and it was fast -- the pauses have been reduced to very, very minor instances on CleanROM 2.3.
Fluidity... Very subjective. I was blown away by the smoothness of CleanROM 2.2, and told Scott I did not believe he could further improve on that. He just smiled. He did it again with 2.3 -- he has made some incredible strides. I haven't tried the latest and greatest ASUS stock JB ROM, however -- it might have improved on fluidity significantly. The only way to tell is to test it yourself.
My expectation, based on experience with the stock ROMs: they're built more for reliability than for speed or fluidity (relatively speaking), so I'm not even considering letting CleanROM go.

NO! WRONG WRONG WRONG!
You're not actually wrong at all about the upgrade/rom sequence you should flash but I wanted to make sure I had your attention. I don't know how much you've scoured the forums, but for the love of god use NVFlash before you install any updates, linked here:

This essentially makes a device-specific backup that can be restored no matter what you do to the device software-wise. As the thread points out, it is an absolute failsafe against any and all softbricks.
This process is incompatible with the bootloader packaged with stock JB, so it's essential that you use NVFlash first. You can use the backup you'll create with the new bootloader once you do upgrade, but you won't be able to make one in the first place if you OTA first. If you don't do this before JB and something goes awry with flashing, you're totally out of luck. Especially with the warranty you're giving up.
In summary you'll want to go:
NVFlash -> Stock JB -> CleanRom
Sorry for the drama I neglected to do this before JB, and I'm still kicking myself. I also realize there's a solid chance you know all of this already and are rolling your eyes at the three-post junior member right now. I figure the risk of sounding condescending is worth it if I could save someone else the hassle.

No apologies necessary the risk WAS worth it! I had only started scouting the TF700 forum and did not realize I would have ended up screwing myself just like I had with my HOXL. Thanks for the heads up!

[Q] Why we don't have more custom roms for our p6200/6210 device's?

I am sorry if this is stupid noob question, but why we don't have many custom roms since that our device's sharing same exynos 4210 hardware, like Samsung galaxy SII?
I own SII for myself and there is every day something new in development thread, and here nothing
My P 6200 is crying for fix WiFi problem and some great custom rom :crying:

I have been using Android since it was released and have collected various devices. This is just me, there is nothing better than stock rooted and tweaked rom. Just debloat the rom and you will be ok. My P6210 is amazingly fast with NO error or any single issues. I got both apple and Samsung products and my P3113 and my P6210 are my main tab. It is a must for me to go stock rooted and tweaked. Just me.

I always asked myself the ssame question too... but it turns out we dont hhave so many devs here and this device wasn't a hit like the S series from samsung. Making custom roms isn't so hard but it needs alot of learning if ur a biggener. I tried making custom roms myself but what else do u need from a custom rom if you already have CM9, cm10, paranoid android and soon to be AOKP? But who knows we might see new stuff I mean I bought this tab before there was even a functional cm9 build and I was thinking of selling it. But it pulled through aand I must say his device is rock solid we just need to nail the wifi issue.

I don't have any problems with speed and stability on stock 4.0.4 but wifi issue is bothering me so much I try almost everything, now I m on cm10 and problem is still here...

I had wifi problems as well on stock ics (UK version).
It all disappeared when I flashed the US version, give it a try...
This said, cm, aokp and stuff are nice but not stable enough for my taste yet, I don't like bugs (I am not a very patient character) and for me so far there's nothing like a good home tweaked, rooted and deodexed stock ics rom.
When cm10 is completely stable then I will eagerly flash it, I check xda every day waiting for that day to come

I have actually did a lot of things with the ICS stock rooted but never have wifi issues. Anywhere I go with wifi access, I never have problems or any issues. Would it be router related? With my P3113, its fine but with my YP-G70, there was. I have to install another stock rom to solve it. Otherwise, everything works fine with me. These products are actually very nice IMHO. I'm just waiting for the JB update for my P6210 and P3113, if there will be.

Early in ANdroid the stock ROMs were often terrible and there was a lot of room to make easy improvements. Now the stock ROMs are really quite good and there is not much that can be improved on easily. IF you like a different style you have the CM based ROMs with some UI differences but not much in the way of performance improvements and you lose stability and some hardware features like IR Remote. Even with the Nexus, by the time some individual developer takes the time to customize a ROM, Google has new features out in the stock ROM so its just not worth it to build from scratch.
SO called debloating is mostly a placebo because the new devices like this tab have lots of memory and apps you don;t use aren't doing anything or taking resources.
Curious to know if you have found anything unique and useful in SII development. TO me it seems like all retreads of repackaged stock or CM based stuff with a few different apps from samsung or sony thrown in for good measure.

Stock rom is full with unneeded application.
Custom rom bring more speed and space.
I'm currently running custom rom based on JB leak on my Samsung SII, which is full with super functions from S3 and Note 2. Above all that rom is great for daily use For me that is enough

Bought my 10 year old this tablet last year for Xmas and it's laggy as all get out IMO. Love my android phones and will never switch, but I also love by iPad /gasp!
I am wondering if unlocking and rom'ing this thing will really make enough difference.
I have rooted and rom'ed every phone I have ever had, but I also use them daily so I get to play around with roms and figure out whats stable and works really well. I am also a little nervous about this thing, so many instructions and various ways to do things depending on which update your on.
The tab is 4.2.1 10.6.1.24.5
Any opinions on this and/or suggestions on what roms to try out if I go for it?

Unlocking and flashing custom ROMs is a major improvement over stock. If you want stability and performance, CROMi. If you want performance and cutting edge, CM or another KK ROM.
Just be careful about what to flash and always ask questions is there is any doubt.

You can always reflash the stock ROM to go back to stock, but only if you haven't bricked your tablet.

Made a backup of the stock unrooted rom, then rooted and backed up the apps. Loaded up Cromi and all is working well. So far I cant say it's that much of an improvement, with the exception of browsing. Flash will be nice too.
Should I feel like its a huge improvement? Maybe I needed to pick a different kernel.

Hi All,
I just had a very general question. I am wondering since the release of Marshmallow on some other devices, does anyone have any plans on making a release for the TF700?
I am only asking out of curiosity as I am perfectly happy playing around with all the great roms here. Currently using Zombie-pop.

I am in no way a developer, but I can say that from my interactions on this site, the answer is probably a no. There are just too many new options out there with better hardware to customize. Although, all it takes is a small group of talented individuals to love this device enough to port or make a new ROM! Which I am sure all current tf700 users would be totally psyched for.

I think the days of chasing the latest and greatest are over for this tablet.

Focus for the devs is elsewhere by now which is understandable. I think they tickled the best performance possible out of this hardware quite a while ago..
For people who still love this tablet (and I do) and plan to use until it dies a natural death it is time to settle on your favorite rom, set it up to your liking and maintain it.
For me that is CROMi-X. Yep, not very sexy since the last version is JB, but heck - it works very very well.
I am currently working with @LetMeKnow to incorporate his latest tweaks into CROMi-X 5.4, keep your eyes peeled if you're interested, we'll start a new thread once it is done

Better than Zombi-Pop? It's pretty buttery. Not perfect, but faster than Crombi-KK. Hmm. I may have to think about flashing it once/if I tire from Zombi-Pop.

Going back I just realized: I really liked the JB Asus UI! And some of the tweaks we lost with KK and LP. Like remapping the power button to forward delete, Keyboard manager which lets you assign different keyboards for landscape, portrait, hardware kb, the choice to go back to the 4.1 UI with the home buttons on the left...
It could be just nostalgia... After all it's that time of the year where you look back and reflect, don't ya? :angel:

Im not sure why some of the above people posted that this tablet has reached its limit. I just downloaded the KatKiss 5.1.1. Not Marshmellow but has built in SPLIT SCREEN! That is the magic for me to use this tablet as a front like productivity device for my job.

As much as I loved the Crombi line and still revere Josh and SDbags for their work, I jumped the shark and switched to this ROM.
I benchmark well on this and my I/O memory hasnt missed a beat...

I thought they were designing newer versions of Android to run on devices with less hardware requirements? To help minimize the "fragmentation" of the os and hopefully bring manufacturers to update the devices faster etc. I'm aware our device is hindered unless Nvidia updates the Tegra3 drivers. Someone will probably find a way to port it over. May not be a top priority of developers but as a hobby, the challenge may be taken up.
