This should have gone in another forum by original plan but apparently I don't have permission to post there... I don't know why but I'll post here instead
Hello everyone
My first post on XDA, so let's cut to the chase...
I love ARHD and after trying most other options I've decided to stick with it... The only problem I ever had with it (and most other ROMs) was battery life, ranging from 5 hours minimum with just browsing and maybe a little navigation, which I found very unsatisfying...
I've been having quite some trouble finding out what the problem was, as I'm new to the android os and smartphones in general and googling always gets me to 100s of different problems and solutions most of which don't apply to me...
But there are some general things that I've learned...
I only recently found out about the "deep sleep" state, and began checking if my device is even capable of going into that... I discovered that it is and it should, but it doesn't...
How to find that out for yourself?
Go into your battery usage screen: Settings - About Phone - Battery - Battery Use and once there, click on the graph at the top and check your "AWAKE" bar... If it's full, continuous, uninterrupted, like mine was, that means that your phone never actually goes into sleep mode... And that is a big difference... As before I learned that, I would charge my phone to 100 percent before going to sleep and 6-8 hours later, I'd find it at 50-60 percent left... I would let the Wi-Fi on, but that was no excuse in my book...even if I turned it off I saw no improvement...
Well, to make a long story a slightly less longer, the culprit was an option I'd never have suspected and that would never cross my mind...
I had my time automatically configured by my network...
Settings - Date and Time - Automatic
As soon as I turned that off, my phone was able to go to sleep and my battery life TRIPLED... Now I'm at the 24 hour mark, with my regular usage...texting, surfing, downloading, watching movies and music when I'm out...
I don't know if this was already posted, it might also depend on your carrier but I found that on some lonely post in some forum nowhere near XDA...
I hope this is useful to someone, I'll be writing a full post on everything I found out that's battery related soon, in another thread...
Posted here for starters as I see many people struggling with battery life here... Also, if anyone has some more tips like that, I'd love to hear them...
Also, depends on your apps, but some of them might be keeping your phone on too... In my case that was IM+ which I use on a regular basis... Just turn off anything you don't need when you're not actually using your phone... Or let it go into push mode Also, don't just kill everything via task killer, that's no solution because if it started once, it'll start again...the problem is in your settings, which should be checked...
Well, I hope some of that made sense... This was the most typing I've ever done on my sensation...
Cheers!

I found this tip useful, thanks
My Pyramid goes to deep sleep well, but it wakes up every hour for a couple of minutes or something - maybe this will help
Ok guys I have prbassplayer's blessing on this thread and he feels it may work so lets keep this civil and make it a helpful and definitive thread to help any and all users get better battery life. From here on this will be the only thread on battery life all others in q&a and general will be reported and hopefully closed. it is open to people in the skyrocket section on any rom and kernel combo. There are rules and standards that any who wish for help on this thread.
Rules
All requests for help must be in this format as this will help in speedy and decent recommendations.
1.Rom & Kernel Combo
2.How long you have been on said combo ex. 3 days and number of cycles will help considerably too.
3.Screenshots
1.Battery Graph
2.Screen on time
3.Better Battery Stats info (If applicable but not required).
4.general usage info as in how do you use your phone give us details into what you do through the day.
You can not suggest another rom.
this thread will not be turned into a best rom thread it is to help others get the most out of their current setups you may suggest other kernels but if you suggest another rom i will report your post and it will be removed.
My hope is that this will cut down on tons of threads and give everyone a good place to get help please guys lets make this section awesome like it used to be.
I think u should also ad to the op (nrm ) a few simple guidelines or places/things they can go and independently research. Not spoon feeding mind u, just a starting point. here are a few examples that come to mind:
1) Underclocking/governors
2) Undervolting
3) Wakelocks (pre-established thread anyone?)
4) Droidwall/background data usage & sync
5) CPU Sleeper & alternatives
6) Auto brightness controls (cm9, lux, etc...)
7) Wifi as alternative
8) H+ instead of LTE
9) Modem/radio choice
10) Sleep/display time outs etc...
And MOST IMPORTANTLY, avoiding apps like Juice Defender
I'll look into adding as we go thanks for the ideas bro

I'll start, because I just got the best battery I've gotten to date yesterday. WOO!
Note: I used stock charger to charge the night before, although no wake locks, i always restart in the morning. Dont know if it helps... I feel like it does.
1. CM9 Stable, InstigatorX 5.4.5
2. installed 2 days ago-ish
3. see attached.
4. Forgot to get a screen on time screeny... was like 2 hours. light useage. auto brightness
5. badass governor, used the cwm script to get both cores to be governed. 1.72/192
6. LTE/Wifi all day, baby. Mostly wifi.
7. there was a slight period of charge when i moved over some music. wasnt more than ~10 minutes of being plugged into my laptop.
8. exchange email on 15 minute syncing periods. Turned off push, as i can deal with the 15 minutes between emails... BEST. BATTERY SAVER. EVER.
9. gps off. didnt use it at all. I missed the key screen shots... I know. I only have this because i was bragging to my friend who's got a s3 on verizon and a sucky battery.
couple phone calls, probably 30 texts. it was pretty light usage these days. Color me impressed.
OHH! i have the nexus extended battery.

Not having bad battery life, but hey, it can always be better right!?!
First off, GREAT thread idea, it's a shame it hasn't really been utilized though. How about I start. I'm wondering a bit about how much battery I can save if I get rid of Google maps. Also, if you have any recommendations of a replacement for it if I do dump it. Even if I don't open the application the entire day, it is consistently in the top stats on my BBS reports. I'm not really sure of the effect it will have if I get rid of it though. I mean, if it is only going to get me another 40-60 minutes per charge, I don't know if it would be worth losing the convenient access to reliable maps.
Anyway, I thought I'd toss this out and see what everyone thinks.
I'm currently running Majicks Orthus One (quite happily I might add) and I've been on it for almost a week now. I generally don't use my phone too much during the weekdays while at work but, once I get home, the screen is generally on until I go to bed. On weekends, which is when I grabbed these screenies and BBS dumb, I am on WIFI most of the day, but I use my phone ALL DAY LONG even though I've got my laptop and rooted Kindle running CM10 sitting right next to me. LOL!
Other than the apps I've added (around 70 total), I've got it set up pretty much as if I just flashed it. By this, I mean that I haven't really done any battery tweaking. It's on badass gov by default, and I am utilizing the bln feature (I know it hates my battery, but I LOVE this feature). I get pretty good life usually (12-16 hours with 3-5 hours of screen on time), and I haven't really seen the media wake locks which are affecting others. Also, and I know I'm asking a ton (and maybe even being a bit of a battery miser considering I'm already getting decent time on my charges), but do you see anything else that should be a cause of alarm to me? Everything looks minuscule to me compared to Maps, but I know that there are many people who know much more than me when it comes to this stuff. So all thoughts are welcome.Without further adeau, here are some of my screen shots and BBS dump...
Thanks in advance! I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Great idea. I'll contribute as well.
I'm also on Orthus-One, and whatever kernel comes with. One change I made was to change the governor to Conservative. Not entirely sure what that does, but I thought I'd throw it out.
I've been on this ROM for 28ish hours, so today was day 1. I've rebooted a few times. Can't remember how many.
I don't know that I've done a whole lot to reduce battery usage. Today I was on wifi almost all day, but normally I fluctuate between H+ and LTE (LTE near work, H+ most of the drive home, wifi at home).
Brightness is set at a constant ~35% with auto brightness removed. I don't use my phone for anything other than answering calls in the car, so that suits me.
I don't play any games that would be battery intensive, and only watch videos (from sd) when it's plugged in. Rarely listen to music, but that's likely to change next week on vacation.
These shots were taken about 3 hours ago. There's been another hour and a quarter of screen on time since then. I used my phone a lot today, as you can see.
Also, I don't know if it makes a difference, but I took the case I had off of my phone yesterday, and it doesn't seem to get anywhere near as hot. Probably a coincidence, but I thought I'd mention it.
Since it was mentioned above, this is all on a Standard battery.

That's actually not half bad battery life. I noticed a few things, though. One is the NetworkLocationLocator wakelock. Leaving network location on will chew away your battery like that. If you can do without a location service more often than not, I'd leave it and GPS off. I actually think network location is less useful than GPS--GPS doesn't use *that* much more battery, and it's precise. With network location, if a couple of wifi networks near you have "_nomap" appended to the end of their name, you're lost.
The only other PWL I saw was Avast. Personally, I don't think any of the "anti-virus" apps are worth the time it takes to download them. They sit there eating up battery, when really all you need to make sure your phone doesn't pick up a virus or malware is common sense. Only install apps from Play, Amazon and XDA (third-party markets will often put bootloaders and other bad stuff in their apps), don't click anything on shady-looking websites, and leave USB debugging off unless you need it.
KWLs all look ok. BLN is murdering you, but if the feature's worth the battery sacrifice, more power to you.
Alarms look fine, but keep an eye on Facebook. It used a ton of network data for apparently only being active 28s (according to the PWL data). Do you have it set to use push notifications or refresh on a short schedule?

Not a coincidence at all. "Naked" phones run cooler than phones in a case. Shouldn't be by a ton (if it is, get a new case), but a case, naturally, restricts airflow, which allows more heat to build up. I had to stop using my Otterbox Defender for that reason--the phone was just getting too hot inside the case, and I was starting to be concerned.

Yeah, after seeing maps eating up so much power, I changed it to not automatically update my location. I was using it cause the wife is a bit of a worry wart and she heard a story from a friend that their husband was in a motorcycle accident not involving another car and wasn't found for about 12 hours cause he fell into a ditch off a country road. Now, she thinks that if one of us ever get into an accident, that latitude is going to save us. Lol! I get the theory behind it, but her iphone only updates it sporadically anyway so it's not really worth much. I unchecked all location services, and I'll just turn on gps when I need it and see how that treats me.
Anti-virus is more for if I lose my phone. I like the remote wipe feature, as well as the Web and app firewall. Plus, it doubles as a security blanket for me lol
BLN is a power monger, but I love being able to have that option so I deal with it.
FB is a pain in the butt in general, but I haven't found an app I like to use in its place so I've just dealt with it. I do have it set to push notifications, but I've read that you think it may be misbehaving even when it's not set to push data, so I may just dump it and try fast for Facebook or friendcaster for a bit to see if I can deal with one of those.
I appreciate you looking into this for me as you are pretty much the battery guru around here. I was a bit worried that no one was looking at this thread cause it wasn't really being utilized. I don't understand why, when everyone wants to open a thread for battery life, they don't seem to want to utilize the one sanctioned by our mod. But that seems to just be xda in general lately.

If you're willing to, freeze/uninstall Maps and use MapQuest and/or OSMAnd instead. Both eat up far less battery, and MapQuest has basically all the same features. I use Waze as well, but that's more for speed trap notifications than anything else.

Just an FYI, you can have the Avast theft protection app (the one they tell you to give a custom name to) on your phone without the full Avast suite. Eats up almost no battery, and can be set to wipe upon X number of failed attempts to sign in.

Friendcaster and Tweetcaster have both had great results for me. The Twitter app's biggest sin is a stray alarm that'll hold you awake for 10-15 seconds every so often. The Facebook app, though, is (I can only assume) downloading ad data and sending usage info back at set intervals, even if you have it set to refresh every X hours. I caught on when I had it set to never auto-update, but saw that it was still using mobile data.
As far as mobile protection I don't use antivirus but I have Cerberus for tracking wiping and the like

First problem is you're using juice defender. Imo, that app does more harm than good on ics. It also looks like the gtalk app is waking you up way to much. If you don't use it, I'd say to delete it or, at the very least, log out of it when you aren't using it. Maps, like with my last setup, is killing you. I'd recommend following tj benders advice to me and either freeze it, or delete it all together and try one of his suggestions for a replacement.
Also, we're you charging at any point during that cycle, running at 384 for over 3 hours suggests to me that you had either charged for a while, or ya got an app going crazy. That is, unless your screen on time correlation is similar. Without the screen shots Illnevertell asked for, I can't really tell much more.
If ignorance is bliss, you must be orgasmic. Don't let your pants get wet and use that search button.

I've been using this rom for some time now but still can't get past the wake locks. When I updated to the 9/16, I did a clean updated. Wiped everything and fresh install. Solved
My apologies for not having followed thread rules on my prior post. I had just come from another battery thread that actually wanted BBS in zip form as the only post.
My prior BBS dump showed that my culprit wakelock was Suspend_Backoff. Searching I found the following thread:
productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/chrome/rT0ewNsBx18/0_RqLGBQr70J
I unchecked "Enable Tilt Scrolling" in Google Chrome settings and recharged my battery to 100%.
I then left it on idle all night just like it had been when I generated the last BBS file dump.
As you can see the results are drastically improved. Went from losing 65% of battery in 5 1/2 hours to losing 25% in 9 hours. Also went from 5% deep sleep to 94%!
Still not pefect but definitely a significant improvement. Thanks for the great thread!
Spectre one thing is network location I would turn that off until you need it also that giant cliff dropoff I'm assuming was a reboot of sorts that went uncaught I know that for me I don't get reboots on jb I go to recovery and clear my caches first thing then I make sure to close every app as I'm done using it as far as bbs I'll leave that to tj as he is a wakelock god at this point lol

Google Maps, basically, is the answer. It's polling NetworkLocationLocator pretty constantly. If you turn location services off, you'll help yourself tremendously. I still recommend uninstalling Maps (usual disclaimer about uninstalling system processes) and using an alternate app like Mapquest, OSMAnd and/or Waze to clean up all of those Maps-generated alarms.
Beyond that, HD Widgets is definitely keeping you awake some, so you might want to change the refresh time on that. That being said, I can't imagine HD Widgets is doing too much damage to your battery life or people wouldn't use it.
Post up another BBS dump if you get a chance. Also, BBS dumps are a great way to tell if you've randomly rebooted (which, yeah, can chew through a ton of battery) because they'll differ from the "up-time" shown by your battery screen. Also, if you set your phone down at 9:00 PM and wake up at 7:00 AM, but your BBS dump says it's only been five hours since boot, you know you've got some random rebooting going on.
Hey guys,
I've been battling location related wakelocks from Gnow et al recently and finally came to simply using Xposed and WakeLock Terminator to block those wakelocks (which appears to correct that issue) and instead, immediately after, had audiomix keep my phone awake (despite no video/music/sounds). Upon research, I just keep finding wakelock after wakelock after setting to debug and fix - is there actually any way to get a dependable device? Am I doomed to always hope the night before my meeting is not the night the phone decides it's playing imaginary audio all night?
I love Android, I love the Nexus 5, and I can deal with 1-2% idle burn, I can deal with 4-5 hours SoT, and I can deal with leaving some location related things off. What I ABSOLUTELY cannot deal with is never knowing. For a device I'm paying well into three digits for that's supposed to take notes, make reminders, keep me in touch, and so on, it had DAMN well be able to stay on. I hated the iPhone in many ways, but dependability was something it never failed in - it did always work.
I've tried settings, I've tried debugging battery, I've tried custom ROM and stock ROM, three different kernels (counting stock).
So, tell me, what do I do to be able to count on my phone (without disabling everything enjoyable besides radio)? Please do not flame me for this, but I'm actually losing my patience fast. Any help is appreciated (and yes, I've checked forums, looked up the "improving Nexus 5 battery" posts, and what not - I realize I'll lose battery with High Accuracy location on, I realize WiFi drains it a bit, that's fine. I'm simply talking about fixing the bullsh*t stuff).
Thank you so much in advance.
Well how long does your battery last? And what does your battery stats say you get for usage and screen time?
The whole Android system operates on wakelocks, if you get rid of em all you'll just have a brick. It's the excessive ones that shouldn't be you need to stop

Sounds to me like you're too much into finding a problem
Audio Mix is actually a number of things, not just songs playing or Spotify etc. how long does your battery last ? i don't even touch wake locks or battery saving apps and i get a consistent 3:30 hours screen on time with 14 hours standby
Thats with a usage of :
Chrome
whatsapp
facebook
youtube
twitter
Google Now on
Location high accuracy
tasker - checking network location
" ok google" everywhere
manual brightness
mix of wifi/3g
etc
You mentioned a lot of wakelocks and didn't actually mention the sort of battery life you're getting
You may be right about the finding a problem thing. I'm probably a bit paranoid now, but I do get between 6-15% burn per out SoT and seemingly indefinite idle (Carbon + ElementalX is nice) when it's working like expected - it's just the inconsistency that drives me insane. If it was ALWAYS 2%/hour idle burn, I could learn to deal with that. It's just when I go to bed with it at 30-40% and wake up with it dead that I can't afford to have happen.
Read post one and 2 for tips.

It's difficult to be consistent all the time with a phone, the radio in a bad area can kill your battery just as you mentioned... That being said 40% overnight is insane
I seem to have fixed the wakelock by removing DSP Manager and blocking location wakelocks. I'm a little OCD with technology... lol
AudioMixIn? That's the OK Google hotword detection feature.
Battery has been consistent for me. The only time it isn't is when I'm in an area with weak signal and trying to use data, then power usage can go up 10x as high as normal even just idling. Otherwise, I always know what to expect but I have turned paired down the features that tend to drain uncontrollably when the phone isn't even being used such as WiFi Locations and Auto Syncs.

That shouldn't ever happen (never has for me), but if you want it to be full in the morning it's best to plug it in.
I wish battery threads would die a long, slow painful death.
If battery threads had a human form, I'd torture them like Theon in GOT.
The answer? Every device is different. No battery life from one user will be replicated by another user.
BOTTOM LINE.
There are too many various factors for battery to remain consistent as others have stated. The only thing you can do is attempt to be resourceful and your battery life should remain decent to high all the time.
Lower brightness, disable unneeded features, uninstall non-used apps, use Greenify on Facebook/Kik, use 2G radio when not connected to WiFi if you can deal with it.

Is is just me or the battery of gear 2 have been massively undersold?
I easily get 4.5-5 days of battery life, I charge 100% on Monday morning, and then it will last me until Friday night or Saturday morning.
I use my watch to track my daily cycling commute, and track my sleep every night. I get several notifications, and the notifications that I like the best are from google now, one of which is weather notification that updates it self several times a hour.
I have motion screen activation, which says that it might reduce the battery life but haven't noticed any difference, I have vibration on as well, the only thing I don't have as default is the setting for screen turning on when you receive a notification. ( i am using the default watch face that have shortcuts on it).
Share your experience, what are you doing with your gear 2 and how long does it last.
Yes I have been getting 4 days easy, Samsung are useless at marketing or sticking with a product.
That said most reviews do not state this either, one did but not as a plus point ???
Given the competition cannot doing anything meaningful with a full charge and last the day, Samsung are missing a trick.
Reviews also state Apple if struggling with barely 1 day battery !!! but still expect to sell a million odd watches !!!
If Samsung grows some balls and do there own thing, commit to a product and stick to it, they would succeed.
After the most recent firmware I must say I can get 7 days use without charge.
I use my watch from 7AM to 7PM.
Pretty much everything on notifications, even Twitter but only 7 or so favourites to avoid overload, screen wake up off but wake on notification and brightness to 3.
Laughable when you hear the Apple crap can barely last 18 hrs straight if used as a smart watch

Wow. I honestly only get two days. I have the brightness set to 3, have notifications on (with screen-on activation for 5 seconds), vibration on, have the wrist-motion-activated screen on, and use it occasionally for calls. I power it completely off at night to sleep, too. There's no way I could ever get 7 days though unless I disabled Bluetooth. What am I missing!? 7 days would be amazing.
Do you guys have the pedometer turned on?
Have you guys flashed the custom ROM? (I haven't, but it says it improves battery life)

I noticed the battery life did improve a lot on the latest Tizen release but I am not getting any more than 3 days with these settings:
Stock, not rooted (root not needed for me with Tizen)
Brightness 3
Timeout 10 seconds
Motion ON (I look at time many times throughout the day)
Calls are rare, 10-20 texts using watch/flesky app
Pedometer on 100% of time, Bluetooth always on too
Keep it on all night but use sleep app
If I decrease the brightness to 2 and turn motion off, I could squeeze 4-5 days out but then I wouldn't enjoy the watch:silly:
Now when I use my Neo, battery life is much worse with the same exact settings....go figure.
No custom ROM, brightness 4, motion off but screen set to on for notification.
You should get 4 days easy being on 24/7.
Try a full reset.

Pedometer is off as I use my S5 linked as the main pedometer.

@ obsydian - There are too many variables here. I think the decrease with mine is due to motion and how often it turns on but I'm very happy with it!
I dont use my watch for step counting and screen off for notification.
I have motion detection so the screen only turns on when i look at it.
I have my phone on 24/7, I also track my sleep.
so I am guessing its the step counting that is draining the battery, also maybe the texting using the watch,I guess the longer the screen is on the faster battery drain
The longest time I've ever used is 2.5 days without connecting to a phone (I have no samsung phone, so only use the step count and HRM function)
I have had a Gear S2 for a few month now. Well... not entirely true. I was without for about a month. I sent the first one in to a repair depot who kept it for over a month. In the end I am still awaiting refund but I bought another one. (Side note, Samsung support is the worst I have ever experiences on the planet in over 40 years of dealing with C.S. Count your blessings if you do not have to deal with them)
I have a friend who also has an S2 his is a few moths older now and his battery life is always excellent.
He has sound off, wifi off, NFC, GPS off but bluetooth is on as is his 3G radio.
I have notifications/sound on, 3G radio Off, wifi Off, NFC Off, GPS Off and bluetooth On.
We would compare in the afternoon and I would be around 55-60 percent and he would be mid to high 80's
Even my brand new one that is 4 months newer than his is the same. We sat next to one another in a training class and I started to notice that his watch face was pretty much always off. We both had Gesture On enabled but mine was on far more than his.
I turned gesture On- off and found after 16 hours I was just under 70%. About 2% an hour. That was the best I had ever seen!!
I have been using it that way for 4 days and repeat the results. My next questions are, is it the sensor or the actual movement regardless of the screen state that burns up so much battery?
In other word if I put 2 side by side with gesture on and moved one of them regularly but not to a degree that the screen came on would that one have a lower battery?
In the end, for me what I discovered was that well.. I move more than he does. I have a much higher step count and I am more physically active. Turning off "Gesture On" made this watch more useful to me but it annoys me that I have to press buttons to see notifications.
I am going to see if I can find a way to make a suggestion upstream to Samsung to add a second Gesture On mode that it is only enabled for say 20-30 seconds after a beep/vibrate notification. That should be easily do-able as that is just software.
The second request I have is to allow me to set the angle to which the watch must be to turn it on. Instead of simply facing straight up, maybe more to an angle as if I held it up to face me would be nice..... If I know how it has to be to turn it on I would just set it that way to light it up.... Of course this is also all predicated on the notion that it is not the sensor itself that consumes so much battery.
Same issue on ALL this kind of watch. I really read the time 50 times at days but all my (gesture on) watch turn on 800 time at days so of course much drain that other people who do not move her arm along the day....
I've only had mine for literally 3 days. So far I think the battery life is pretty good. If I don't play with it much I can end a day at about 50%.
I had the 1st galaxy gear and an apple watch, both of those were horrible with the battery. I could only get 6 hours with my Apple watch.

the apple watch is disappointing. Let's hope the next gen will be better. I'll be happier knowing whether to choose the gear s3 or the apple watch. But it depends on the support samsung gives apple
