Introducing MotoWpNoMo. The purpose of this application is to disable the pesky write protection on BL-locked motorola devices. After successfully running this application, you will no longer need to boot recovery or use other methods to temporarily remove write protection. This exploit is permanent in the sense it will survive factory resets, reflashing the device, etc. However, like with any exploit, you should not expect it to survive OTA's or other updates. This application will work with many motorola devices, however I'm only posting it here to keep the files and feedback consolidated (plus, I'm lazy). THIS IS NOT A BOOTLOADER UNLOCK, IT ONLY REMOVES WRITE PROTECTION. Let's get started....
Credits and terms:
beaups and fuses for MotoWpNomo application. jcase for root and gunnyman and brianr134 for testing. MotoWpNomo MAY NOT BE REHOSTED, REPACKAGED, INTEGRATED INTO A ONE-CLICK, BAT, SHELL SCRIPT, OR ANY OTHER APPLICATION. THE ONLY PLACE TO ACQUIRE THIS APPLICATION SHALL BE RIGHT HERE, IN THIS THREAD. THIS IS NOT OPEN SOURCE, DON'T ASK!
Pre-requisites:
1.) Working root (su). Jcase's methods are fully supported here
2.) Working adb and fastboot drivers. Yes, that means WORKING. Don't clutter this thread with driver issues
3.) Linux (32 bit) or windows
4.) Disable all firewalls/internet security/antivirus before running. This is the #1 issue encountered when running the application
Instructions:
Linux (preferred):
1.) download the application: motowpnomo
2.) extract the archive: tar -xf [filename]
3.) run the application: sudo ./wpbegone
4.) follow the on-screen prompts
Windows:
1.) download the application: motowpnomo
2.) extract the archive
3.) run wpbegone.exe as administrator
4.) follow the on-screen prompts
After the application is complete, you can verify with:
adb shell getprop ro.boot.write_protect
If you see "0", that pesky write protection is gone
Donations are appreciated and can be made to (paypal): [email protected]
support is available in #MotoWpNoMo on the freenode and andirc networks.
Wow... Sounds great.
So... What part of the phone is changed? How do you revert to stock?
Thanks!

2.) you don't
It works! Thanks Beaups
Nice. Will try when I get home

If you are running this on a Mac in a VM, each time the phone reboots and the program is waiting for adb, unplug the phone and plug it back in once the phone is started up again or else the process will fail.
Sounds great but is there no way to get back to write-protected other then OTA? Will flashing the FXZ restore it?

in what case would you want write-protection back? also, no, flashing FXZ will not restore it.

ok ill let u know via pm, im trying something else right now if that works i should be able to tell you in a couple hours. and i was wondering if stock recovery could be re-flashed to re-enable a standard factory reset not to remove mod. so that should work right?

Do you thing this would work on the Droid RAZR?
After running it said no su fu after rebooting su binaries weren't up to date and su couldnt fix. Ran adb and got the 0 so it worked then had to run a couple commands from the root thread and all is well again.
Ran into an issue and jumped in your IRC. Hopefully someone is around to help.

Any idea what would cause it to not work? If there's a way for me to pull a log of what failed specifically, I could probably be of more help.

Hi,
I was wondering if there was any way to get a password from the standard android browser as i have forgotten what the password is but it is still remembered by the phone. Are there any plugins I can get or anything like that? And root apps that might do it for me?
Thanks in advance

I don't understand in the thread - what do I have to do?
1, You must be rooted.
2, Install SQLite Editor from Play Store
3, Open app, wait until all apps are listed
4, Tap Internet -> webview.db -> password
5, All your passwords stored in default web browser should be listed there
I just tested it on my Desire S, and found my stored facebook password
Thanks, what is the easiest way to root my htc desire s? S-on 2.3.5 and latest hboot i think
If you are not rooted yet, it's irrelevant to root now, because you will loose all your data during downgrade and rooting.
Check my signature btw, i was also downgrading from latest RUU, S-ON, LOCKED, same as you.
But you have no reason to do it now, because as i said, you will loose your data.
Maybe temprooting and then installing the mentioned app would work.
But im not sure.
It's worth try in my oppinion. By temprooting you will not loose anything. After rebooting the phone, it will be in it's previous state, untouched...
As i said, check link in my sig.
The 1st step, but don't push misc_version, you don't need to when you are not going to downgrade.. Push just zergrush, or tacoroot, depending on your SW version.
Better wait for someone more experienced, as im still prety new here, and don't want to make brick of your phone.
Thanks - but I think I have found a guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390496 What do you think to this?
Big No No, from me.
Someone in that thread commented and said, that you have first to unlock your phone via htc-dev unlock. Unlock the phone officialy via htc site and according to their manual steps.
What does it mean to you ? You have to put your IMEI on the website, so they're absolutely sure, that you have been trying something with your phone and you loose your warranty. There's no step back.
Temprooting on the otherside, as the title say is temporary. After reboot, it's gone. In my oppinion - ideal for you. But i don't have unrooted desire s to test if SQLite will work.
---------- Post added at 07:16 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:10 AM ----------
Alternatively you can try this. Also picked from mentioned thread.
No rooting or anything. Just don't forget to turn USB debugging on.
1,Setup AndroidToolsSDK on your PC

I thought that you mean this as "fully rooted".
Since not just flash custom recovery and then use SuperOneClick to push Su and Superuser app, or search for a flashable zip. This will give you root.

Because with the stock you will not be able to flash the su binary. Custom recovery has root access by default, contrary to your current one and the OS itself.
You can use zergrush from the guide you posted above but this approach involves more manual steps. Anyway each if the mentioned ways will give you the same result it is up to you to decide what will be easier to do for yourself
Btw Superoneclick automates zergrush and the su flashing so search for it. I think this is the most straightforward method

Yes, sorry for the messy explanation but there are a really lot of ways to root your phone.
If you use the Superoneclick you will permanently root your device with one button click. This is an application for Windows, just search xda for it
Edit: you bootloader should be unlocked to do this, so I hope you did not relocked it

hey everyone. i just grabbed a bnib one s off of craigslist that has been locked to a different carrier then i use. when i paid a website for the unlock code from the imei they said they couldnt do it and refunded my money. when i asked why they said the code hadnt been posted by the manufacturer and that i should wait a few weeks. when i googled this i found something that said manufacturers dont usually produce unlock codes until phones have been on the market for 3 weeks.
seeing as how the one s has been out for months, could this mean the actual phone needs to have been released for over 3 weeks?
big thanks to ferraripassion at www.htccode.com, he was able to get my unlock code when 3 other websites failed. the code was also emailed to me almost immediately. hes much faster, and has much better service then the other websites i tried. if anyone ever needs unlock codes, or is having trouble finding theirs either pm him, or visit his website. his site also has an imei checker so you can verify he has your code before you bother paying and dealing with refunds like the other sites.

Have you taken a look at the thread SIM Unlock for FREE
yes ive read that. my problem with that is:
i recently bought a bnib one s that was unlocked, it worked fine for a few weeks then got stuck in a bootloop without being modified or rooted. i could not enter the recovery and factory reset didnt work. i unlocked the bootloader and attempted to install an aftermarket recovery and it also wouldnt load. installing a ruu also wouldnt fix the problem. when i tried to get it warrantied htc wouldnt cover it because i unlocked the bootloader.
now that ive bought my 2nd one s, im going to use it for a month or 2 before i bother unlocking the bootloader. hopefully a 1 or 2 month grace period will be enough to weed out any potential defects.
i tried another unlocking site htcsimunlock.com, they also couldnt find the code, however they have access to htcs company database and said they have a 99 percent change of unlocking it for an extra 15 bucks. im gonna give them a try.

Oh yeah, you can root the phone without unlocking the bootloader using this tool.
https://dl.dropbox.com/s/koi38l3uve546rs/Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v17.zip?dl=1
Turn on USB debugging on your phone and run the script on your computer.
Press 1 for normal
Then on your phone press "restore my phone"
Then wait for it to finish.
After that use the unlocking guide.
That will keep your warranty intact since HTC will have no trace of your phone on their servers.
thats awesome! when was that released? i was hoping thered be a way to get around unlocking the bootloader.
is it possible to load custom roms or change cid with that or do you still need to unlock the bootloader for that?
deep search couldnt find my unlock code either, looks like ill try your method.

It came out sometime in September it just no one really knows about it around here (One S forums). I think you can change CID without unlocking the bootloader but I'm not sure. I know how to unlock the bootloader without using HTC dev also but I need to test a little more.
for some reason the rooting program isnt working. ive tried running it from cmd with admin rights, click 1, click restore my data on phone, it restarts for a few min script says its complete then it restarts and i dont have root. ive tried it 3 times now i dont know if im doing something wrong or what?
phone is in debug mode with allow 3rd party apps.
i also just noticed there is an error report ready on the phone. any ideas?

Strange I tried it today myself. I actually ran a RUU then the first thing I did was try it and it worked just fine. It added the app Super SU to my phone. That's root. Then right after I did it i checkd in adb shell and it dropped down to root no problem. My bootloader was still locked too.

From what I understand the way you get root is the script exploits a timed event in the adb backup/restore process. So maybe try it a couple times.

My script looked exactly like that. The phone rebooted twice and it was done. If your used to seeing the "Super User" app and your looking for that it won't be there this uses the "Super SU" app. They do the same thing.

i wouldnt say im exactly competent but i know a bit lol. ive flashed different roms on my tf101 i bought used that was already unlocked, and i am a bit familiar with looking threw scripts and running commands from using linux but ive never actually rooted a phone. but yeah this seems like a fairly basic process, i doubt there is much i could be doing wrong here.
super su is not installed, and has not installed in any of the attempts that i have noticed.
my phone is locked on fido in canada. maybe this has something to do with it?
do you remember if your phone popped up with the htc error report when it was all done? maybe there is some kind of programming from fido interfering with the script and causing the phone to reboot?
also when the phone reboots the first time and it tries to copy everything. mine doesnt completely load the home screen. my background loads but there are no apps on the screen and the launcher bar at the bottom is missing. i can however pull down the top menu and load into settings.
on a side note, have you seen this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1913729 any idea if it would work with the one s?
i appreciate your help. theres probably not much you can help with but its nice to get some input from someone who knows more about this stuff. i posted on the forum page listing my problem so hopefully the developer of the script can figure something out.
hey l3ft3r1s were those errors posted in the script window or is there a log file that is exported somewhere? mine doesnt report any errors in the script window.

Script window.
As i see you get the "Backup-Restore.apk' does not exist" also, but this shouldn't be the problem, if you get the "Restore" prompt on the phone.

Actually, there other one s users too on the original thread with the same problem ("mount: permission denied").
You re only the second to report it works :/
And Bin4ry said that if you get this message, the exploit won't work.
Here is my log:
Do you have those 2 files missing or did you get the same error?

Interesting I used the RUU_Ville_U_H3G_UK_1.53.771.4_Radio_0.15.31501S.19_2_10.13.31501S.06L_release_251870_signed
That won't be an option for anyone that hasn't downgraded their hboot though. I thought I was pretty sure that I had all this wrapped up and just needed to write instructions.
Do you guys have the HTC drivers installed? I'm sure I'll be able to figure it all out it just might take another day or two.

my phone is locked on fido in canada. maybe this has something to do with it?

Your carrier wouldn't matter. But it sounds like it created a problem with your stock ROM did I read that right? Also, it's my experience that the error report only shows up if you have the "security warning" flag in hboot and you are using a stock rom.
We can't depend on the Sprint HTC phone stuff that much. They have a SD card slot and we don't if you'd like to look else where then you want to look at the ATT HTC One X stuff. They use a modified version of the root exploit for their phone. I'm guessing that it worked for me becuase I had a lower hboot. I didn't think that would be an issue but it just might. I was going to test it tomorrow since if something goes wrong I know how to fix it. So you might want to hold off. But if you'd like I'll post the link.
If you guys move forward then you might get stuck having to unlock via HTC dev to restore. Which kinda defeats the point of trying all this. You might want to hold off another day or two.
yeah i have the drivers installed.
i dont really have an option at the moment, im not gonna unlock the bootloader just yet so ill go without . if you can figure it out thatd be wicked. i have a link to my ruu if you want to try it...

I think so. How do I confirm this? Either way I don't think this should be the problem, since I get a return to adb devices.
By the way, do all RUUs need downgraded hboot?

Easiest way is to just hit the button in the all in one toolkit. Not all RUU's need to downgrade the hboot. You can use an RUU that has a higher hboot (as long as your CID is compatable). So you can always use a RUU to upgrade but not to downgrade.

Hi,
I just got the HP Slate 21 and naturally I'm looking for a way to root it
I found a way to unlock it (I wrote a post about it here)
But anything else that I tried to root it - failed.
I tried the TN7 and the shield way (with the fastboot boot img) - the slate immediately reboots to android and ignores the image. I tried SRSroot - not working at all.
It seems that HP is back-porting security patches from 4.3 and 4.4 back to their Android 4.2.2, so no matter what I do to root, it simply fails.
Any suggestion how can I root it? (it's based on Tegra 4).

Hi... I also wanted to know.
But I gave the slate to a family member and it isn't mine anymore.
I also experiment to get root access.
I can succesfully get ADB access to the device.
I read your blog. The only thing i didn't do is that i didn't use the command "fastboot oem unlock"
I didn't heard before of this option to unlock your device... and i'm still learning more and understanding about android devices how they exactly work and how it is secured the recovery image and how it is stored blablablablabla
I used the software in this forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2092349
But didn't unlock the bootloader.
If I did. Maybe than with that chinees software from http://www.shuame.com/ you can succesfully root the slate?
Or am I totally wrong here?
I'm unable to test anymore because as I wrote, I don't have the slate 21 anymore.
Also I want to know where you can download the official ROM builds? They aren't @ HP support site.

The Slate 7 is based on Android 4.1.x and it's using a different chipset. The Slate-21 is using Tegra-4.
Also, it seems that HP rewrote the bootloader.
Last - this is HP, do you really think that they'll give any option to download the original ROM?

If you can unlock the bootloader it isn, t so hard anymore to unlock this HP slate 21 as i understand.
Just mount system map en change ro.secure ??

Unfortunately, the part with the fastboot command simply ignores the boot image and it doesn't upload it so it's just rebooting to the standard android desktop. Did you upgrade your firmware since the time you purchased it? Which version of firmware do you have?

Hi Guys,
i have the same situation: i want to modify the official rom downloaded from the HP Support site.
The rom i downloaded is like a normal rom, i can install it from the bootloader, but as soon as i modify it and resign it with a test key i can not install it
my aim is simple, i want to remove some apps and add my homescreen app, and use this device in my company as a full screen browser/html display
where do you suggest to start? unlocking it is enough, and than i can install my signed rom? (BTW the link suggested is broken...)
or find a way to root it?
thanks in advance
Thanks xdaca for the info.
In order to use the method xdaca mentioned in his reply, you'll need the restore image. You can download it here:

Code:
fastboot flash:raw boot zImage insecure_initramfs.cpio.gz
---------- Post added at 04:02 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:53 PM ----------
Also worth mentioning is that after editing default.prop you can better immediately skip to the section 'It didn't work?!' and follow instructions there.
Then after packing the root filesystem, you can skip compiling the boot image because the above mentioned fastboot command will do that for you before flashing it.
so basically mkbootimg is not needed, right?

Oh, and installing Superuser didn't work well for me. I installed SuperSU instead using the same method.
Well,
I just tried...
I have a root now, but the ID is weird one:
uid=0(root) gid=0(root) groups=1003(graphics),1004(input),1007(log),1009(mount),1011(adb),1015(sdcard_rw),1028(sdcard_r),3001(net_bt_admin),3002(net_bt),3003(inet),3006(net_bw_stats)

Worse, I tried to install SuperSu from the Play store, installation works but then it says it needs an update and the update fails, so while I can get su on adb shell, none of the apps that requires root work

# ls -l /system/bin/su
-rwsr-sr-x root root 380532 2014-01-21 23:54 su
ls -l /system/xbin/su

Yes, I had the same issue with SuperUser's su binary. That's why I said it didn't work out for me.
You are nearly there
Here is what you can do:
Go to chainfire's site and download UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.89.zip
Extract arm/su from it.
Now replace /system/bin/su on the slate with this binary and make sure it has the right permissions (chown/chgrp/chmod like before if needed)
Remove /system/app/SuperUser.apk
Reboot and rerun SuperSU.
Enjoy full control over your slate.

Yeah, I managed to run it but somehow when I did su - my adb stuck. reboot seems to solve the issue
This thing should be scripted. I don't mind writing a shell script to do that (with credits to you, of course). Anyone here want to write something in Batch for the Windows users?

I just learned the hard way that the hp recovery sucks beyond belief. Even the Xposed Disabler can not be used with it. I think I am going the matrix way (whiteboard.ping.se/Android/Debian) as that will double as an alternative recovery.

Oh snap! Ok sending donation as soon as I get on my laptop!
Has anyone yet provided a step by step video by chance? I know nothing about adb stuff as I've never had to use it so reading the firewater instructions I'm a little lost :/. How would I install twrp and after I do install does it then install full root then can delete weak sauce?

It looks like we have R/W access without doing this after firewater. I've added/removed stuff from /system without any issues(apps, priv-apps, stuff from the media resources, etc)
edit: I've done probably 20 reboots with no issues along the way of modding stuff and still everything is fine.

You do not need this kernel mod after you have S-off'ed and perm rooted.
I have personally tested this. All system changes survived hard reboot (via adb reboot)

Hi everyone,
I am new to android mods. I just bought a used vzw M8 running 4.4.4. I unlocked and got S off using sunshine. Rooted with WS2, and verified. Installed SuperSU. Stock otherwise. I have installed the SDK on my laptop. I can't get any devices to show up when i use the adb devices command.
I am trying to figure out how to disable the OTA for Lollipop. Does anyone know if the OTA will re-lock or bypass my root? Can you help me disable if it is an issue?
Eventually, I'd like to go to a different (cleaned up) ROM and 5.X, but i need to make sure the evil red monster doesn't mess up my work first. I have spent several hours searching the forums, and have made some progress. If there are any detailed posts to point me to, I'd appreciate any and all help.
Thank you,
Dustin
Did you install the HTC drivers? If not install HTC sync manager (I think that's the name) and it'll install them for u then u can uninstall HTC sync manager and you should get adb to recognize your device. Ota will not relock your device. It will take off root tho. But you can just flash custom recovery and flash su in there. I'd suggest since your s off to flash dottats s off 5.0.1 ruu over in the development section once you get adb working. It is also pre rooted and will get up and running on lollipop.

Check this thread out for blocking the OTA http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-one-m8/help/block-ota-updates-t2871520 It is also my understanding that just being rooted will cause the OTA to fail. I may be wrong about that, however.

To use adb/htc_fastboot with the copy i have on the thread you were already linked all you need to do is unzip the file. You don't install adb/htc_fastboot... You just unzip and use. So long as your drivers are installed correctly.

Thank you, dottat. I have installed and re-installed the driver. My computer can see my phone, and pull it up as a disk drive. I can open the SDK and ADB. In the CMD window, when I type "adb devices", it starts the daemon successfully. Then, under list of devices, it is blank. Any ideas? Could i have downloaded the wrong SDK/ADB package and need to get yours? I'm really green with this software and Linux in general, so I may be missing something. I'm hoping I can get comms worked out and load your RUU file soon. Can I go ahead and take the 5.0 OTA without worry? I have root, s off, and BL unlock. SuperSU fails to update.
THANK YOU!!!
Do you have Android Debugging checked under developer settings?

Thanks! Looks like a lot of work...it's because Verizon locked things down? So am I right in saying I need to use Sunshine to get S-Off then do that Bootloader Unlock? Or do I need to unlock the bootloader?

What Android version you running?
On 4.4.3 and over sunshine will s off and unlock bootloader together, but its a 50/50 chance. I personally used firewater and weaksauce but I was on 4.4.2 when I did it but VZW closed that exploit in 4.4.3.
